- How Clancy Brown was convinced that they had mistakenly casted him for his role in The Shawshank Redemption… even on his flight to go shoot
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Clancy Brown (Shawshank, SpongeBob) joins me this week to share his personal experience with impostor syndrome throughout his career from its inception to highlights like The Shawshank Redemption. Clancy talks about how the industry had changed over the decades and how he feels blessed to have found voice acting for the presence it allows him to keep. We also get into some good ole Lex talk, how fame can drastically change a set, and even his personal experience working with the late great Sean Connery.

Movie law states that when you see Shawshank on TV, no matter if its five minutes in or just five minutes left, you are required to stop whatever it is you're doing, sit down and watch it.
This law is real.
Absolutely, 100%.
There’s a verb to describe that: being “Shawshanked.”
Truth
I agree completely.
Clancy Brown is the type of actor that makes everything he's in better.
Top tier character actor. Totally agree. :)
agreed
he is to Lex Luthor what Kevin Conroy is to Batman
"You play them cards, fancy Dan."
Absolutely. When he plays a character you can't imagine anyone else ever doing it after that point. He simply dominates the character and makes it his own - and he gets an emotional reaction at such a visceral level that you actually despise or love him depending on who he is playing.
Brown is criminally under rated. he has real acting skills at the highest level. He _becomes_ his character and has that undefinable, elusive "presence" on film.
'underrated"?
sure kid.............sure.
Hes the Charles Bronson of today he needs his own independent drama/thriller/vengeance story ... here I'll give a pitch... Brown plays a retired prosecuting attorney dying of liver failure or crohn's decides to take out a sexual predator that had cheated the system years prior ... boom Sundance here we come lol
@@TheSighphiguy oh yeah, you're right. The name 'Clancy Brown' is on every cinemaphile's short list of great character actors to this day....you shmuck. I'm pretty sure your name translates to "A wet fart in church" by the way.
#Facts
@@markvito746 You can call the film, "Shit happens".
That movie was so perfectly cast. From Tim Robbins to Morgan Freeman to Clancy Brown to James Whitmore. All brilliant.
The fact that THIS guy is this humble is refreshing. The names he drops and his admiration for them is stunning.
I think he seems super creepy
@@neo7759what?? How the fuck did you come across with that interpretation?
@@vhscopyofseinfeld Honestly ask yourself if Clancy Brown doesn't give you the creeps even a little?. Go watch the new Dexter and pay close attention to him. Dude is creepy as fuck
@@neo7759 You're weird as fuck
@@neo7759 No, not even a little. But I first saw him in Highlander and he's been cool af for me, ever since.
One of the best "bad guy" actors ever right up there with Alan Rickman
Women seem to love him.
I remember seeing him on tv in Bad Boys when I was a little kid in the 80s. 2 things: I hated him and couldn't fathom how Sean Penn was the same guy from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I must have been 8 or 9... I didn't understand real acting yet.
@@TheKitchenerLeslie Clancy Brown is one of my all time favorite actors. He is a total class act. He may not be a typical "Leading Man" but he brings quality and class to every project that he is in. And he seems to be a genuinely nice guy, one that I would love to have over for a cook out and share a beer.
@@RLKmedic0315 You always remember him.
@David Casse Yeah Rutger Hauer was pretty awesome. He also played a couple of anti-heroes that were pretty good.
Everyone in that movie was perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Clancy : You deserved to be there. A giant among giants.
Shawshank is such an awesome movie.
Not just awesome. Beautiful. Really tugs on your heart strings. Same with The Green Mile, which deserves a shared 2nd spot beside shawshank.
Brown was absolutely one of the reasons this movie was so successful. One of my favorites of all time. Have to mention that he was also awesome in Highlander. He's such an excellent villain it's strange to see him as his true self.
Mua huh huh --> as he smashes candles in a church. There can be only one!
sucks he didn't get paid to play the Kurgan in Highlander,or got paid so very little anyway.
He was amazing in Carnivale too.
The one armed man from the fugitive too
He was great in Starship Troopers, too.
From Highlander & Shawshank, to his countless voice overs, Clancy is an absolute incredible talent!
Clancy Brown deserves a lot more recognition than he’s received.
I love that he names all the actors that don't get attention-actors like Bill Sadler who have been low key killing it for years. I've been a huge fan of Clancy Brown for years. When I see his name I know I'm going to get top shelf performance.
