  • There have been a lot of bad laptops, but how about the worst ever?
Over the last 25 years there have been thousands of computers released and while very few have been excellent almost all PCs have been decent. Over the years there have been a few exceptions, whether being too huge for a notebook, too slow or flat out unusable here is my top 5 worst laptops ever!

I currently have a Dell Latitude D610 from 2005. If I am on it for more than 20 minutes, it overheats and melted plastic starts pouring from the air vent. However it hasn't caught fire yet, so there is still hope.

Gabe Newell I would, but said plastic has effectively welded the thing together, thus preventing all attempts at repairs. I might just smash it with a hammer tbh to put it out of its misery.

My father's friend's friend works for HP. A fair few years ago, they were getting rid of old prototype laptops, and one found its way to me. This thing had a 1.3Ghz CPU and 1GB of RAM, which was fine for what I was doing on it. However, this being a prototype, meant it didn't work quite right. If you left it idling for 5 or so minutes, the PSU went crazy, pushed the fans to 100% and shut the laptop down. You couldn't use the power button to fix it, so you had to pull the battery out. It also had a 1 pixel wide green line running straight down the centre of the monitor.
    Those were the days.

Pavan Nihal Chelikani Do you enjoy the single USB port, and the processor that's slow even for a smartphone? Or maybe the screen that has a resolution that's bad for a 4 inch device, let alone a laptop? Or maybe the ridiculously high price tag for a glorified chromebook?
I also do programming on my Yoga 900, which I dual-boot Windows 10 and Linux. Programming has never been a problem on Windows devices when you can dual boot.
The only thing people enjoy about the MacBook Air is that apple logo.

The Transnote was actually a nice concept. A subcompact laptop like the X21 with a digitizer that configures directly into the machine without any sort of serial or network stupidity is a good idea. It's really large when all folded out, but folded in it's about the same size as a comparable laptop and book for writing notes. ThinkPads were way ahead of their time.

My first laptop was a Dell LatitudeD610. Ran good for like 1 month, then stopped working. Complete failure because someone deleted my system32 file. Sat on my desk for moths until my best friend let me borrow her windows 7 boot disk. Finally started working. Played the sims 2 on it for a while. Got bored. Played with my ipad mini. Finally cousin breaks his laptop by downloading porn. He says a BIOS update failed, but I know he was downloading porn. That and had no virus protection. He told me if I could get it fixed, I could have it. I made a recovery usb from my sisters laptop and fixed it in one day. Needless to say, I got me a brand spanking new HP 15 Laptop for the price of just installing a new OS.

I can appreciate the effort here, but there's a few things I'd like to point out. I've been repairing laptops since the mid-1990s, and in context, the Macintosh portable wasn't bad at all. Remember, it was 1989; every manufacturer (and there were a LOT of them) had their own idea on what a laptop should look like, how they should function, etc. The Mac Portable wasn't Apple's most expensive laptop; the first G3-based PowerBook (Kanga) cost about $7,000 fully spec'd. What makes the Macintosh Portable bad, in my opinion (and I've owned three of them), was a poorly designed internal power supply that REQUIRED a functioning (semi-charged) battery to even TURN ON! That, and the highly customized bus-powered Conner hard drive that was IMPOSSIBLE to replace with anything other than the original make/model drive kinda sucked. You're spot-on with the Minisport; that floppy drive really hurt the unit's functionality. I'd also like to add another contender; the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad W700DS. Look it up and you'll see why!

That would be your fault, not the computer. If you don't protect the OS properly with a virus scanner and firewall, and go to shady websites (or even some reputable sites), that is what happens. The hardware doesn't influence the ability to get viruses and malware.

Can't recall the actual name, but I tried looking for drivers when I first got it and it was hard to track down the model, and when I finally found it there wasn't much information. Waste of money. If it was a Dell, I'd probably have died a long time ago from it bursting into flames while watching movies on it in bed, lol.

I had a laptop which, although it didn't explode, it did catch fire and could have killed me. It was a friend's Benq brand laptop from 2005 (wouldn't be surprised if it used dell battery or parts). I was reinstalling windows for this friend and, as it was late at night, I left the laptop plugged in while windows installed, while I had a sleep on the nearby lounge. Sometime later, I woke up to a room FULL of toxic black smoke and the laptop sparking and flames out the back. It must have been the 'crackling' sound which woke me up, luckily. I grabbed it and chucked the whole thing out into the back yard, then ran around opening up all the windows in the house. My wife and kids were asleep at the other end of the house and didn't realise anything happened until the next day. The amazing thing is, the next day I went and grabbed the charred remains from the backyard, ripped the remnants of the battery out, plugged it into a charger, and the thing powered up! In fact, it still works to this day (I kept it for some reason).
