  • In this video, I will make a very simple steering wheel that can rotate 900 degrees. I will produce many different steering wheel models in our simulator series. I made a steering wheel with a rotation angle of 900 degrees to experience real driving feel in games. I tested it in Euro Truck Simulator 2, iRacing, Dirt Rally. We will make different simulator systems not only for cars but also for airplanes. I used 15 teeth with small teeth and 54 teeth with large teeth.

      You are right, but you must be new to diy. If you just want a cheaper steering wheel, just buy the cheapest one on the market. Because building one yourself takes tools and skills. If you don't have those already, then it's going to take time and money to get them.
      There are eady DIYs where you only need plastic bottles and hot glue. But then there are DIYs that require you to have a 3d printer or a workshop. Some even require metalwork.

    • @MaxC_1
      @MaxC_1 Před 2 lety +2

      rotary encoders unless expensive Optical ones are very inaccurate (20 pulses/detents has a minimum of 18 degrees of deadzone so horrible for wheels) and also are noisy and require a bit too much force to move, compared to that a potentiometer is smooth, cheap and has a very high resolution. Optical encoders are expensive. Hall effect encoders can be used but are rather complex and again hard to find or expensive especially with the firmware used.

  • @josephinring
    @josephinring Před 2 lety +1

    Great work. I made a wheel for farming simulator using a Bourns 128 pulse absolute encoder and an arduino leonardo. No gearing is required because the arduino can count the turns of the encoder and with 128 pulses per rev it has enough resolution for what I wanted.

      no gearbox? did you attach the wheel drive shaft direcly to the encoder? i want to build this for my arcade cabinet. can you sent me a photo of your build?

    • @josephinring
      @josephinring Před 2 lety

      @@sub-arts128 yes I used a small piece of rubber hose the connect the end of the steering wheel shaft to the shaft of the encoder, it allows for slight misalignment. My setup is very basic and roughly assembled, only as a fun project for a wet day. It works very well but doesn’t get used very much

    • @sub-arts128
      @sub-arts128 Před 2 lety

      @@josephinring good idea. is this stable, even if you move the wheel very fast? did you use mmjoy to measure the encoder signals or other? could you send me a photo? this method seems easier than printing out gears

    • @josephinring
      @josephinring Před 2 lety

      It is very stable, I use an arduino leonardo or micro which can act as a usb joystick. The burns encoder uses absolute values so each position is unique and it’s impossible for steps to be missed even if you go very fast. Since it has 128 steps it means that it has a resolution of approximately 3 degrees per step. For games like farming simulator where vehicles have 4-5 turns of the wheel from lock to lock, this is more than accurate enough, maybe a more precise encoder would be needed for racing games. I might do a video on the setup and code at some time but I am only a beginner at coding so mine isn’t perfect.
