Toyota GR Yaris Origin: Why The Brand Developed It

Second, third, fourth, through the gears - and in what seems like the blink of an eye, we’re at the other end of what looked like a lengthy straightaway. As this purpose-made rally car eats up the pavement, I’m impressed by the sheer torque, but the aggression is also something to behold. This is state-of-the-art rallying and Toyota’s latest competition version of the already spectacular top-of-the-line Yaris.
However, you may not realize that this GR Yaris Rally2 represents the endgame for Toyota’s product design team. The GR Yaris that has been on sale in showrooms for a couple of years was actually a rally car-in-waiting. It’s an unusual approach for a manufacturer to create a commercially available rally derivative BEFORE rolling out the actual rally version. Most companies do this the other way around, but for Toyota, there’s certainly a method in their madness.
So, we traveled to one of Britain’s stately homes to watch the unveiling of the GR Yaris Rally2, to see what it felt like on board and to see how it compares to the hot hatch itself.
