- Just a small project for most turners. For me, a major undertaking because I'm still learning to turn spindles. But, it was fun and turned out pretty much like I wanted it to.

Happy Birthday, old friend!! Welcome to the 71 Club!I hit 71 in April myself and I used to be a widower also. Wasn’t one long, for God led me to a wonderful woman to finish out my life with!! She a couple of years younger and we practically grew up together but I never knew her at all! God is great!
Try using your Skew on some of these Spindle projects- it is very versatile but does take some practice!!!
😊
I like how you walk us through the process. You’re doing more to teach the basics than the pros. I’m learning a lot as a beginner. Thanks.
Great to hear! Thank you, Matthew! 😊
Happy birthday Phil not sure how old this video is but I’m 79 in a month ,still love my time on the lathe and love your informative vids allways gain a tip or two from them
Regards
Thank you, Mal! I'll be 74 this year and still lovin' life, too! 😊
Hi Phil, I have to say this, at 71 your still a young pup and doing great. A few days ago I just turned 87 . So when I get up in the morning and stand up and both feet are aimed the same way
,I Say BONUS 😅😂
That is awesome, Ken! I'm 76 now. I understand how you feel! 😃
i really like the way you explain all of your turning as you go and the vase turned out so pretty!!
I'm so glad, thank you, Ruthe! 😊
Happy Birthday Phil. Slow and steady wins the race. Excellent job.
Thanks, Terry! 😊
Not bad for a rookie spindle turner. 😉 Turned out great. ❤ 👍👍👍
😀
I love to hear how you do not like what you are turning but everything looks fantastic.
😊
WOW Phil I can't believe I missed this video. but so so beautiful. I just made 2 for my brother who just retired from our family business. I can appreciate urs. weldone. given me ideas. lol
Wonderful! I'm glad you are enjoying your turning and keeping busy, Manjit! 😊
I’m watching it again! I think it is just so pretty!
Wonderful, thank you, Tina! 😊
Phil, I truly enjoy your loving approach to the beauty in the wood and honesty in your continued learning of how to unlock for all of us to see.
I appreciate that! 😊
Wow again that is one nice vase you done great. You the man that's for sure. Let me tell you. You do wonderful work and I can see the pride and rightfully so

A great big happy 71st birthday i love what you did
Thank you, Cynthia! This was three years ago but, better late than never! LOL!
You did just great with the spindle gouge Phil, and furthermore your forms are ALL art that makes you an artist. Happy birthday, many happy returns!
Thank you very much, Paully! 😊
Very well done gives lots of encouragement to a new turner like me. Thanks for sharing.
Many happy returns of the day Phil!
Thanks, TJ! 😊
"I have no idea what I'm doing" Yeah. Right.......! A lovely piece Phil

😊
Absolutely gorgeous piece! Wow!
😊
One of the first videos I watched on wood turning BEFORE I even got my lathe. I think I was hooked at first sight. Will always be one of my favorites. Your commentary is, as always, very entertaining and funny.
Wow, thank you, Nathan! What a great way to end my day!
Phil
Happy Birthday Phil, always great to watch someone else muddle through a project, proves I'm not the only one. Great job, thanks for sharing.
Muddle is my middle name, Hopper! Thank you for the laugh and taking your time to watch and comment!
Phil
Passion is the best doctor , yours will keep you healthy for many years ahead !
I agree with you, Youenn. We must have something we love to do to stay healthy and active.
Happy birthday, Phil! That vase is a nice piece, and watching you go through the process of creating it was fun and entertaining.
Wow, thank you, Karl! Your comment put a big smile on this old face!
Phil
A man after my own heart. I appreciate your candor and honesty. I, too, just started turning and can understand your hesitation on every move.
I am 76 and had that many “catches” my first week(lots of design changes).
Ah, yes, design changes. I can definitely relate! LOL! You've got me by a couple years, Don, but it's really good to hear from another old-timer woodturner.
Thank you for taking your time to watch my videos and for your great comment, much appreciated!
Phil
I love the natural look to your work!
Thank you, Daniel! Cheers!
I really think this vase is awesome. You are a really awesome turner. Keep up the turning. God bless you and your family.

Happy birthday Phil. 71 years young. Another beautiful project and entertaining video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much for taking your time to watch and for your great comment, Colin!
Phil
Good job Phil! I just started wood turning a month ago with a mini lathe and a set of carbide tools. Just getting the feel for turning then expanding with other tools. Keep the good videos coming. Giving me ideas and knowledge of how to turn.
Thank you, Shawn! That's what I did. I had all the gouges, etc., but couldn't get the hang of using them so I got some carbide tools just so I could turn something while I learned. It helped a lot.
Phil
Don't doubt yourself, you make quality pieces.
Thank you, Stephen! 😊
Great job Phil. When I saw that you were using Sycamore for this project I had to watch as i have a lot of it on my property and have some drying for a turning project in the future. Glad to see how beautiful it can be!
Cool, thanks, Dennis! 😊
You’re so modest Phil. Great job!
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Russ, much appreciated!
Phil

