    It's great to have access to all of these different exercises that might help arthritis; but it is also overwhelming because everyone online says they have the answers to solve your hip arthritis problems.
    The best thing to do is try different exercises for a while and pay attention to how your body feels. If they don't work, then try some other exercises until you find what works for your body.

    I had several rounds of physical therapy for different body parts. Only one of the therapists explained what muscles I should be using. I did more damage than good with the others.

      Sitting and Dangling your feet and moving im 4 directions but be careful don't over do it just a little bit is enough

    ❤ thank you I was bone on bone on my right hip had to get a hip replacement before that I was on crutches for 9 months I lost all strength in my glutes my left hip has arthritis but I make sure whatever I do I squeeze my glutes I do most of these exercises you mentioned but I make sure I engage my glutes while I do them

      Went to start therapy yesterday. I had been doing yours and had no pain whatsoever, and my mobility was getting better and better. After my visit yesterday, by evening I had the original low back pain again and GROIN pain. I am angry!!!! Now I'm scheduled for 4 weeks of therapy twice a week. I am very tempted to cancel. I feel like I was set back. This is the next day and I'm hurting and don't want to do anything. 😢

    Even our Silver Sneakers teacher does all of these we're not supposed to do! Im in 70s and have terrible sciatica. Also hip and knees arthritis.

    Whoa! Walkiing surprised me big time. I force myself to take the extra steps thinking it was always helping towards. My provider said walking great overal especially hip arthritis and my fibromyalgia. What a game changer this is for me. I have a new way of thinking for all my work outs due to you wonderful instruction and thorough explanations. Thank you ❤

    David, I have done every one of those 10 exercises and each one results in pain. I agree 100% on your explanations and am always conscious of using my glutes now in every movement throughout the day.       Hi Marie, thank you so much for sharing your experience! We're very sorry to hear that these exercises have resulted in pain. Many times the pain can come from using too much intensity or doing too much at a time.
      You may need to scale back. It's awesome to hear that you are now more conscious of your glutes throughout the day. That is a great place to start. If you can do glute squeezes many times through the day, every day but keep the intensity low, you gain some more strength and mobility.
      Small consistent movements will add up and you feel the difference. Once you build up strength you might be able to move on to these exercises, starting at the lowest intensity.

    My physical therapist made me do so many of those - no wonder I only got worse! I don't have bone on bone though, does that matter? I have Troch Bursitis and a torn hip flexor muscle, same side, and everything he did made it worse so I stopped going. Since I found you I've been doing your videos, so, lots of glute strengthening, which, now I can walk upstairs with NO problem, (knee problem same side). Why don't they know anything? I spent months making it all worse, until I discovered your videos.

    My therapist had me do all those exercises for my knee replacement therapy however I also have hip arthritis with FAI, on the same side as the surgical knee, when I get home after therapy I would be in excruciating pain but always taught it’s from working out the muscles . Thank you doc

    I really like what you are showing us about front vs. rear muscle balance causing hip and knee problems. I turn 60 in July, was too sedentary as an online special ed teacher for 7 years. Outer hip got angry and I had physical therapy for trochanteric bursitis (spring 2022), felt better until fall 2023 walking 31 miles in October and then 100 miles in November for fundraisers🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. Most of this was with 2 trekking poles to reduce weight on my hips & knees. I was sent back to PT (January for 9 weeks) because I had “slippy” sore knees. Knees felt loose, as if something would slip out of place if I stepped wrong. We did quite a few of the exercises you describe in this video 😬. Now the hips are less painful than my left knee at the pes anserine bursa area, but no obvious swelling. It makes a lot of sense that I need to strengthen my glutes to take work away from my quads, and I’m going to watch all of your videos to learn how to do this without hurting the knees. Donkey kicks on all fours was maybe too much lol but I plan to get there!

