Probably time to do a body armor / cuirass of some kind.
Just purchased this pattern to make a modified version for myself. Love the flexibility of this design!
I've been leathercrafting for nearly a decade, my mentor has been doing it for half a century, always strop your blades, even ceramic, if you do it right you'll never have to grind them
Took you long enough! Lol.
Been waiting for this one for awhile.
If I recall. I talked to you about this pattern 3 or 4 years ago!!
Well done!
Prototyping a craft like this is very similar to making a mockup in tailoring. Itâs really cool to see how the two intertwine!!!
I use ceramic blades exclusively and always strop. If youâve cased the leather properly and strop often thereâs no reason to sharpen on a stone. I usually wait til the wax stops releasing air. But I mix orange oil and stearic acid in the wax for flexion and durability.
Thank you for your work !
Always look forward to getting more of your patterns!
Excellent work as always good Sir!
Glad to see videos back. These look sweet.
As always beautiful work.
Great video as always . Thankyou.
Wohoo! Bring it on... Didn't disappoint, cheers!
Yes, make the patterns! I'll run wild.
Very cool
Here in the near future im go8ng ro have to go on a massive pattern purchase spree. I like the look of all your works
These look great after wax
Wish I would of had your videos in the late 80's when I did the SCA fighting. Should get back into would be some good exercise.
âKnee FightingâŠ. Itâs a little redicilous, but thatâs what we doâ
Just wanted to say thank you for always being sponsored but Lonsdale. Because of you I tried them. They are great. Thanks for suggesting them.
Watching this with 699 views, but i was thinking about these for a bit. I might have to buy the pattern!
Satisfying
BELLISIMO.
Number one! đ
For some reason, it never occurred to me that they made bevelers of different thickness. That is definitely going on my shopping list!
Awesome tutorial!
I hope to see the tutorial for thr attaching greaves soon....??
Thanks again for sharing?
Just let the stay separate.
I've been wanting to get into leather working for some time and this video was so informative! Thanks and now i finally feel confident enough to try it out!
Dive in and slowly expand your skills. It's not that hard really. :)
:)
Ok I was literally thinking of making leg armor, never said anything out loud. Now this is in my recommendations... THE ALGORITHM IS IN MY HEAD GET IT OUT

I can fĂĄ them or lĂĄta them. đ
Beautiful work as always. Thank you. I miss Heavy Fighting so much. Due to some injuries. My Doctor will not let me fight heavy anymore. I can still fight Rapier though.
That sucks but happy you can still do rapier.

conversion from 12 oz to mm is near damn impossible to find.Awesome video as always Magnus. SkÄl
12oz is 4.8mm
Thank you for your great videos! Are these armor pieces effective against blades?
If you're doing blunted steel they'll certainly hold up, but they get murdalized more for sure given the narrow edge of steel. I'd also be tempted to experiment more with water hardening if I was working more with the HEMA community.
But I do have HEMA people buying my patterns and making armor with them on the regular, but I personally don't do it much.
Pritty snazy.
Paracord; have ever tried carpet cord?
Could you either show on a manicin or a person what all your leather armour pieces look like put together.
Some day maybe. Just so busy, that's a great idea though.
Very nice piece brother! I was not expecting you to join the knee pieces with the thigh pieces for some reason! Still though it turned out really amazing! How long does something like this take you to make?
Hey there! Great looking stuff and have missed you!
I have a question on your setup if you don't mind answering: what is the white table made of that you do your cutting on? It looks like a massive cutting cutting board and I've never seen anything like it.
Hope all is going well!
Yup, it's a giant slab of cutting board material from Associated Plastics... I think it's 1/2".... I can't recall.
I like your method for doing the brass rivets. I actually do copper rivets that way for halters and bridles when I want a more wild west look but I have a tool that peens it evenly when you stick the stem of the rivet into it. Have you tried that method? If so, do you prefer the anvil-peen hammer method?
I have setters and sometimes use them. I've gotten pretty good at operating without them though.
You should do a test with Skallagrim to see just how durable the waxed leather is!
Waxed leather vs. sharpened steel is very much a loss for waxed leather. The only reason to wax harden leather armor is 1: for blunt force combat like rattan fighting, 2: it's easy to do. Baking or boiling in some form of cuir bouilli is far more period and protective against steel.

do you do commissions for your drawings?
Awesome video! What chapter do you belong to?
I'm in the Kingdom of An Tir in the SCA
but where is the crafting table and the 8 pieces of leather to craft the chestplate?
Yo, speaking of arming belts, you wouldnât happen to have a pattern for that, would ya?
Hey man, I know you like Vikings, but how about an Aztec design?
greetings from Mexico.
Any ideas? Examples?

