      You kid but PTSD isn’t just something you get from a war or being held hostage, it’s likely Michael may experience some symptoms of it from his childhood. It doesn’t sound like it was a mentally healthy situation for him to grow up around.
      It’s great that he got himself out and has a “family” of good friends around him now. Ryan & Tom are keeping his mind in the podcast by not letting him spiral 🌀 too much into his childhood which is what friends do for us sometimes.

    The thing with Brisby Crosby was that they wanted her to have a bigger role after Swann's death. They even talked about her being the big bad. Among other things, they also wanted her to announce Dr. Swann's death in Smallville, but she didn't want to because she thought it was distasteful. So, she quit the series, and the writers had to scrap a lot of her storylines, which is why they killed her off-screen since the actress didn't even return for her death scene.

      Also Michael: "I think I was alone watching TV" *Tom burst in laughter*
      But in all seriousness, I think that's a very good reaction, at least for me. people don't want negative emotions from others, like pitty, when they share stories, they just want to share. if they get the wrong reaction to what they say they might consider twice if it's worth sharing, if people react as if it's not a big deal, like Tom did, I would feel more comfortable. they're not his psychologists, they're his friends and they're having fun in the middle of a podcast. but that's me.

    • @user-Balthazar669
      @user-Balthazar669 Před 16 dny +12

      Yeah, I think they know that if they indulge Michael in his spiraling 🌀 into his crappy childhood that he won’t come out of it very quickly.
      They try to keep the story moving and his mood positive. It’s very sad how his family treated him and no doubt he has done more than anyone would have ever expected from him and that’s what he has to hang onto, he’s the underdog that rose to the top and now he’s living a life he should be proud to have created for himself. It’s like the Rocky storyline isn’t it?…

      I'm a therapist. Even with the patient, it is important to welcome and validate the pain, but not to overestimate it. It would give the impression that the situation was greater than the person's ability to respond to it. We are who we are because of our history and what we have made of it. Tom and Ryan seem to really like who Michael is today!

    Saying S4 plot was all about the crystals, to me is no different than saying S2 was all about the spaceship. after re-watch, pretty sure S4 main plot was not about getting Clark to the FoS, it was about getting Clark to adulthood. it was about growing up and learning what true responsibility means, and self-accountability. In that respect, there really weren't any "filler" eps cuz every ep got Clark one step closer. it's fitting that graduation will be in the season finale.

    • @Costas22
      @Costas22 Před 16 dny +2

      Clark's journey to adulthood was never filler. Bringing in Lois' entire family was, LOL.
      And yeah, the Stones was the overarching season arc. It began in the premiere when Clark found the first stone and it culminated when he formed the FOS in Commencement. Not to mention that the FOS forming IS part of Clark's adulthood because that's when he begins his training (in the comics and movies anyway). The fact that they repeatedly ignored the storyline for secondary stuff doesn't change that.

    • @asyouwish3636
      @asyouwish3636 Před 16 dny +4

      @Costas22 my point is that the stones were really a plot device, not the narrative spine. if you look at it from that POV then 90% of the "filler" eps for S4 become more important, instead of just stepping stones to the, what - like hour of screen time that the stones got this whole season

    • @asyouwish3636
      @asyouwish3636 Před 16 dny +2

      @@Costas22there's lots of execution problems in this season. The Lucy ep, if done better, wouldn't have felt like filler, for example. the Spell ep was ridiculous because of how it was edited not for the idea of it, since magic is a part of Superman Canon and it's been done well in tons of other shows. so mostly the filler eps just needed a better budget and they wouldn't have been filler lol

    • @jeffh06
      @jeffh06 Před 15 dny

      The crystal story seemed unimportant of a competitive treasure hunt , I mean why with the 3 relics?😑 when making to one💎 unlike Superman 1978 movie when had the crystal with has to the FOS was from his crib ship without having to go find them spread out🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @asyouwish3636
      @asyouwish3636 Před 15 dny +2

      @jeffh06 well, speculation (confirmed by Al) was that they had intended the season to go different than how it ended up. (as evidenced by the several flip-flop issues w Jason/Lana relationship, and making him a hidden villain towards the end etc) I think we all believed that the crystals were gonna be the main plot point cuz the S4 opener heavily focused on them, like it was a big deal in that ep! as well as a few early eps. but now I see the crystals were just a means to an end and not the actual season plot arc (sorry Costas, I know you think they were the main story!)
      but look at how they rushed all the loose ends from the S4 finale! ie: another super-traumatic event happens w Lana and they basically one-line-toss it away. I think it's just one of those things that got detoured cuz that's how network shows work sometimes 🤷‍♀️

      That is something that I find funny on the one hand, but I also accept it while watching Smallville (and other shows where these type of things happen), on the other hand. Mere humans (ie, no powers, etc.) tend to get thrown around/ knocked out, and only sometimes these humans end up being seriously injured, etc. It does not bother me, because I accept it as a part of the story-telling/ special effects, but I do allow myself to have a good laugh, at the same time :)

He looked still dejected there too. Its great to see when Tom can shift a variety of conflicting emotions on his face within a few seconds. I think Clark really believes at this point that Lois would never be romantically interested in him, and we can see those small moments of hurt on his face like here, and in the Lucy episode. He doesn't realize yet that Lois hides her surfacing feelings for him behind sarcasm and denial. Of course, they're both in denial at this time really. Just sometimes their expressions can give the truth away.

