Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) joins me this week for an episode largely centered around the idea of managing expectations throughout life.
Nathan shares how heâs had to manage expectations of new projects after personal experience with disappointing ones that he thought would be hits and others that were surprise cult classics.
He also talks about managing expectations of his relationships with his parents, helping tame the expectations of actors to get the best out of them on set, and curbing the expectations on things you cannot control versus the things that are within your power.
Awesome episode folks, hope you enjoy it.
NATHAN FILLION (2020) | Inside of You Podcast w/ Michael Rosenbaum #insideofyou - ZĂĄbava
Nathan seems like a real genuine person, and that makes me happy as hell! You hear so many terrible things about certain actors and it makes me happy that he's the person I thought he was.
Every time I see Nathan being himself, I'm reminded what an incredible human being he is. I feel like I just had some therapy watching this, lol.
Imagine if THAT mustache appeared in Firefly...
The whole crew will have a field day roasting their Captain đđđ
Captain Tightpants becomes Captain LipFairy
definitely would roast Mal. Captain Mustache
As soon as he came onscreen I was reminded of the flashbacks episode where they show how he hired Wash back when he had a huge mustache. đ
What's that on your face?" River said to Mal with a confused look.
Zoe walks up to him. " Captain" before Mal can say a second word. Zoe rips the glued on mustache. Jane forces a bonnet in Mal's weathering body. " Enough of this bush dressing, wear the bonnet already. "
Cut to Mal and Jayne on a wagon with their eyes of over the horizon looking for movement. While Mal hams a scorned wife to Jayne.
@@DanTasticEntertainment Captain Magnum p.i. đ
Wow, Nathan Fillion looks like Tom Selleck with that mustache. Great interview as always, very insightful and fun.
He totally does I didn't realize that but now I can't un see it
Man, he'd make a fantastic Magnum PI!
OMG. he does lol
I was thinking more 'handsome Nathan Lane'
I was gonna say Burt Reynolds, but Selleck might be the better match!
"If it's outside of your control, let it go. If it's within your control, *control it*." Wise words!
Very wise indeed.
The secret is, the only thing that one really can control is yourself. The more you master yourself the more you will be in control.
Itâs Epictetus, from the first fragment of the Enchiridion. Our well-educated Nathan is a Stoic (... & a bit of an Epicurean).
How could this guy be more charming?
Damn, he's looking in much better shape than he was in Castle. He could easily jump back into the Malcolm Reynolds role tomorrow.
The real Nathan Drake!
âCrapâ
-Nathan Drake
He has a kind soul!!!
Yes sir
Fact, it is a crime we will never get this
With the stache he's got a young Sully look going
I didnât know I could love Nathan Fillion anymore than I already did. What a lovely and humble man. Thank you for this conversation it brightened my day!
I remember Nathan from back in the day when he was with Ryan Reynolds in a sitcom called "Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place" and I've loved a lot of stuff he's done since, like "Firefly" and "Dr. Horrible," but I have to say that the one thing that's stuck with me the most was his small cameo in the recent "The Muppets" TV Show where he plays himself and it's implied that he boned Miss Piggy. It was as unexpected as it was hilarious. He's always been a great comedic actor, but I also really like that he doesn't just stick to doing comedy and has done some great stuff in other genres.
Nathan. We want more of you. Never die sir.
Nathan Fillion another amazing actor and voice actor from Green Lantern to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 to The Suicide Squad and Buffy The Vampire Slayer where he was just badass. I like his personality because he himself is a fan and understands from a fans perspective. He is a character actor.
Michael's impression of Eastwood absolutely killed me. Will always be my Flash, the Wally West.
I met Nathan Fillion at a photo op a couple of years ago. What a delightful person. He actually took time to make me feel important even though it was a short encounter and I was so nervous meeting him.
Nathan has the Best Mustache I've ever seen since Tom Selleck. đđœđđœđđœđđœđđœđđŸđšđšđ
How does this interview not have more views? It's one of the best interviews ever done.
It's crazy how while this is a conversation with Nathan Fillion it could so easily be a scene from Castle or any of his other shows. He is so charming and engaging - in real life and in his roles. A gem of a person.
