one of my personal favorite film genre's, today we decided to take a look at the history of the rom-com. from the screwball comedies of the 1930s, to the magical musicals of the 1950s, to the genre's hey-day in the 2000s, to its eventual decline in the 2010s. what's your favorite romcom?

One thing I’m not a fan of in newer romcoms is the romanisation and glamorisation of toxic and sometimes even abusive relationships. For example, this is done extensively in The Kissing Booth.
Oh absolutely! I really dislike how problematic tropes are always being used to drive the story or characters. Even when something is a product of its time, there’s so many things that were still problematic in those periods but are used for laughs or romance in those films.
It’s worse when they’re used in teen films, which have significant influence over young people, specifically young girls.
Let's be honest, toxicity and unhealthy relationships are a staple in classic romcoms as well. They're movies meant to appeal to our fantasies and part of what we love about them are the unrealistic premises. I guess my point is they are escapist stories and not aspirational. And that's ok- after school specials have their place. There is definitely a line of course even in something meant for entertainment that has and can be crossed. And we can discuss them, I think this dynamic has actually made romcoms much less offensive and toxic over the past couple decades.
this isn't just newer rom-coms. Old movies had consent issues, 80s rom-coms had straight-up assault, even 2004's The Notebook was quite toxic. And don't get me started on 40 nights and 40 days. A lot of "sex comedies" of the 2000s were very toxic.
I have to say something here, those romcoms born in wattpad and were made by teenagers that sometimes havent even being in a relationship, or even have a small social life so they dont know more... this narrative has to do a lot in the way we teach women since a very early age "how love should look like" and how they interpretate that fantasy.
This has always been an issue in romcoms, not just modern ones but I agree
Here’s something I noticed about older RomComs, the expressions in their faces added to the humor and charm. It’s getting harder to find leading actors that have full expression of their faces
It’s almost like we spend too much Time on a screen to get to know ourselves and build imagination
We shouldn't have to imagine an actor acting, they should drop the fillers and botox and be able to articulate their facial muscles. @@Alice-jj2rt
It's like Hollywood ONLY cares about casting hot people and making them just look hot the entire time. They forgot that most older romcoms had hot people who could also act well.
which is why we need ayo edebiri on a romcom! hot AND expressive!!
@Gen-ni8xb she was great on SNL!
if they want to bring back romcoms, they need to bring back actual goofiness and pay attention to what made us love them in the early 2000s
Amen! I really hope Barbie's success will end Hollywood's weird fear against whimsy and joy!
FR NOW DAYS NO OFFENCE THEY ARE ALL SHIT RN I HATE IT theres too much cringe , toxic behaviour and bad plots / characters im literally so done
That's what I loved about Anyone But You
fashion element is completely missing from modern romcoms and romance movies in general. its almost like they told the actors to wear whatever's available.
It’s as if they only steal off Primark and H&m racks. There needs to be more diversity in ppl and clothes
no matter how cheesy they can be romcoms can rlly be fun to watch
And it adds to the charm. I don’t always like it when films are overly cheesy, but some cheese makes it fun, especially when it adds to the humor and the best actors can pull it off.
I think the supporting actors are most important I always remember the supporting cast in films like Bridget's friends in Bridget Jones or all the town folk in Runaway Bride or Nottingham hill Underpants scene, Five weddings and a Funeral. I thinks thats what made Easy A so good was the supporting cast.

