About the hogs not attacking Hannibal, in the earlier scene with the brothers, you can hear that they're playing the sound of screaming as the hogs attack the mannequin, so Hannibal remains absolutely calm, and they instead go for the distressed henchman. It's one of my personal favourite details about the film, because Hannibal never screams or gets agitated, aside from maybe once in Silence. Verger expects him to be afraid and screaming, while instead, he just stays as calm as always.

I think it’s morbidly beautiful how Hannibal perfectly blends elements of culture together with gore. The picturesque setting rich in history, depictions of elegant art, moving opera music and of course cooking compliment Hannibal’s sophisticated but batshit crazy nature really well, manipulating such elements to fit his dramatic and violent narratives. Mutilation and cannibalism aside it made me appreciate some of the finer things in life, highly underrated film.

The opera that Hannibal watches was based on ‘Dante’s Inferno’ and was scored by Hans Zimmer. It’s production was created specifically for the film as the epic poem is referenced through out the movie. The poem itself represents one of the strongest themes of the movie, betrayal (i.e. Hannibal by Inspector Pazzi, and Clarice by the FBI and Paul Krendler). It’s only on screen for mere minutes but this is just a small example of the level of effort put into the film. The story is a little misguided but damn even Ridley Scott’s confused movies are still beautiful to watch.

I love that Gary Oldman was so committed that he urged the makeup artists to hide his eyelids. In the novel, the lack of eyelids is one of Mason Verger's most memorable and disturbing attributes. More specifically (a detail that's regrettably absent from the film) Mason's single remaining eye has to wear a monocle with a tube attached that periodically mists the eye to keep it moist. The novel's Mason Verger is one truly awesome villain, and very hard to bring to the screen; it's easier to give such a character a formidable presence through Thomas Harris's lavish Gothic prose than it is through a visual medium, and I can't honestly say that the onscreen Mason Verger does the character justice. However, I appreciate how committed everyone was to doing so.

The story as I remember it from the time (I’m a Harris fan and had read these books and so excitedly pre-ordered “Hannibal,” which was a crushing disappointment) was Harris was done with the series/character(s) but deLaurentiis backed the money truck up and said “listen, we’ll film whatever you write.” So Harris thought “challenge accepted!” and intentionally added some elements like a consensual (?) love affair between Starling and Lecter as almost a dare for anyone to film it.
The filmmakers changed that aspect (and…a lot of others) which to me is why this movie sticks out like an errant nail against the prior films. As James covers, obviously many of the people previously involved agreed and rightfully bowed out.
I adore Hopkins and his take on Lecter. This is a…I can’t say horrible movie (and not even the worst of this series, thanks to “Rising”), but whatever it is I don’t blame Hopkins one bit for doing it. I never begrudge working actors for taking jobs.
I always think of Michael Caine’s “Jaws 4” attitude: “people tell me it’s a bad film. I don’t know, I haven’t seen it. But I saw the house it bought for my mother and it’s lovely.”

Well Clarice, have the lambs stopped screaming?

