Upside Down Stalactite Terrarium

  • Back with another terrarium build! In this one I make something I've been thinking about for awhile, an upside down stalagmite terrarium. I think it turned out really well. What do you think?
    You may be curious about the longevity of something like this. Like I said in the video, it's a similar concept to the millipede mountain terrarium. With appropriate plants it will last just as long as any other terrarium (indefinitely).
    Check out my terrarium builds playlist to see what else is possible with this art form!

    This turned out cool. It stemmed an idea though. It could be interesting to make a ‘cave’ terrarium where you do stalagmites and stalagtites in a larger container. Covering the top back and bottom, or doing a corner setup and covering two sides. Then for water, you could get a weak stream to slowly drip down the features on the top to the bottom. Just throwing around ideas

    I LOVE your videos. You have awakened a new passion in me over night. I sell plants for a living and i keep reptiles and somehow never got lost in vivarium art and really setting up super natural enclosures for my pets. I was looking for diy info on how to set up a pixie frog aquarium and ran across both your pixie frog builds. That was Friday. Since then i have binged watched all your videos in one day, ordered, moss, coconut ground, rocks, silicone, etc etc and have cleaned up three old 20 gallon aquariums. You give all the necessary information without being long winded and you refrain from spending 8 minutes talking about yourself. You let your skills do the talking and it’s very impressive. The video quality is superb and content is extremely helpful. Im building a bioactive vivarium this week using your techniques. I think this will be one of many. Thank you! 🙏🏻 ❤️

  • @TaraAndFriends
    @TaraAndFriends Před 3 lety

    It's fantastic, but I think it would potentially look even better with something super small on the bottom, like just by putting some extra partially-crushed lava rock on the bottom, and filling it with a bit of water to create a water reservoir and make the bottom look less empty. You could also ad a few really small peices of lava rock around the top, as well.
    Also, Tanner, you are absolutely phenomenal at what you do, and have inspired me to create an open succulent terrarium that died, then a paludarium that failed, and finally, I am now doing things the right way, collecting bark, wood, rocks, and finding stuff online from Josh's Frogs, and Black Jungle Exotics. You are an astoundingly inspiring person with an absolutely amazing eye for nature and detail. I also can't wait to see what you do with your 300-something gallon tank, I already saw the background being put in, and I am waiting anxiously to see the finishing of such a gigantic project. Thanks for the inspiration I needed while in my darkest hours.

    Ingenious stalactite! I think it needs some water in the bottom to keep moisture up, maybe charcoal, coco-fibre and moss? Or some small uneven stalagmites surrounding a small circular cave pond under the point.

  • @lambofsquirrel
    @lambofsquirrel Před 3 lety

    For critters, I think you should add some black sand/gravel to the bottom of the bottle. So the bugs can crawl back up, either put a skinny fancy piece of root driftwood that will spiral up and touch the rocks, or have several pieces of creeping fig reach down to the sand.

    Great idea. What I'm missing is a slow drip of water coming from the stalactite. Or even better, a taller container that you could have a stalagmite under the stalactite. A small pool of water at the bottom to house a super tiny pump, maybe a couple shrimp and it would look like a proper cave.

    There is so much mystery in this terrarium, the distance from the bottom is just right. Stunning!
    For the first time, I think I disagree with a tiny aesthetic choice! The brass was a change of pace and contrasted nicely with the dark matte of the volcanic rock. The cork texture gets dominated by the volcanic texture.

  • @2KXMKR

    I love this design, but I have to say; That would look absolutely phenomenal as an aquarium with some mountain minnows swimming around that rock formation. It really wouldn't be that difficult to make a simple DIY trickle filter to sit on top of the lid either. All you'd need is a feeding hole in the lid and it would never have to be opened because water changes could be done from the filter on top.

    I love this idea and the rock structure you've built is incredible! My only critique would be that the bottom still feels too open. Even just a little mound of that rock dust would really round out the design. Stalagmites drip and create stalactites. It would make sense there'd be something below the point. As always, amazing work Tanner.

    Cool build. This may just happen naturally- but since the water is normally hidden underneath the substrate in a more traditional setup- it'd be cool to take advantage of it being visible! Show off a small reservoir of water at the bottom that will ripple when it drips off the stalactite.. perhaps even a thin layer of sand, would add to the already zen vibes.