      @lilacmist04 YESSS and there's so many tiny almost subliminal details over the years, and even not so tiny like when Lois was the first person he "leapt over a tall building in single bound" with! lol... i mean like he was on Red K for 3 months, as a 16yr old on his own in a big city, w tons of money and a hot girl every night and still chose not to have sex (which proves Red K isn't just a simple drug effect) and yet when on Red K w Lois he chose to reveal his abilities. (sidenote, his not having sex back then I'm convinced is an example of my theory that the writers would create a random plot point and then write whole episodes or storylines to fit it in, ie: they really wanted Clark/Lana to lose virginity to each other, which is why Clark conveniently didn't have sex all the times he was on Red K, not to mention Lana living w an older man for months. etc)
      also, YESSS Tom's ability to speak volumes w just a look is fantastic! there's a really quick scene in S9 Pandora where He and Lois have an entire conversation w out speaking a word, just a 2 second look. love it!

      Yeah to be honest I think she was probably a) in grief herself and I won't blame her for any opinions she had about the whole event, and b) overestimating any promotional relevance there would've been about Margot Kidder talking about a character named Dr. Swann. Getting Christopher Reeve on the show in the FIRST place was the "exploitation" of his stature, which he was happy to do; killing off his character when he died is just naturally how TV writing works (and so is having the one other character closely associated with him be the one to bring the news)

I was basically growing up with Clark, I was around the same age so i just connected with it and it was an escape and safe space to just be myself. Someone usually comments that they don’t know why Michael doesn’t know what happened in the episode if he’s recently watched it, it’s because he’s probably doing two other things at the same time. Yeah playing a caller over Ryan in this episode was a real bad one. But this is a pretty common issue for him. It's partly getting really impatient to move on because he can't stand the campy parts of the show, and partly focus issues and trying to keep the podcast on pace. He doesn't seem to realize you can be pretty damn critical of a show and still let yourself enjoy parts of it, kind of like I'm doing with his behavior on the podcast right now.

    Interesting thing of note: with the prom centric episode, it should have been mentioned that before this bit part on Smallville, Kandyse McClure (who plays a minion of Dawn) had the role of Sue Snell in Bryan Fuller’s tv production of Stephen King’s Carrie (that was a stealth tv pilot that didn’t get picked up). And also, Kandyse is currently starring on Netflix’s Virgin River with Annette O’Toole!

    "mixing magic and super powers" is exactly what kind of made the DC and even MCU cool in my opinion. Obviously we get magic later on with Zatana and in a way you could say season 4 was a precursor to all of that.

    My class didn't have a high school prom, we saved money and spent 3 days having a party at a student's parents' farm, we invited families, teachers, boyfriends, it was really good! Barbecue, football game! At night people were telling horror stories! My time in high school was very perfect, our class is still friends today!

      @jerodast Před 10 dny +1

      Well gooood for you :P
      It's funny when the guys complain about not having recurring high school characters, because Clark doesn't really seem to be close to his high school class at all - he spends way over half his time doing distinctly not high school things haha. It's not a huge surprise we wouldn't have seen Dawn before other than like, in the stands at a football game or something.

    I agree w Tom, it did feel like the editing was off. the Lex/Jason sequence not only felt like it belonged in a diff ep, but even the look/cinematography was different. could be a Directorial decision, or more likely was actually out of place cuz of episode timing

    Can we also talk about how Martha Kent was singing Ashlee Simpson's song Lala: "..I'll be your french maid when I meet you at the door. I'm like an alley cat; drink the milk up, I want more" is hilarious and disturbing! What a song choice! Didn't Billy die in season 3 when that ancient cheerleader sucked up his youth (Redux)? Why did Dawn kill herself though? That would mean she would always be swapping and never be able to touch anyone, forever! Tbh Smallville started in 2001 and I was in high school so I very much grew up with Clark!

    • @inTWelligent
      @inTWelligent Před 15 dny +1

      Yeah Billy Durden was definitely the same actor who died at the bottom of the pool from having his youth sucked from him after kissing Chrissy (in Season 2 "Redux")
      I also always wondered why Dawn killed her own body in the hospital! Messed up...

      @@inTWelligent Thank you! I thought I was confusing him. We don't see him again though so I guess the electricity was the final nail in the coffin lol!
      I guess we could chalk it up to Dawn being impulsive and not too smart but it felt like an obviously dumb move while watching

    • @jerodast
      @jerodast Před 10 dny

      Yeah I don't think Dawn thought through the implications of not being able to touch anyone again. But I understand the shallow/crazy impulse; she can "be" anyone now so why be a *gasp* horribly scarred person. Hell, she can keep hopping into each new senior class's prom queen every year for eternity!
      If you want to pretend this episode had any moral statement attached to it, it's that Dawn was extremely shallow and willing to use people, and this is what comes of those traits.

    • @MShaiqable
      @MShaiqable Před 9 dny

      @@jerodast Oh yeah! I forgot about the scarred part! You're right. Moral was she was shallow and vapid and karma got her in the end

    I liked this episode. I know it was high school centered but I still think there was some progress to the storyline.
    Annete playing Dawn was so hilarious, she really committed to the scene.
    I love Lifehouse songs, I listen to them to this day.
    I will give this episode 🌹 and a half.

    When Tom mentioned the scary body-jumping movie, aside from Fallen, I thought it might be Shocker (Wes Craven, 1989) or The First Power (Robert Resnikoff, 1990).