  • @Lopez03Eduardo.
    @Lopez03Eduardo. Před měsícem +25

    Some fun facts
    1. In the novel's ending Clarice Starling joins Dr. Hannibal Lecter in dining on Paul Krendler's brain and accepts his desire for them to become lovers. The novel also reveals that Lithuanian Hannibal's cannibalism stems from his childhood trauma of seeing his sister murdered and eaten by starving Nazis. Producer and director Sir Ridley Scott admitted that he didn't like the psychological explanation of Hannibal's actions and rejected it from the script. Hannibal's childhood experiences became the basis for Hannibal Rising (2007).
    2. The idea of eating a living person's brain as punishment is a reference to Dante Alighieri's Inferno where Count Ugolino does this to Archbishop Ruggieri in Hell. This makes sense because Dr. Hannibal Lecter is depicted as a Dante Alighieri expert in this movie.
    3. In the book Mason Verger died when his sister shoved a moray eel down his throat and it latched onto his tongue and he drowns in his own blood. As this ending was considered radically violent the character of Verger's sister was written out of the final screenplay and Verger's death altered to take place in the wild boar scene. The moray eel however does make a brief appearance in a scene between Verger and Clarice.
    4. Sir Anthony Hopkins was asked in an interview on the subject of whether or not he believed the idea of Clarice Starling and Dr. Hannibal Lecter heading off into the sunset as lovers (as happens in the book). "Yes I did other people found that preposterous I suppose there's a moral issue there I think it would have been a very interesting thing though I think it would have been very interesting had she gone off because I suspected that there was that romance attachment there that obsession with her. I guessed that a long time ago at the last phone call to Clarice at the end of The Silence of the Lambs (1991) she said, 'Dr. Lecter, Dr. Lecter'"
    5. This movie's ending differs drastically from the novel in the book when Dr. Hannibal Lecter cooks Krendler's brain it is him and Clarice who eat it consuming most of it. After that she and Lecter have sex and both run off. The novel ends three years later when Barney (the orderly) finds Lecter and Clarice living together in Buenos Aires, Argentina under false identities and quickly escaping. Such a drastic change might be explained by the fact writer Thomas Harris was quite reluctant to write another Hannibal book and was heavily pressured by producer Dino De Laurentiis to do so.
    6. Dr. Hannibal Lecter's self-sourced Dean & Deluca lunch box on the aircraft at the end of the movie contains apart from delicately-fried brain Beluga Caviar figs and a bottle of 1996 Grand Vin de Château Phélan Ségur Saint-Estèphe. The upscale grocery store Dean & DeLuca filed for bankruptcy in 2020.
    7. In 2013 there was a news story from Italy where a gangster fed his rival alive to pigs. Many media stories compared it to the scene in this movie.
    8. The scene in which Hannibal intentionally severs his hand is a possible reference to the William Shakespeare play Titus Andronicus who voluntarily has his hand chopped off to save his son (he character subsequently kills two men and bakes them in a pie) Anthony Hopkins played Titus in a film adaption.
    9. When Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is seen in his study playing the piano on the desk to the right of the frame a book can be seen open displaying the painting of the Red Dragon.
    10. Julianne Moore is afraid of cows. She said her scene with cows scared her more than anything else in the movie.
    11. In a 2016 interview for The Wrap Anthony Hopkins stated that he regretted returning to his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter for this movie and Red Dragon (2002) believing that he should have limited his performance of the character to The Silence of the Lambs (1991) which he called "a good film". In the same interview he also said that he will never play Hannibal Lecter again.
    12. Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) asks Inspector Rinaldo Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) about being demoted from the Il Mostro case. Il Mostro was a serial killer about whom Hannibal gives clues to Inspector Pazzi. This was a subplot that was filmed but never used as it was thought to be too complicated. In actual fact Il Mostro di Firenze (the monster of Florence) was a serial killer in Florence in the 1960's-1980's. Thomas Harris was in Florence during a court case concerning the matter and that's where he got the inspiration for Hannibal Lecter and also where he met Niccolo Capponi whose ancestral home is featured when Lector is in Florence under the guise of Dr. Fell.
    13. When Gary Oldman showed up on set as his character Mason Verger all of the cast outside of Anthony Hopkins and a majority of the crew had no idea who the actor in the elaborate makeup was some were convinced it was Jared Leto due to his resemblance to Verger.
    14. Originally a teaser poster released in the U.K. had a picture of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) with a "skin mask" covering the right side of his face à la the infamous escape scene in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). The poster was quickly pulled from advertisement as it was seen as being "too shocking and disturbing" for the public.
    15. John Malkovich and Tim Roth were considered for Dr. Hannibal Lecter as Sir Anthony Hopkins was initially hesitant to commit to this movie when Jodie Foster and Jonathan Demme dropped out.
    16. Paul Krendler's (Ray Liotta's) lake house with the boat dock is the same house used in What About Bob? (1991).
    17. Chronologically this is the final installment in the Hannibal Lecter series after Hannibal Rising (2007), Red Dragon (2002), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).
    18. When Jodie Foster declined to reprise the role of Clarice Starling, Julianne Moore beat Gillian Anderson, Jennifer Aniston, Christina Applegate, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Connelly, Kristin Davis, Cameron Diaz, Shannen Doherty, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nicole Eggert, Calista Flockhart, Bridget Fonda, Teri Hatcher, Helen Hunt, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lucy Liu, Heather Locklear, Alyssa Milano, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Meg Ryan, Winona Ryder, Brooke Shields, Hilary Swank, and Denise Richards for the role. Anderson fell out of the running early on when it was discovered her contract to The X-Files (1993) prohibited her from playing another FBI agent. Davis and Parker turned down the part due to their contracts to Sex and the City (1998). Flockhart declined due to her contract to Ally McBeal (1997).
    19. The novel the film is based on was originally called The Morbidity of the Soul but the publishers of author Thomas Harris's didn't like it. So it was changed to Hannibal instead.
    20. In the movie Starling uses a standard issue Sig P226 and is later seen surrendering a Sig P228 and a Glock 26/27. She later uses John Bingham's gun an issue Glock 22. However in the book Starling uses her custom 1911 in the Drumgo shooting and later she has Bingham's custom 1911 and Safari Arms Enforcer 1911.
    21. Surpassed Jaws 2 (1978) as the highest-grossing horror sequel and itself held the record for nearly 20 years until surpassed by It Chapter Two (2019).
    22. Surpassed Rocky II (1979) as the highest-grossing sequel to a Best Picture Academy Award-winning film.
    23. The phone number for the $3 million reward for Dr. Hannibal Lecter on the FBI website is listed as 1-212-555-0118. Once Inspector Rinaldo Pazzi calls this number he is referred to a lawyer in Geneva, Switzerland whose number is 004123317 either the first or last digit is not heard.
    24. After Jodie Foster departed from the role of Clarice Starling the actress Alyssa Milano was heavily considered for the part but she declined because she was already commited to the TV series "Charmed".

