ONYX (S4E17) Meet the Villain of the Story, Keeping the Mask & Tapping Into Evil #smallville #talkville #season4 #onyx - Zábava
"You were right about me all along, Mr Kent. I am the villain of the story".
Fucking epic.
Imo Michael Rosenbaum is the Best Lex Luthor ever
My favorite line in season 4.
Wasn't it Mrs. Kent not Mr. Kent?
Just Legendary🌹🌹🌹💙❤️🤘
Not epic, iconic, franchise defining, just everything
“I am the villain of the story.” ❤ One of the best episodes of Smallville!! All the awards and roses to Michael Rosenbaum!! ❤️❤️❤️
And so great that he plays Evil Lex w such nuance in the beginning! I love that our first experience w him, we don't fully know if we're dealing w the good or evil Lex yet at that point 👏
Just Legendary! 🎆👏
its a Great line lex/mic used i agree with you on that
That line was the culmination Michael owned it it's my favorite line from the whole series.
Lionel's "We're Luthors" line is criminally underrated.
brilliant end
Even topped the I'm the villain line somehow...
I love how Tom is now a fan of the show.
I met him at Mega Con in 2019 and asked him what his favorite season of the show was. He said “I don’t remember it much, but probably season 1.” It’s neat to see that change now.
How amazing the "I am the villain of the story" is… THIS "You can’t kill me! I drive you! I give you life meaning! I’m your soul, you weak, pathetic little man!" = WOW. Felt it in my bones!!
I was hoping this would be one of Ryan’s favorite scenes! It was just way too epic! So Powerful!!
Yeah, where is this sort of thing in modern shows? Too interested in...other things shall we say.
epic
Legendary line from a Legendary Episode 💙❤️🤘
I agree... one of favorite lines in the whole series.
".. you can't kill me! I drive you! .. i`m your soul you weak pathetic little man!.. i am the real Lex Luthor!" epic moment too
Of my favorite line of the show
That's right, a lot of memorable quotes in this episode.
I know there are a few bomb episodes this season but Run, Transference and Onyx in one season is amazing
ryan's favorite scene for spirit needs to be when clark says "crown's mine bitch." I still laugh when I think about that line till this day.
hahahahahhaha!!! Him and Annette's performances in that episode
Still my favorite out of character Clark line. 😂
Yes that was pretty awesome to see that come out of Clark
I love spirit, so hilarious 🤣🤣 genius!
It's the best line of the series haha. No other line has entertained me more :P
Definitely one of my favorite episodes. That "I am the villain of the story" line gives me chills, every time.
You can tell Chase is a real Smallville fan. I'm glad you're bringing on Patrons for this.
Absolutely, I am!
@@chasemcgee8501 I loved seeing your Superman collection. Stay awesome, Chase!
Love the ending: "We're Luthors, we're Luthors" and the mild smile on Lex's face.
11:02 - "Wouldn't it have been fun for Bad Lex to meet up with Red K Clark?" Fanficiton writers everywhere are taking to their keyboards as we speak
I hope so
I feel like they technically act on this potential with the season 10 episodes Luthor and Kent. Clark is still super and from Krypton, but was found by Lionel in the field rather than Jonathan and Martha. And Lionel ended up turning him into a bad person. He didn’t even need Red K. He had Lionel’s parental upbringing
This episode is Rosie at his finest. What a performance! Top 5 episodes of the entire series.
"I AM THE VILLAIN OF THE STORY!!!"
I've been waiting for this episode! I love that quote! It needs to be on merch.
Next week Ryan’s favorite scene has to be teenager Martha.
Annette was the MVP for sure.
Oh, yeah. It's one of the funniest scenes in the whole show.
Don’t forget “The crown’s mine, bitch!” I love that scene.
we will see
I think clark taking the crown off of Chloe
@@kathybeardmore8942 Great choice. Lots of cheese to choose from here.
Onyx was a turning point for Lex. Great performance as always, by Michael. He is Lex. Nobody comes close.
Michael your acting was truly incredible in this episode.
Don't know if Bryce's trivia will cover it, but this is the 3rd episode in a row where Lex gets pistol whipped. LOL.
Oh and there's a deleted scene in the DVD of evil Lex killing the security guard that Chloe finds.
new counter!
