Red Dragon is like a true crime podcast, focusing on the grisliness and violence of the crimes and who the killer was and less on the actual victims affected by it. As evidenced by the crime scene photos we didn’t get many glimpses of in the first film and a focus on the abuse Dolarhyde went through under his Grandmother. Manhunter is more like the police procedurals of the time and focuses on how the crime affects the detectives and victims and generally more sympathetic to them than the killer. While they follow the same plot lines, it’s interesting to see how different they are despite that.

Graham should be this hollow, haunted character. It's why Dancy and Petersen are so amazing at playing him. If you can't see them awkwardly stimming in the corner of a room they aren't Graham.
