WARNING! Bug Holes Ahead - Wood Turning

- I received this Maple piece, along with another wood, from a viewer. The other was the reason for the viewer to send me the pieces but upon seeing this piece, I had to turn it, first! There is just something about the unusual that I cannot resist. Turned out pretty well, all things considered. It did take quite a bit of work to clean all the holes and sand the piece smooth but now it feels good and looks, well, you decide! Finished in shellac.

The price of being an internationally renowned famous wood turner Phil 😄
Phil you're the best 👌
The price of fame, Phil 😂😎 Before watching your videos, I had no idea what wood turning was, but your videos are great fun to watch and are a great way to relax before going to sleep 😴 I guess they would probably also work with high blood pressure 👍🏻😂 Keep it going!
Truthfully, I began to wonder how you managed it 🤔... we all love you still Phil 🥰 and really enjoy your videos, your skill and most of all your humorous running commentaries 😁
@@PBUCKY1969 Very true.
Thanks for not using resin in your work. So many of the turners on UTube use resin for just about any reason instead of highlighting the wood. You are not lazy, you are a bold turner, willing to let the wood tell you what to do.
Thank you for appreciating that, Doug! 😊
I love the resin... something about watching those ribbons fly off of it that's so satisfying...& using resin is far from being lazy...you must not have ever used resin before, because it definitely adds some work to making a piece...& This one would look awesome with some resin in all the holes...
“A Couple Wormholes” ????😅😅❤❤
It's bold to call those that turn different than you lazy. Just because you don't enjoy a style is no reason to belittle. Using resin properly is anything but easy or a shortcut. In this creation it would seal the holes while still leaving them be a focal point.
Resin projects are nice, but I'd rather see the wood speak for itself.
Phil, one of the things(just one of many) is that you and our friend Gary are two of the last breeds that do not have any commercials. I appreciate you(and Gary) for doing this. I know you could do it and maybe offset some costs but I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciates it and thank you. Commercials bug me to no end. Thanks
I recently bought an add blocker. Its a google chrome app. I got 10 days free then it cost me just £20 for a year along with a very good antivirus. The add blocker is the best thing I have ever bought! It blocks ALL adds right across the internet. Highly recommend it!
I appreciate it as well!
@@franksyUK I have never paid for an AdBlocker. Maybe you can't get free ones in the UK? But I don't know why.
I like it!
@@argusfleibeit1165 What free ad blocker do you use ? I assume you are in the USA .,
but maby not .
Thank you
I like the fact that nature provided the uniqueness and you maintained it with your thoughtfulness and experience. Thank you for sharing Phil.
I'm glad you took your time to watch, thank you! 😊
I am a 76 year old lady and I love all unusual pieces that you make. .
I'm so glad, thank you! 😊
I love that you recognize that the art i.s in the wood and the turner just figures out how to expose it.
I love all of these weird little pieces. No one else will have one like it.
Someone finally left the beauty of the piece of wood, thank you!!!
Glad you liked it, Judith! 😊
If anyone dislikes your beautiful bowl they are devoid of aesthetic sensibility . That superb piece of nature and the hand of man is a joy .
It’s almost like looking at a natural sponge. Beautiful (and so glad it didn’t go flying across the shop).
I follow a lot of wood turning channels on youtube. You are the only guy that does a step-by-step running commentary of what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. As a noob to turning, I appreciate that.
You got a new subscriber, Phil.
I really appreciate you honest comment, Van, thank you! I will try to be worthy of your subscription. 😊

Love how the bug holes really add character along with the beautiful wood grain to the bowl. I am a woman in my late fifties that love the beauty of nature and love how you let the wood speak to you & let it decide it's shape drawing out all the natural beauty it has to offer
Wonderful! Thank you, Rayleen! 😊
Love the fact you went with what you had and didn't resort to resin. You should be proud of the finished item. I love it.
Good to know, thank you! 😊
The bug holes make it look AMAZING!!! Being able to see what Mother Nature’s critters are doing inside a tree is really special. You did a beautiful job with it.
I totally agree! Thank you, Catherine! 😊
You are such an artist. Helping Mother Nature.
😊
I think that the holes and cracks that are in the wood give the bowls character and make the piece more visually attractive and beautiful!
We agree, Andy! 😊
This is the first time I’ve watched your videos. I love the way you manipulate the wood from something almost ugly to a beautiful piece. To me wood turning is relaxing to watch. Thank you so much.
