There’s something I noticed that offenders say when “apologizing”, and it’s that they’re sorry for “what happened”, never sorry for “what they did”. That speaks volumes to me.

I feel the exact as you. For a slight moment in his apology he truly seemed genuine, and he very well may be, but it doesn't take back the fact that Maddie's family is sentenced to life without Maddie. A far worse sentence in my opinion. They were completely destroyed his actions. It's amazing how murderers make a list of accomplishments they've completed as a way to get out of prison early. If I were a judge I'd be like, "And there's your reward. You have the opportunities to accomplish these things but the person you murdered, does not. You're staying in prison."

The fact that he had this young girl’s body decomposing under his bed, in his room where he was most likely still sleeping in and was able to say nothing, and elude to nothing until his mother found it is evidence enough for me that he should never be let out of prison. AND the fact that he was out there with his mother searching for a girl he knew was rotting under his bed. If he had any remorse for his actions there’s no way he would have been able to continue to sleep in that room with a body under the bed and simply mask the smell with air freshener, or be able to keep composure and behave normally. If you had empathy or remorse for your actions you would be visibly distraught knowing that you killed the girl you’re helping everyone search for, and you’re sleeping in the bed her body is under. Tory’s parents (mother especially) acts like he didn’t do anything… Like he’s another victim, as if those tapes don’t exist!
He’s got himself convinced he shouldn’t be in prison for murder. It’s my belief that if you refuse to take responsibility for the bad you’ve done, you can never learn and grow from them. Anyone’s first instinct in that situation would’ve been to take her back to her parents, tell them what happened, and let the parents take her to get medical help, not hit her over the head to make her stop crying and screaming. My girls were younger than her and I could not imagine the horror and sadness her family felt.
I always thought it was odd that she was found partially clothed but they could not find evidence of any "S.A." done to her. Like many others in the comments, I agree that Josh's apology seemed to focus more on how the crime has impacted HIM; his feelings of hopelessness and desperation. IMO, his regret and remorse was for himself more than Maddie and her family. If we have learned anything from true crime, it is the rate of re-offending criminals, particularly with crimes that are sexual in nature. When it comes to crimes as horrific as this, recidivism and it's direct impact on public safety has to be a key goal of the criminal justice system.

I remember this case like it just happened yesterday. I grew up in Jacksonville, and it was all over the news. People from everywhere in the city came to search for Maddie. Everyone thought it was that SA offender for a while. I’m the same age as josh and I had friends who knew him. It was a shock to kids who knew him. All so tragic, but honestly this is a case where the defendant actually got the minimum appropriate charge and sentence. Nowadays, judges look at these young boys and try to keep them from serving life. Also, his mom did the right thing to call the cops rather than hide evidence like some scummy mummies have been doing lately. RIP Maddie

When I listened to his apology I actually did feel some empathy for him and thought perhaps he had been rehabilitated and could go back into society one day. However, as it went on I realised that his "apology" was mainly focused upon himself, what he had achieved for himself, albeit behind bars, his remorse and less about Maddy and her family. Then there is the fact that he has never told the whole truth of what he did to innocent and beautiful little Maddy. In my opinion I don't think he would re-offend but until he explains everything that he did to her, he should remain in prison.

This a reminiscent story for me at the age of 10. I went to school and church with the sister and brother of this 16 year old boy, and at 54, I am still traumatized by it this story. My brothers went to School and Scouts with both brothers where the Dad was the Scout leader and my father knew him. A little 4 year old ( same age as my sister ) wearing a pink bathing her mother just bought her for her birthday, and she was out front with an older sister and friends. The sister and friends went off to do something else and this left the 4 year old out front by her self. She was last seen on a skateboard in front of her house. My Uncle was Chief of police at the time. The parents and neighbors organized a search and everyone in town was out searching. NOTHING like this happen in our town. No one locked their doors and everyone knew everyone. Their was a team of police and investigators staked out in the next door neighbors house. The families were close. I remember looking for this girl at age 10, in every nook and cranny around where I lived, afraid to find her. I didn't live very close to her house, but I looked just the same. She was gone roughly a week, maybe less. When she was found, the next door neighbor ( father ) was talking to my Uncle, and they smelled this horrible odor coming from a box and the Dads words were..I tell these kids all the time to make sure the trash goes down the yard where the trash man picks it up. But by then, they could not help but to be curious about what was in the box because of the foul pungent odor. Much to there shock, they opened the box where a trash bag lay, actually 1 bag inside another, and the odor was coming from the bag. When they opened it, there lay the naked body of this precious 4 year old. Stangled and sexually assaulted. Her bathing suit was later found in the 16 year olds room. He got 8 years only. I felt bad for the family as to being ostracized by the town. The day of the funeral, the child's family welcomed the family to attend the funeral, but they declined because it would get chaotic from the people in town and at the funeral and they deserved their time of mourning with out all that would come with their attendance. There was a lynch mob outside the police headquarters wanting to exact their own justice. This is such a sad story. I remember the sister telling me her brother was innocent , to which I did not reply to. I can't imagine how hard it had been on her. The 16 year olds family were very good people, and were very close to the victims family, and lived right next door.
I don't know how to feel about minors getting life sentences, but 8 years for such a horrific and brutal murder of an innocent 4 year old angers me. I feel for both families.. the boys family didn't do it.. he did, and they paid the price. Of course, as their son, they too fought. But then I think of the little girls family... they did not retaliate, but even invite them to the child's funeral.. but everyone had their lives turned upside down and HE got a measly 8 years!!

