    History is my second love, after food. And in fact, sometimes I think it might be my first love!
    When I moved to Madrid I fell in love with the city's history. While the Spanish capital may not be the oldest city in Europe, it was much older than New Zealand! And it was full of so many wonderful stories of intrigue, had been the home of so many fascinating people, and the centre of so many dramatic events in Spanish history.
    So in this walking tour - which is based on the tour I designed when I designed Devour Tours' most popular Tapas, Taverns & History Tour - I take you through the history of Madrid, starting at the beginning and right up to the civil war.
    Here are the places we stop:
    1. Plaza de Oriente: Location of Madrid's royal palace and the spot where the city was founded!
    2. Plaza de Ramales: Where Spain's most famous painter - Diego de Velazquez - may be buried!
    3. Calle del Factor: Gorgeous views of the cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Casa del Campo (the old royal hunting grounds, now an enormous public park).
    4. Calle de la Almudena: The admittedly not so impressive remains of an old church. But I love the statue of the Curios Neighbour, and also knowing that this was the former location of a mosque.
    5. Calle de San Nicolás: Love this little hidden corner with Madrid's oldest standing church from the 12th century (and which potentially is the site of a former mosque
    6. Plaza de la Villa: Once the most important square in the city!
    7. Calle del Codo: Love this tiny little hidden street - also the location of the famous cookie nuns!
    8. Plaza Puerta Cerrada: Right at the top of Calle Cava Baja (tapas heaven!), and where the famous motto of Madrid can be read on the walls - "Over water my walls of fire are built."
    9. Plaza Mayor: The city's main historic square - site of inquisition trials, bull fights, fires and the Christmas market.
    10. Puerta del Sol: The people's square! Home of protests, uprisings and New Year's Eve celebrations!
    11. Casa del Abuelo: Amazing garlic prawns, cooked right before your eyes!
    12. Plaza Santa Ana: A gorgeous square surrounded by cafes and bars, and with my favourite statue in Madrid of Federico García Lorca.
    13. Calle Lope de Vega: The final resting place (we think!) of Spain's most famous author - Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote)

    There are some incorrect information. For example, the Royal Palace was last inhabited in 1936 by Manuel Azaña, 2nd president of the 2nd Republic.
    And also there are some quite interesting historical details that are missing. For instance, the sculpture of Felipe IV was casted by Tacca, the math was from Galileo, and the drawing, by non other than Velázquez. About the Tower of Lujanes (9:11), it was used (allegedly) as a state prison for guarding Francis I of France (who was taken prisoner in the battle of Pavía).

    Carlor II does not deserve that derision. He might have looked weird but was certainly not stupid as he put the accounts of his Empire straight, and opposed his crown to be bequeathed on the French monarchy. The Borbons could not believe their luck when the came into his heritage. Spains accounts were in the black, something completely new for the French kings who had gone from one bankrupcy into another for ages.
    All that stuff about the blunders of the Habsburgs is plain propaganda. They managed to keep an empire up for centuries, while the Borbons lost it in a redord time.
    Look at the facts, not at the propaganda. The empire and the golden age of Spain is an achievement of the Austria's Spain. Decadence started with the French.

      Muy cierto Arantxa Pavón, hay mucha Leyenda Negra a ese respecto... date cuenta que los Borbones y los Austrias no se podían ni ver y claro cuándo los Borbones suceden en el trono a los Austrias pues tienen que decir que lo anterior era una porquería, también te digo que los franceses eran nuestros enemigos y siempre han querido hundirnos.. envidia de que ellos nunca fueron imperio y nosotros sí.

    • @brunon.8962
      @brunon.8962 Před 4 lety +3

      Los borbones fueron y son agentes franceses destinados a dinamitar España y que nunca vuelva a superar a Francia a través de la centralización forzosa. La reacción al 1-O es la última prueba de ello.

    • @cinderelladevil1687
      @cinderelladevil1687 Před 4 lety +2

      @@brunon.8962 la respuesta francesa al secesionismo catalan es poner a Valls en Cataluña y refrenar y minar a Ciudadanos q representa la izquierda moderada constitucionalista.
      Si la masoneria es inevitable España deberia fundar ahora mismo la suya propia y desvincularse de la francesa.
      Francia nunca va a tener nada mas q imperios basura como el q explotan ahora mismo en Africa y que nos manda el producto humano de esa explotación a Europa en forma de emigración económica. Es sangrante como se aprovechan de esas pseudocolonias, y es evidente q sus economia es una cochambre que no resistiria prescindir de esa rapiña q se les permite en el continente africano.
      No sé como nadie se atreve a hablar del imperio español con la mugre que tienen escondida debajo de sus moquetas. Las moquetas reluciran, pero la sala huele a muerto.