Not only is Bill Sadler a pretty low key actor, his low key stuttering in Shawshank was just a priceless bit of character acting.
Bill is one of my favorites. For a while, he had his own website, that he would frequently post on, and chat with the rest of us (board has been gone for years now). He talked about something he did as a kid, that was funny, and I told him something I once did, and he was laughing. He also talked about filming The Pacific, and something funny that happened. With the filming, he was marching some soldiers across the field, wasn't paying attention of what was ahead of him, and smacked his lower body into a stump. Bill was really a cool guy to talk to. I have a friend who with other Bill fans, would have a gathering at a hotel with Bill and they would just have fun and talk. Sadly I never got to participate (was broke).
He is so good he is invisible to me. Never the lead, but absolutely convincing in the role.
Clancy Brown, one of the most underrated actors in my book.
Yeah hes one of my favorite actors in all of film or television. He has so many relatively minor roles where he just steals the spotlight and shines, his voice-work in cartoons and video games is just top-fucking-notch. Everything he does is excellent, and he seems like just a mad chill dude also.
Benjul Ocampo. One of the most ignorant commenters on CZcams.
cut the BS. If his story about the audition is true, by your metric, he was not underrated, but overrated. Regardless of his acting performance in the movie. Remember, most actors have no ambition to become a block buster lead character. Brown seems to be just fine with the roles he gets. He also enjoys having a lot less paparazzi buzzing around him.
I have to say that Clancy Brown’s Captain Hadley is the Captain Hadley that I had in my head when I read “ Shawshank… “ in high school ( thirty-none-of-your-business years ago…) . He is one of the best “ Villain “ actors I have had the pleasure of watching in my viewing history! Wonderful actor ( and apparently a really decent guy )!
You know how good an actor someone is when they're the most viscerally believable character in The Shawshank Redemption. My brain struggles to even comprehend that he and his characters could be the same people, which I know is often the point of acting, but still, it's incredible.
@Joe Doe One of the best, for certain.
@Joe Doe You never catch him acting. He's always the guy.
Thanks for carving with your brilliant statement what I fell about Brown, but I couldn't to spit out of me, since I ever seen him in his first interview in youtube.
Shawshank Redemption isn't nearly the masterpiece it was without him. Remarkable actor.
This comment doesn't make any sense
@@matthewbishop8395 Matthew, Matthew, Matthew.....
Clancy helped make that film a masterpiece for sure...though there were a lot of great character actors in that one.
I would agree, one of the most intense/insane bad guy personalities ever and it's only overshadowed by the movie itself, which was only as good because of that dark and evil side to it which Clancy made happen and why they chose him.
Cool baseball
As others have said, Clancy Brown is extremely underrated as an actor/performer. What a great human being.
No. If you're in the the 2nd best movie ever, you are by definition not underrated. Cut the BS. Clancy has done whatever he wanted, he's that popular. He's just being modest about things as to not project an ego. We never see what happens during auditions, but if his story is true, he was more overrated than underrated, regardless of how good he was in the movie.. My 2c bro. Peace.
I think Clancy Brown absolutely dominated every scene he was in. His portrayal of Captain Hadley added the necessary element of menace to what otherwise would have been a timid story about a prison break.
Clancy Brown is a sensitive gentle person. He's not at all like the amazing psycho characters he plays.
"I'm not going to count to three. I'm not even going to count to one. You WILL shut the f*** up NOW or I'll sing you a lullaby!"
This was one cold 🥶 ass line.
He one of my favorite villain's, great in highlander, great as the voice of lex luthor , great in everything he does really.
demonocus metalocus also Mr Krabbs I think..
Brother Justin in Carnivale...great stuff!!!
Scared the crap out of me in Highlander. First time I'd seen him and I was just creeped out. He rocks.
Villain’s what?
In LOST, he played the guy that handed Desmond Hume down the task of typing in the numbers into the ancient computer every couple of hours.
His personality in real life is such a contrast compared to his roles.
Mr Krabs is my favorite 😆
First sign of an excellent actor.
He's such a nice guy. I remember one summer of great fun with him and his sister,in California.
PROVES what a fine actor Clancy Brown is.
I knew him in Jr. HS. Nicest guy in my class.
