Clancy Brown (Shawshank, SpongeBob) joins me this week to share his personal experience with impostor syndrome throughout his career from its inception to highlights like The Shawshank Redemption. Clancy talks about how the industry had changed over the decades and how he feels blessed to have found voice acting for the presence it allows him to keep. We also get into some good ole Lex talk, how fame can drastically change a set, and even his personal experience working with the late great Sean Connery.

Clancy Brown's Kurgan is one of the greatest movie villains of all time.
It made me smile with unbridled joy that Clancy brought out Kurgan’s voice on The Mandalorian.

I doubt any other actor could have pulled off The Kurgan like Clancy did. Big, brutal, careless, ruthless, insane and smart. Clancy made that character mean something.

He really was amazing in that role. Watching him was like watching Agent Smith in the Matrix. I was blown away.
@@ThemeOfSecrets He definitely did an amazing job with the role! The Kurgan was born 6 years before Jesus. Clancy played the character as someone who has been around since the invention of the wheel. The character has seen everything and done everything. Example, when the girl says "Hi! I'm Candy", Kurgan's response was "Of course you are", as in he's heard that line a million times before. Clancy perfectly nailed all that about the character, the seen it all and done it all parts. That's the reason why it would have been unlikely for another actor to have done better than Clancy. Lambert also did a great job with his character! Lambert played the character as someone who has been outcast by society way too many times and the emotional toll shows. Connery also did well with his character. Connery played Ramirez as more of a fun-loving upper-class character. Roxanne Hart also did great! The two middle aged actors playing the bumbling detectives also did great. Still, the film is far from perfect, but that's because the production was on the fly as they filmed. All the actors were on their A-Game with this film project.
He was very good in his portrayal of the sadistic guard in Shawshank Redemption. Actually, he's been very convincing in all of his roles.
Especially Mr. Krabs. Lol

Yup, I've never doubted him. Now, Lambert, that fool couldn't keep the manbaby out of his eyes for way too much of that flick! He ruined it for me.
Also the evil Brother Justin in Carnivale - probably his most extended live action role.
You have to have a percentage of the character in you. Larry Linville said that in an interview re. : M*A*S*H's Major Burns.
Clancy Brown's role of the bad guy in Highlander MADE it the great movie that it was. The fact he was not paid for his major part in its making, is criminal!
Yea I missed a paycheck on LXG movie which featured Sir Connery.
Well said; you really need a good villain to make the hero look good and the struggle real, Clancy Brown absolutely sold that role!

Highlander. A movie about three immortals. A Scotsman played by a Frenchman, an Egyptian played by a Scotsman, and a Russian played by an American.
Maybe the remake will see the highlander played by a Samoan guy, Ramirez played by an elderly Thai lady and the Kargen played by a petit teenaged white girl.
Best casting ever 🎉😂

Clancy Brown is just as iconic in this movie as Sean Connery. Together, they elevated it from just okay to a cult classic. Clancy Brown deserves so much credit for launching this franchise.

I also liked him in "Pathfinder" I think it was about the Vikings attacking the Indians. Believe it was Karl Urban as the viking child raised by Indians. He actually learned a extinct Viking dialect for that movie and of course looked intimidating as hell in all that leather and fur.
Man, the fact that he got no money yet gave such an iconic performance only means that he’s truly dedicated to the craft. I love Clancy Brown ❤️
Clancy Brown is one of those actors I am always glad to see in stuff and wish he was in more. Every time he pops up I'm like "That's awesome, he's in this"
I wish Lance Hendrikson did some more these days. I figured he was just too old but I saw him in a commercial a couple years ago and dude has still got it.
@@BlazingOwnager, nice. I love Lance Henriksen. First time I ever saw him act was in “Pumpkinhead” & he made me laugh, cry & stare at him in terror. He’s one of those great, unappreciated & underused Actors, as well.
My other favorite? Billy Zane. His performance in “Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight” was the absolute best. He seemed like he was having a lot of fun in that movie.
That's kind of a ropy way to view things. Like, you could accuse any artist of not being "true" if they ask for money, but these folk still have to eat and pay rent.

