  • The symptoms of tinnitus can vary significantly from person to person. You may hear phantom sounds in one ear, in both ears, and in your head. The phantom sound may ring, buzz, roar, whistle, hum, click, hiss, or squeal. The sound may be soft or loud and may be low or high pitched. It may come and go or be present all the time. Sometimes, moving your head, neck, or eyes, or touching certain parts of your body may produce tinnitus symptoms or temporarily change the quality of the perceived sound.

      I
The roaring in my ears has gone down. Not gone , mind you, and it is still loud, but not "roaring" 24-7 like it was. Been taking gaba every morning for nine months. Some days, it does flare back up for 1-2 days. I have noticed that if I eat out, which we seldom do, and have a spicy, salty meal, the sounds in my head are worse. the next morning. I have high blood pressure, but it's under control. A very salty meal seems to make the noise worse. Being outside on a windy day makes it worse. I wear ear protection when doing any noisey work, even at wedding receptions, the movies , anywhere it's loud, because the following day my head is roaring for a day or two. Here's are a couple important points : Teach yourself to live with it. It's the cross you're going to carry and don't let it destroy your life. I've lived with this since the mid70's. There's lots of people that are blind, deaf, amputated legs. . . The list is endless. Count your blessings, always be thankful for what you do have, for they are many. I pray every day and thank God every day. It is what it is and we can handle whatever is thrown at us. . . Like they say, "It's all in your head."

I've had constant tinnitus for 30 years since an ill-fated journey through Java. It was horrible the first years, after that I learnt the best trick to deal with it and since I've been ok with it. The trick is to learn to ignore it, keep your focus as far away from it as possible, then keep stress levels to a minimum. Not perfect of course as it doesn't go away and then the hearing is certainly compromised, but the goal is to stop feeling hopeless and get over it as much as you possibly can. Good luck all.

Warning on GABA overdose! While I've seen the 750mg twice a day protocol elsewhere, so it's not exclusive to this video, the dose may be too high for some as I experienced myself. I started with 750mg twice daily right away and initially felt noticeable improvement in my sleep quality. However, after over a week I started experiencing worrisome symptoms like shortness of breath, tingling in my head, drowsiness, lightheadedness, like about to faint. This naturally caused great anxiety and worry, especially as the intensity of these symptoms was progressing every day. Before going to the doctor for an urgent checkup , I instinctively Googled GABA overdose symptoms and immediately recognized all of them. I stopped taking GABA immediately and all of these symptoms vanished within a few days. My doctor acknowledged GABA, but recommended melatonin for my insomnia, which funny enough caused the worst onset of insomnia I have ever had, but that's a different story. I'm keen on trying GABA again for sleep but am very hesitant of the side effects and unsure of safe lower dose. Any recommendations are welcome in the comments. I did not experience any improvement with my tinnitus, most likely due to my experiment cut short by the side effects. Hope this may warn or educate others.

Hey Doc, this is intereresting, especially in light of the fact that many people with tinnitus also have Visual Snow Syndrome. Visual Snow seems a lot like a visual analog of tinnitus. Have you thought about what exitatory neurotransmitter(s) might play a role creating visual static, and then what might help downregulate that/those neurotransmitter(s) ? Or is the vision/brain visual disturbance something more complicated.

I’ve had tinnitus all my life, I assumed it was normal and everyone heard ’this way’. I was almost 40 when I found out it was a disorder. And it only gets worse the older I get.
But since I had italways, I am sort of used to it. It is only the last couple of years it is really getting a big burden. I’m 69 now and I have more hearing/ear problems. And as a last - very last - attempt I’m going to the country’s top 6 star hospital with my cry for help.
And it’s not even for the tinnitus, I’ve given up hope for relief there, but for another ear problem that is driving me crazy.

