One of my first sponsors on PBS. They make excellent replaceable carbide cutter turning tools.

This is probably the simplest most no nonsense explanation of how to sharpen a tool I've ever seen. Good on you sir!
This gives me 90s PBS feels
There's something very complete about using a rotary tool to sharpen tools that we use with our other rotary tools.
Nice job ! 30 years machinst here... ground all my tools by hand Not easy takes years of practice. Now we have C.N.C. once again good job.
Sir thankyou for a great video. I am just setting up my first lathe and this is stuff I must learn. I am now a subscriber.
Glad I found you again Tim.
Could you please share where you purchased the Gauge with the different angles?
That’s the one from Lee Valley. Look it up as Veritas Bevel Gauge.
I really appreciate your excellent teaching on sharpening!
Thanks Tim!
Where can one get that guage
i'd get a grinder that does the opposite way .Just to be sure that nothing binds up .
So it spins away from you. That seems correct.
What a coooooool hand!
Sharpie trick works on drill bits too
This guy sounds exactly like the Wrangler Star guy (pretty sure that's his name)
Gee I just used to freehand mine, and it still cut Rough Well … preferred the bevel Chisel though … nice planing cuts and rolling cuts … ovoid section shaft was really nice too …
I've had that gauge for years. And had no idea what it was used for. Lol
Excellent
Got a bit of jig envy not going to lie
Perfect
You should balance the audio a bit so your voice is more audible over the music
Where did you find the angle gauge?
Solid lesson!
Probably be more legit, though, if you hadn't borked your cutting edge first. But otherwise: totally there! 👍
ahhh every time I see nails being used or shaved to test sharpness it reminds me of the video of a guy who makes razor sharp ceramic knifes and tests the sharpness on his nails cutting through them. lol
Where did you get that angle gauge, please?
Actually I don't use that one anymore. It was pretty limited for woodturning needs. I make a much better one. You can find it at www.wtwtim.com
Discoloured steel shows youve lost the temper at the end, and have a lot more grinding to go!
No.
Almost every turning tool made by reputable companies will be made of HSS.
HSS doesn't look hardness until it reaches glowing red.
At the cost of some of these tools, I don't believe I'd roll the dice with that advice. Keep some water close by and keep the steel cool to avoid ruining your day and your wallet
@@krislink1761 information is out there, look up the temper/hardness charts.
High heat tempering increases the hardness.
You think a couple hundred degrees is going go have any effect?
@@autumn5592 if you think that the color change in tool steel when sharpening on a bench grinder doesn’t affect the hardness 🤦♂️ absolutely it does
@@rickywilliams05 Not for HSS...
What grit are you using on the wheel?
No slipstone to deburr?
Kool
Hone the edge so it will last longer.
You ruined the heat treat on that corner
So you hit the inside of the curve with sandpaper or a file too?
Not usually. The little burr that is left comes off when you start turning and touch the wood.
think like this how cnc rigs work UR the computer and how stable you can keep a piece the better kuz the less you ne to put ur focus into the more effective ur work and quality is; why do u think those "helping hands" are so useful in shouldering it less i need to hold with my fingers so i can work on the precise spot i need
What grit is that wheel and where do you get it? I just got a lathe and chisels.
Sorry I thought I replied to you but I must have not. That was a 180 grit wheel. Woodcraft carries them and a reasonably priced grinder.
What is the tool angle holder setup called? Sort of looks homemade
It is the Oneway Wolverine system.
@@woodturningwithtimyoder thank you
If the sharpening angle is 44.5 degrees, will it not work?
It will work but it removes more steel to create the new angle on the tool.
@@woodturningwithtimyoder Thank you for your videos and response. Always be a cheerful and cheerful person.
My only problem I have with this:
You blued it.
That affects your temper!
You need to cool your tool to keep this from happining.
Too far away
This woodworking stuff needs a different name. When machinist are trying to watch videos, the last thing we want to see is a piece of wood in a shitty lathe or some homemade router mill contraption.