They paid him shit and treated him like shit and yet he'll go to all the events and talk to the fans and sign stuff. They really don't deserve Clancy Brown. There was some Highlander anniversary not too long ago and both Sean and Chris blew it off but Clancy went and talked to the fans and signed everything. Really a rare person.
Clancy is a brilliant (bad) character actor. He was the best character in the entire Highlander movie, and didn't even make any money. That's dedication to your work. Kudos Mr. Brown.
It suck that didn't get paid he did such great job playing that character and really drove the movie. I don't think it would have been as good if Schwarzenegger played the part. I'm glad he did get the part.

Rosenbaum doesn't ask why he would do it for no money because he was probably been there himself. An actor will do these things for exposure in hopes it will lead to bigger things. I'm sure the size of Clancy's demo reel doubled after Highlander, even though he was also great in The Bride.
Highlander is one of my favourite films and Clancy was amazing in it.
One of my top films, I just hope they don't try remaking it.

I met Clancy Brown in an elevator. At the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL. Just a couple of years after, “Highlander”. Nicest guy and so humble being recognized. Minus the linchpins holding his head on his shoulders!!
Clancy was outstanding as the Kurgan! No other actor would have done it better! Clancy's portrayal of the Kurgan really cemented the film and helped make it into the cult classic that it is.
Clancy is a great actor plus he is a big feller. I can't help thinking Hollywood could and should have used him as a major star more effectively.

Clancy Brown is a star in his own right, he was just as much a part of what made Highlander as epic as it is. He always brings a strong performance wherever you see him.

One of the best ever... Clancy doesn't get enough credit... This man also has a huge heart... His roles in Highlander and Starship Troopers will live on forever.
He gets plenty of credit - he just plays in a lot of films and TV media that don't get much credit.
The closest he's probably come to oscar bait is Shawshank Redemption - but for all his amazing presence as Byron Hadley his total dialogue length in the film is too limited compared to Robbins and Freeman so he didn't get a look in.
The same can be said of Kurgan - amazing presence and performance, but very limited screen time and dialogue.
Of all his performances I would say that the only one he could really compete with based on dialogue/screen time is the role of Brother Justin in Carnivale - but sadly the oscars doesn't cover TV.
Clancy Brown always turns in a solid performance. His work as the Kurgan was so good, it made me question if it was really the same actor as other movies I'd seen him in.

It’s gratifying after all these years to finally hear why in the hell a Scot was playing a Spaniard and a Belgian played a Scot (with no attempt at the accent whatsoever). I love that movie.
That’s one of the coolest things about this movie. A French as a Scotch, and a Scotch as a Spaniard/Egyptian.

Shawshank Redemption isn't the cinematic masterpiece it is without Clancy Brown. Then, he went on to become Mr. Krabs.

He and the creepy convicts who bullied Andy were the darker elements of the movie, and it would have been a much darker experience all over were it not for Red and his friendship with Andy.

I love Clancy Brown. What a great actor. He like Lance Henrikson can raise the bar on an otherwise low budget affair. The Kurgan has gone down as one of the great villains in cinema. Long may you continue and long may we enjoy your performances. I salute you sir. Class, sheer class.

Didn't realize the Clancy Brown became a top-tier voice actor for so many animated series. Dude has like 300 voice credits!
I still can't believe he's Mr. Krabs from Spongebob.
An interesting fact about Sean Connery is he played an ancient Egyptian in this movie yet still had his Scottish accent, he played so many different characters from other nations in his movies and yet still had his Scottish accent, In the movie the Hunt for Red October he played a soviet captain of a submarine and still had his Scottish accent, he never once got criticism over this as it was part of the sean Connery package part of his charm, I can't think of any other actor that gets away with not putting on accents for movies roles, especially today.
If I remember correctly, they make a joke about this in the movie. Like, Ramirez is Egyptian, lived in Japan, married a Japanese woman, went to Spain when she died, and then finally Scotland where he was affectionately called a Spanish Peacock.
But the actual joke was when Connor was at the police station, and one of the detectives says, "That's a funny accent you got there. Where're you from," to which Conner replied, "Lots of different places." The joke has so many layers to it, because like Ramirez, Connor traveled around a lot. That and Christopher Lambert's French accent was bleeding through, despite him playing a Scotsman.