As a millennial who grew up loving romcoms, I’m just tired of them being horribly written (Netflix = 🤮) with bland people.
Exactly. People who grew up watching them feel tired cuz we can see how formulaic they are. Same archetypes characters, same plots/anatomies, we know what is going to happen, etc... And yes... All these new actors lack screen/presence, no charisma, they all seem 😂 like thinking their chatting between scenes, like they cannot wait to check Instagram. They arent into it, acting isnt that inmerseve 😢
I love 80s, 90s, and 2000s romcoms. Modern romcoms don't do it for me.
@@MermaidMusings7 Why they dont do it for you? Cuz you find them like a lazy attend of the old ones, or they are to far of what made the old ones good (new/ modern structure romcoms are not, you prefer the old way)???
@@niinuu7222 They lack the magic of its predecessors. I don't know how else to describe it.
@@MermaidMusings7 Okey I get it. Maybe it have to do with the chemistry between actors, screen presence like you can feel the charisma of the actors, like they are awake. Or it just the way filmmakers were building these movies.
Its probably just me but I also feel like the film camera vs the digital camera makes a difference too most times. Most older movies filmed on a film camera have this grainy filter which feels nostalgic and dreamy, whereas digital kinda makes it feel like idk a music or a youtube video. The only modern movie i feel had that charm was 'To all the boys..' because it had this very 2018 vsco girl vibe ? lol
I mean ofc the writing , chemistry etc matters too , but just something I noticed
yes, and they don't put effort into colorgrading, adding filters or anything so it gives off a cheap vibe like modern hallmark movies and or tv dramas like "days of our lives."
You should check out the movie Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gossling and Michelle Williams. When they fall in love, the movie is shot on film; when their relationship disintegrates, it switches to digital
Yes because with the release of Crazy Rich Asians in 2018 in theaters and To All the Boys following suit for Netflix. I feel like rom-coms will mostly remain popular on streaming services with a few successful ones in theaters.
A CRIMEEE that Love Rosie was not mentioned in this video!!! One of the best romcoms to have come out in the past decade!!
Me Before You also gets a special mention- Sam Claflin was really in his romcom bag in the 2010s
I looove Sam
So sad he’s so underrated
Hoped for great fame for him after daisy jones but don’t really see much of him(
I watched Only You with RDJ and the chemistry he had with Marisa Tomei is insane like I thought I was interrupting them in some scenes.
That explains some stuff 😅😅
will look that one up not heard of it. thanks
One the films I always thought had great chemistry is Before Sunset with Ethan Hawke.
the thing about rom coms is the only way it works is if the leading stars arre talented and were casted due tot their chemistry and not their names (which is the point of screen tests which hollywood seems to have forgot about to help the nepobabies). my personal favorite rom com at the moment is float starring andrea bang and robbie amell. its such a nice atmospheric film
Honestly Hollywood really slept on Robbie Amell. He’s not only good looking but also really funny and charismatic on screen. I also love him in The Duff
Older romcoms also had proper actors and stars as leads. A lot of modern (Netflix) romcoms have B/hallmark level casting which makes the genre seem unserious.
I just went watched the trailer will keep an eye out for when it's released. I been a big fan of Robbie Amell he can do comedy really well in Upload but also great in action like Code 8.
"While women fantasize about meeting our Prince Charming, men fantasize about doing the bare minimum and being rewarded for it." This was everything! Brava! 👏👏👏
I'm surprised La La Land didn't get a mention, one of the best movies from 2016, and 2016 had a lot of good movies!!
2016 did have a lot of good movies but lala land was a bomb

I think not mentioning the impact of kdramas on rom-coms is an injustice to how influential they’ve been in bringing back the current boom with the genre. Especially with how accessible they’ve been in the past few years to a world wide audience with Netflix
Also Korea is quite a conservative country so the success of kdramas just shows that woman wish for more tradicional and inocente romcoms.
Anyone but you was ACTUALLY like one of those 2000s romcoms, and the first movie in I don’t know how long I would like to REWATCH. A win
I was so pleasantly surprised by Anyone But You