I canât wait for Nathanâs staring role in the âTom Selleck Storyâ
Someone green light "Son of Quigley...Down Under" right meow with this absolute gem of a man please.
That actually sounds like an awesome idea!
Just netflixed that an hour ago
Many years ago my family got to meet him at a comic con in Chicago. I was so impressed with him. From the signing to the photo op an hour later, he remembered our names and was extremely nice. Love all his work.
Wow!
đ¶ Take my love, take my land,
Take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free,
You can't take the sky from me. đ¶
Freaking Captain Mal!!!!
I'm so excited for this episode! Love Nathan Fillion and loved him in Firefly. Whenever my mom played Destiny I always enjoyed hearing him as Cayde-6. Thank you so much for asking my question and thank you for having him on the podcast!!
You are the best Michael!
Happy Tuesday ^_^ đ
Have you seen dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? He is hilarious in it!!!
Rosenbaum, you have a great interview style. Sorority Boys was awesome and I laughed so hard through the movie, I thought I was going to split a rib. Fillion filled the room on a zoom call, which is amazing in itself you could host such a great conversation without the person in the room. I love your acting and love to see your honesty in these interviews. Thanks.
100% he's giving me Pedro Pascal vibes with that amazing stash! Seriously, he seems so down to earth & level headed! I LOVED this interview, please have him back on again. I could listen to his stories all day! Great job guys! đ€đâ€
''What about a picture with a guy who looks like Nathan Fillion but a little more annoyed than Nathan Fillion usually is.''
Firefly is my very favorite TV show. Aside from that, I love everything I've seen him in. Buffy, Dr. Horrible, and Castle. Serenity was the first thing I saw him in and it made me a fan. Then I watched Firefly and as I watched the behind the scenes of the show I fell in love with the whole cast. Nathan is great; as an actor, he pulls you in to the story. As I follow his career, I can't imagine anything he does that I won't like. Now, ladies and gentlemen. . . a Firefly reference.
Mal, bad, in Latin. - River Tam
I'm a huge fan of Nathan Fillion. Been following his career ever since he played The Bad Priest Caleb on season 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Castle is my favorite cop show. I truly believe if he was given the opportunity he would have been an Amazing Nathan Drake in The Uncharted Movie. Can't Wait to listen to this one!
He was great as Caleb the priest.
hope you dig it
@@Brook11223 He was incredible
Nathan Fillion did a fan film (about 20 minutes long) of Uncharted recently. It's still on CZcams and it's really good. If you haven't seen it, check it out!
Caleb was my most terrifying Buffy bad guy. *shiver* I thought I'd never be able to watch Nathan in anything. But then FIREFLY! Phew! đ€Ł
I clicked the like button just for seeing Nathan's name as the guest. He has this magnetic personality that I can't help but feel drawn to. Truly a beautiful person, inside and out.
I think getting Ryan Reynolds, Nathan and Michael in on the same movie project would be like trying to capture a barrel of monkeys back in the barrel. They'd give chaotic humor and sharp comedic timing like a 1940's or 50's golden aged movie used to. Just pure gold.
Btw....I have always wanted to tell Michael that he needs to make a merch shirt, that says
"I'M DA 'BAUM!" I used to always say that whenever he did some amazing scenes on Smallville, where he just knocked it out the park. I want to see him wear it for his show. Because Michael, you are. đ„°đđ
I can't believe how great he is. I was already a fan, but damn he's a nice dude
I like it when Michael has guests that you can tell he has a connection with. That was cool, just friends catching up.
He will always be Captain of Serenity. Amazing. Our family watched the series over and over again. â€ïž
This is such a GenXer podcast, which is something I definitely appreciate.
I have been a fan of Nathan since Firefly, however the character of his that stole my heart ...where I don't even see his handsome face (great stash btw), is Cayde-6. I cried when Cayde died. I became a Hunter because Cayde made me smile, and often laugh out loud. The fact he can bring an inanimate character, Exo-Robot, character to life with just his voice ...I'm awed. Destiny isn't the same without him. I'm also an author like Castle ...loved that character. Now on Rookie ... I love everything he does.
