  • Dave has run the Tusk Terrabite's on his Maverick Sport XRC for quite some time. He's put plety of miles on them in the rocks but wanted something a little more. The Maxis Rockzilla's have developed a reputation for being an AWESOME rock crawling tire. In this video, Dave compares his new Rockzilla's to the Tusk terribite's he has been running. So which one is better in the rocks? Watch the vid to find out!

I'm with you on the composting toilet rant. THey have these up in the U.P. of Michigan where we visit a lot. They work great if folks use them properly. If they turn them into trash cans, the park services will remove them and hose us all over. Good rant my friend! I am very interested in the Terras for my woods and loose rock riding. I get into a little mud, but I don't try to sink it because I hate cleaning it up! LOL!

My buddy and I upgraded from modded 50" class Can-Am MavT cars to 64" class MavS Xrc (same model year as Dave's) late last summer. Other than basic comfort/convenience accessories, our first mods were replacing OEM 30x10-14 Maxxis Liberty with 32x10-14 Maxxis Carnivore due to woeful lack of directional steering control with Liberty in the Arizona mountain terrain we run. We achieved objectives with Carnivore, yet both flatted tires 2 days apart within the first 200 miles during routine trail inspection runs. Since then in same terrain, no more flats but tires are showing substantial wear from relatively rough degraded granite shelf rock common here. From that for me at least, Rockzilla won't be next replacement due to Maxxis stated: "soft rock crawling tread" compound. I/we cover a lot of off-pavement miles per year, thus finding optimal balance of traction and steering control vs flat potential with open lug pattern and/or soft durometer compound tires will dictate what we choose.
Most of those aspects have been outlined in various Maverick Forums thread topics (same user name), including this specific thread topic which might be of interest to Sport X-series 64" class variants:

You are 100% spot on with your rant! Thumbs up to you for including that in this video. I found that my 32" BFG KM3's were a very good tire on the slick rock in Moab, and they actually measure close to 32". With the weight of my KRX sitting on them, at 14 psi they measured 31-5/8". I run them at 10 psi on a regular basis. That seems to be their happy place. I have some videos from Moab where my buddy was in his '20 XP4 1000 with Terrabites. Between the tires and different machines, there was a noticeable difference. I know it's kind of cheating being in the KRX, but the KM3's had better sidewall flex and better grip. You better hope Garrett doesn't put on a set... LOL

@@DerangedOffRoad I've heard they wear very well on the streets. I believe it. I can't/don't ride on the streets here in Commyrado, but the 150 miles or so out in Moab last fall on the slick rock had no effect on them. They did not have the "took a belt sander to them" look that every other tire I've run out there has had. The rest of the miles have been in the jagged granite in the Rocky Mountains. I have a little over 500 miles on them with pretty much no visible wear other than slightly rounded edges on the lugs. I don't have a tread depth gauge, just my eyeballs, but other than the lug edges, they looked about like my brand new spare I mounted up. Kind of a strange tire. The rubber feels kind of soft, and grips like it's a soft compound, but they don't wear??? The sidewalls are also somehow strangely flexible and super tough all at the same time. BFG knows how to build an off-road tire. My 32-10-15 weighed in at 43 lbs per tire. Not too bad for a 32" steel belted radial.

I have the Terrabites on my 21' 850 Sportsman, I personally LOVE them. They can take a beating on large rock trails and are awesome in mud. The tread between these two you're testing are not similar at all. The terra's are more of a truck mud type tire. Flat all terrain type tires with more contact patch would be better on slick rock.

Very interesting watching the Zillas side wall flex and conform to the rock. That and the sticky compound make it easy to see why that tire hooks up so well. It would be interesting to see how a 32” Maxxis Liberty would work. It seems to be fairly soft and compliant. My top choices for new tires for my XP4 are the Terrabyte or the Liberty because I ride only about 2.7% on rocks. 🤣🤣 The Arisun I currently have rides like concrete blocks at anything over 10 psi. I’m really ready for some better comfort.

You want smoother less bouncy, need a rig with a different rear suspension. That's why the KRX and XP1K, X3, etc all have those long rear trailing arms. That double a arm rear suspension bucks WAY more. I love the way your rig looks but I'm not impressed by the suspension. I just watched a video of the new Commander, basically the same rig but with a bed. It bucks like crazy in the rear too.

You're right when it comes to fast paced whoops, the trailing arm suspension in superior. The biggest issue with the Maverick Sport in the rocks is it's wheelbase. 90" isn't ideal. The RZR, KRX and others are longer.
