If you're a JDM fan you'll probably agree that the 1990s was the golden age for Japanese performance engines. We got the 2JZ, the RB, the 4G63 as well as the Honda K-series. All over-engineered, and all capable of producing power well above their factory spec. But there’s another engine that we haven’t covered yet and one that definitely belongs in that group - Nissan’s SR20.
Note: this is a fairly long video so if you want to skip to the engine teardown, use the Chapter markers below. Enjoy:)

Just talking 4 Cylinders and 2 Liters which is best overall. K20 or SR20?
Rocker Arm Stoppers are a pretty controversial topic. I would much rather suggest looking into dual guide mod first. It really helps with the rocker issue.
Exactly, dual guide mod, stronger valve springs, and a softer fuel cut limiter, as well solid lifters don’t hurt either. Rocker arm stoppers do not stop rocker arms from falling off and when they do… it does damage!
Or do the neo vvl head swap
Ask Okichan from Yashio factory in Japan if he recommends rocker stoppers😂. Answer is no and he's the Sr God.
Rocker stoppers …. errrrrr NO, they are such a joke. If you look at the engineering and how the valve trains works they cant do shit :/ they dont actively hold the rockers in place. If a rocker wants to jump off, it will and most cases the “stopper” simply jams the rocker arm cause it to smash or bend a valve.

9:11 - Thanks for the great, detail-packed video and cheers for the engine building course mention team! - Taz.
^^ Can confirm it's well worth doing:)
thoughts on rocker arm stoppers?
i remember that hpa mentions the sr20 a lot in their courses as being really sensitive on the limiter. if you're using rpm limit launch control strategies, you can use fuel cut instead of ignition cut. i guess maybe the boost build up at launch won't be as good (depending on the turbo size and boost aims) but destroying the engines also isn't very pleasing
Sr20's are fantastic. They can take a lot of abuse, especially at stock or close to stock power levels. When people start pushing them at power levels they were never designed for they have issues. I have a black top sr20det and a sr20de, the only thing ive had "fail" is a timing chain tensioner on the sr20de that wouldnt hold oil over night so the chain would slap on startup. I think people have to remember they arent new engines anymore.
It just sucks now because parts are taxed up the ass and as an American (who btw loves this motor) it’s really hard to justify spending 5k (low end for notchtop prices in North America) on motor and 5k more to build it only to reach
Love these teardowns, I learn so much!
Great shots, great editing, and fantastic explanations
Great video Scott. Crazy to thing we might see new SR20 long motors available again :D
I bought my first SR20 in 2004. It was already fairly old back then. Mine had various oil leaks and gasket issues. I cannot believe people are still running them 20 years later!
Fantastic engine when looked after.
Because the one I'm running today was only nearing on two years old then
Same. I havnt looked at car stuff in a decade. Surprised an SR20 is still talked about. From what I understand ppl are swapping Honda K20s now since there are so many to salvage from domestically, and are better designed.
I still daily drive my 308k km (approx 191k miles) SR20 wich is covered by oil (rust prevention?)👍
I have a forged black top with 1200 miles on it in an s13 disco, love it.
I've been looking forward to an episode covering the SR20 and I'm stoked it's here
Love the knowledge and insight in these videos. 22 years of S15 joy 🤩 and loving every minute
Hello ”Haltech”! Thank you for showing us such a wonderful video! I feel so happy! I'm looking forward to your next work! Have a nice day!
Great video!! Thanks for all the detail
Great episode. Nice work team
Hooray new engine review! ❤️
The first time i ever saw the SR20 it was in an E30 & I'll never forget it
weee i got one
I seen one in an old Nissan hardbody truck.. I’m not sure what year but it was sweet, probably early/mid 90’s, it was slammed and had big chunky tires with the right amount of camber, and it had wide body fenders. It was stancey but still functional if that makes sense.
The SR in the GTI-R was unique because it had quad throttle bodies
In the video he said that early SR20DET engines had a t25 turbo, but that's not accurate because in the GTI-R it used a t28 turbo.
He was referring to the S13 engine, in the context of the front engine - rear wheel drive config. But yes, you are correct the GTiR used a number of different components in the engine, turbo being one of them.
@@haltech That turbo worked very well in the GTI-R. It spooled quicker than the smaller t25 in the rps13 setup. Do you know why that would be? Is it because the GTI-R had a shorter charge pipe from having a top-mount intercooler, wheres the rps13 has a side-mount intercooler with a longer charge pipe?