I find it interesting that Tom's favorite classic literature is The Count of Monte Cristo, given the nature of Onyx having a direct correlation to The Man in the Iron Mask. Both books were penned by Alexandre Dumas.
“You we’re right about me all along, Mr. Kent… I am the villain of the story” has gotta be a top 5 or top 10 quote from the series. Easily one of my fave eps of the season and series overall.
The ONLY Lex saying one of the most iconic lines ever ❤️❤️🙏.
Victory The Legendary Quote 🎇🤘
"'Dad, you have no idea what I'm capable of.'
-Lex Luthor"
-Dwight Schrute
33:56 That was me, who gave that light to you Tom at Indianapolis Comic Con. It's a lithophane that I designed and made myself on my 3D printer. I already made one for Michael though. Just haven't seen him again yet.
So cool man! Do you happen to sell some of them ?
@@IamBatman.1939 I designed it, and had a guy help me build out the 3d model. So its basically a 3D print with 1 LED light strip on the inside. I will see about publishing the files online so people can download them cheap and build them their selves. I might end up building some extra ones and selling them. If I do, Ill come back and let you know.
"You were right about me all along, Mr. Kent, I am the villain of the story" best fkn line EVER and Michael you CRUSHED it ❤❤
Top 5 episode from season 4.
1 - Commencement
2 - Transference
3 - Onyx
4 - Run
5 - Crusade
excellent picks, all great episodes
Commencement is my favorite episode of the show and one of my favorite episodes of all time
I also like how self aware or at least aknowledge dark lex is. One of my favorite lines is “I am the villain of this story!”
One of my absolute favorite episodes in ten seasons. All of the comic references blew my mind at the time (the kryptonite ring, black k, etc etc) and of course: "I am the villain of the story". Years later, I will always remember that line. Wonderful acting from everyone all around.
This was the first episode of Smallville I ever watched back in the day. When Lex dropped the lab on Clark, and Clark stood up from the rubble like it was nothing --- that moment will always stick with me. Great episode.
Love how Lex brought Lionel back to the Dark side
1:03:02 i like when Bryce gets to speak during the talkville podcasts even if he isn't on camera honestly
With Lana saying she’s also sorry, I read that as this: Lana knows that it wasn’t “Lex”, but she realizes it was a part of Lex that was still acting out what he wants. He’s was uninhibited, and she’s sorry that she doesn’t view him as anything other than a friend. Even when Lana and Lex get together in the future, I never got the impression that Lana actually loved Lex.
One of, if not the best Lex episodes. We finally got the iconic line. But the one thing that stood out to me was the final scene with Lex and Lionel. The line "A man can't deny his true nature, can he Lex?" and the slow evil smirk Lex has after Lionel says "We're Luthors"... SO EPIC! Damn near perfect episode imo.
This is without a doubt perhaps Lex's most iconic episode in the series. Showing both his good and evil side together on screen. Rosey played this duality to a tee. So brilliantly giving the evil Lex such cunning, menance and charm that was so fun to watch. And of course the iconic line: "You were right about me all along Mr. Kent, I am the villian of the story." Always still gives me chills hearing it.😀😀😀🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤
Second most. Very iconic but second to descent. This is a top 10 episode of the series
@@jeromyframe1930 Agreed. Fair spot for it. Descent from season 7 is also a great one.
The best thread on Krypton site was "where the hell is Shelby?"
Yes I remember that!!!
🤣🤣
Onyx is so pivotal. Like many other S4 episodes, it has little to do with the main arc, but from a character standpoint, it's damn huge. It's the first clear look at the evil inside Lex and the inner turmoil that he lives with. It's also a confirmation of his feelings for Lana. In a way, it's the episode that kickstarts the events of season 5 (Lex turning to the dark side, pursuing Lana, being at odds with Clark).
And Rosenbaum's acting throughout is so brilliant. From the way he portrayed the 2 Lexes to that little smirk at the end when Lionel said "We are Luthors". Take a bow, Michael.
🌹🌹🌹 Tom, "Wouldn't it have been fun for Bad Lex to meet up w Red K Clark?"
Michael, "They would have ruled the world together"
YUP!
Yeah, it's like a peek into the future. A crystal ball if you like...
Absolutely!!!! 💯
“It’s like you possessed Power far beyond those immortal men.” Michael Rosenbaum crushed it.