@@LilithmaynotI’m not trying to hate but as someone who went into it with high hopes, and was GREATLY dissapointed, what did you enjoy about it exactly?? Because I feel like I must be missing something 😭
same here, i watched it the other day and I actually LAUGHED several times! Like genuinely laughed, not just a huff! Sydney Sweeney is an awesome dramatic actress, but I truly think she pulled off the romcom as well! Her wit, charm, and emotional reactions made the movie for me!
@@beneesodeinde5170 Me too. But ig that's cus of our expectations. It was a decent rom com. definitely a fresh air in the middle of all these netflix "romcoms". and really gives off a 2000s vibe. but it isn' t all that.
My favorite romcom is Austenland and I still can't believe how the regency/period + comedy formula isn't used more often. Hopefully shows like Brigerton will bring more of those 💜
One of my all-time favoirtes is Ms Pettigrew Lives for a Day. A bit subservise for the rom-coms of its time, being a period film and having the main couple almost be secondary characters, with the title character almost being a self-insert for the viewer. Frances Mcdormand and Amy Adams are charming as hell.
love that movie! amy adams singing if i didn't care makes me misty eyed every time 🥹
Yes. YES. That film is one of my go-to comfort watches (and it introduced me to Ciaran Hinds, so I'm not complaining).
I LOVE that movie
The only thing that takes me out is Frances' accent. It's good for a US actor, but it slips a lot. Still, I rewatch it for the its warmth, the old romance and Amy Adams/Lee Pace!
❤❤❤
I don’t think rom-coms ever left. We had our ups and downs throughout the 90s and 00s and we’ve definitely had some flops in 10s era. But we’re sort of rediscovering what makes rom-coms so special to us again.
I think because romcoms are so character based, you need to have actors with lots of charm and chemistry with their fellow actors and viewers. That’s why I think pairing up actors worked so well, they had more time to work together and it showed. My favorite romcoms are Easy A of course, and this 8 episode series that came out on Netflix over Christmas in 2023 called Dash and Lilly! The actors have so much chemistry! It’s based off this book series and I think the producers framed the show (shot the show idk) in a super interesting way, each episode would switch perspectives between Dash or Lilly and follow them in their parts of the story. I really liked it being shot this way because we got to see so much more of both the main characters, not just one. I’d definitely recommend watching it if you have the time^^
Have you watched 'Anyone But You' yet? The director shot 'Easy A' and I actually enjoyed ABU more surprisingly.
@@TheKarebear666 no but ill totally check it out!
"Writer, director, actor and predator Woody Allen" had me CHOKE on my tea XD XD
Wow. I'm surprised no mention of Anne Hathaway at all. She arguably was the other most known and ubiquitous name attached to rom-coms.
Set it Up is soooooo good! definitely my comfort rom com that's come out in the 2010s- i probably rewatch it once every 2 months or so lol
Romcoms are back. The world is healing!!
I need everyone in this comment section open to watching foreign movies to watch Jab We Met immediately. It's honestly the perfect rom-com, with non-toxic leads and even a deconstruction of the manic pixie dream girl trope.
This! It has wonderful arcs for both leads who have tons of chemistry, a very vibrant supportive family, lots of comedy and so much heart. I rewatch it with my grandparents!
Bollywood rom coms are definitely in a league of their own. They don't make much these days. But 2000s and 2010s bollywood romcoms are just mwah😘👌
if you guys are looking into a solid romcom featuring non-white leads, check out Rye Lane!
Yes! Loved Rye Lane! ❤
me: [not really caring about the subject matter , but also needing background noise to do laundry with] *Tell me sister* !
1 - I'm surprised Judd Apatow's films were left out. They had an impact and were a subgenre of its own for a time.
2 - I think a significant factor in the decline of rom-coms in movies is that tv shows have gotten a lot better in terms of serialized storytelling and leaning into romances that can captivate viewers for *years.* It's simply more difficult to craft something in two hours that can create the same level of emotional investment.
i'd consider apatow's movies as part of the raunchy romcom subgenre! (nudity/gross out humor/shallow female characters/"loser" male leads/etc)
@@ModernGurlz I think those films have more substance than that, especially where the "loser" male lead undergoes genuine growth rather than do the bare minimum to "get," the girl, but okay.
@@BenChanNYCI haven’t seen any of the films but I remember Katherine Heigl complaining about how the movie she was in that he directed was misogynistic and lacked substance. And she was kinda blacklisted bc of that. So I think it’s fair to say she knows more about how bad those films were than any of us. It’s ok to like art even if it’s problematic but you shouldn’t deny the clear bigotry in certain works.
@@BenChanNYCI do think there is something to say about those films but I also think you’re giving them way too much credit. Those movies weren’t romcoms for women or a general audience, they were for men.
@@alylopez3721 Yes, they were from the male pov, but I don't think that discounts them from the discussion as they were different from other films that had been targeted towards men - focusing on emotion more than typical male achievement/ conquest and were quite successful at the box office meaning there was an audience for male-centric rom- coms. Absolutely they were flawed, I just think they were noteworthy.
"while you were sleeping" is my favourite 90's rom com, it's a comfort movie of mine even tho if it wasn't a rom com the set up to the plot could be of a horror/thriller movie's lol, but you gotta put on your rom com googles and get swept up in the charm of the leads and the whole cast tbh and do along with the story :")
Another one that I barely see get mentioned but I love it to bits is "something new" from 2006, the romance is top notch in it and it's light hearted but there's enough realism and drama in it to not be pure fluff!
I always get jumpscared when people categorize The Wedding Banquet as a romcom. There’s a horrifying corrective rape scene against a gay man that people love brush under the rug teehee
Yeah, there are a lot of movies listed in this video that I would not classify as romcoms, like the Wedding Banquet, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, To Wong Foo and But I'm a Cheerleader.
I’ve never watched this movie wdym corrective r*pe? I’m genuinely confused
A similar example is if a lesbian is raped by a man in order to "make her straight." I haven't seen the movie, but I would imagine there is a scene where the gay male character is forced to have sex with a woman in order to 'correct' his sexuality. It's homophobic in nature @@lunaoliveira7965
@@lunaoliveira7965 i believe an attempt to 'make' him straight- the correct sexuality. idk
