Making Leather Armor - DIY - Leather Gorget / Neck Armor
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 24. 07. 2024
- Today I'm once again showing you how to make leather armor! This time it's a wax hardened Leather Gorget, which is armor for your neck. This armor is created with rattan sport fighting in mind as part of the Society for Creative Anachronism, but can obviously be used for all sorts of things including Cosplay, Costumes, or maybe some kind of crazy dog collar. Have fun!

Well I had a significant number of people ask for this pattern, so here it is. What am I making next that's not armor related? Finally this damn bag I've had on my mind for months I think. Any suggestions?
Quick question. If you werent using a plastic tab to lock it in would you use another pice of hardened leather?
Suggestion: leg armor next? (half or full+sabatons)
@@StrifeA217 I've done hardened leather in the past.
hardened leather Foldable Game Masters board? With carving and pattern work? Something id considered myself but would be interested to see what you'd come up with
can we get a kraken design on the next project?
Thanks for the mention! Let's do a collaboration together soon!
I have been doing leatherwork for a great many years. I found your channel a year ago and I have to say I love what you do. Your videos are freaking brilliant and your patterns are fantastic. Keep them coming
These are considered by many SCA Heavy fighters. Myself included. To be Best in Slot!
Glad to finally see you make this video Richard!
Despite having a steel gorget, I am tempted to make one of these (along with everything else) for my HEMA kit. Now just need a pattern for torso armour
I own a gorget made by you and it was so cool seeing how it was made. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it. :)
When I was doing SCA leather armor (Thorgrimr from the Armour Archive here!) I liked to use aluminum roofing nails as rivets.
Stropping! I love it! It is so cool!
this gave me great ideas for modifying a leather jacket into riding armor for driving my trike
Let's see
I'm here to get ideas for riding gear.
I have just recently found your channel and not only do I love your tutorials and narration, but you have also inspired me to get back into leatherwork and create a set of the Ronin/Hawkeye armor pieces for myself once I get some more practice in.
Awesome to hear.
Love your work/videos thank you
sweet channel. im making leather armor now. thanks for the ideas and motivation.
Love your work...think I'm going to try some. Ty for such a well worked piece with detailed explanations!
You are so welcome!
In the zombie apocalypse I'm gonna be decked out in Dark Horse Armour.
Also, hi from Edmonton. Love your content, your voice, and your designs.
If you are going to use armor, do some research about historical armor. Replicas of historical armor are much more practical then modern fantasy cosplay pieces
I watch yours, your friends and Guyton's pages for all your armor stuff. Great stuff!
Yeah those guys are great.
Wow nice!
That is an interesting way to back stitch
This machine if I put it in reverse is a bit scary so my back stitching is done by lifting my foot moving in and knowing my targeting pretty well.
It's gorgetous đ
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL AAAAAAA
Screaming intensifies.
I just subscribed Richard!
I'm in the industry too in Raincity, just got my 2nd category Props too so those tutorials are a gold mine for me. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!
(I sent you an email too with a couple of questions)
Got it, just been grinding this video out, will get back to you soon.
Classic SCA dog collar.
I have the Vytis gorget on order, wish I'd seen this video first haha. I already have all the tools and leather, even down to the wax bath, which I use for adding weight to paracord whips.
Do it anyways. Always learning and working on skills. Or do it as a gift for someone. Email me I'll send you the pattern. Cheers. :)
Dope!
I live in criminal neighborhood, so I made this... "gorget" to protect myself from a neck stubbing. All day I walked around a block, looking like a sex slave in that thing. Finally some thug with a knife came and demanded my wallet. I felt that this was my shining moment. "Ha!" said I "Stub me in my neck, you lowlife!"
He stubbed me in a kidney...
Thank you, bearded currier!
Would be nice for Hema practice
I was wondering if you had any recommendations for machine thread? Just ordered one of the cheap leather sewing machines but have no clue about what size thread to get.
Assalamu Walaikum my dear brother đđI am from India and I like the way you work, I have subscribed to your CZcams channel.
Great video! I just invested in a CB4500 (I'm in the UK and can't get the Cobra over here) and I'm just getting to grips with the BEAST. You have an interesting technique for finishing the stitch line without back tacking. Is there and advantage to this over just reversing the machine and going back a couple of stitches?
I always go back over my stitches to finish them. Maybe it cut strangely.
First I want that sewing machine.
Second. Seeing you spray super 77 makes my arm hair feel sticky
what glue are you using?
what kine of plastic do you use?
Can I hand stitch after hardening or do I need to punch all the stitching holes before hardening?
Do you ever make riding gear? Motorcycle is what I'm thinking. A number of your armors can be transferred over. But I was wondering about gauntlets/gloves with protection for the knuckles. Those shin guards that go all the way around with knee pads. And helmet ideas. These are a few this I'm wondering about so if you get inspiration from those ideas that would be cool
I just buy this pattern but how to make the correct measurements?
Absolutely awesome, makes my gorget jealous! One note, your videos are starting to have ads in the middle that do not match your volume. About soiled my trousers when it came on
Ad was really loud? Means my videos are a bit quiet I guess.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop They are a bit quiet. Normally not an issue, but with ads coming on in the middle, you may want to look into boosting the audio output in your mix to match your opening music. That is usually at a good volume.
Love ya work ! Its a bit weird not hearing a hammer blow sound when you see it on screen. Like seeing a punch land in a movie without hearing the cabbage punch sound effect.
If I'm playing music while I work I have to mute my audio track in the edit
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Ahhh IC. Maybe a bit of Foley work ? funny and informative :)
I was waiting for a new video and as always you bring something awesome.
I have a suggestion for something to make and that would be a leather sword scabbard.
Well that one way to make bondage gear.
Maybe in the description you can say what kind of sewing machine you using for that project.
Sounds good, will add it.

Ooo.. thank you.
Woo hoo!! The zombies don't stand a chance!!
Anyone have any idea what density that foam is. Im not sue if I missed it on the video
Honestly it's just closed cell foam from the foam shop, I've never thought about density since it's all they have.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop I guess I need to go into a store and just feel it.I'm too use to online shopping, lol. Thanks.
could you use a toaster oven if you don't want to use the oven?
At your own risk.. I'd be very careful and it'd have to be large.
could the plastic be exchanged for a natural material?
I don't see why not, simple enough for sure.
Have you ever seen/wanted to make a leather helmet similar to what was worn in the movie "Braveheart"?
I can't believe that hockey goalies never wore these things
They have an aventail hanging from their masks that do the same job, I believe.
Skyrim vibe anyone?
Iâm not gonna
Dude, get yourself a pedicure. Take care of the hands that feed you.
The hands that feed me are always a mess. Not a lot of point. Funny I did mention how awful they were after filming though.
Lol he feeds himself with his toes??
@@CraigH999 Haha, I didn't even clue into that, nice.
@@CraigH999 LOLOLOLOLOL
Hey, those are working manâs hands. So thatâs expected. Give the guy a break!
I dislike the pattern.
Could you be more specific? What do you not like about it? Did you buy it? I think I've sold about 600 gorgets so far, it's people's favorite item of mine. Always looking to improve though.