    I believe this information is ALSO VERY IMPORTANT for those of us who had to get a hip replacement. When I found your channel, it was too late to save my left hip joint. I'm glad I had the surgery, but I don't do the exercises they told me to! I only practice what you preach! I think this way my new hip will last for decades. Thank you ❤

    Please post more What not to Do videos, so helpful! Especially as we progress and want to exercise for general health.. that’s where I am now but I occasionally get flare ups after exercise and it’s because I’m doing things I shouldn’t. How about lateral step ups?

    I’m 69 and had my R hip replaced 8 yrs ago. It’s been doing great. I stopped going to the gym in Feb after some female surgery and was slow to return even when I got the green light. Two out of the 3 times I’ve gone- once to yoga the other a Senior Fit class, I did something in class that caused immediate pain and I limped out. The first time it lingered for a day or two. This time it’s been 5 days and the pain hasn’t abated. Of course most if not all of these movements were part of the classes. Thank you for the info.

    Wow. Great video. I have been doing so many exercises that i should not have been even though i was doing them correctly using my glutes. Thank you so much! Ive been avoiding many exercises due to pain thinking it was exercise in general making me end up with worse pain. Just came across your videos and they are pure gold. I will be utilizing your videos so much and have already done the knee one this morning. I have osteopenia on the cusp of osteoporosis, Celiac disease, fibromyalgia anemia at the moment. Im a mess but your videos are giving me hope for a better, healthier annd more mobile future. I am only 62 and i have been feeling much older due to bone pain.

    #7 that hip flexor stretch is what started my pain journey. I went into overdrive with that one for a few months after my running on the treadmill. I only do it randomly these days and not very hard. Hope things can get a little bit better. Hm, doing a version of #5 now in a machine, I will try and NOT do that one for a while to see what happens. Another great video. Thank you.

    Video on how to build hip flexors?
    I got osteoarthritis in lower back at 39 😢
    I now have degenerative disc disease and advanced arthritis in my hips. I lift weights every day for bone density but I do not want aggravated it further.
    I also EDS so I have unbelievable flexibility

    I have had hip pain for years and have been doing all these exercises in pain only to find out I am bone on bone. I value your information and explanation. I don't feel good waling on level ground and feel better going uphill or down hill, is this ok? What do you think about using an inversion table or traction to create space? I just started using it for about 3 minutes 2x a day and I feel improvement. I am beginning to focus on glutes. Thank you.

      In my experience, Hallux Valgus, hip osteoarthritis and cross bite functional scoliosis with weak glute, overpronated ankle and hyper extended knee on affected side. Hard to tell which is the hen and which the egg in all of these...with bunions, one tends to walk with the leg lifting the foot rather than the other way round, using all the wrong muscles. Hope you find a way with yours.

    I have started using a stepper/scooter… it has 2 wheels front and back and I stand on the platform with one leg and scoot with the other.
    It seemed very good , I did it yesterday… I will let you know.
    Biking really hurt me last week

    Thank you, Dr. David. Your information was very instructive. I now realize that I need to modify some of my regular activities in order to provide a better muscle balance in my hip area. Some other activities that may add detrimentally to the muscle imbalance may be skating, skiing and the low stances necessary to properly practice the martial arts (i.e. karate, kung fu, etc.).

    Hi doc. I’ve purchased your hip recovery program and waiting to schedule my first meeting with your coaches. I don’t have bone on bone but I do have osteoarthritis. So I’m going to assume golf is a no no based on the walking. My season just started and I’m working hard to walk and fire my glutes. While I’m waiting for my playing partners to hit, I’m doing butt clenches. Given the season just started and last 7 months, will doing the hip recovery program counteract the damage from walking and golfing? Is there a way to recover from hip arthritis and still golf? Thanks!

    Physical therapy had me use every one you showed. I ache so bad at night. Even went to er . The doctor said I made my swollen red leg angry. They even pulled fluid out of the hip flexor area. 4 days in hospital.

