    No sh*t, we've finally done a "What's so special" video about the 2JZ! Often touted as one of the best straight six engines on the planet, Toyota's 2JZ has reached almost mythical status in the tuning scene, but why? It can't all be because of some buster with a penchant for tuna on white with no crust, can it? Join us as we tear one of these legendary units down and take a closer look at what is inside.

    The sequential turbo system does actually use both turbos after 4000rpm. Has a very interesting system for blocking the hot and cold outlets of the second turbo to stop it from spinning. There's a 3rd valve that opens to allow it to start spinning at I think it's 3500rpm from memory. Then at 4000rpm, the other valves open up and then both are working like a parallel system.

    Hi mate, minor correction, the sequential setup on the 2jz is a primary that runs on all six cylinders, which then pre-spools the second identical turbo, before bringing it online to provide parallel twin operation, ie. two matching turbos each fed from 3 cylinders. I am in the process of setting up an elite 2500 to run the factory sequential system with high flowed JDM CT20 turbos.

    Great Video first of all and good explanation for non engine builders like myself. One engine I would like to see an episode about is the 3S variant that Toyota used in some of the Supra's for racing like you mentioned and possibly some explanation as to why those were chosen over the 7m series or the JZ series. Also if you could show the Iconic "Cheat" valve that got them disqualified using the Celica GT Four in Rallying.

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 Před rokem

      The 3S-GTE is the same engine (essentially) as the MkII MR-2 turbo and the Celica GT-Four. They used it (longitudinally) in the JGTC Supra because the GT500 class rules were set up to limit the engines to around 500 bhp (or more likely, PS... hence the name, and likewise the GT300 class cars were limited to around 300 HP). The 3S was a noticeably lighter and shorter engine since it it was only a 4-cylinder, and they would have no problem making 500 HP on a race variant of that 2.0 liter inline-4. The narrower powerband from getting 500 HP from a 2-liter vs 500 HP from a 3-liter would be a minimal issue since race engines spend their lives at the top of the rev range anyway, and the marginally reduced throttle response ("turbo lag") was an easy sacrifice when compared to saving a sizeable chunk of weight from the heaviest end of the car. Weight is the enemy in racing, and reducing weight while making the weight distribution better is basically the holy grail for a motorsports engineer.
      Edit: As far as the restrictor "cheat" from the Toyota WRC cars, he'd be hard pressed to make a video about it, I think. There are almost no images of the device itself on the internet, only a few drawn diagrams, and I imagine the devices themselves were all destroyed afterwards.

      @@freestyleskylineNot really here to debate, as this is about the 2jz, but nearly all the toyota engines with "ge" or "gte" has Yamaha stamps on the head, even if the 2jz doesn't have such, then it simply has been slightly revised as the head is nearly identical to the 1jz that was definitely had the yamaha stamp on the head. Edit: there were a number of reasons Toyota used the 3s in the JGTC race cars and it's not just because they had already been developing it. Using a 4 cylinder enabled better weight balance, was lighter and as turbo restrictors were in use, the 3S gave them their power goals with a better power band than a 2jz if it were to have a restrictor.

Mark the teeth with white marker to the belt, jam something down between to hold the belt tensioner. A pipe wrench will hold the vvt to remove the bolt and a screw driver though the sprocket for the other. Took less time than two hours.
    Also the vvt can stay in place, just pull the 5 bolts to replace the O ring to stop the leak. Took me 20 minutes.

    Probably worth mentioning that the VVTi GTE engine was never released in the USA so you can't put USDM intake cam in it like you can with a non-VVTi 2JZ-GTE.
    Also, the VVTi mechanism itself is pretty much disabled around 5k RPM and the VVTi GTE variant also has a slightly higher redline compared to non, 6800rpm for non and 7200rpm for VVTi.

      my ge non-vvti will rev to about 7.2/7.3k if i hold the gears, granted makes barely any power but it does it - even though the line on the dash is at 6.8k :)

    Reminds me of the 1997 volvo straight six but this motor seems to be thinner the volvo was wider also shorter great size motor this 2jz. The volvo motor was designed by porsche and is a sweet heart of an engine. I wish the pcv system was better though and better ac condenser rubbers are too brittle and the coolant desevoiur is a joke. They never changed it from the 80s. But what can I say I have had it for decades lol still drives me everywhere comfortably.

  • @tagperformance
    @tagperformance Před rokem +1

    Let's talk about how people are taking the 2jz to the next level by using a 8hp70 8 speed transmission. Also one thing that makes the this setup even better adding a procharger to the mix and now you have a updated monster.😁