I've got some old leather from my grandpas shop and it smells like rotting fish but only after I've touched it. The leather itself just smells like old leather but after I've handled it my hands smell really gross. How do I fix this?
I know some old leathers were finished with cod oil, which may be the source. Could also be other animal fats in the finishing process, that have gone rancid over the years. There's not really a great solution for getting oils out of leather, but you could give it a few soak and dry sessions to see if it helps.
@@stingraybob8933 thank you so much
So I have a question, maybe youâve already said it and commenters can send me to the vid. But can you sculp the drawings on leather that you buy from lets say the market. Which Iâm guessing is threated with stuff already. Because I got a piece of purple leather I would like to use for a wallet.
Not sure what you mean by sculp, but if you mean carve the leather with images then no you can't. Well.. you could cut it and it would woooork technically but it would look like crap. It needs to be vegetable tanned leather with the process I layed out here.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop first thank you for replying! And yeah meant carve, sorry. Couldn't come to mind so I said sculp đ ...but yeah that's what I thought. Thank you for the info!!
You can check the tannage pretty simply by cutting a small piece, if the cross section is a greyish colour then it's chrome tanned and won't work, as said it needs to be veg tanned. Bridle can also be worked but it's not so easy because af all the fats and grease that's been put into it, for bridle you need to properly case it first (slightly damp sawdust in an airtight container with the leather for 24 hours) which works with English bridle like Sedgwick, I imagine it would be the same for American bridle which is tanned differently. Wickett & Craig I think they're called, they do an English bridle in the US, would love to see something like this done with it, wouldn't need the hot wax either
what thickness is that leather? and what animal re you getting this from ? XD
The leather is 12 to 14oz vegetable tanned saddle skirting from a cow.
Nothing wrong with kneefighting! :D
Does a number on 2 of the most important joints in your body, I've popped one of them and ground them out pretty brutally.
how much wax does it take to fill that roaster oven?
Is lots an answer? A couple "slabs"?
@@DarkHorseWorkshop gotcha. i ordered the 10lb slab from your amazon storefront. about to get some of your patterns. love your work!
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Got the war belt and an armor bundle. I do rattan combat in Louisiana in the United states. Much love for all the care you put into your work and videos!
What kind of wax?
I always just use paraffin wax.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop thank you
Fancy the leather armor, huh? Something to be said for going light.
waiting for the influx of people coming here after the vambraces one got suggested everywhere.
It went nuts the last month same last year this time. Maybe a Halloween thing.
Gah
Why do you bathe your piece in hot wax
As a hobbyist beekeeper of non-native invasive agricultural livestock honeybees*, most beeks wax dip their wooden hive boxes so find your local beekeeping clubs and see when they wax dip, they may allow leather to be dipped for a small fee. Some clubs are very strict, new bare wood boxes only, others are more lax, most use paraffin microcrystalline & resins and some also add some real beeswax for smell. Those wax temps are around 270-285*F
*True, honeybees are not native to the entire US Continent. (Europe and Africa native range) Beekeeping is not conservation, it's agriculture. It's not good for our native pollinators nor the environment we've learned. Outcompeting for forage, transmitting diseases and viruses to native pollinators and most likely propagating more non-native plants than native plants = bad for the ecosystem. ONLY native plants (and animals) help to heal an ecosystem. Beekeeping is good for people, healthy hive products, money, pollination services for unsustainable ag practices, but it's not helping the environment. Hence we are downsizing our beekeeping to eventually nothing. Located in SE PA.