Clancy Brown is just this... Incredibly imposing physical presence, this storm-wind intensity, this voice that seems like it could rattle rivets out of the hull of a battleship... And he just seems like the *nicest* guy...
"You smell too good. I can't get this out."
I can't get over that.
Yeah, they should have asked a big fat smelly grip on the set for the reading instead.
@@ADAPTATION7 Kind of ironic that there were no women in the film.
@@markoman5267 True, but then again: It was a movie about life in prison.
Hopefully sjw's and feminists don't whine & complain and try to cancel him for saying that. That's how insane the left is nowadays.
@@ComputerLearning0 Two sides of the same coin. Say something against Obama? You're cancelled. Say something against Trump? Your cancelled. Say something against Jesus? You're cancelled. Say something against Muhammad? You guessed. You're cancelled.
Clancy is one of those actors I could sit and listen to stories from all day long. He's just got that easy way of saying everything and a real point of view with humble origins that is so relatable.
I can’t see any other actor play that character. Mr. Clancy Brown is the man! Thank you
Yeah, Clancy Brown is a fantastic actor! Such skills combined with a physically intimidating present. Yet he has great comedic chops and can play against type so well.
All they had to do is watch any scene of his in ‘Highlander’ and they would’ve given him the part.
Shawshank Redemption and Highlander are two of the best movies I have ever seen. Until your comment, I hadn’t realised that Captain Hadley and the Kurgan were the same actor!!! Wow, some actor.
He only did the church scene in Highlander once. He wouldn't do it anymore than one take because of how vulgar it was.
@@mysteryg1826 Happy Halloween ladies! 😛
That's probably why he got the role even when he screwed up the audition.
The guy has never mailed it in. He is so good. As the villain in Shoot to Kill, he made you hate him. Brilliant.
I don't think Clancy Brown realizes how good he is at acting when he downplays himself like this. He always has screen presence in all of the films he's been in and that requires a lot of talent. If I ever meet him in person I would be fangirling really hard.
He's humble.
I agree. We all know what a great actor he is, always consistently brilliant in every role. Either he's too humble or somewhat insecure about his talent, who knows. I know he's been treated unfairly, like when he wasn't even paid for his scenery-chewing performance in Highlander. He's always interesting to watch, even in small roles like the alien in Mandalorian.
Really liked this guy ever since Earth 2, and didn’t realize he was the Highlander villain for ages. His mocapped work in the game Detroit was awesome!
Someone else who has actually heard of Earth 2!
If Earth 2 was so good, why didn't they make Earth 3?
@@NeoTechni I’m sure they’re working on it... If Clancy Brown and Tim Curry are in it, I bet it will be cool! Seriously, I don’t recall much, since the only ep I’ve seen In about 30 years is the pilot(on vhs), and the show didn’t last long. Mr. Brown and his daughter driving some sort of moon rover left a lasting impression though! 🥂
Wow, Earth 2! I loved that show. It should have been on for years. The underground people!
@@cherylchristian5673 Yeah, they were creepy! Carried spears, as I recall. Fun show!
Mr. Brown, you were a key character to this epic all-time favorite flick for sure.
Clancy was also terrific as the US Attorney General in Billions.
Had an amazing chat with Clancy Brown on Twitter one evening. Awesome fella.
That’s so cool!! What did you guys talk about?
When Hadley enters Boggs cell, calmly removes his hat with that icy stare....there’s something truly frightening about what Clancy brown brings to that brief scene
For a man who has basically been scaring me since the early 80s, he seems genuinely nice and pleasant!
One of the most underrated iconic talented entertainers there is!!
What a great story. The idea that the man who played the coldest, cruelest character in the movie is this big teddy bear who thought they made a mistake when they flew him in for a read is just so damn charming.
The two best Lex Luthors ever.
Earth 2 is where I first saw Clancy. He has stood out ever since.
The greatest Lex Luthors ever discussing one of the greatest movies ever. I love it
Clancy Brown as Career Sergeant / Private Zim STARSHIP TROOPERS!!!!
MEDIC!!
@@DW3010 shit!!!! i should of said that!!! good one, mate!!
I love Clancy Brown so much! Thank you for letting us see more of him!
He stills scares me when he played 'The Kurgan' in Highlander! Clancy is SUPERB he underates himself!