Michael Rosenbaum: The absolute BEST Lex Luthor on the screen, big or small. Bar none.
10000% agree
Yes , and biggest mistake are Luthors gone from Smallville in season 7. After this i stope to watching Smallville. Without Luthors show is not same.
100000% yes!
Your assessment is spot-on
@@MISAN-vc7pc It actually remained a pretty good show after the Luthors were gone. Once you take away one or more popular characters, you gotta know how to replace them, and I think they did - Tess was pretty good. But yeah, the on-screen dynamic between Rosenbaum and Glover was top notch.
Such a polite villain, still calling them Mr and Mrs Kent, even though he shot Jonathan!
Hahaha it really does make him seem even more like a lunatic
Quite possibly Michael's best performance on the show. His acting as Alexander and Lex were amazing and how Lex was able to stay one step ahead of almost every situation including the krypto ring. "I am the villain of the story" is probably one of the best lines in the entire series. Knowing that Lex brings out the real Lionel, Lionel gets real interesting in future seasons. I always liked the "hints" from Chloe to Clark because it plays into an upcoming episode. This is 3 roses for me. Great episode because of Michael's performance.
True, but the counterpoint is how well he plays weak Lex, who is very different to "Normal" Lex.
@@aldunlop4622 I totally agree. I think this episode really shows Michael's range when it comes to his acting abilities.
This was my favorite Rosenbaum performance on Smallville. It perfectly foreshadows Lex's evil downturn later in the series.
"You were right about me all along Mr. Kent. I am the villain of the story". What a line. Love doing a reenactment of the line at a Smallville Night with us guys last year and it was awesome and lots of fun. Hope to see you guys at the Smallville Con this fall.
This episode starts the idea of Lex having a split, and internally conflicted, good/evil personality. One that plays out to its full in Fracture (ep12) and then Descent (ep16) in series 7.
This episode once again proved to me that Michael Rosenbaum is a phenomenal actor 👏 I think he did a great job playing the same character with different personalities. I also loved the scene where Lex confronts Clark, thought that was amazing. Thanks again guys ❤️
BIG Shout out to Kryptonsite! All of us Smallville fans loved that place back in the day (and I absolutely fell for one of the April Fools News days one year that Tom had been cast as Superman in a movie)
Yes indeed!!! I was also a member of Kryptonsite or K-Site as we would sometimes call it. That site would be so live after an episode and had fans logging in from all over the world!!
Also, the writers were aware of the site due to its popularity and made a "veiled" reference to it in one of the episodes -- which I cannot remember right now.
🤣💛💙❤️💋💯
"I am the villain of the story..." I drive you..." just gives chills. You get that Jekyll and Hyde personality between Lex and his darker counterpart. That darker side is the Lex that we will get to know in the coming years and this felt like a foreshadowing moment. Also seeing the Green meteor rock turning to black during the energy beam sequence looked really good.
I think that the fact that Tom and Michael had such great relationships with the crew speaks to their great character/personalities. They valued the opinions of the crew and knew their names. They talk about them often on the podcast. When it becomes known that an actor is not appreciative and kind with the crew, I find it hard to watch anything of them no matter how good of an actor. I love that Tom and Michael are the opposite of that - they clearly were appreciative, kind, gracious and so much more.
Onyx is Lex ’s and Michael ’s episode, it’s extraordinary , one of the best, one of my favorite too !! ♥️♥️♥️ Your acting is incredible Michael, great work, you prove it once again !!! 💙💙💙👍 The Iron Mask fits this episode !!♥️ Amazing and fascinating discussion ! 💙❤💖👏👏👏
"I am the villain of the story" is possibly the best line of the entire series
I started rewatching this when I found your podcast but I flew right by where you are now and am in the beginning of season 9 now. I think this is my third time seeing it. I just couldn't stop. I love you guys. I'll be joining Patreon soon.
3 Rose episode! 🌹 🌹 🌹
Michael was incredible and John Glover’s quiet rage was so impressive, the facial tick… wow.
I can’t believe Rosie gave this a 3 🌹, he said the pilot is the only 3 🌹 episode, next time warn us to sit down man, I was washing the dishes! 😅
Enjoyed this episode of Talkville, it was almost like a masterclass in acting! “I am the villain of this story” was a moment I’ll never forget!