@@beachforestmountain4269 GTiR variant had a surprisingly large amount of differences. It runs lower static compression (same pistons, but no quench pad on the combustion chamber), solid lifters / different cam profile, and runs different base ignition timing, as well as the ITB setup. Would be hard to say how each change contributes to performance
@@Sigfader180 Thanks. My old mate got the first GTI-R that arrived in New Zealand, he imported it himself before anyone had even heard of them. It was super fast back in those days. It had an exhaust and air filter, but not sure what boost it was running. I think they ran 12 psi standard, if I remember correctly. Whereas the sr20det in my rps13 180sx was running about 6 to 7 psi standard.
I nerd out on Tuning Fork's videos.
Hehe, don't we all...
This is fantastic!!! So detailed! Thank you!! 🎉
love these videos mate , very good job
Here in the uk, we call the s14/s15 Sr20det a “bent-cam” and the s13 180sx “straight-cam” 👍🏻
Great video and thank you for the in-depth tear down.
I’ve owned my SR for coming up to 15 years now and it’s not missed a beat and is always a joy to drive, though seeing another one on the road is getting rarer.
I think I've had mine for about that long too. One engine, neve missed a beat. Probably helps that I kept it stock, but even like that it's still a tonne of fun for something that only gets driven fairly rarely
@@AnonyDave I've got mine running Stage 1a at just about 270bhp and for a daily use it is perfectly adequate.
At the time of the upgrade I thought about going Stage 2 but couldn't really justify all the extra upgrades required.
Excellent video. Thanks for the tips.
awesome stuff really good video and heaps of detail
Glad you've enjoyed it.
thanks for the video. Learnt more about my motor in 26mins than all my years trolling forums
great video!
Love haltech you guys rock!! Once I get my money up im having my car tuned with all your products!
Great video, about a year a ago I picked up a 1996 200sx se-r and even though she's at 250,000 miles still runs strong. Only thing I've done to her is a water pump and timing kit. Getting ready to start playing more inside that engine, and this has been a pretty comprehensive video for me to work off of. Thanks!
Rad little car!!
Great video! Sr20 is a diamond I’ve boosted my front wheel drive Sentra from na to built internals and bigger turbo over the years and she puts a smile on my face every time , she’s a keeper. I still own it today 👍
Are you from South Africa? We love fitting the VE into the Sentra
Finally. What I’ve been waiting for
When you said In the bin at the end, I was waiting for Marty's face to pop up 😂😂
TOASTIE!
I had two of these, and i agree. Lovely pull, lovely exhaust note.
Lucky enough I have a Nismo tuned ECU in mine and it’s got a soft limiter setting that has been awesome. Definitely does feel like it has a fuel cut within that setting buts it’s more or less rocket proofed the SR, it’s just nice hits the limiter your feel a very soft bounce and then you feel like you’ve lost power if you don’t shift. Guess they knew of the issue and addressed it with the ECU.
Rocker arms stoppers have only ever broken more stuff when the arm DOES try to fling loose compared to when it just pops out usually.
Very much recommend not to use rocker arm stoppers and to correctly measure your intake shim heights to level the rockers (precision shims make different height guides if you feel the need to do dual guide shims) and fit a new spring oe spring or aftermarket upgraded spring.
Ideally, new lifters as well but these in conjunction with a soft ignition cut should help avoid breaking any arms.
Wow, this man here doubled down on the rocker arm stoppers. Wow, just wow.
This content is really cool it would be nice to talk about other JDM brands too

My first engine. My first car Sentra SE-R. How I judge all the engines in the cars I drive after that. Thanks for the video!
VW/Audi 1.8T from the same era was awesome - so much power so easily. Above the Japanese 2.0’s and Aussie V8’s of the day.
Had one for 20 years, running 27psi and never had an oil leak or any issue
This was awesome! Do the GOAT'ed supersonic trumpet VQ Engine next please. 😁😁🎺🎺
A video on the Fj20det is a must now that youve done a sr20det video.
What are those?
It was a good engine for its time and I had 2 cars with 1.8 and 2L variations. I now have a newer model with the HR-series and its quite an upgrade tech wise.
