      I'm subbed to the channel now, but not a member. What brought me here was looking on youtube for leather crafting. What made me sub was your viking knotwork. I wanted to do celtic knotwork on leather and needed some tips for getting started. It's turning out very well and I'm happy I found your channel. One of these days I'll likely make my son-in-law some of your armor. He'd enjoy that. By the way, I haven't checked the patterns in your shop. How do you make sure they fit people?

    Its so satisfying to watch you tool leather. I'm a beginner, probably the coolest thing I've done is to tool a leather knife sheath to look like gator skin. It actually came out pretty well.

    I love the all the play by plays, the step by steps, you don't hold onto a point and waste time unless you need to emphasize that point. Great teacher. If you take suggestions in ideas to make, what about shoes/boots? you've practically made a whole kit at this point lol.

    Can you do a video on weights/types of leathers and their uses and properties?
    Also how would you add the padding in the inside of Boromir's Bracers? If you need a reference Adam Savage just did a show and tell of it on youtube.

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  Před 2 lety

      That's a great video, thanks for sharing. I'm not sure if the padded layer comes out of the Vambrace, I didn't see anything on the inside that would make me think it's mounted to it, but it was hard to tell. The padded layer is probably 3 parts, a thin brown leather layer for the top, maaaaaaybe some super thin foam or cotton padding, and then either a very thin leather or fabric for the inside lining. then it's just diamond stitched like you might find on a gambeson, though don't quote me on it being called "diamond stitched". Then after that a leather binding is sewn all around the whole edge. The upper is 2 parts and has an obvious spot where those pieces are stitched together.

    Nice work! I like how you can speed up the video so we can see the finished piece in 10 minutes. Although I am curious to know about how long does it take for an experienced leather craftsman to complete a project like this one? Keep up the good work!

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  Před 2 lety +1

      Well it would depend on if that experienced leather craftsman has a sewing machine or if they're hand stitching. If they're carving and painting of if they're just doing it without art. Can be all over the map really. With art is tough to calculate since I don't mkae much with that detail for people anymore. I bet though if I had the raw footage still it would be like... 10-12 hours maybe? Really hard to say.

    I have a question about why you mounted the buckle and strap to the sides in that orientation. I have seen lots of armor built that way but not sure why. I place my straps and buckles on the opposite sides so that the strap would hang down.

  • @Neverendingname
    @Neverendingname Před 2 lety

    Love the videos. First time commenting. Inspired me to get into leatherworking myself, as well. That, and two trips to the Texas Renaissance Faire. Always look forward to seeing the next video, but if I may ask, for my own curiosity. If possible, could a helmet piece be done one day? When I was last at the faire, I saw a hardened leather helmet they called a Jarl's helm. Not sure what the exact style name is, but it had a similar look to the helmet from the Stormlord Armor set of Skyrim, a modded piece. I rather liked the helmet and was hoping to learn, one day distant, how to remake this piece I saw, but in the meanwhile, I'd greatly enjoy seeing someone far more mastered than I craft something similar. Much thanks Magnus, especially for the quality vids so far.

    Getting back in SCA/rattan combat and considering replacing some of my gear with leather. Great video - definitely pushing me down the path of leatherworking.
    I am, however, pretty new to the craft (I've made some straps...haven't had to replace them yet!). First, can you suggest any learning resources for newbies. Second, in this video, at 5:30, you discourage the use of painting with brushes. Is that just a personal preference for the paint pens, or is there a more practical reason?

    • @stevenmoran5606

    Would adding padding inside the bazubands increase the comfort and would it also require alterations to the pattern?

    • @DarkHorseWorkshop
      @DarkHorseWorkshop  Před 2 lety

      I'd always pad these, the only pattern change will depend on you arm size and padding size. Because these are one peice elbow/vam they need a bit of movement in the forearm for things to roll properly anyways so padding 100% a good idea.

    As a hobbyist beekeeper of non-native invasive agricultural livestock honeybees*, most beeks wax dip their wooden hive boxes so find your local beekeeping clubs and see when they wax dip, they may allow leather to be dipped for a small fee. Some clubs are very strict, new bare wood boxes only, others are more lax, most use paraffin microcrystalline & resins and some also add some real beeswax for smell. Those wax temps are around 270-285*F
    *True, honeybees are not native to the entire US Continent. (Europe and Africa native range) Beekeeping is not conservation, it's agriculture. It's not good for our native pollinators nor the environment we've learned. Outcompeting for forage, transmitting diseases and viruses to native pollinators and most likely propagating more non-native plants than native plants = bad for the ecosystem. ONLY native plants (and animals) help to heal an ecosystem. Beekeeping is good for people, healthy hive products, money, pollination services for unsustainable ag practices, but it's not helping the environment. Hence we are downsizing our beekeeping to eventually nothing. Located in SE PA.