"I am the Villain of the Story" is my favorite Lex and Michael Rosenbaum quote from the whole Smallville show!!! Onyx is my favorite Lex Luthor episode of the whole Smallville show!! I also enjoyed Michael's Hammy Acting as Evil Lex Luthor!!! It was Great meeting both you and Tom Welling at Awesome Con in March!!!
One of the best episodes of Smallville ever. Loved seeing two sides of Lex persona. I like that they showed how evil Lex can be but also that there is a good side to him too. Great scene with the Kents with that famous line, but my favorite is that last conversation with Clark
I always loved a good Lex-centered episode, and Michael killed this one. It is easily one of the top three Lex episodes of the whole series.
The Patrons are doing so well in their segments.
Hey thanks! That was me!
@@chasemcgee8501 You did great, Butts 😀
@@chasemcgee8501Would love to see more Superman content from you.
@@chasemcgee8501you did a great job 👊 loved your input
@@chasemcgee8501 You and Michael P have been my favorites so far, hope you'll feature in the show again soon!
"I am the villain of the story" will be my favourite quote in Small ville forever
Loved this episode the acting was exceptional and it marks the emergence of the darker side of Lex which Michael conveyed to us with great subtlety until the “I am the villain of the story” moment, just brilliant 🤩
Onyx really was a jump forward, flash forward showing Lex Luthor as an established villain.
This is my favorite episode in season 4. I loved how Michael Rosenbaum tapped into the future villain Lex Luthor, the same as the Clancy Brown version from the animated shows.
ooh great comparison! amazing foreshadowing they did in the plot and performance. Michael really shined as his "evil" half and playing against his "good" half
I'm now keen for an interview with Michael's double Morris. I'm sure there's some interesting stories to be told
Hands down the most important Lex episode after Veritas plot episodes and fortress confrontation with Clark in season 7 finale. Lexs journey with Veritas was a stroke of writing genius. Incredible Lex arch for his character.
there should be an alternate reality of smallville with clark kent trying to hide his powers but being so obvious that everyone knows, yet they pretend not seeing anything, and he has no clue about it (like chloe)
Sounds like a SNL skit
My favorite part of this talkville episode was the pic of the iron mask, assuming it’s in Michael’s house, is on a shelf with a wooden slide ladder. Exactly like the home of Gene Hackman’s Lex. Nice touch. You’re getting closer to turning Michael. Lol.
I mean this is as much Lex's origin story as Clark's. their destinies are so intertwined
It's why the show was never the same after season 7 (as much as that season sucked). And they waited FOREVER until they tied Tess to him.
@Costas22 idk, I think the whole Tess/Luthor entanglement was weird lol it def felt like an after thought (but most of Tess' storylines felt that way in general) like they didn't know what to do w her.
tbh they kinda ran Lex into the ground by S7 so it was kinda refreshing to take a break from him. I don't think he needed to be absent for 3 full seasons, but it was nice to see Clark deal w other villains.
@@asyouwish3636 Young Zod, yes. Doomsday and the way that storyline was handled? Not so sure. It had potential (especially with the David Bloome double identity), but their budget was too small for it. And then you had Darkseid, LOL. But even if those villains worked, Lex just means so much more to the show. It was his journey with Clark's in parallel.
Anyway, Tess could have been Lena Luthor from the off (like we saw in the Supergirl series) and played the part of the champagne villain, but for seasons 8-9 she was all over the place. Motives kept changing, allianches kept shifting... Only Cassidy Freeman's talent kept the character interesting. I did like her redemption arc in S10, but we saw how that ended (I don't see Bryan Q Miller's comic as canon, personally).
Another reason why I wish season 10 had more of Lex in it. That one little scene was not enough. Really wish they had brought Michael on for that whole final season.
@@MShaiqable I believe that was Michael's decision. The show would have had him stay or at least be reoccurring. Lex was featured pretty heavily in S10 so yeah I think if Michael had agreed to it, he would have been back sooner than the finale.
A good episode but an even better pod.
As usual, Tom is asking all the best questions and Rosie was really engaged!
The patreon guest was really great too...
Always good to hear/see Ryan as well!