The Shawshank Redemption is largely based on Stephen King's short story (Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption). Clancy's previous film appearance was in King's "Pet Cemetery II" where his performance as a sheriff was critically acclaimed by the horror film "academy" (nominated for best supporting actor). So, it's pretty clear -- if he really did have a bad audition -- that the film's writers, producer, and director clearly wanted him and the audition was merely a formality.
Largely based? 100% based. Damn near word for word
@@chrismason7066no
Sat next to him on a flight from Vancouver to LA many years ago, he was a very nice, warm person
Love this guy so humble but a amazing actor
He deserved the Oscar for that performance.
He messed up the audition and they still gave it to him and he made the role famous. Lol. Destiny still arrives.
I’d say Highlander made him famous.
In The Highlander, the Kurgan put him on the map.
He was probably the guy they wanted and didn't care. They knew he could do it.
I always liked seeing Mr Brown in any movie.
He is one of those actors who immediately makes the movie worth watching.Great screen presence, first class scene steeler.
What he definitely had going for him, regardless of a seemingly bad audition, was his look. He just was the guy for that role and they knew it.
I had a business in Studio city and he would go to the donut shop next to my store every week or so. Him and Terry Crews.
Clancy Brown NEVER disappoints.
He was awesome in this movie. So many incredible actors in this movie and amazing script.
First movie I can remember him in was Pet Cemetery 2.
Totally won me over as The Kurgan when I was a kid. Loved his acting ever since.
Clancy Brown is the greatest Lex Luthor that ever was!
Francisco Q It’s hilarious you’re writing this on Michael Rosenbaum’s channel.
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive It's still true though.
John Dies At The End is one of my favorites and Clancy NAILED IT!
Clancy brown is one of the finest actors of our time. Just does not get enough credit. Thanks for this. ❤
He was so awesome in this movie. He brought it to another level.
The fact that he's on one of my favourite films, Highlander and also one of my daughter's favourite cartoons, Spongebob Squarepants as the voice of Mr.Krabs just shows how much a legend this actor is.
You could put Clancy in ANY movie and he would do justice to whatever role he was doing. Underrated actor.
"One of the BEST MOVIES EVER MADE....period." I fully concur. 🌱
I didn't recognize him, so I looked him up to see who he played in the movie, and was shocked. Nice to see he's been a successful voice actor.
It tickles me that the guy who voiced MY FAVORITE version of Lex Luthor is also the same guy who voices Mr. Krabbs from Spongebob!
Numerous voice narrations on commercials and TV programs too.
You ought to check him out as Kurgan from “Highlander”
I'm old now 40 I remember before int in school and they rolled in a TV and VHS combo weird how small the tvs were then but we had eyes like superheroes lol where we could watch movies strict school but our art teacher was so layd back let us watch highlander stand by me terminator I loved highlander I've only ever watched it on VHS il have 2 rewatch it agane
Always loved this actor. Ever since I saw a movie called Bad Boys, (Sean Penn, not Will Smith) where Clancy played a prisoner who was a heavy. Funny how Shawshank saw him as a guard but still the heavy. Great actor.
Viking. Love the part where he found the radio is his cell
That movie was intense!!
Bad Boys is a pretty authentic take on gladiator academies
My youngest two just watched this with me recently and I felt so much pride in their instant appreciation of the film. It is so good.
Clancy is such the gentleman...even though he's the go-to actor for villains.
Clancy is in the new season of Dexter! Coolsville!
Massively underrated. Always love him in any role he plays.
Clancy Brown is one of the greatest actors ever. He deserves far more credit than he has ever been given. It's a crime that he hasn't been given the credit he so deserves.
I loved him as Brother Justin in Carnivalè. Underrated show
Loved seeing him pop up in the mandalorian!
Always thought his character Hadley was the most memorable character in the film. A real monster.
I'd watch Clancy Brown mow his lawn for two and a half hours. That's how much I love that man's work.
I met him in person. He's a really cool guy. Talked to him about star wars for 20mins..
Good stuff
I really like that he’s clearly a nice guy who just couldn’t face shouting at a young girl. It’s such a sweet aside that says so much about his character and the kind of man he is.
One of my favorite movies, of course, and I couldn't imagine any other actor or on the planet playing that part better, perfection and so many actors would have over-acted it, how lucky we were that he got the part.
