This information was exactly what i needed! I was thinking i had to sand/file away the old paint and wood to get the filler material to stick. After 15 years in my new construction home, some of my baseboards have some pretty good dings and gouges in them. This tip should help me repair all of the damaged bits, without replacing or hiring a handiman. Thank you so much!

WOW! Thank you! After years of staring at a gash on the baseboard at the bottom of my stair landing I can finally fix it and forget it. The situation that caused it was stressful and upsetting. Every time I see it am reminded of the situation. Now I can fix it and forget the situation ever happened!

I'm in the process of fixing several areas of damage in my daughter's room before painting. I'm using Elmer's wood filler because I don't want it to shrink or ding. The area I just fixed is exactly like your demo. I taped under and over the area and filled it in over three days and sanded it round to match. The process is the same but I wonder about the longevity of joint compound.

+Jamie Corley That depends on the temperature and humidity. Usually several hours in a typical setting. It also depends on how big the patch is. You can speed it up with a hair dryer.

Just did this procedure. Worked like a charm on a busted baseboard with a huge chip(about the size of a thumb). Be patient while the joint compound dries. It will dry on top layer but still be pliable underneath. It needs to dry fully before applying another layer or sanding.