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Patti! 😊
I love it, one of a kind piece of art. Who would have thought an old piece of wood with worm holes could be so beautiful. God bless you, Sir.
Thank you very much, Norman! 😊
I think it's gorgeous, the bug holes give it a character!
😊
I love the woodworm holes. It is a natural beauty.
Thanks, Shan! 😊
Love it Phil. That is a one of kind bowl Nature everywhere you look.
That is an awesome bowl. I really enjoy seeing what you can make from what looks like junk. Keep up doing what you do.😀
Worms worked magic on this unique piece. Thanks for your efforts!!
Indeed, Ron! 😊
Your patience while working on a piece is great. There is so much beauty in nature like worm holes and red coloring in the wood. I’m glad you didn’t add resin. Very original.
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
Nice one Phil 👍
Thanks for watching, Andy! 😊
hi andy, i wish you do talking in your videos and give us more information about your masterpiece. but its ok. i still enjoy to watch your channel.
👍
Love the whole piece, Phil.
Nothing to improve on and nothing to dislike.
Love watching your weekly videos. A great escape from this crazy world and a reminder that beauty is all around us if we only just look. 💕
There's natural art in it and I like it a lot...
Thank you, Manuel! 😊
I absolutely love it! It’s beautiful!! I’m a woman and I hate bugs but I love these bug holes ! The work these bugs did on this wood is amazing! Yep I would buy this!🥰
Very cool, thank you! 😊
Absolutely love it, it truly is one of kind. You’ve made worms around the world very happy. ♥️
LOL! That's funny, Maddie! 😊
I really do like it. You brought out the spirit of the piece of wood.
The worm has turned..it's a beauty, love it
Thank you for NOT filling the holes with epoxy.
Finally, wood turning that actually is WOOD turning.
😊
I love it. I love how the bugs left the pattern in the wood.
😊
“Do as I say, not as I do”, got it. I really do like these natural pieces …
Really pretty piece, and interesting to hear you talk about how you were having to work around the holes. Thanks for sharing!
😊
I always enjoy watching you turn the stuff that you turn.
I'm so glad, thank you, David! 😊
Whatever bugs made those holes...they gave it character! I love it! Glad you didn't do it any different! Awesome!
Cool, thank you, Stacey! 😊
just gotta say this is my first video I’ve seen on your channel and I absolutely love your vibe / humor / commentary and the way you explain your process! hope your channel continues to thrive and grow! :)
Thanks for watching! 😊
I was fascinated that it could be turned. You did a marvelous job with this gorgeous art work!
Cool, thank you! 😊
I used to through pieces like that away till now . Now I look for them. Beautiful.
You and me both, Charles! Man, what we were missing! 😊
In the beginning I salivated over the heavy ratio of bug holes to wood. But later on, my mind was blown when he brought out the Sand O' Flex and eased all the outside holes for softer edges on those aforementioned bug holes.
I agree, it really helped the piece, Scott! 😊
Love how you give mini lessons as you work. I'm glad that you did not fill the holes...it adds to the character of the piece. Super job at letting the wood be what it is. Also, I love the colors that came out!
Thanks so much! 😊
A very unique piece that turned out very well. Truly not something you see every day.
Phil, thank you for not ruining the piece with resin.
The honeycomb bowl. That's what I'll call it. I love it, Phil 😊❤
OK, thank you, Georgina! 😊
How can anybody say they do not get blown away by what came out of this piece...the Bugsy Malone key and entrance hall piece, a real don't mess with me heirloom that be around for decades to come.
There you go, David! Thank you! 😊
Phil
I'm an old woodworker and honestly II say this. I love it. Over the years I have done several items similar pieces and I loved them all. Keep up the good work.
Ed
Thank you, Ed! 😊
This one is fabulous. Love it, bug holes and all! ❤
Thank you! 😊
Just watched this video again after two years……still love the piece
Good to know, thanks, Art! 😃
Phil I think that this is really a fantastic example of nature. Some etymologist is going to love it. I have some crazy idea that it could be modified as a night light or a table lamp if you were to put a cut out of the exact worms that made those holes in front of it and add a light to the bowl and it speaks for itself. I really think you're on to something and should make more of these. Thank you for your years of dedication to this art. I enjoy it immensely.
