I have used this method for over 40 yrs but I have always mixed the caulking with some spackle and primer this way you can use a puddy knife or Just brush it on with a brush especially for rough sawn lumber and once it dries can sand it and or take a spong to smooth it out. If it’s going to need to be sanded smooth, than mix with less caulking. Or Just mix spackle with primer and cold water brush it on thick and sand super easy super fast….
It is good to see that a damaged wooden door can be fixed one way or another. Thank you.
Just found your channel! Appreciate this this tip, which is manageable for inexperienced DIYer like me🙏🏻😊
Awesome, I was making this harder than it had to be. Thank you!!
I thank you so much as as have late. Caulk on hand pulling out silicone caulk on this door. Feeling like the jam will never look good.
Looks great!
thank you for the tip!

how's that door doing any updates?
The annoying thing with caulk is you cannot sand it,
So any unsightly imperfections
Would be seen clearly on the door!
Has the caulk shrunk or cracked!
I used quick fill Polly filla on my doors & frames,
Woodfilla is annoying to mix then rub out.
@@eunice8116 It still looks good but it's only been 2 months. To your point, I think a High Performance Wood Filler like Ron uses in this video would do the trick: czcams.com/video/eSpwKTWYnJQ/video.html
That would give you the ability to sand it down afterwards. I also think it wouldn't be that much more effort. Perhaps a little less convenient because I almost always have a tube of caulk lying around...
Thank you! I have exactly this problem. Now I know how to fix it.
My tip is to use an entirely different product - I can think of 3 off hand: 1) Dry Dex, 2) Wood Filler, or 3) Epoxy Putty. I like Dry Dex the best because it forms well, has a dry indicator - and sands/paints well.
I think you are correct. Those products give you the ability to sand afterwards. I'll try that on the next project and maybe delete this video if that is the way to go
Thanks my kitchen cabinets are chipping 😢such a pain in the ass
I would neveerrr!!! I thought he was joking 😂 fixing Caulking that's peeling is literally the worst!! And it will peel.
I agree use caulk or even drywall mud and fill in ...use good paint afterwards
Should probably use a filler so you can sand it smooth.
This is just what I’ve been looking for! Does it hold up well?
MH Ready Patch is my “go to” for this sort of thing. It’s one of the most durable spackle/wood fillers on the market, it can be used on both interior and exterior surfaces, it’s SUUUPER easy to work with (literally goes on like butter), doesn’t shrink or crack (unlike caulk), it sands down beautifully, AND it won’t break the bank!!....
Oh and it’s got a nice thick consistency to it.
Highly recommend!!
That sounds like a winner-winner-chicken-dinner product!
Thank you! Just used it on my old doors and it looks wonderful now!!!! I had something like 5 layers of paint built up and it was terribly difficult to sand smooth 😭
You can sand acrylic caulking and latex paint you have to wet sand it and wet sanding is the only way
Hi. You forgot to say that you can't sand acrylic caulk!! There are other quick and easy fixes that are far more appropriate.
This was my first quick idea but then learned it doesn't sand or work well. It leaves the holes about 75% filled after it fries and would require the process to be repeated again which can be totally avoided by using wood filler
Dap makes a product called Presto Patch that works pretty well.
Thanks for the product tip Jordan!
Very helpful! So is it best not to sand the paint down?
I dont know his situation but for mine we have 100 year old doors coated in several layers of lead paint. We have small children and the safest way to seal lead paint is to paint over and not sand it. You can have it professionally removed, however the lead seems into the wood so it is never truly gone.
Is it better to use caulk or spackle?
If you could find an exterior spackle that would do the trick
👌👌👌
For antidepressants.
Try using water putty works better than caulk.

Calk is not really a good permanent bond. Next time try using auto body " bondo". Its definitely way more permanent and wont shrink like calk
I've used Bondo on cars before and I know it works well on metal, but does it also work well on wood?
@@SpiritofaHandyman yes i have used bondo to restore rot, chips, cracks and digs on window sills, porch posts, spindles, window and door trim etc. It never cracks or shrinks
@@4uafunguy #ProTip Thanks!
@@SpiritofaHandyman np 👍🏻
Tony, can I use it on a painted surface? I painted my cabinets but some spots have though dips from where I had to scrap and re-sand .. Afraid to remove that layer around the gouge
Use 40 min mud.sands to perfectiin
Problem here, you'll never be able to sand that later. Use a sandable filler.
Can you post a link?
Spent a day rubbing down my outhouse door and primed it and it looks exactly like that and I'm not happy with the finish.
I think the only real way to get a nice finish is take all the old paint off.
But seeming the door is 110years old and original I know it's going to just fall apart and crumble.
Should have used drywall mud so you can sand it perfectly smooth.
Wouldn't that get soggy once rained on? The caulk was water resilient.
@@SpiritofaHandyman oh ok I didn't know this was an exterior door.
I think they make exterior sand-able products.
@@df56gh4d5h good to know!
@@SpiritofaHandyman there's a video of a guy using bondo on wood.
You forgot that jingle.
I put it at the end of the video this time ;)
I made it with Woodglut plans!
That's a cheap easy trick for selling a house, but nothing that's going to last. It'll come up with a light scrub. Use wood filler, or even wood glue.
No way hozay.
