In this video, we’re going to talk about osteoporosis. The first thing you should know is that osteoporosis is not a calcium deficiency.
Many people who have osteoporosis resort to drinking a lot of milk and taking calcium supplements. But this will not cause the condition to go away.
Data shows that calcium supplements do not help with osteoporosis. In fact, it even increases your risk for heart attacks and stroke.
500 mg of calcium daily increases your risk of heart attack by 30% and stroke by 20%.
Using calcium and vitamin D regularly does not reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures-but it does increase the risk of kidney stones.
Calcium is tightly regulated. Too much calcium, iron, or copper can all cause serious health problems.
You have a lot more leniency with minerals like magnesium and potassium since your body will just get rid of the excess.
30% of people in the US have calcification in their arteries. I believe this is partly due to so much calcium supplementation.
A coronary artery calcification test will give you a good idea of how much calcification is in your arteries.
Milk-alkali syndrome is a condition where someone is consuming too much calcium. This condition leads to kidney failure, psychosis, dizziness, confusion, poor appetite, and death. This can be due to drinking too much milk or taking too many antacids.
It’s best to get your calcium naturally from food and avoid calcium carbonate.
Osteoporosis is a severe loss of bone mass and density. Bone is made from protein, minerals, and calcium-not just calcium. Osteopenia is a lesser version of osteoporosis. Osteomalacia is when the bones become soft-also known as rickets in children.
These are all a result of a vitamin D deficiency. Stress, cortisol, malabsorption, low estrogen, and steroids are all contributors to osteoporosis.
Vitamin D increases calcium absorption by 20X. Without vitamin D, you would have to take 20X the calcium to absorb enough for healthy bones. Vitamin K2 is also vital. It helps keep calcium in your bones and not in your arteries.
Get plenty of sunlight and eat healthy to support your bones.
Regular exercise is also important in avoiding osteoporosis.

You can be very fit from cycling and similar sports where there's little to no load bearing and have osteopenia. Cycling, in particular, is prone to it because any body weight, except in the legs is assumed to slow you down. Racing cyclists crash a lot and which makes monitoring bone density doubly important. Even worse for women cyclists. A good example of professional sports people not being fit in an holistic sense.

Back in the 1980's I went to the #1 Nursing program at a major University. Nutrition was an Elective for doctors, It was a requirement for nurses and pharmacy students. We had only 3 M.D. students in our class. It has not changed much since then. My last doctor argued with me because he said there was no such thing as vitamin K2 when I told him I was taking it with my Vit. D3. Imagine how many of his patients get a massive dose of Vit. D3 when they test deficient but are not told about K2 or the danger of taking Calcium daily (probably CA carbonate).

I stopped the calcium supplements and sunscreen, stopped wearing spongy gym shoes and doing standard gym for a year, just walked around for miles in the sun and did some balletic stretches instead of gym and drank tons of water. My feet I thought had been permanently damaged mysteriously repaired themselves after I stopped the calcium supplente and got rid of gym shoes.

Kale is very high in oxalate (spinach is the worst), so that could explain @Jane Pedersen 's kidney stones. (The theory though is that if you love high oxalate foods, that you eat those with foods very high in calcium. Don't eat them separately. That way the oxalate crystals will bind with calcium and exit through the feces rather than the oxalate crystals making it into your blood (of which your kidneys filter). On the other hand, Eastern Asian medicine claims (and for good reason) that oxalate in moderation are good for health, as they help to remove excess minerals from the body via the urine. And in fact, your liver makes its own oxalate crystals from l-glycine when needed.)

In the case of your grandma it's a bit more complicated: Too much calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia) is almost always a result of an enlarged parathyroid gland (there are four in your neck). It's non-cancerous. But removing that enlarged gland almost always results in a cure. Here's the problem: no-one knows why that parathyroid gland became enlarged and overactive. It would obviously be better to understand what is really going on, but in the meantime hypercalcemia can be live-threatening, so the gland is removed. Maybe one day we'll understand more fully.

  • @farmur9680
    @farmur9680 Pƙed 3 lety +248

Great video! Although what you forgot to mention is that osteoporosis is due to silica depletion. You see, silica is required for the bones to mineralize such as calcium. Osteoporosis is simply a loss of collagen of the bones due to lack of silica and vitamin C, both of them restores collagen and elastin. Silica is a piezoelectric material that generates electricity under pressure. When the collagen matrix is stressed, which applies pressure on the silica molecules, an electrical current is generated that electrodeposits minerals in to the collagen matrix. This allows bone to gain density. As a component of collagen and elastin, silica also aids in giving bone its flexibility, and therefore much of bone's strength and shock absorption. Without silica, the bones would be unable to mineralize, and even if the bone could mineralize it would easily fracture like a piece of chalk. Silica aids in the absorption of calcium, and displaces the heavy metal lead, which is detrimental to bone.
Although calcium is better known as an important nutrient for bones, silica is actually the most important nutrient for proper bone health and strength. Decreased silica levels leads to poor bone mineral deposition in bones, and loss of flexibility and shock absorption, increasing the risk of fracture. So best I recommend would be either butcher's broom herb, bamboo stalks or diatomaceous earth food grade (DE), for DE you add a fullspoon in gallon container filled with water and let it sit there for 3 to 5 days to settle, this is because silica converts to organic silica form called orthosilicic acid which gets very absorbed in the body. The same thing how silica gets converted to orthosilicic acid by our stomach acid. You simply drink the water without disturbing the DE since that water has trace amount of orthosilicic acid. That is how you do it.