Sounds great, Marguerite! Thank you so much for your comment!
i like it, it has a warm sun kissed feel to it
Big respect for not filling those holes with resin.
I appreciate that, Clive! 😊
I love it. It could a nut bowl or a plant stand as a table center piece. A truly one of a kind piece. Bravo! ♥️🇺🇸
😊
It reminds me of one of those little games with the metal ball bearings that you have to get through a maze. This is nicer than those and a lot more interesting. I think it is a fun piece and your commentary had me laughing. Good job, Phil!💕
Nice job Phil! I would have botched that badly. You have way more patience and experience than I. Also thanks for giving your advice as you turn a piece It really helps guys like me that have never taken a course in turning.
Chris! Thank you so much for sending this piece. It was fun turning it and it's a very popular video so others like it, too! 😊
The key is ........"it's unique".......spot on Phil
It is that, Barry!
I think it’s beautifully tactile.
I’m so glad when I hear a woodworker masking up. My dad was a woodworker and never wore a mask. He died of COPD. Keep wearing the mask x
😊
I love it, Phil! I have a bunch of mesquite on my property that turns beautifully. It's always full of worm holes, but mesquite can get punky real fast, so you need to stabilize it somehow or it will fly apart. Mesquite gets very pretty colors in it too, in my opinion.
I really enjoy watching you turn because you don’t use resin. Many turners would give up on a piece like this and use resin from the beginning. I admire your skill and courage to keep going on a piece like this. Keep up the good work, it’s beautiful.
Awesome, thank you, Doug!
I think this is rather cool. The bug holes add character.
😊
I absolutely love natural wood. Doesn’t mater what they all have such beauty. You do great work
Thank you very much! 😊
It's a wonderful piece Phil, and I love the bug holes. I was worried that you would take most of them off the outside. They give it so much character.👍
Agreed, Van, the holes make this piece what it is. I'm glad you like it, too! 😊
Phil ,
I just discovered your channel and I wanted you to know how much I enjoy watching you work and listening to your commentary. You are real and a treasure. Your style reminds me of my dad who could also work wonders with wood. I just recently started working with wood in another way as a hobby and your techniques for sanding/finishing/polishing have given me some valuable lessons. I truly appreciate you.
Joe @FridayNightFkights
Thank you so much, Joe, for your kind comment! 😊
Phil, just found your channel. The bowl you made with all the holes and the square sides. Very different and you left it natural. That’s why I think it’s so cool. God’s given you a gift. Don’t stop
Very cool, Sheri! I'm glad you like this and thank you for stopping by! 😃
Totally unique 👍👍
I like pieces that are different but still nice to look at.. The Frye Guy..
Thank you very much, Frye Guy! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Chris Brown...Is this a bug turning or a wood turning???...Gee Phil will you be able to sleep tonight after all those poor lonely wandering HOMELESS bugs looking for a place to stay????....Wood turning or a FRASS turning, HA...Extremally unique piece Phil, I love it!!! Sure glad you are not a plastic turner....LOTS OF FUN, I LIKE, I LIKE IT, I LIKE...Until next time....Thursday at Phil's......TM
You don't think those bugs got into my pockets and now they are wandering around the house, do you, Tuffy? ICK! Now that you've pointed it out, I WON'T be able to sleep! 😊
One of the first bowls I turned was from some buggy oak off the wood pile. It's still in the basement a year later because it grosses me out......Funny thing is I probably put the finish on with an old cloth diaper.
I came across a bunch of Maple burls that not stored very well , all have worm holes…now, I’m inspired!
Cool, have fun with them, David! 😊
I've never changed a diaper, never will, and I like the holes. Definitely gives the piece character!
😊
Love it! Been following you now for quite some time, and I haven't seen anything yet that I don't like.
Love your view on the original beauty of each of those pieces of wood. Keep it up!
Greetings from the Netherlands.
😉👍
Awesome! Thank you, Ruud! 😊
I like it Phil although I'd have to say I found it in a cave in New Mexico next to a Skeleton...
LOL!
I don't mind bug holes at all. They make me think of little cities and the holes the sea makes in stones. I'm a woman, but I've never changed a diaper and I like your bowl very much. thank you to Chris for sending and you for sharing and see you soon.
I really like everything about this bowl.
I'm really glad, Philip, thanks!
Phil, I think it's beautiful. Such a collaboration of nature and man.
