DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

As well as being the only counter to regular magearna sets, even being able to use her as a setup fodder because Mothra has at least 69% chance to OHKO non-assault vest Magearna while always surviving 2 non critical specs fleur cannons. Not that this matters anymore since Magearna and Cinderace (a Volcarona's check) were banned, but considering how most of the biggest OU treats are a bit slow, Volcarona can maybe become the OU face.

Volcarona is 100% my favourite bug type of all time. Sweeping full legendary teams in ORAS on Battle Spot was so fun.

@@beta511ee4 Because them are inmune to the others dangerous hazards (Spikes and web) and earthquake. They also have enough strengths to deserve that support outside the spike inmunnity:
Zard-Y: Drought + 159 special attack, making him the best fire type wallbreaker available.
Ho-oh: Regenerator, a 106/90/154 bulk alongside a respectable 130 attack, a 100 BP move with 50% chance to burn, and having a good matchup against most of the metagame; just an amazing tank in Ubers.
Moltres: In UU is mostly due to Z-Flying, good special attack and his great matchup against Scizor, Amoongus, Infernape and Most Cobalion. In OU is due to the pressure + roost + flametrower + defog combination for stall, but it's niche and that's why he is UU in the first place (Which isn't bad in SM scale).
Gen 8: *Hold My Heavy Duty Boots*
@@N12015 I'm quite late but I have a few corrections nonetheless. Zard-y: This Mon is terrible in SM due to being walled by pex, slow, and reliant on drought. It didn't have enough raw power or a way to boost itself and honestly blacephalon (who was meh in its own right) outclassed it due to the ability to hold z moves or specs. Oh and it wasn't that great in gen 6 either due to mega slots being FAR more important, weather teams being dead, hazard removal rarer and harder, and tyranitar being even more prevelant.
Ho-oh: Brave Bird is the preferrable stab move to spam actually, sacred fire invites in the primals for free basically and most are CB so brave bird both hurt and was regened off easily.
Moltres: Yeah this one's basically 100% correct
its interresting to see a pokemon Quadruple weak to Steath Rock with streghts enough to compensate.
This of all videos have taught me a lot about meta manipulation and how to compensate.

AZ people mostly just say that it has terrible designs because like 4 pokemon ruin the whole gen lol. But in gen 5 for every vanilluxe there’s An excadrill.

Most likely. It still is on the sucky side with that 90 speed.
Probably because it also Resisted Fairy-Types, unlike Incineroar, and could hold Eviolite, so you can free up an item slot for another Pokemon.

To be fair FSG has massively increased their production quality since then, especially since they started covering Gen 7 as well about a year back. Jynx is absolutely not as good overall as fellow Gen 1 OU staples like Starmie, Snorlax, and Gengar, and while it did have Gen 7 covered as well even if you only include the gens 1-6 coverage of the Jynx video it would still be mucj longer than any of the other Gen 1 OU mons.

I LOVE IT! I'm happy that Volcarona has an overall good competitive streak, it is an awesome Pokemon both design and ability. The Volcarona on my mono-bug team for Showdown is basically a win condition, I changed it to a Physically Defensive variant so it can not only survive a Landorus-T's Earthquake but take it out as well.

Gen 8 singles update: With heavy duty boots Volcarona is arguably the most dangerous setup sweeper in the tier. With Psychic nothing can wall Volcarona safely except for Heatran, some players opt for more bulky sets with safeguard to protect against stall. However Volcarona, along with most setup sweepers, can have a difficult time setting up due to the popularity of switch moves, especially on walls that Volcarona would normally switch in on such as Corviknight.

Gen 9: it’s paradox forms are good, but the main form is really good due to its bulk

I have no clue what competitive is like in gen 9 so hearing tyranitar in like RU and volca in Ubers frightens me on what the metagame is possibly like

It was never a legendary. It was just one of the few regular Pokemon that had a static encounter
Give Quiver Dance to any other Mon without a 4x stealth rock weakness or bad stats like Venomoth and watch it crush the meta. It's a sign that they decided to make Volcarona so weak to hazards because otherwise it would close to Ubers

Because that would force more dragon types to be used therefore making the metagame worse. Volc still wouldn’t be banned because special walls and scarf exists, and pressuring the metagame is still healthy, but there’s a big difference between pressing the metagame and causing direct teambuilding constraints to the point where certain mons are required.
Smogon knows what they’re doing by the way. Just because a Pokémon has counters doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be banned.

And in Gen 9 it literally has no OU counters, forcing the council to ban it to Ubers.
It just gets better with every Gen, taking advantage of new mechanics and items to the point that with Tera and Boots it probably reached its strongest version possible.

@@darkgerry92 terraform works best for volcarona since it will heal half HP in stealth rock.
@@MisterSleep1123 yeah but that would cause quite an imbalance IMO. Being immune to a 4x weakness should never really be a thing unless it's a legendary and even then IDK how I would truly feel about it. At least with Solar Shield it keeps Volcarona safe from water moves and as a bonus works even better on rain teams. But if that isn't enough then how about Solar Shield also protects from weather damage? That or possibly make it so it can melt away hazards on entry but can not prevent them from being set?

Aesthetically speaking, Volcarona is miles ahead of Ferrothorn.
So, only for that, i think Volcarona deserve to be the first.
If I would choose someone other, i think of Scolipede,Krookodile or Zoroark.