It's usually a MAGNESIUM deficiency. The body borrows it from the non critical area called bones in order to maintain critical muscular, neurological and digestive functions. Unfortunately, magnesium is also a critical structural component of bone. Without it, you lose calcium. So, the apparent calcium deficiency is all that the medical industry pays any attention to.
Neither calcium nor magnesium deficiencies show up in a standard blood test due to blood homeostasis.

Dr. Darren Schmidt has an interesting take on this subject as well. He blames "lactic acidosis", whereby the blood, being highly acidic due to excess sugar metabolism, triggers calcium loss in order to balance the body's PH, calcium being alkaline. He observes that many elderly people have serious bone loss, yet have high levels of calcium in their soft tissues, resulting in deteriorated postures with stiff joints and muscles. Answer; lay off the sugar. This simple acton on our part is a cure for countless ailments.

This is even most evident when the patient is on osteoporosis/osteopenia type of medication, if I look closely at the records. â–Ș Please don’t take my word for it 😅 ...get a blood test done or a lung x-ray if you will... and ask your doctor (or radiologist).

Well that's great 20 years ago, my OB/GYN insisted at the beginning of my 6 month check up that we must be taking
1,500 mg of calcium to make sure we did not get osteoporosis when we age. Now I have soft tissue calcium deposits
    in multiple locations.

Thank you so much for this analysis. I'm taking it to my doctor. I am vegan and have tracked my daily intake at 500-700 mg from my food yet I have Osteopenia. I have started adding Vitamin D 3 and will explore K2. I am very physically active.

I'm happy I stumbled across this video. By the time I was 50 I had 6 bulging disc 14 vertebrae crumbling and I asked the question why. I've always had a low vitamin D level 2 being my lowest I average around 10 most my life. I did finally start taking vitamin D3. I also have been allergic to milk since birth and with these issues I had my suspicion of why my bones in my back were bad. They did the bone density test I have Osto Pena. They told me to take calcium pills along with D. I had thought this odd because my calcium levels weren't low. Makes more sense D K play into the strength of bones

Don’t forget how important it is to eat enough proteins. Bone is built from proteins first. Especially older people don’t eat enough proteins.

Dr. Berg is the greatest. He's always been way ahead of the curve when it comes to health and fitness.
Nevertheless, Dr Berg left out some important points. It really is more about exercise and here is why. There was a famous study that was done. They measured the bone density in professional baseball pitcher's arms and found that the pitching arm had three times the bone density as the non-pitching arm. This tells you two things. One, the importance of exercise for bone density and two, the importance of bone density in relation to the part of the body that you exercise.
Another significant piece of information that Dr Berg left out is telling you what calcium carbonate really is. Calcium carbonate is limestone. Limestone is what is added to sand to make sand harden and turn sand into cement. Now you understand why calcium carbonate causes kidney stones, heart attacks, and strokes. It's literally hardening the inside of your body.
The last significant point is that it's not about getting too much calcium. It's all about the type of calcium you consume. You can get all the calcium you want from green plants and other natural sources of calcium and it's not going to cause kidney stones, heart attacks, or strokes.
And now you know the rest of the story!

Thank you for this long overdue video. What about the magnesium to calcium ratio?

    • @4EverTrying
      @4EverTrying Pƙed 2 lety +1

I know it's been over a year, but I wanted to mention that (if you didn't find this out already) it's about "elemental" magnesium and calcium that's available in the supplement. So magnesium citrate doesn't have the same percentage of elemental magnesium as magnesium oxide, magnesium glycinate, etc.
If you google "aafp Therapeutic Uses of Magnesium" and select the first search result, Table 2 shows the elemental magnesium percentages from magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate, for example.
And if you google "mayoclinic healthy-lifestyle nutrition-and-healthy-eating in-depth calcium-supplements achieving the right balance" then, under the heading Types of calcium supplements is a "table" of elemental levels of calcium in four different calcium supplements.
I believe the optimal ratio for calcium-phosphorus-magnesium is 2:2:1. (It's important to consider phosphorus too, when talking about bone health. And other minerals like manganese, zinc, and copper . . . in addition to vitamins like K2 as mentioned in the video.)