Idk if you were aware but movies, and books and even music, can have a tiny part in them that would be a completely different genre if it was it by itself, but because Its just a tiny part it doesn't change the genre. For example if a screamo band makes a song with a 30 second Spanish guitar solo (see pierce the veil) it doesn't change the music genre to Spanish folk lol it's still "metal" or wtv. Or like sisterhood of the traveling pants, the sad sub plot with the mom dying could have been it's own movie with a totally different genre label, but it's just a tiny moment from a movie it doesn't change the whole genre. The movie Barbarian had two people meet cute by accidentally renting the same air b&b and they drank wine and danced lol I didn't see anyone saying "how can you classify this as a horror movie it should be a romcom" 😂😂😂 I happen to believe rape scenes are completely UNNECESSARY. There's NEVER a reason to film a rape scene, if it's important to the story then theres ways to tell the viewer other than THAT. But I don't think one scene can totally change the genre of any film.
I love the movie “the wedding date” such a perfect mix of funny, happy, sad, romance and i love the use of the destination and setting to tell the story.
‘It’s Complicated’ is still one of my go to rom-coms. It’s just so good
I feel like it slowly started with Crazy rich asians and To all the boys and then continued with Bridgerton and so on. With Sony making Anyone but You. Netflix also just released the show One Day and although it isn't a RomCom but it has a lot of romantic elements to it. I do feel like ever since 2018 we are seeing more of it.
Speaking of current romcoms, I Want You Back from two years ago with Jenny Slate and Charlie Day was one of the more charming but overlooked ones in recent times.
Not to forget Amazon's Red,white and Royal Blue that surprisingly blew up
Everything you said in this movie is so true! Romcoms barely get respect in the movie industry, and it's so heartbreaking!
Some of my favorite rom-coms include: When Harry Met Sally (which I enjoyed with my boyfriend last Valentine's Day), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (the Valentine's Day before that), Coming to America, and Overboard. I watched this video looking for more recommendations, so the movies you named (most of which I'd never heard of before) got me excited. Thanks!
Book adaptations are probably the industry's best bet since quality original screenplay writing has gone down hill. The success of book adaptations in the genre in recent years has further proven this, and considering the growth that online book communities have had lately, it shouldn't be too hard to find a book that people would be happy to see adapted.
But knowing Hollywood, the bag WILL be fumbled.
I actually think that network TV added to the fatigue of romcoms by the end of the first decade of the 2000’s (Lifetime and Hallmark) which is why they were performing less favorably. We haven’t lost interest in the genre, only that if they started treating plots as formulaic which is why so many people stopped watching them regularly, due to oversaturation. My favorite romcom, the only one I’ve ever bought, is Just Friends and that one is so unique and hilarious that I watch it at least twice a year.
Love that you talked a lot about classic Hollywood! Some of my favourite romcoms come from this period - I definitely recommend Libeled Lady (1936), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Roman Holiday (1953) and Some Like It Hot (1959)! Think that you put clips from all of these films in the video so I'm pleased that you're clearly interested in Old Hollywood as well - love your channel!!
My favorite romcom (and favorite movie in general) is What If? (2013) with Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan
I never see anyone talking about it either
Another sub-category of romcoms I would point out is this fan fiction styled ones like “After”, “Beautiful Disaster”, and “The Other Zoey”. They are like in the same category as “The Kissing Booth” and “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”.
I love romcoms. Some of my absolute favorites are “He’s Just Not That Into You”, “Pretty in Pink”, “10 Things I Hate About You”, and recently “Set it Up”.
I was not expecting to like Set It Up as much as I did!
I’ll admit I almost tried to skip the ad but those dresses were wayyyyyy too good!! They look amazing on you too 😍
I want Glen Powell to become a romcom mainstay, he was great in Set it Up and Anyone But You, he amazingly charming
Wait til Hit Man comes out. It's a blast and he's a star in it. I really wish it was coming out in theaters.
I can’t believe clueless wasn’t mentioned! I loved the charm, set design, wardrobe and music of 90s and 2000s romcoms. Everything these days seems rushed and romcoms are the fast fashion of the movie world. Maybe I’m just older now and it’s the nostalgia, but the Netflix romcoms are just terrible I feel bad for gen alpha
Yeah. When the „multiple movies based on Shakespeare came out“ line dropped, I thought Clueless was gonna be mentioned by name, but I guess not.
I will maintain 'What's your number?' is an underrated classic
And Just Like That…my watchlist has grown. Loved video, though I always wonder which ones is the best when “No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits” conversation starts.
In my opinion Friends with benefits but everyone thinks so differently. 😱
You always do such great work putting together these video essays! This one was about romcoms, but it got me thinking about dramatic romances that I love (romdroms?) like Ever After, A Walk to Remember, and A Walk in the Clouds.
it happened one night 1934, one flew over the cuckoo's nest 1975, and the silence of the lambs 1991 are the three films that won all 5 major categories -if you were curious like i was 😂
I need a master list of all of the romcoms named in this video ASAP
It’s funny how i only recognized the movies from the 1940s and then the 1990s. It’s just something about style that draws me in
Great analysis as always! I would like to add two very different romcoms that I think deserve a shout-out. Silver linings playbook is not just a great romcom with a beautiful and unique backstory, but also was a big hit during the award season, with Jennifer Lawrence winning the Oscar. It's very surprising that it's not talked about more. For me it's both hilarious and tragically realistic at times, all wrapped up in a very beautiful and unique way which makes you feel like you are watching real people, sort of like a Sunday lunch withh your family. Another very different, but also quite underrated film is Netflix's Always be my maybe. It's one the very few romcoms that have come out recently, that I thoroughly enjoyed. The best part is that I didn't even know about Keanu Reeves' cameo, so when he appeared on screen I had the privilege of being just as shocked and excited as the characters in that scene. And I am not even going to mention the soundtrack... Best believe I punched Keanu Reeves has been living rent free in my mind ever since😂😂
glad I'm not alone in my semi-annual viewing of my comfort rom com you've got mail!
I was just talking about Romcoms and how I still watch the ones from 20 years ago instead of current movies!
Elemental, Palm Springs & To all the boys Ive loved are my recent favorite romcoms
RomComs will always be one of my favorite movie subgenres! While there are some definite misses, movies that are cringey, boring or just plain bad, there are way more that are really engaging, emotional, heartwarming, and funny. Some of my favorites are "A Cinderella Story", "13 Going on 30", "Legally Blonde", "10 Things I Hate About You", "Pretty Woman", "Easy A", "Too All the Boys" etc etc.
The video I needed! In the last month I've started watching and rewatching a lot of the romcoms of the 90s and 2000s!
no mention of rye lane the best romcom in recent years yet 💔