Hear, hear! I finally got to playing Forsaken after a long hiatus, and I was unprepared to find out he died. A most emotionally delivered performance by Nathan for sure.
Michael, your Johnny Carson impersonation was pure gold; glad you got Ed McMahon ROTFL.
When Nathan said you know how kind you are I have a very short story. I did something for a co-worker and she said I am to kind. My response was "No, I am the right amount of kind." I believe people could be kinder to everyone.
the guest with the best camera so far.
What a lovely pair of guys. I love Nathan Fillion. Heâs so funny and so inspiring, Michael is so sweet and interesting. They should be in a movie or series together â€â€
Richard Castle is such an iconic character I wish they had made 10 seasons
I would trade 10 seasons of Castle for 5 seasons of Firefly any day.
Been a fan of this dude since Two guys a girl and a pizza place, always delivers top notch performances. Keep kicking ass Mr.Fillion!
Same here, he was SO funny as Johnny †đ I'm glad it was mentioned, loved him and Ryan Reynolds ever since that show đ„°
Nathan Fillion is by far my favorite actor. I saw Castle so many times âđ» He seems such a cute person in real life âșïž
I love that his whole family has gift closets. My husband teases me because I use a closet in our garage as a gift closet, but now I am going to tell him Nathan Fillion does too. I am not the only one.
Nathan's a cool guy, super down to earth and has an every other man type quality. You jus wanna see people like Nathan win
I love Nathan and have done for a long time, always following his career. And this episode was so good! Not only is he funny, talented and very articulate, heâs also ruggedly handsome. And he is right up there with Tom Selleck and Ted Lasso in the moustache department. Such a good bloke! Love him. Thanks Michael for another great episode!
And thanks for my shout out from the StageIt win. Probably the only time Iâll hear my name on IOU. đ

So inspiring. I knew I liked Mr. Fillion but now I love him. Thanks for this.
And you would have been an excellent teacher/therapist
I am just a grandmother from Tulsa Oklahoma but I just love your podcast! My husband and I are watching Smallville on Hulu for the first time. At the end of every one of your podcast I just wish I could give you a hug. You are enough! Donât forget that
Michael is very successful to me and i love his podcast! Will always love Lex and what his character was to Smallville!
Nathan did a damned good job on all the castle series and loved firefly series and the movie serenity. Wish he did another movie as they left it open when it came to ending of that.
Why does this only have 101k views (at the moment). It was great. Rosenbaum was great. Fillion is awesome! The conversation between them was so natural. Amazing! Sounds just like my buddies and I hanging out. Loved it! Great job.
Just turned 42 and hearing Nathan's advice about letting go things outside your control... best advice ever.
I absolutely loved that it ended with "Love you man". "Love you, too". This was my first "Inside of You" video and I can't wait to see them all!
I stumbled upon your channel while looking for interviews with Nathan and your show came up. I loved you on Smallville, and I've watched and heard you in movies and games - but I didn't know about your show. (How did that happen?!)
I watched the show and was totally entertained! Now I've gotta go back and watch every show you've ever done! I LOVE IT! And now I'm addicted! AWESOME!! You drop your commercials in the show like old radio programs, and it just makes me feel happy. I gotta buy merch!
M. Rosenbaum and N. Fillion in the same video... The 'Like' button has never been hit faster than it did just now.
Thanks Michael. Nathan is such a lovely guy, a great actor and above all a great human being.
Thanks Michael, Nathan is one of my most favorite of all people, that I will never meet! â„ïž
LOVED Nathan on " Castle ".. SUCH a Great Show and he and Stana had SUCH Amazing Chemistry!!! xoxo
He is always such a "real guy' when I see him interviewed. Huge Castle fan here. Great interview. Thanks!
What a just utterly lovely man. Cool when your heroes turn out to actually be good people.
This was amazing, Nathan is an absolute sweetheart.
Love this guy! Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog is one of my favorite musicals. Seems like a genuinely nice and humble guy. Awesome interview
Couldn't agree more!
