Mesquite Live Edge - Wood Turning

- My first time turning Mesquite. I found it to have beautiful grain and color and the bark is amazing when finished. The bark did give me a very hard time to keep it intact, even though it was quite tight to the wood. It just kept splintering off little pieces requiring a lot of time to repair and smooth but I feel the time was worth it for this gorgeous shellac finished piece!

Thank You so very much for your vid's. You are a great Teacher weather you realize it or not.
Thank you very much, Don! 😀
Phil, I am convinced there isn't a piece of wood, no matter the shape or size that you can't turn into a beautiful bowl or piece of art. That you always leave as much of the bark as possible is an added bonus. I think this bowl is beautiful, as is all of your creations.
Wow, thank you, Charlotte, you put a smile on my face! 😊
Oh ma gosh!! I just love this piece! We have black walnut trees in our yard that need to come down...now you have my brain working overtime!!
A working brain is a happy brain! 😊
Love it! Mesquite is my favorite... the trees of my childhood, so I knew the bark was going to give you trouble.
I'm glad, thank you! 😊
This is beautiful. And, it encourages me to turn a Japanese maple crotch from my daughter's tree. I was undecided how I should do this but now I know.
This is great, Paul, thank you! Have fun with yours! 😊
Thanks Phil.
The mesquite is so great to work with. Living in South Texas I have lots of opportunities yo cut down trees for people. Free wood. I like turning it green. The grain is then darker and so easy to turn. I have a v crotch piece that will be one of my next projects after watching this video. Your narrative during the video is do helpful. Keep up the great work.
Very cool, Larry, thanks! 😊
I think you are a master. Wonderful piece. That would look good in any room of the house.
Thank you, Stewart! 😃
Thanks for sharing Phil - absolutely beautiful.

I absolutely love this bowl .Ilove that the beauty you create embraces the flaws and does remove or disguise them .
I love watching your videos and the quirky way you speak back to yourself is so cute .
Haha, I'm glad you take your time to watch and comment, thank you, Wendles! 😊
I keep reviewing the videos. Just love you keeping as much as possible the natural edge of each piece. It’s your trademark/style and it’s so beautiful. Never get tired of it. Great work.
Glad you like them, Sylvie, thank you! 😊
I couldn't wait to see how it would turn out either and it turned out grand - the shape, the grain, the colour, the sheen on it - everything. Thank you to Dan for sending it. I hope your lathe will be all right. Thank you very much for sharing with us and see you soon.
Thank you so much, I so glad you like it! The lathe was an easy fix, just a loose handle.

Nice bowl. A friend's dad built a house in Maui back in '92. He built a fence and for one of the posts, he found a mesquite post and used it. I visited in 2015 and that mesquite post had taken root and is now a tree. My dad was from Texas and he said that is common.
Oh wow! That is really interesting, Ken. So, maybe if I plant my bowl I'll get a set of dishes? LOL! Honestly, thank you for the information, something I can pass along. Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment!
Phil

Thank you very much, Rick! 😊
Hey Phil. Great video as usual. Keep us posted on the possible bad bearing.
Good news yesterday. Found out my grandson has been watching your videos and is taking an interest in turning. Now I may have another generation to leave my tools to!
Thank you, Steve! The bearing issue turned out to be only a loose handle on the outboard side. Five minutes, zero dollars, fixed!
Wow, that is so cool that your grandson is taking an interest and you will have someone to enjoy your legacy. You are a fortunate man!
AWESOME PIECE!!!
😊
Mesquite -- one of my favorites to turn. Beautiful work! I especially like the mesquite that has been down for some time since it attracts every bug in the universe. The worm holes add a lot to a finished product.
Interesting, Lonnie, thanks! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Mesquite grows like a weed here in SW Oklahoma; however, it doesn't get very big. I bring huge trunks back from my brother's place south of San Antonio -- Mesquite grows year round there, and gets pretty big.
Abranet is awesome. Love using it. Great job.
It really is! Thanks, Red!

Thank you so much, Tina! 😊
Turned out so beautiful! So much personality. I love it! You always put such a wonderful finish on all your peices. Makes ya want to touch it.😊👍💝
Thank you so much, Sunshine! I learned early on in my woodturning that holding and touching a piece is probably more important than how it looks. It takes time but worth it.
Beautiful piece of art!
Thank you very much, Duchess! 😊
lovely piece, i did not know Mesquite was such a beautiful wood
I didn't either, Joyce. We were both pleasantly surprised!☺
Another at-a-boy Phil. Great work as always. Thanks again for sharing.