    • @robert111k
      @robert111k Před 4 lety

      Vamos a ver. Ni Austrias ni Borbones ni leches. Todos son herederos de la dinastía histórica. No es que haya venido nunca nadie de Austria. Simplemente para nosotros es más fácil decir Austria (o sea, nombrar el lugar de procedencia) que decir Habsburg, que es el apellido. Y a Carlos I Habsburg no le tocaron los reinos peninsulares en una tómbola. Los heredó de su madre, Juana de Trastámara. Ah, y Felipe V no fue rey por llamarse Bourbon, sino por que lo designó en su testamente su tío-abuelo Carlos II por ser nieto de su hermana María Teresa, casualmente casada con Luis XIV de Francia, hijo de su tía Ana.

    • @cinderelladevil1687
      @cinderelladevil1687 Před 4 lety +1

      @@robert111k lo nombró Carlos II bajo mucha presión y poco antes de morir tras la desaparición "casual" del heredero que él habia nombrado previamente de la casa de Habsburgo.
      No podemos decir q no fuese legal, pero sí que fue muy marrullero, y que la consecuencia fue la instauración cultural de la leyenda negra del imperio español como si hubiese sido cierta.
      Eso trajo la dinastia Borbon para imponerse. Destruir la autoestima de los españoles denigrando y disminuyendo sus logros historicos. Los borbones han sido una peste para España. Los borbones y sus pelotilleros españoles.

    Hola James, me gustan mucho tus vídeos, pero te has quedado corto con la descripción de lo que fue para España y para Europa este gran almirante y estratega. Este hombre comandó 30 galeras de (Nápoles), se había convertido en hombre de confianza de Don Juan. En esta batalla de Lepanto se unió a parte de España, el Papado, la República de Venecia, Toscana, Génova y Saboya. Don Juan de Austria era el jefe de los nuestros. La flota reunida por la llamada Santa Liga estaba compuesta por más de doscientas galeras. En Lepanto, la actuación de Bazán fue decisiva. La batalla de Lepanto (1571) fue una batalla muy importante para toda Europa fue una batalla contra los turcos que era el imperio más fuerte de oriente y querían invadir Europa a través del sur de Italia. En esta batalla también luchó Miguel de Cervantes.. fue capturado por los turcos y llevado a la cárcel en Argel.. estuvo en prisión durante 5 años después regresó a España y más tarde empezó a escribir su gran obra "Don Quijote".
    Veo que en el video sólo Mencionas a Álvaro de Bazán para decir que murío antes de la Batalla de la Armada Invencible contra Inglaterra y no sobre su trayectoria como militar nada menos te has olvidado de una de las batallas más importantes (Lepanto). Tengo que decirte que hubo otra batalla contra los ingleses (y esta nunca se cuenta) después de la invencible, inglaterra crecidita fue a nuestras costas y ahí le vapuleamos.. jeje es curioso que solo se hace referencia a la batalla de la invencible por cierto fue una de las tantas batallas que hubo entre ingleses y españoles y además no hubo una gran batalla, si no combates asilados. Los ingleses se limitaron a vigilar y a cañonear desde lejos. La mayor parte de las bajas y los hundimientos no se produjeron en el canal de la Mancha por fuego enemigo, sino en el retorno y debido a las tormentas, apenas se dieron combates, aunque sí un éxito propagandistico jejeje los ingleses tienen buen marketing y sin embargo no se recuerda la batalla (la contra-armada) un año después contra los ingleses en las costas cantábricas, esa sí que fue una gran batalla y un gran fracaso para los ingleses.
    La Inquisición hay un libro muy bueno sobre este tema "Juicio a la Inquisición española" de Jean Dumont.. hay mucho mito y falsedad sobre la Española. La española fue mucho más garantista con los reos que otras como la de Inglaterra, Suiza o Alemania.
    Saludos!

      La leyenda negra nos sigue denigrando. Ganaron la guerra propagandista. La ganaron. Lo peor es que los " libertadores" hispanos la aprovecharon para sus intereses y se la inculcaron desde todos los ángulos a sus " libertados" Y no sólo eso,sino que acá cierta intelectualidad ,siempre muy crítica ( lo.cual puede ser eficaz y lógico) ,la asumió en una constante flagelación pública . Esa identificación con la leyenda negra por una parte de la izquierda española le ha hecho bastante mal a las izquierdas y ,a nuestra autoestima como.españoles,y por lo tanto malo para España.

    Wonderful tour in such a short period of time, and did I hear Yoli in the background. James, your enthusiasm is contagious, and your knowledge of Spain is amazing. This must be reincarnation at its best! Thank you for sharing, see you soon.

    Hi James & Yoly!!! My husband and I are planning a trip to Spain in April and we have been watching all your videos in preparation! My husband has never been before so he was nervous about the food there, but after watching your videos he gets a sense of what to expect and now he can’t wait to try it all!! Every food & tour video (like this one) I make notes so we can make sure to visit!! Thank you so much for all the great tips! We are huge fans!!

    Spent a week in Madrid, ending the day before Thanksgiving. Caught myself looking for me in the background of Plaza del Sol and a few other places. Enjoyed the crowds watching the street performers there. Now I have a few new, old places to see on my next visit. Merry Christmas.

    My friends and I took your devour tour while in Madrid. The history, scenery, and group was awesome! We all became friends by the end and end up hanging out all night and even stumbled upon a Féria! I’ll never forget that day, thanks for the memories!