39:01 Tom giving an analogy about piano keys and they show the clip of Lex's bloody fingers playing, whoever edited this that was a great bit 🤣
What's interesting is when Lex's inner self kisses Lana, he says that he's wanted to for a very long time. She just turned 18 in S4. 😂
So him desiring underage to that extreme really does make him the "villain of the story." 💯
It is lex darker half. To lie and say a men can't find the body of a women who has reached sexual maturity attractive is if ignoring biology. It is finding her being young sexual that is perverted.
right! and at same time think about how much he has to suppress is ID for his whole life at this point, and not just his "evil" tendencies. the fact that at 24, he befriends a 14yr old to the point of brotherly love and spends 4 years hanging w HS kids, speaks to how he never got to be a real kid. he's a brilliant billionaire who has "everything" except for emotional support so he craves it and seeks it out from children (because kids offer genuine emotion unconditionally).
and even now, Evil Lex 1st instinct was to join forces w Clark. He doesn't demand that he should rule over Clark (something future Lex will try w Superman)
@@asyouwish3636 Whoa! Deep, and very astute!
@@asyouwish3636, Well said :)
There's a deleted scene in this episode that always stood out to me where bad Lex meets the security guard who Chloe later finds dead. Bad Lex arrives at the gate of LuthorCorp and the guard says "Didn't you just come through here?" And bad Lex says "Are you keeping tabs on me...Martin?" As he looks at his name tag. Martin the security guard says "No, I was just...wondering." Bad Lex says "I'm not paying you to wonder. You get a tiny little paycheck every week for saying 'Thank you, Mr. Luthor.' 'Have a nice day, Mr. Luthor.' Now do you wanna keep getting that check or am I gonna have to terminate you?" Martin replies "Thank you Mr. Luthor. Have a nice day, Mr. Luthor." Bad Lex says "You too, Martin." Martin then sees the good Lex with Clark on the security camera and Martin goes for his gun but bad Lex already has his out. He says "Looks like I'm gonna have to let you go after all." And bad Lex shoots and kills Martin and gets out of the car, thus setting up the scene where Chloe finds his body in the lab. I don't know why this scene was deleted but it's a really good scene. Maybe it was for time.
This episode is one of the best episodes of Smallville. The way this show made Lex’s fall into darkness was awesome.
My theory for why Lex doesn't figure out Clark's secret...he subconsciously doesn't want to know. Lex doesn't want Clark to be someone he could use to get more power.
His desire for a normal friend, is stronger than his need for power.
If Clark has power, Lex's ambition will destroy their friendship, and Lex knows it.
So, Lex dismisses any possibility that Clark has exploitable power.
I like how Alexander gave Lionel a Scar like Scar in Lion King.
Michael-your rendition of LxL was so great throughout! I saw the inner struggle from the beginning, and the split put the exclamation point on the character. Great acting! My favorite 2000’s TV show. Have watched at least 5 times. Thanks for doing the podcast, guys!
Happy for Michael that everyone enjoyed "ONYX" so much! There are a lot of similarities to Tom's favorite "Transference" for sure! The Black Kryptonite does affect Clark, which is why he grabbed his pulse when he saw it in the lab. Interesting to hear about the camera lens! Glad to know Michael still has one of the iron mask! Nice to hear the Jeremy Irons "piano keys" story from Tom, almost 20 years later once again! "We're Luthors." x2 is also legendary!
Congratulations To Chase! AKA "I Made Talk Ville Say Butts!"
One of the most iconic episodes 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Michael's best performance of the series! Amazing!! 3 Roses.
I was hoping someone would mention the scene with Lex and Lana and how Lex’s shirt collar extended over his jacket was a reference to Lex Luther’s classic comic book attire. A very subtle but obvious Easter egg the producers put in that I love to see.
One of Smallville's greatest episodes and an episode that further cemented Rosey as being the best Lex. Three roses 🌹 🌹🌹
This is easily the best Lex Luthor episode of the entire series. Michael Rosenbaum killed it in this. We got a glimpse of The villain of the story.
Easily one of the top ten episodes in the history of this show ! And very entertaining to see you guys dissect the episode ! Keep em coming !!
Also the cage spilting scene was awesome. We are the Luthor’s belongs on a shirt. I enjoyed the coy smile that Lex gave at the end. I wonder how much that he remembers.
I live 15 minutes away from the location of the NJ Con. CAN'T. WAIT.