I still remember Clancy as VIKING in Bad Boys and Weasel in Thunder Alley. I actually started going to movies just because he was in the movies way back at the beginning of his career.
Always liked the guy and the roles he played. Was a real shame though that he was forced to shoot himself in the head three times after that argument with Buster Scruggs.
Clancy is a dominating presence in any role he plays! Definitely one of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen!

The Kurgan was a major character and very iconic. Imagine going through all that choreography and having to shave your head, and then not getting paid. I can't fathom how Hollywood works. Anyway, glad you took the job, Mr Brown. You were amazing!

With very much due respect to the other actors in this movie, Clancy’s magnetism and screen presence absolutely made this movie.
The way I see it, to offset the good guys who are in top form, you need an actor that can play larger than life bad guy to offset or balance things.
I just watched it again and it’s still fun to watch and does not get old.
Oh man, the memories... I saw Highlander for the first time on a pirated VHS in elementary school at a "movie club" and it left a huge impression (I was also a bit young - 11 or 12). I had trouble understanding what was happening initially, but the action was great and Clancy was just a great villain. I love this behind-the-scenes anecdote! You guys just keep knocking them out of the park!
Clancy Brown was outstanding as the Kurgan, in the epic Highlander movie but the real villains were the one's who didn't pay Clancy what he was worth towards the end result of this movie.

They got Queen to do the sound track as well.
Which is what really propelled that movie into the stratosphere. The movie will always be great, but adding Queen's music made it really special. We should all be thankful the director was experienced with music videos because it was probably his connections that got Queen on board.

Yes. I was disappointed that Princes Of The Universe was not included in Queen's best-of album.
@@jeffthompson9622 Princes of the Universe never could have been in Queen's Greatest Hits because the album was released in 1980, six years before Highlander was made. But it was in Greatest Hits III.
A lot of that credit goes to Queen themselves. According to RM, they were only asked to do one song for the soundtrack, but they looked at the movie and said they wanted to do the whole thing. Naturally, nobody in their right mind would turn that down.
Clancy Brown is a fucking treasure... he's alway just showed up in things i love, just making them even better. awesome actor, does not get the credit he absolutely deserves. he's done so many iconic roles over the years.
Had that movie been made now, Clancy Brown would have gotten an Academy Award nod. He deserves it.
My favorite role Clancy Brown ever did was Brother Justin Crowe on hbo’s CARNIVALE. Which was very sadly cancelled after 2 seasons. He played the “anti-christ” character so beautifully well.👍

I'm so glad I'm not the only who still thinks about Carnival . He was amazing in it . First season had me always on the fence whether he was a good guy or bad guy till the later part of the season

I still can't get over the fact that Clancy Brown played Mr. Krabbs (my favorite SpongeBob character) AND my favorite version of Lex Luthor in animation!
I also realize that the first time I saw him act was in "The Bride," the remake of "Bride of Frankenstein" that also starred Sting and Jennifer Beals!
Very few actors can portray despicable bad guys that you can't help but like. Clancy Brown is one of those actors. His role in "Cowboys and Aliens" is my favorite.
If I see Clancy Brown on something, I watch it. Cause I know that just for his performance, it'll worth the watch. Love him since Highlander.

Sean Connery had great foresight to see himself as Ramirez! Both his and Clancy Brown’s Kurgan were what made that film great! Clancy doing Shawshank Redemption later had the same effect in that movie that he had in Highlander. Such memorable performances!

I was a young service man at the time and I LOVED the Highlander. Got all the merchandise that I could find over the years. The soundtrack is my favorite Queen album. A few years later when I became a dad, I named my son Connor with two O's since we already had a Scottish last name. As a die hard fan, I cannot fathom this movie without Clancy Brown nor could I have imagined him being screwed over like this having played one of the greatest screen villains ever.