Oh wow, for a brief moment I thought this was one of those videos which just reads the wikipedia page of said engine, because of the thumbnail. But it was actually an interesting video from haltec with tuning fork
Man this brings me back to high school where me and my friends had all these plans with these engines
We're you gonna go to Race Wars?
I ran a n/a roller rocker sr20de in a n15 chassis up to 192whp. 8.5k redline. Awesome.
First witnessed this beauty's power in my buddy's GTI-r wow😂😮
Love your k series video and showed my friend who loves the srt-4 dodge neon, if you’d be interested in doing one for those! Much love!
Here in the US, we only got the FWD SR20DE. It only came in two cars, the Sentra SE-R and Infiniti G20(A rebadged Primera GT). :(
Sucks to be American 🤣
the K series wasnt debuted until 2001. but we still had the legendary B18C and F20C from honda in the 90s
had a redtop.. really didnt see anything better than the 3sgte and i loved that motor still have it in my FWD AE92 converted
AE92's are so slept on, body style gives me big Rx7 FC vibes
The Nissan Silvia's heart
I had a built red top with a normal oil pan and had oil pickup issue….luckily my buddy new right away after first start up and no damage was done😅
Is there any video comparing all the modern/semi-modern inline 4s? As in, taking into account all aspects. Stock internals, stock head efficiency, ported head efficiency, aftermarket parts availability for beefier stuff, stock block limits, sleeving cost, engine weight, junkyard pull-ability, ease of converting say, a high compression hybrid/Atkinson variant into a high-performance variant, engine swap kit availability for various chassis and transmissions, etc?
I'd really like to see a deep dive on K series vs Ecotec vs Duratec vs SR vs 4G vs 2AR, etc. And TBH same for V6s, too. We need more V6 builds and good V6s in the world. Not every engine bay can fit an inline 6 (especially of substantial displacement) and not everybody can accept the limits of a 4-cylinder nor does that same crowd necessarily want the liability, complexity, and either excess power or underutilization of boost that an 8-cylinder provides.
Not to mention, the inline 6s of old are heavy iron ordeals that are legit worse than an LS engine, and the modern inline 6s? Expensive and rare. Except for the Vortec 4200 or OM606, but then we're back to the "too long" part.
Rocker arm stoppers are the worst.
Back in 1998 i came up with the dual grooved shimmed setup. You will need to machine the rocker arm to get this setup done.
The best way to stabilize the SR head setup is. High pressure VE oil pump this keeps the lifters less likelyto colapsr, 98 and newer roller rocker SR hydraulic lifters which have the larger oil inlet hole and smaller top exit hole, aftermarket springs and the dual guide rocker arm setup.
Nice youtube video. I have been working on SRs since 1992.
Thank you Im new Sub :)
A video about the CA18DET would be great
So my built S15 did make 474kw@wheels on 32 pound. Was a great car
Had a sr20det 1992 bluebird U13 manual.Torquey engine,went well.
There’s also another engine that’s STILL not on anybody’s radar; the venerable KA24E/DE. Monster engines when you dig into them.
Often laughed at as being a "truck motor'.
But those who know, know.
Would rather have a KA24DET than a spun bearing. XD
I do not recommend using “Rocker Arm Stoppers”. If you throw an arm it will do more harm!
Completely agree, It completely destroyed my head when I threw rockers with the stoppers on. Took them off and it just pops out, no biggie
The Opel C20XE was another monster of an engine from the 90`s...
Forget rocket arm stoppers. By now most people should know about the dual guide shim mod.
Shimmy shimmy yay shimmy yay gimme the Mic so I can take it away
@@nolesy34 😆😆
I got the most basic and neutered version of this engine and it still amazes me to this day
Planning to put a sr20det in my Nissan avenir🙏
What about the early sr20’s NA’s in the SSS pulsars. ?😊
I've been waiting...
Wow they made it so easy now a day with plug and play ECU then back in the day when i put in my first sr20 in my s13 like 20 years ago it was tough back then but now it seem easier now a day.
K series came out in 2001 not quite the 90s but close enough ❤❤❤
Uhh, Honda's K series engines came to market in the 2000's. Not the 90's.
We got the SR20DE altima here in the Philippines, the US got also the SR20DE on the B13 and the B13 GT-S got the SR18DE.. which was a shame, i wished for the SR powered B13 here in the Philippines but we got a GA13DS, GA14DS, GA15DE, and GA16DE B13/B14
11:30 Funfact, the CA18ET out of the S12 had sensor there, they went cheap for the S13 onwards....