It wasn't mentioned, but I love the foreboding line that Michael says at the end when Clark says it wasn't him, to which Lex questions whether the experiment created an evil Lex or if that was what is really inside of him.
Excellent 👌🎸
I set my alarm to wake up at 4 a.m. to watch Onyx way back when. Life before streaming.
This is the perfect episode on describing the yin and yang ☯️ in all of us.
They describe it as “Bad Lex vs Good Lex”
How I describe it is Ego Lex vs Lex.
Everyone has an ego inside of them that craves power, greed, control, etc…
Lex fed his ego for so long, that it became his own monster! His grip on it is very loose.
Stoicism is the cure to our egos. There’s a balance needed in order to live with it. Or else we will always let our emotions control us.
One of my favorite episodes of the entire series. I'm so glad Michael rosenbaum had as much fun doing this episode as we did watching it. Smallville is interesting, because some of their iterations of the characters of people's favorites. I know for me, Michael rosenbaum's lex and Erica Durance's Lois are my favorite iterations of the character, across any media.
🌹🌹🌹 This is a episode for those who have not seen the show I say this is the best actor who played on screen and they are blown away. Best scene is the iconic Villain line this episode and performance should of earned a award
Tom IS the Welling of the story.
LOL!
One of the greatest performances on any tv show or movie, great job Michael!!
YES! Finally one of my favorite episodes of all time! When I think of Smallville, I think of this episode and Descent
Always loved the detail of the green kryptonite ring Lex wears when confronting Clark. Little homage it is to the one Lex wore later in some stories in the comics.
Prob the single greatest performance in that genre ever. Michael brought an edginess and darkness to the Lex character that no one since has replicated.
*LOVE THIS EPISODE!! This is where LEX really shows his true self. Michael, this is why you are the 2nd best Lex Luthor with that scene... "I am the villain of the story!"*
For the first time in weeks, Michael is engaged in the show and it’s because he gets to talk about himself. Imagine that.
Yup. I had the same thought.
Seems pretty typical of most people
Wow, Tom is firing in all cylinders for the episode of Talkville.
Those three roses are definitely deserved this episode. I also agree with Michael that this version of Lex would have been ideal for the season finale. My one disappointment with this series is that the Lex-Clark arc, which was IMO the most compelling aspect of this story, always felt incomplete to me.
Thanks for S04E17 🥂🥂🍻🍻
And yes, you ARE the villain of the story! 💪💪
Funny Tom mentioned the Count of Monte Cristo as one of his favorite classic literature books. It was written by the same guy that wrote the man in the iron mask referenced in this episode, Alexander Dumas. For general knowledge, the man in the iron mask is just 1 book in a 5 book series that begins with the Three Musketeers and spans the lifetimes of D'Artagnan, Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. A good read beyond just the popular 3 Musketers and Iron mask. It is lengthy, the series has to be over 2500 pages.
Loved Tom's question about the ATM pressure affecting Kryptonite ❤😂 I think it all started out green, and the way the meteors hit the ATM and ground is how we got all the other colors, and also explains why the other colors are so infrequent compared to the original green
It's an excellent question. Makes you wonder what is the starting color of kryptonite? And what environmental effects have to happen in order to obtain the other colors? Applying heat will give you black, but what about blue? Red? Gold? The gem stone kryptonite from Persuasion?
@@Kiddo_X yeah I think it all starts out green and depends on the heat/pressure/point of impact/cooling speed etc to determine the other types (maybe they're on a spectrum). Maybe red is natural too, maybe that one turns into the rainbow K in Persuasion 🤷♀️
Onyx has to be one of my top 5 episodes of Season 4. We got to see a truly evil Lex, giving us a hint into Lex’s future. Everyone’s acting was great, but Michael was the best actor in this episode. Also, I love how Lex brings Lionel’s true personality back to the surface in this episode. I give 🌹 🌹 🌹 for the episode.
Speaking of Spirit, the next episode, my favorite part is when Dawn inhabits Clark. She looks at Chloe, saying “The crown’s mine, bitch!” before shoving her. I just love how Tom delivers that line. Martha Kent’s dancing is also a funny moment.
I really liked the "I'm getting seriously tired of hearing my own voice" line Bad Lex says. Such an ironic thing to hear Rosenbaum say.