anyone but you was AMAZING i can’t stop raving about it. it was perfect and also hilarious, i was cackling out loud while watching
The issue with modern romcoms is that they are either adaptations of wattpad stories, or other badly written scripts.
You can have all the classic tropes, but make it interesting. That's where scenes and dialogues come in.
But more than anything, the acting. And most people try to act over the top when doing a romcom when really it's a balancing act.
I really enjoyed Set It Up. I even rewatched it recently and it was fun.
I also watched Anyone But You. And it just didn't work for me. It should have, but it didn't. It was too corny and cringey and the acting felt off

Romcoms are still huge in Asia and have never had a low point. Romantic dramas, romantic comedies have never ever suffered in Asia just because we aren't the ones churning out mindless Marvel trash. Recent favourites: (From Taiwan) Till We Meet Again, Our Times, You Are the Apple of My Eye, (From Japan) Tonight, at the Movies, (From South Korea) My Sassy Girl, Cyrano Agency, Innocent Steps, Finding Mr Destiny. For me, my all-time favourite romcoms are the gold standard, screwball comedy queen Babara Stanwyck's: The Lady Eve with Henry Fonda and Ball of Fire with Gary Cooper. Also love the Audrey Hepburn, Kate Hepburn ones, and How to Marry a Millionaire with Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall. In the 2010s, I love Leap Year with Amy Adams and Matthew Goode, and also 27 Dresses with Katharine Heigl and James Marsden.

Can you talk about TV romcoms like Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Selfie?

I think rom-coms unfortunately are going to be stuck in streaming platforms. It's not a reliable genre to send to the theater anymore in a time where people are more likely to wait for a digital release (unless it's something so big you think it needs to be seen in theater like a action or with special effects). When I was growing up, it was a lot of rom coms and teen buddy movies. My fave is Maid in Manhattan with JLo for some reason

I think the reason Rom-Coms are failing in the past 10 years is because everyone feels the need to find something to HATE. It's unfortunate because it doesn't hurt to watch a happy-go-lucky movie. But everyone loves to nit-pick instead of just enjoying the ride.
I would like a whole video analysis on No Strings Attached vs Friends with Benefits
I watched Couples Retreat so many times in early adulthood because it was one of the few DVDs my parents had at their house still after I moved out. It's a ridiculous movie with what I'd call a small ensemble cast, but the comedians in it really carry the movie. It's goofy and memorable, and doesn't take itself seriously at all.

Would love it if you guys could post a list here or on Letterboxd cataloguing all these movies- personally would love to go down the list and watch them all.
My two favorite rom-coms star the same people- 50 First Dates and the Wedding Singer. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore both know how to pull off sweet, charming characters who can be absolutely hilarious when needed. I love these movies 🥰🥰