A cammy SR20 also happen to sound really good.
Rather than a fuel cut rev limit, can the Haltech do a soft limit with a DBW throttle body instead?
Mine had had 500k on it before I sold it, didn't burn a drop and a smooth torque curve, went hard for a NA stock. n15 sss
What do you guys think about converting the rocker arm bolts to studs? I heard they do this in Japan
i would love one of these for the 16v 4AGE
YES supercharged little rockets
i had a sentra ser with a sr20 na super fun
Rocker stoppers do such a good job at keeping the rocker arm in place the arm breaks because they are fragile. You cant stop it from spitting rocker arms its fair easier to fix with out rockers stoppers. If it spits and arm worth out a stoppers its rare is breaks and cant be fixed easy. Stoppers will nearly 100% of the time break a broken arm when it happens. Taper the torque curve at the top of the rpm, soft limiter and 2 step or antilag if you got the time to be re fitting the rocker arms. If you are building making both shims locater shims makes a better difference then stoppers. Thats my 2 cents
Correct valve springs and correctly shimmed to keep the rocker flat on the cam is also going to massively help stop throwing rockers.
Campaigned an SR20 and later SR20DET for nearly a decade in wheel to wheel, and have run one for decades in Offroad stuff. Made 462whp in a street car, revved the racecar to 8,000rpm, etc.
Only time I ever chucked a rocker arm was when my buddy misshifted from 3rd to 2nd. Quality valve springs and matching cam (I only run JWT) and you’ll be fine.
My rocker arms still broke even tho i had no rocker arm stopper. But if i had one it wouldve probably jammed the valves open and bent a valve . New rocker arm was 60-70bucks and an hour of work . Ditch those rocker arm stoppers they really make it worse 👍🏾
I was half way through writing that quote till it came up 🤣🤣🇬🇧🇬🇧
What exactly is the website for the SR20DET Creat Engine that you guys talked about on this video
Sr20det 4 Life
@7:23 Rocker Arm stoppers are a bad idea. They won’t stop rocker arms for falling. But it will guarantee that the rocker arms get wedged between the camshaft lifters, shredding them into pieces. Where without rocker arm stoppers there is a small chance the rocker arm just falls off.
Still have my redtop, but needs a tune to get running
We need a what's so special on the Honda B - series
Let’s see a comparison to the earlier FJ20et engine. 😁
A jet engine?
I swapped an sr20det into my 89 sentra. If it had wings it would've taken flight. Super fast lil car after the swap
I wish the USA got a 240SX bodied SR with turbo. Instead we got stuck with that passenger 2.4L that was shared with the Stanza.
So is the sr20det the same motor as the N/A Version that was found in the sentra and some infinitis?
Jimmy Oakes has a yellow S15 SR20DET with NEO head 😎😎
Was planning on stripping my motor back and changing the timing chain, will this require the motor to come out as stated the pan and lower sump needs to come off is this true? Or will I be able to change it in the vehicle
can you use the fwd version in a rwd application
So, is there any difference between the actual blocks from s13/14 to s15? If I got an s13 block could I just put s15 parts in it?
TBH I never liked to drive my car until I got an aftermarket ecu, 350z coils and ID850cc injectors. I hated the maf and its problems.
That applies to just about any car though; modded car > stock car:)
@@haltech I had a 2jz S13 but that's sums it up, maf car with apexi done me great.
My nissan lec b13 yr 1996 with sr20det still the best
What? no comment on the main bearing cap girdle? Then again it's not like it's a k motor. Can oil squirters be easily fitted to an N A engine? I have a Serena van one with rear distributor and rear facing throttle body . Will that work in a longitudinal application?
SR20 GODS MOTOR
Could you guys do one on the Mercedes M104
Prior to this video, I knew very little about the SR20, beyond the basics - 2.0L, dual overhead cam, etc.
This has been really enlightening!
Any chance of doing a similar video for the 3SGE/3SGTE? :)
Will a vvt head fit on a straight cam block?
VE and 20v are the most reliable and most powerful power trains of Nissan, the DET's are old and with a weak bottom end :).
Genesis 1:3,4 and 5 “…and on the eighth day God created SR20, and he saw that it was good…reeeeeeeeal good”
I love the VET model or a fwd head on rwd block