"They had all those great actors, and me" You belong on anyone's list of great actors
Great character actor. Great voice actor too. Clancy Brown is great.
Always been a fan of clancy
Man, I love this guy so much. Of course, it started with the Kurgan, but I remember being a kid and being soooo impressed by him in "Shoot to Kill", where he showed played such a different character. Then I saw him later in Earth II (where I had a bot of trouble completely trusting that he really was a good guy, thanks to previous experiences), Shawshank and Starship Troopers, and again much later, in "Carnivale" - all great parts. His sonorous voice is impossible to disguise, so even behind all the make-up of Burg, he could be picked out.
Seems like such a likeable fellow (unlike so many of his characters). Looking forward to seeing him in what I hope is a prominent role in the new Dexter.
I want to see Clancy, Eric Gurry, Sean Penn, Alan Ruck, Ally Sheedy, Esai Morales, and Warren 'Tweety' Jerome on one of those Josh Gad zoom reunion videos.
CLANCY BROWN IS AN ACTORS ACTOR. THIS MAN COULD ACT LIKE A TREE AND IT WOULD BE AWESOME! I LOVE THIS GUY!
I had the chance to meet Clancy Brown a few years back, I've got to say from personal experience.. this man is every bit a true Gentleman if ever there was one... had a great time talking too him. A fine person indeed.
He's a lot of fun too.One Summer,My friend and I were following Clancy from his place to Venice beach, heading out onto the freeway,my car behind his black Impala convertable, and his sister Beth was sitting in the passengers seat. She started lighting and throwing firecrackers back at us. They would hit the windshield like little explosions. My friend was driving, and we had such a hard time seeing the freeway lane. lol.
"Step aside Mert, this f*ckers having himself and accident..."
I mean, the actor playing Mert, Jude Ciccolella, is no slouch at playing a heavy himself. Beating up a bound Bruce Willis in Sin City as well as Bogs... Absolutely murderers row of great character actors in Shawshank.
Yeah,but this is about Clancy.
@@xScooterAZx Does he act in a vacuum? That whole scene on the rooftop is a collaboration. This is no disrespect to Clancy.

The most amazing thing about Shawshank was that it came out with little fanfare or promotion. I went to some random mid-week showing back in 1994 not expecting much & left having seen one of the greatest films of the last 30 years.
Eating up Clancy's stories today. Thank you very much for speaking with him and recording it.
This guy's a legend.
Shawshank, Dexter, Highlander, and Bad Boys, Clancy always leaves his mark in these great stories…
Don't forget the DC Animated Universe
Buster Scruggs!
Carnivale
The insecurity at every level of the acting game is amazing! I couldn’t imagine anyone else in that role!
Clancy Brown seems true blue. Most of the time, I think actors are just doing a false modesty schtick
Shawshank is one of my ALL time favorite movies.... and Clancy was amazing in it... love hearing behind the scenes stories... thank you!!
Clancy Brown's characters as Byron Hadley and Viking were scary as hell. In other words, he nailed his roles in his prison movies!
He "nails" all his roles. :}
I can’t believe they would NOT have chosen him for the part of Hadley! He was just SO perfect!
Probably one of the finest pictures ever projected onto the cinema screen by light and lens. That Opera record scene where Andy blares the vocals of those angelic voices and Red says "I have no idea to this day what those two Italians ladies were singing about, truth is I don't want to know..." as the entire prison stops to listen... what a moment in film composition.
My dad worked (as a guard) at the Ohio State Prison where they filmed it. It was pretty close to the time that the movie was set in. He told me about the towers and he had a Thompson machinegun etc. His only career advice he gave me was "Don't ever be a prison guard".
I don’t know why I was so against watching the film for years, and then finally I started watching it and just got so pulled in. Clancy Brown stood out to me, and I said “Oh my god, it’s Mr. Krabs, that’s amazing” So talented, so diverse, and I see here now, such a nice guy.
Also Lex Luthor, from the DC Animated Universe.
Are you ready kids!?!
Mr. Brown is one of my favorite actors.

I saw this clip and came back to see it again. Team CLANCY BROWN !!
When I am watching some random movie I haven't seen before because it looks interesting, I usually am wondering if it will be good or not. But if Clancy makes an appearance, or even just his voice at first, like in Cowboys and Aliens, I smile because I already love it. I get to watch Clancy Brown.