    All those exercises are in all the exercise classes I take and have taken for years. Can those exercises actually cause hip arthritis or bursitis or even tendinitis? My left hip starts to hurt right away at the beginning of my silver sneakers class.

    Ok here’s my issue. I’m 66 and want to work my quads and keep the definition. What can I do to work the quads really good instead of leg ext machines at about 40 pounds? I get the compressive issue, but for me I never hurt with this exercise. Can I contact gluts as I extend and is it better?

    What are you thoughts on mini steppers to help build glute strength? And thank you for this list! I've been using a physical therapy app that has many of the exercises you've mentioned. They've always been uncomfortable and after trying to modify those moves a little, I've stopped them. Your information confirms what I've been feeling and now I know that it also could cause more damage.

    I have had bilateral hip replacement 35 years ago. So far so good 🤞. However at the moment I am suffering from knee pain according to your knee video three months ago I at the 4th stage. My hip replacement is no arthritis it was because of long term steroids taking. My knees are bent slightly. Please let me know if I need replacement at this moment? I am going to see my surgeon soon

      Hi Roshini, Having surgery is a very personal decision and we wouldn't be able to tell you if you need surgery without a proper evaluation. What we do want to let you know is that you know your body better than anyone and if you do not want surgery it's important that you ask your healthcare provider for conservative treatments.     I was doing alll those exercises… I just found out at 47 that I have hip dysplasia , that caused my early arthritis

    Are we destined to have weak scrawny quads and hip flexors for the rest of our lives then? Does that mean that leg day at the gym should just be glute day for us with hip oa?

    I’ve been having hip pain and from my X-ray I’m just finding out at 47 that I have hip dysplasia and that’s causing my early arthritis. I’m thinking about starting your hip program for hip imbalances. My question is will that program help me being that I have hip dysplasia?

      We are sorry to hear about the hip dysplasia diagnosed and the arthritis as a result. We can't imagine the discomfort and pain you are having to deal with.
      Thank you for considering getting the program! However, because of the hip dysplasia, we wouldn't recommend doing so as it would not help treat this particular issue. We would recommend visiting a specialist to better help!

I’ve been active and excercised most of my adulthood, maybe had I known this earlier in life then I would’ve slacked up a bit. Thxs again and I’ll keep u posted😊

    My hip suddenly caused acute pain in bed one night (never had it before), then did it every few nights but not every night. It had been a bit stiff when standing from sitting on a settee. Otherwise no problems in between. Then suddenly ( ( about 4 weeks later) I suddenly found I couldn’t use the leg of the painful hip first when going upstairs. It felt as if I had no strength in the muscles of my leg and it was painful. Going down stairs a bit painful but not nearly as much. So have been resting it and avoiding doing stairs too many times in the day. It’s feeling much better but I still can’t sleep on either side but have to sleep on my back. If I sleep on the bad hip side it hurts and if I sleep on the good side the stretch makes it hurt. The fact that it came on so suddenly makes wonder if it’s more likely to be bursitis or ligament strain than arthritis. I am being very careful about the way I sit and not sitting on a low settee. I don’t feel rested sleeping on my back at night.
    When this started, I had been staying at my friend’s for 8 weeks, not doing much physical activity and sitting on a very uncomfortable settee where it was impossible to sit up straight. Could this be the cause of this or is it more likely to be arthritis? Thanks for your very interesting video which I discovered today

We need to get the pain under control by off loading the problem area and slowly building your strength and tolerance to the point where you may get back to normal activities.     So are you saying that Pilates is not good for hip arthritis.....a lot of these exercises are done in Pilates

    Glut strength is improved with bike riding. Not just quads.

      Hi Elbowroom, You're right! Glutes can be strengthened by bike riding if it's done correctly. However, if your quads and hamstrings are move sore or tired after you exercise vs the glutes it can exacerbate the problem. Thank you so much for mentioning this!