His apology was seemingly heartfelt and for him to be able to gain some comfort that he apologized is good for him and perhaps the parents . It doesn’t excuse the fact that he murdered this child and the suffering and horror she must have gone through.

However as a parent who has lost a baby girl, I can attest to the unbelievable pain that brings a parent, and something that one never truly heals from. I remember when I was in my 20s my late lovely Mom would tell me "just wait..when you are in your 30s & older you will find that life goes by in the blink of an eye"..being in my 20s I didn't take her
comments that serious but trust me..amazing how TRUE those words were/are...doesn't seem real how fast a year goes by...agree 110% with Christina's opening comments :)

Heard this story before, but because I love watching you I had you listen again, such a sad case, R.I.P Maddie, she had her whole life infront of her and by someone she saw as a friend , truly deceiving and unbelievable 😔💔🙏🏾 I'm glad his mum didn't cover up for him! That's how parenting should be, because I couldn't imagine calling the police on my own child for murder, my heart goes out to both sides of the family, I cannot imagine how the mum felt finding her and maddie's parents for finding out 💔 I hope he never gets out of prison!

So to hear everything that you have is really hitting my heart bad ….I wonder how many of us only know the story I know. Wow. Just wow. I’m literally speechless. Thank You Christina. ♥️

The whole town Wasn't. Born and raised there and still live there. I was there when this happened. This is why I keep in eye on the kids and not let them just wonder around but I wouldn't say I was particularly terrified at every single thing that happens here.

This is the one that stuck with me, I was a teenager myself when I first heard it and it disturbed me so much... thank you for covering this. I always appreciate you mentioning how children exposed to explicit media have changes in their brains and it's unhealthy. Too many parents nowdays think nothing is a big deal to expose kids to. They don't protect their kids innocence the best they can, just because the world wants to steal kids innocence as fast as possible, the parents end up saying "they're gonna do it/see it anyways might as well be at home" and it saddens me. Especially when the parent is either careless or absolutely abusing the kids by exposing them to it themselves which is sick and disgusting. I always say "never judge a parent with kids older than your, or with more kids than you" because you really don't know in most cases how those changes in life will change you. But I can say; as a parent of late teens and early 20s, having both blood and adopted children alike. Adopted children who had hard upbringings before they came home to me, it's NOT that hard to be a diligent parent and care about letting kids just be kids. It's not hard to not expose them to filth even if they've been raised around it for years. So lazy parenting and lackadaisical parenting really saddens me and can disgust me. Because it's the kids who are hurt, not the parent. It's the kids who spend their life recovering or ending up in jail. Now some kids will do whatever and it's not the parents fault at all, but I'm only talking about the parents that don't try at all. I commend the boy's mom for getting help and letting her son face the consequences of his actions.
I didn't know how to feel about if he should have been given a chance or not actually. That was hard for me. He was 14 so he DEFINITELY knew exactly what he was doing and lying and downplaying what he did proved it. If he didn't realize it was wrong he would have told the truth not understanding why hurting a little girl was wrong, but he lied. He knew. I do believe most people can change and grow even hardened criminals, outside of pedophiles (they never change). But reading the comments about all the people that live in the area and were around when it happened. Plus the girl's mom worrying for her older daughter that he was obsessed with, yeah I understand why they aren't letting him out or giving him a chance. Hopefully he does grow in prison somehow and becomes a better person, or speaks openly against what he did for others to hear. Other than that, it's sad for his mom, but hopefully she finds peace in knowing she did what she could to help him now it's up to him to change. I feel so sick for the little girl's family and friend's and community. It's heartbreaking. There are no words. 🤍

I remember being a child when this happened. It has honestly haunted me my entire life. My room was just painted when I heard my mother talking of this when it came on the news. It was such a hard thing to get through and stop imaging about it. I hated the smell of fresh paint for many years of my life because it reminded me of this girl. Everyone kept saying smell and I remembered the paint. I was really young I'm 35. I am much older now and I have a better control over my thoughts. I like to listen to your research to try to understand the minds of horrible people to protect my own family. I just don't understand how a person or child could be so weak and hurt another child. If that was my baby, my niece, or my sister. I couldn't watch him go free. Whatever he did was evil, and I couldn't trust anyone would be safe with him living in the US experiencing life and someone's baby will never experienced it because he took that from her. I don't even like to think about what will happen to his soul. But whatever happened that night had such a strong energy across the world. I am not stupid I hope the US isn't either. His mother is probably just as confused because she lost apart of her that day too. It's common that victims seek the abuser in domestic violence for some crazy mental reason. She also I am sure feels bad for him because how could anyone want to ever love him. She would definitely be the only one. He is a monster as a teen which is a huge deal. Now institutionalized! Prison affects people as you know. So try to imagine any of his thoughts tastes like vomit. I feel strongly about this case because the sleepiness nights I had worried sick about another child as a child is unforgettable. i will go on and on and on. Just wanted to make it clear the judge made the right logically decision.

I absolutely know how bad this was and the terrible cost of what he did. I have actually had this loss in my own family. But knowing he was 14 when this happened and seeing and listening to him. I literally cried. How could you ever express the apology or the guilt or the anything that’s in his heart or mind now as a grown man. It’s awful. I feel awful for his pain and the families pain too