Some trivia I love to add since it has been shot in my country:
    - Giancarlo Giannini also dubbed Jack Nicholson's Joker in 1989 Batman, and curiously enough is own son Adriano Giannini ended up dubbing Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight 28 years later
    - I never realized how much Joe Anderson portrayal of Mason Verger in Hannibal's third season was modeled after Gary Oldman's one, they sound exactly the same
    - For the record, the case of the Monster of Florence was actually "solved" on a technical point, since a man named Pietro Pacciani was actually convicted for those murders, together with some of his "breakfast friends" who were accused of being his accomplices.
The mystery surrounding the case revolves around the fact that Pacciani was a simple farmer, like many of the other accused, and it was very difficult to prove that such simple people were capable of carrying out these murders unnoticed for so long, so the trail the prosecutors followed used circumstantial evidence that they were actually contract killers for unknown and never proven reasons, from unknown patrons.
Pacciani was eventually acquitted in the second trial for lack of proof beyond any reasonable doubt of evidences and released from prison (in Italy there are three grades of trials, he was convicted in the first and acquitted in the second) and died, apparently of natural causes, before the third trial could start.

    • @GuineaPigEveryday
      @GuineaPigEveryday Před měsícem +2

Reminds me of Zodiac I guess where they found the killer but then couldn’t prove it and they just naturally died so technically ‘unsolved’. But im curious also, was the only flaw in the case the fact they were farmers and simple people?? What was the situation about their alibis or their psychological status or did they admit to the crime?

    • @NekoHibaCosplay
      @NekoHibaCosplay Před měsícem +2

@@GuineaPigEveryday the flaw was actually that, they found evidence but nothing like a "smoking gun", Pacciani didn't had an alibi during the years the Mostro was active (or were active) and was accused on the basis of a profiling of the serial killer which fitted him, he was prone to violence, both domestic and towards others, he had already been imprisoned for the murder of a man with whom his girlfriend was cheating on him, he had connections to all the places where the murders had been committed and no more murders took place after he ended up in prison again for another unrelated crime (the rape of his two daughters), a rifle shell compatible with those used in the murders had been found in his garden, but the weapon was never found and objects supposedly belonging to the victims had been found in his house, but there was no way to prove they actually were.
During the trial a poor job has been done by the prosecutor and Pacciani's defence managed to release him for lack of evidence, caused by very bad police work.
For the other accomplices, two of them confessed some of the murders, not all of them, but both were notorious in the community for being not very bright, the last one was just accused because he was an associate of the other three but without any proof and was the only one to be acquitted right away.

  • @cjholden6205

The IMO weirdest thing about the movie is that it's at one hand the classiest and most artsy of the series. I mean, nothing against the stylish 80sness of MANHUNTER, but from Ridley Scott's involvement to the beautiful, hypnotic piano score, the movie basically screams at us in every second: "THIS ISN'T A CHEAP CASH-IN! THIS IS HORROR FOR THE SOPHISTICATED ARTHOUSE CROWD! THE OSCAR PEOPLE WILL LOVE IT AS MUCH AS THE LAST ONE!" That movie was an event and the studio treated it as such.
But at the same time it also manages to be the most disgusting and pulpy one. I mean, we got man eating monster pigs and one dude eating his own brain. There are not many movies that feature stuff like and manage to be the main topic of feuilletons all over the world on release. It doesn't even try to win over critics with some cookie cutter "Humans are the real monsters!" message or being actually a thinly disguised drama about mental illness, like today's arthouse horror movies. It says: "Hey, this is a movie about a violent cannibal and some guy without face who wants to feed him to his pigs. But it's really classy!"
Doesn't matter if you like it or not, you gotta admit that it's at least interesting and unique.

It's amazing that the same week I found out about Schmigadoon, there's a reference to it in a Kill Count. Great work as always James and the Dead Meat team!

I think this might just be my favourite ‘To the numbers’ gag
The way James just casually removes his hat and shows he’s missing half his cranium… absolutely brilliant 😂

I had no idea how much I needed a musical rendition of one of the wildest lines of these movies, but by golly, you’ve shown me the light.

I wish I could see a Black Christmas (1974) recount. not because of missed kills or anything but to hear more about the production and actors. that movie is amazing and I'd love to know more about the making of it.

I bought the first edition of the book shortly after it came out and read it in roughly two or three days. I remember being weirded out by the ending and wondering how on Earth they would ever be able to put that last act of the book on the screen as it was written. A few years later I watched the movie (completely unspoiled because early 2000s internet) and I couldn't believe that they left *that* scene practically unchanged in the adaptation. If you haven't read the book, you should really give it a try. It's not as good as the Red Dragon or Silence books, and I still can't say I agree with Harris' ending and where it takes the Starling-character, but .. man.. that dinner-scene is at least as disturbing to read as it is to watch. Probably even more so *because* it's in print.
BTW: Not sure if the movie mentions it, but in the book, the reason why Starling washes off the baby is that her mother was HIV positive - and the baby was pretty much showered in her blood when she got shot.