As a sufferer of tinnitus all my life, 50years in and tried everything. I may try this. But the only time I stopped it was by accident.
I was hedge cutting with a long reach hedge trimmer and held it whilst running against the side of my head...... and tinnitus stopped for that brief period.
I have tried everything under the sun tbh, nothing works.
I have spent ££££'s to just lower it to the point I can hear in my left ear, but nope.
I'm hard of hearing in both ears now, so I just avoid conversations and gatherings and it suits my introvert self perfectly 👍
It's only in the last 8years I can't converse on the phone so ask my client's to text as I can't hear jack, just learned to live around it. But I do hope this works for some.

I feel your suffering. I have not had success in eliminating my tinnitus. My experience is this: It gets a little worse with age, and it also gets worse with poor health. Also I have progressed past the point where "white noise" helps. In the early stages, a fan on medium or low, would prevent me from hearing the tinnitus. Now though sadly, any kind of white noise makes my tinnitus louder, and more annoying. I've grown used to it. Also, "misery loves company", and my tinnitus loves it when I'm feeling physically "poor" in other ways. When I'm eating right, and exercising, walking everyday, and losing weight, my tinnitus just seems to "matter less". I will try the head massage thing, if it helps a little great. If it does nothing, no harm in trying. I notice that when I do the massage thing, it does make my tinnitus change in loudness and pitch. This seems to confirm that something is mechanically janky in my ears that's causing it. One other thing that seems to work for a little while is "absolute silence". If I sleep/rest/relax in absolute silence, the tinnitus is quite noticeable, but then my brain seems to learn to ignore it a bit and it gets quieter after a couple of hours. Then when I leave the quiet room, I have a bit of peace for an hour or two. I try and sleep in silence now.

Anything that calms the nervous system can also go too far in that direction. In doing so, for instance, there could be a lack of energy, slower digestion, depression. This can also happen when people self prescribe Ashwaghanda. It can suppress cortisol, but when taken too long or at too high a dose, there may be fatigue and depression as well. Medicine is a very individual experience and in this new age of information, it’s hard to stay in front of all the things people are told they need…be it turmeric, cinnamon, ashwaghanda, ginger…older more seasoned systems of medicine are very careful to say “everyone” needs any one thing, with the exception of water, breath and to chew more

I've always been told that there's nothing that can be done to fix tinnitus. I'm getting emotional at the thought of it actually going away. Definitely going to give this a try. Thanks, Doctor!
Edit: No improvement yet folks (As of July 26)
Edit January 2024: I discontinued GABA after several months (Video recommended 2 months, I gave it at least double that). It didn't work. I appreciate everyone's input. Has anyone experienced relief after eliminating aspartame?

Progressing tinnitus? Go on a low-carb or ketogenic diet for a week or two. If you notice any reduction, there you go. Keep doing it. You shouldn't have to live your life with tinnitus.

I am about two weeks into an attempt to ease my tinnitus with GABA (750 mg twice a day). My tinnitus has consistently been in the 5800-6000 Hz range for a long time, but the GABA has dropped it by about 1000 Hz. I'm not sure what to make of it, but I will continue down this path. No other supplement has had this sort of effect. Thank you Dr Mandell, keep up the positivity!

@@KayGx Life threw a curve ball at me last weekend, so my stress and sleep have both been a mess lately... Both are triggers for my tinnitus. That said, my tinnitus isn't as bad as it typically would be. I think the GABA is helping in that regard. It isn't going to be a cure, but it will be a good tool to help me manage spikes.

I’ve tried GABA, and it’s very stimulating and did not like the way it made me feel. I am a 61 yr old female who has high blood pressure as well as PAT. I take inderol 10 mg. I’ve had Tinnitus for several yrs but have noticed it getting worse since a spinal injury and several major back surgeries. Recovering from spinal cord surgery to remove a calcifies Synovial Cyst at T 11-10. I’m very Leary of trying GABA again, but will pray about it and see what I’m to do. Anything to stop the sharp buzzing ( which is worse in my right ear ). Sometimes it gets so very loud, especially when my pain level is really high. Thank you.

Sometimes it can also be undetected ear infections and it can be inside some of the crevices in the ear. Diluted apple cider vinegar and water in a swab applied inside the ear several times a day helped to reduce my infections. Also nasal wash with can help to flush out the Eustachian tube over a period of time will also help.