great idea! I hadn't thought about holding the drill chuck in the 4 jaw chuck.
learn something new every day!
Thank you! I hold the drive center that way, too! I almost never remove my chuck.
Phil
Happy belated birthday, gorgeous vase like the height of it and overall style. 🕊
Happy birthday hope you have a great birthday love watching you turn you do a great job
Thank you so much, B P!
I really enjoyed watching you and realizing I’m not the only one that goes into project with not all details worked out. Ha ha. Thanks
Awesome! It's good to know I'm not alone, too! Thank you, Charles! 😊
So fun to watch you and the beautiful things you make. My husband and I really enjoy watching from Wisconsin, USA.
Thank you so much, Jo! I love hearing of couples that watch together. It just makes it even more special for me!
Phil
Phil, I found this video just before the end of my day. Very enjoyable to watch. Decision making can give us fits. A friend of mine shared a quote from his Dad, "Do something, even if it's wrong." Sounds like the only way to get to where, "it's time for sanding." Nice piece. 🇺🇸
There you go, Ray, "do something even if it's wrong" is my motto, too! Thank you, buddy! 😊
Happy Birthday Phil. ANY turning is good practice. Stay safe
Thank you, Paul! Agreed, practice, practice, practice.
Phil
I think you have done a marvelous job. Practice makes perfect, so I hope we will see more spindle, vase work in the future. Jeannie
😊
Very pretty vase. Great job working through that. You’re a true professional.
Thanks so much 😊
OK. Thanks Phil. Just wanted you to know myself and my wife watch alot of your videos. We are fairly new to wood turning and are picking up alot of good stuff from your vids. I've created a turning monster in my wife, Lori. She is loving it and I have to say you have been a great inspiration. So much so we are considering a new Jet lathe, if possible the model you have. We are just trying to get the best deal we can (we are not rich). So thank you again. Keep those videos coming. Really enjoy them. John and Lori.
Wow, great comment, John! I can't imagine anything much better than a husband/wife turning team. Loads of fun and great conversations. I'm so glad to hear this!
I understand about getting the best deal possible. I just won't buy until I can which is why I haven't replaced my bandsaw, yet! Good thing I'm patient. And cheap! LOL!
Phil
GREAT Job!!! It looks really good!!
Thank you very much, Rory!
Phil
Great job Phil. Learning something new is sometimes rough, tough and difficult. I am pretry new to wood turning and watch alot of CZcams videos. Probably the one turner that heiped me the most with using the spindle gouge was and is Mark Sillah. He explaines in a way, my wife even understood. Hope it helps. Thank you for your videos Jack
Thank you, Jack, and thanks for the reference. I don't think I've seen any of Marks videos but I will look him up!
Phil
Always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next , sharing your thoughts and ideals even when you think you have made a mistake you share that as well and that can be used as a learning tool for the rest of us thanks and HAPPY BIRTHDAY
What a wonderful comment, Roger, thank you so much!
Phil
nice job, always good to learn something new
Always learnin', always learning'...
Good looking vase and great job turning it also
Thank you very much, Russell!
Phil
Happy Birthday 🎂 thank you for sharing your beautiful vase
Thank you, Linda, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
Happy Birthday. Your “unremarkable work” is pretty remarkable. I like your artist approach to the projects. Thanks for the videos
Thank you very much, Ned! 😊
Mr. Dunn I just finished a Sycamore cake stand for my lovely wife, It came out great. Sycamore is a under used wood. Your vase is fantastic.
Hi Kevin, I'm Phil! :) I'd love to see your cake stand! I agree, Sycamore is a wonderful wood to turn. I wish I had more of it!
Thank you, Kevin, for taking your time to watch and comment, truly appreciated!
Phil
have faith in your ability young man. the art comes from what you see in the wood not what others think. even though you are new at spindle turning you done a wonderful job. you let the wood tell you what it needed. again good job.
Thank you for you kind words, Raymond, and thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Happy Birthday, Phil. Thoroughly enjoyed the video.
Thank you, Grandpa! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Phil
Happy birthday Phil you are same age as I am, congratulations. Enjoy your special day 😀
Thanks so much 😊
Phil I think you did an excellent job and really looks good
Thank you so much, Robert, I really appreciate it!
Phil
You are a true turner. I like your commentary. Happy birthday!
Thank you so much, Shaukat, for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Beautiful work ,great project and finish. Happy Birthday.
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Charles, much appreciated!
Phil
Phil was actually great job as my 88 year-old brother who's a woodturner tells me there is no wrong way there is no right way whatever you are comfortable with and whatever produces the end results it looks good keep spindle turning a 1 8 th in spindle gouge will help on the fine details
😊
Happy Birthday! I love your honesty
Thank you, Norm! 😊
Happy Birthday!!! (Belated) Thanks again for your ideas and techniques.... I am a 2 year turner at 67 years old... I like to watch your details....Randy
Thank you very much, Randy! I think I was also 67 when I started turning on a regular basis. It keeps us busy, huh?
Phil
That was so enjoyable to watch Phil. Recently got the gear but have not set up yet, I'm 68 and was a little worried about safety, but you have encouraged me to get started. Really liked your vase thank you.
I was 69 when I asked around if I was too old to be buying a new lathe. Everyone said "go for it" so I did and I'm happy every day with my decision. So, I will say the same to you, Steve, Go For It!
I love your honesty! I mumble to myself when trying to figure out how and when to do the right steps.
Listening to you sounds like me, but your end pieces are far better than mine. I think I need to put more
sanding time into my pieces.
Thank you so much for taking your time to watch and for your great comment, Wayne! I don't know your situation but I was just talking to a fellow retiree about this kind of thing. If you have the time it's easier to spend it making sure you've done a good job of turning and sanding. Believe me, when I worked for a living and only had limited time, I finished a lot of projects with an "well, that's good enough" attitude. I'm grateful now I have the time to do it right!
Stick with it and you will love the finished product!
Thank you again, Wayne, for your comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Phil, wow wow wow 😉
This vase is spectacular.
😊