He really is a nice guy. When I was a kid I was working at my small town movie theater and we happened to have a promo showing of Serenity with some of the actors. Nathan being one of them. I was working the snack bar and during the middle of the movie he came out to get a hot dog. He was with some other guy. Not entirely sure who the other guy was. Anyway, I was just a kid and I was a huge fan of Buffy and Firefly so I was pretty nervous and too shy to like fanboy out or anything. I tell Nathan that it's $2 for the hot dog or whatever and he starts to go for his wallet and the guy with him looks at me and says "No, no, no. He doesn't have to pay for it. Put it on our tab." and I'm like "Uhh...we don't have tabs here..." and I start to kind of freak because I didn't want to make a big deal about it but I'd get in trouble if inventory was off. And the other guy starts to brow beat me a bit and then tells me to find my manager. Nathan then calmed the situation down, got rid of the other guy, politely paid for the hot dog and went back to the movie. Nothing all that dramatic but little moments like that say a lot about someones character.
As I continue to watch and listen to these, I've come to realize I think I'm here for the therapy more than I am the guests.
The guest list on this podcast is just amazing. Great podcast.
appreciate it :)
Man, I'm a city worker, it's so nice to hear two grown men have a conversation without swearing.
This was my favourite one yet. Nathan is so natural and unguarded.
Here for the intro, but stayed because Firefly + Nathan Fillion is one of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time. Another great podcast fo sho!
OMG! Joey Buchanan from On Life To Live! Yes when I was 16 my girlfriend would make me watch soaps. Love, Nathan Fillion. Great podcast, Michael.
LOL I remember him on OLTL but love him from Firefly.
While Nathan voices Green Lantern, he would have been the perfect live-action GL when he was a bit younger (or maybe now as an 'elder' Hal Jordan). Great guy, fun actor and can pull off confidence and arrogance that is not remotely off-putting. Dude's never done a bad role. Amazing.
Michael I really love your show. I recommend it to my young adult children so they know that it is okay to have feelings and talk about them. It certainly helps me with my anxiety to know that I am not alone with it. Also Nathan is great in everything he does. Still mad about Firefly being cancelled.
Same. FOX did the show so wrong. They aired the episodes out of sync on purpose so that it WOULD fail. They didn't like the show in the first place. Joss had to fight them every step of the way.
Firefly remake on Disney plus I hope it's as good as the original
So much energy. And charm. What a lovely man!
Another great one Michael Thank you for all theseđ

Michael - I've watched a few of your interviews with this podcast, and just want to let you know I'm impressed. I think you are an exceptional interviewer. I really like how you compose your questions. It really comes at the person from a different angle, and allows them to reveal things about themselves that is very relatable as a person. And you relate enough about yourself that it allows your guest to open up and reveal that realness about themselves. And maybe we have similar tastes, but I really like who you choose to have as guests. So, keep up the great work. You're doing a fantastic job.
This is so fantastic, thank you so much.
The difference between lucky people and unlucky people is perspective. I've got to remember that.
I loved your show today. It always brings the guest as the essence of the show.
There have been times, in this humble ministers body, when I had to stand at the pulpit, and know everything that I had written in the message of the day. I tried to not bring notes, bc as it could be with acting ( last acting project I had was in a school play, " The Children's Hour ", back in 1974 ), so it is for ministers. To tell myself that I could do it, and then leave it in God's hands, and prove him and myself, ' better than I thought it could be '. And then there were times, that I really had to struggle. One moment outside of our church. A bad fight had gone on, I held onto a young boy's body who had been shot, placed partially on my lap, as someone ran to get his grandmother. Then three hours later, it would be time for a special 11pm service. How could I effectively remember everything that I had to say... ( I use the three dots when I write to symbolize an important Jewish word, ' Selah '. Time to reflect, pause, meditate or talk to God.) when my every thought was on that 6 yr old boy. So, I said that this was more important than what I had studied to say... So, I gave it all up to God and made my message about him.
Michael and Nathan, I marvel at your capacity to have a process, when presenting a line that you have to make real.
Talent, talent and more talented people on your show. And they are honorable to their talent. You've had a great crop this year to interview. Keep up the good work. đđđ