I have watched many of these types of woodworking videos and usually skip the first 75% and go to the end. But I have to admit, your narrative while you were working caused me to watch from beginning to end. I'm going to subscribe to your channel. This was very enjoyable. And if you want to sell that piece I'd be interested in purchasing it.
Thanks for sharing.
Awesome, thank you, Bruce, for a really uplifting comment! I will try to be worthy of your subscription. I would like to be able to sell some of my work but I just don't have time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I will have a helper.
My favorite wood is the parts that look different, so you'll get no complaints from me. This piece looked too far gone, I would have sworn that it didn't have enough structure remaining to survive being turned. But you had it in your hands, and we can only see through the camera. For myself, I don't mind the wholes, what I don't like is finding a big punky spot that makes me have to change the shape, or worse give up. Maybe some day I'll make a video with some Butternut that ants have been chewing on, I've got a lot of it. Big black carpenter ants.
Eeuch!
i think it is absolutely unique and stunning. definitely an original.
😊
Well I'm in love with it.I would buy it in a heart beat. Its fabulous.
😊
Growing up my parents traveled a lot. Each time they would bring home something unique. One trip Dad bought what he called “worm wood”. It came in planks and he had the dining room walls covered with it. To say the least it was something nobody else had on their walls. I liked it because you always saw something different depending on the time of day. I think your piece is beautiful, just as God intended. He made sure His creation landed in exactly the right hands. Thank you for sharing your passion with those of us who are creatively challenged.
A great story and remembrance, Enaid. Thank you for sharing it with me! 😊
No resin for Zen Master Phil! I love your highly textured pieces. As long as there are no wiggly things coming out of them, I'm cool with holes. I always rather liked them in wood tables, too. (No kids here, but yeah, you clean up enough messes, your intestinal fortitude improves.) I love that one end is whole, and the other chewed on. Would it whistle if you held it outside in a high wind?
Cool, thanks, Fran! Well, I guess if it was gonna whistle it would have done it while spinning on the lathe! 😊
It certainly will make a good conversation piece sitting on the table. It looks beautiful.
Stunning. I love the reflection in maple.
Me too! 😊
Also:
Everyone: BUG HOLES, you left bug holes in there!
Master Phil: *This is the Way.*
So true, Nan, thank you! 😊
I think the piece is great! I love the bug holes, gives the piece “personality “. Do you sell these pieces because I would really like to have this one.
I'm glad you like it, Beverly, thank you! 😊 I would like to be able to sell some of my work but I just don't have time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I'll have a helper.
The worm holes give it character. Looks great!
Glad you like it, Ronnie, thanks! 😊
I like the shape & all the bugs hole. I think it is piece of art.
GREAT, thank you, Leslie!
Fill the holes with different resin. Unique piece.
😊
I like it Phil, it's a beauty.......... again. I am sooo glad you didn't use resin. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me. Thanks
Teriffic! Love, love, love all the bug-worm holes!
Funny about the baby diaper analogy 😂
Haha, thank you, Joanna! 😄
Oh the buggery!! Looks good Phil, happy turning!!
Love the piece, the wormholes and that one can see through some of them. Never thought you would be able to turn this. Thank you for being so brave and showing it can be done. Absolutely beautifull!
Thank you, kindly, I'm really glad you love it, too! 😊
So much work put into this I cannot help but like it. 🙂
😊
A unique piece gives such nice look and feeling.
I think so to, thank you, Brij!
It doesn't look awful it looks awesome !
Well done Sir , beautiful job .
Thanks, Chrissy! 😊
Truly a work of art. Very unique, a special piece of art.
Wow, thank you, Michele! 😊
I REALLY LOVE IT! SO SPECIAL.Bravo Phil!
Thanks, Bruno! 😊
You worked magic on that! Great job! 👍 Team Bug Holes
LOL! Thanks, Wendy! 😊
You’ve done it again, Phil, it amazes me to see a pigs ear turn into the Queen of the ball! I really like your turnings.
Thank you, Charles! 😊
I am a sucker for wood with lots of worm holes!! Love it!!
Thank you, Michael!
I happen to like it a lot! I think our turned (no pun intended) out very nice and would be proud to have that in display on a sofa table!
Good to know, Ric, thank you! 😊
That’s just beautiful and I’m glad you finished it!
Thank you! 😊
Love it .So different it becomes beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