You are right, Dan, thank you!
Awesome job Phil... I think that it looks pretty dog gone good.. Looks like you've done this before...👍👍
😊
Looks great Phil!
Thank you G&A!
Phil
If i may, and i may sir. To me, there is no such "not artistic". Art is being invented every minute. Thats a great vase and you are funny to hear..and watch.
Thank you very much, Eran! I'm glad I can entertain you for a short while.
Phil
really great job. looks great phil
Thank you, Bryan, I'm really glad you like it and took your time to tell me!
Phil
I like those little vases. I've done about 5 so far but I don't have one that's shaped like this one. I will before I go to sleep tonight. I'm making about 40 to 50 for my daughters wedding in a couple months. Happy B-Day
Thank you, Poacher!
Phil
Belated viewing, nice job. I'm guilty of not hollowing todays project, so will sleep on it and hopefully have a solution in thr morrow. Great video Phil, thanks
Thanks, John, good luck with yours!
Phil
Happy Birthday. Phil. Beautiful vase.
So glad you like it, Garth, and thank you!
Phil
Even though I gave you a thumbs up and will subscribe, there's one thing that I don't like about you, Phil. You're younger than me, so stop crabbing about 71 being old. What a pleasure it was to watch this video since you really didn't know what you were going to do. I was able to hear you plan and then second guess what you decided to do. This made me relate to turning more than any other video that I've seen. Your modesty is pleasurable and makes turning much more interesting. So hang in there Phil. You may actually make it to 72 and then you'll be really old.
HA! I'll accept the wisdom of your age, Lambiepie! Can't wait to catch up to you!
Thank you for your wonderful comment. You've made my day!
Phil
I love how this turned out, Phil! You had me laughing a couple of times because I'm still pretty new at this woodturning and tried to make my first snowman a few weeks ago. I had a devil of a time trying to make it more round, really didn't know what I was doing. Trying to decide which tool was best and don't have that many yet..this part needed to be wider, this part needed to be thinner, etc. At one point I was feeling pretty good about it when a piece came flying off the "hat" and mangled it. Ole Frosty has a very floppy hat this year. LOL. But, having fun. That's the most important thing. Love all your videos. (Belated Happy Birthday!🎉)
YES! Having fun is what it's all about, Kim! Thank you! 😊
Happy belated Birthday Phil. Hope you had an awesome Birthday Day supper out. Love how your project turned out. Your projects are always a great tutorial too! We all can see...turning keeps you young! Take care Phil.
Bob.
Thank you very much, Bob! Turning is pretty much what gets me up in the morning!
Phil
Nice vase...looks great! Happy Birthday!

Beautiful job, also thanks for the tips Phil and Happy Birthday mate.
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Andy, much appreciated!
Phil
Happy belated Birthday Phil!!🎊🎉🎂🍻 Beautiful piece!!!😎👍👍👍
Thank you kindly!
Great job Love it.keep them coming
😊
Always a pleasure to watch you turn Phil. I'm similar and I usually let the blank decide what develops. Detail spindle gouges take a lot of getting used to. I prefer to use small bowl gouges and a diamond radius type carbide cutter for detailed turning.
Thank you so much, Joseph! 😊
You did great Phil the shape came out very good, good on you and many happy returns of the day. From Australia
😊
Belated Happy Birthday! Despite your doubts, it turned out great!
Thank you so much, Celestine! I'm glad you like it! What a beautiful name, by the way.
Phil
Well, Phil, considering you claimed not to know what you were doing , you’ve produced a beautiful vase. I hope you had a happy birthday, whenever it was.
Keep turning!

Wow, thank you so much, Andrew! I really appreciate your comment!
Phil

Glued together 4 pieces of 2 by 2 inch pieces 2 cherry and 2 hickery sucks because I bought the wood this time !.....lol oh yeah happy birthday old man.....just kidding!