After Highlander, Clancy Brown became a touchstone for me, if I saw he was in a movie , I watched it.
I loved Highlander and then Earth 2 was cool (but actually it sucks)

Clancy definitely should've got a lot more money. He's a great chraracter, imposing and scary, but with a sense of humour as well.
In Hollywood, sports, and almost anything in life, you get paid for what you have done in the past.
Playing the Kurgan boosted his worth immensely, and probably got him some of his highest-paying roles because his talent got fully exposed.

One of the best bad guy actors in recent times. Along with the Kurgan I especially loved his performance in Deadly Pursuit with Sidney Poitier. Legend.
First movie I saw him in, and I am glad it was, since in the beginning it was a mystery which of the hikers was the bad guy. Had I seen highlander first, I probably would have thought it would have been him.
@@GoldenCroc Yeah watching now he seems the most likely suspect but at the time it wasn't as abvious, especially as one of the other hikers was Scorpio from Dirty Harry! The filmmakers did a good job of teasing all of the others as potential suspects which was good.

I loved seeing Clancy recently in PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN. He was perfectly cast and gave a sensitive and nuanced performance.
Widen's career was interesting. He was working as an EMT after college and witnessed a backdraft at a fire scene and, you guessed it, turned that experience into the script for BACKDRAFT. Yeah, the Prophecy was interesting. I liked it. The only bad part was that they chose some Air Force General as the source of evil that they needed. That was weak. Of all the brutal dictators, serial killers, etc. In the world to choose from, they choose a guy from the Air Force?

Maybe some satisfaction that everyone who came across him after seeing the movie did a quiet double take and had a slight flight response.

Highlander has one of the greatest opening shots in cinema. The pan shot around MSG is breathtaking.
That shot established the whole movie in 20sec ! 👍
He was in one episode of Star Trek Enterprise and he was as good and imposing as he always is! A great guy! Awesome presence! He always becomes the star of whatever project he is in!
Can't imagine anyone better for playing the Kurgan than Clancy. He is one of my favorite villains of all movies. And I've loved Clancy in literally EVERY movie he showed up that I've seen. Real Legend in my eyes.
He made that film and the music score was fantastic by Queen.
I have a soft spot for actors who played iconic villains in the 80's, I always loved the job they did and thought they deserved more then to be seen as the bad guy, which is why I love it when they get to play a good guy. From Clancy Brown to Michael Ironside to Alexander Godunov.

This guy's been around forever and is a real actor, capable of far more range than most of Hollywood's usual list of "super stars!"
He's one of those unsung actors that is brilliant in what he does seen him in many styles of roles and wow !!!

My favourite part of the Highlander(after seeing it 100 times) was the tracking shot of the Kurgan walking through that dirty motel, surveying all the derelicts, drunks and druggies as he passes by each one. He’s constantly on the prowl and absorbs everything. It’s the small things such as that, which makes low budget films like The Highlander instant cult classics!

First off, Highlander, my favourite film of all time (check the username), I remember seeing it at the cinema, I was 10 years old, way too young to actually get to see it (legally), an older friend of mine bought a ticket to see it, walked inside, and, when nobody was looking, opened the fire escape for me to get in to see it for free
Secondly, anybody else realised this is Lex Luthor having a conversation with Lex Luthor?
Try watching the Justice League cartoon, Michael voices the Flash, and there's a episode where they switch bodies.

I've been a fan of Clancy Brown since the first time he hit the screen in Highlander. I agree with Creepy847 how underrated Clancy is. If I see his name on something I'm going to watch it. Not ifs ands or buts about it, because I know he's going to bring something special to the story. It's purely horrible his treatment on Highlander. He MADE that film. Thank you, Clancy, for your incredible talent.
It is often said that a film is not made by its protagonist but rather by its antagonist. If that is true (and I believe it often is), then Clancy Brown's turn as Kurgan hugely contributed to the success of Highlander.
Hulk Hogan was only great because of Roddy Piper.
Much like Alan Rickman's Roles in Die hard and Robin Hood...there something wonderful about a great scenery chewing villainous performance from a top tier character actor
