Rodman's greatest strength was his mental game. He could get in anybody's head he played against and once you let him get under your skin it's over. Then you got his hustle and natural rebounding insticts and he was a great team player. Rodman was very smart, if you watch the video you'll see that when he posts Shaq up he does it far from the basket so it forces Shaq to either pass the ball back out or to take a shot far from the basket and Shaq coudn't hit a jumpshot to save his life. Dennis's lower body was also very strong and he did a great job of lowering his center of gravity which made it very difficult for Shaq to bull his way to the basket without causing a charge.
Dennis is one of those very under-appreciated players. Rebounds, diving for balls, never giving up on a play, unselfishness, and playing the mental game are not very glamorous and many of the things he did on the court can't be recorded by stats alone, you have to watch him play in order to appreciate what he brought to a team. He's one of the greatest big men to play the game but if you relied on stats alone you'd never know how good he was.

Great comment; this is precisely why individual statistics...while helpful...can be very misleading when it comes to trying to define a team sport like basketball. Many great players (e.g. Cousy, Russell, Bradley, & Isiah) have said "statistics mean nothing in basketball." You don't get the full picture with #s alone, & in a team sport, they matter less than being a good teammate, being unselfish, & doing what the team needs you to do to help the team win. The Worm epitomized that...& he's got the hardware to show for it. Fantastic player.

96 ECF was probably the best playoff series of Rodman's career. He averaged something ridiculous like 13 points and 20+ rebounds + great D on Shaq. Those Bulls were soft as butter in the paint before Rodman got there. That second 3-peat doesn't happen without Dennis.

@LeBron Yup Ben Wallace from Trail Blazers was a really tough dude for sure as were all the others you listed... a lot of Rodman's toughness was in his mind... that's what made him IMO the greatest defender ever... just as MJ's mental abilities matched his physical gifts... he had an inviolate will to win & the skills & work ethic to back that up & make it real! Best 2 way player in Pippen, Best Player in Jordan & best def in Rodman all on the SAME team... throw in Steve Kerr whose FT & 3pt% were ridiculous [See also: GSW!]... and it's hard to imagine them ever losing a finals to any team in any era Harper, Longley, Kukoic also not Joe averages... I say the CB were the BEST TEAM EVER in any era... we were truly blessed, the fact that they destroyed the mormons TWICE while I was just beginning the 28 year DENIAL of my GOD endowed RIGHT to DUE PROCESS in my Original Jurisdiction Case that arose in utah when some afghani's didn't want to pay me for my carpentry & falsely accused me just made it icing on the now 28+ year delayed DUE Process cake... if ever heard I will win that case! you see what I meant was:
he also he LOCKED UP MALONE... and the 'he' was Rodman... then the:
"he really understood angles, probably even wrestling because he always used great leverage and of course the fundamentals of basketball and then..."... was about RODMAN Not Malone... I should have been more clear about continuing your thought about RODMAN locking up shaq... AND ALSO Malone!

@Jimo ATX Kobe, and now guards today still imitate his footwork. The NBA/EURO imitates his footwork w/ 'the gather' rules... You're right, Hakeem at least had an answer for Rodmans aggressive and stout defense. Shaq really needed to time his run down the floor to smoothly 'bounce' into better position. Centers just didn't fight defensively for the position, and Shaq didn't have an answer. Rodman is top-5, and maybe #1 defender ever. One of the best players w/out the ball ever.

Wilt Chamberlain Archive I apologize if this came off as a slight to Chamberlain. My only intention was to show similarities in Russell/Reed and Rodman's defensive strategies on Wilt and Shaq, respectively

With regards to Willis Reed, I was only pointing out the strategy used solely for 1970 Finals Game 7 which effectively worked on Wilt - and eventually comparing this to what Rodman did on Shaq.
Also, I felt it was valid to bring up Reed's effect on Chamberlain's struggles to score, as Wilt had scored 45 points and 27 rebounds without Reed's presence in Game 6. Jack Twyman noted at halftime that Reed had a noticeable effect in neutralizing Wilt compared to Game 6 without Reed's presence. Wilt may have had problems with the knee, but he had still proven himself capable of scoring when he had to and when Reed was not on the floor. These are the reasons I felt it was fair to bring up Reed's neutralizing of Wilt's offense

Nobody Touches Jordan Thank you for providing the newspapers, at first I thought you were just hating on Chamberlain, maybe I've pegged your intentions wrong. I've got some of my own newspaper recaps on the '62 series let me organize them and I'll also share them.
Keep in mind though, the context of Chamberlain facing a Wills Reed-less Knicks. Wilt was not fed the ball to be a scoring machine normally by 1970. He did not play games to out-score his match-ups, unless that was part of the teams game plan, his days as a primary offensive weapon were long behind him, though obviously he was still an effective scorer if/when needed a-la the game Willis was out. He normally only scored when his team fed him, and nobody else was open. Rarely the game plan was for him to shell the opponent when he played as a Laker. For whatever reasons, it was not in the Lakers game plan for Wilt to attack the injured Reed in G7, if it was, none of WIlt's teammates or coach from 1970 mentioned it. If one was to criticize Wilt's performance against Reed that series, I would have thought it much more reasonable to put out how Wilt didn't come up on Reed's first two shot attempts. Had he done that, and Reed missed his first two shots, perhaps the Knicks might not have collectively out played the Lakers that game. Wilt himself, had a productive game. Not a great one, but definitely a productive one, Reed's defense wasn't as significant IMO, as Wilt still got his expected 20+ points that game, on decent efficiency.

    • @NobodyTouchesJordan
      @NobodyTouchesJordan  Před 9 lety +3

Wilt Chamberlain Archive You are right. I should have done a better job of using context in the Reed example, as Wilt was obviously not the same 40 and 50 ppg player in his earlier days. Thank you for making that clearer for everyone. And keep up the great work on your channel.

Amazing work on this video. This video made me rethink Shaq’s entire career/status. I never thought of him as a top 10 guy, but this really pushes him further down. Also, the Lakers really bought some of those titles with so many star signings.
Another note: Playoff announcers were always clueless. Go watch Jordan’s 69 point game against Cavs and marvel at how insightful the announcers were. Night & Day.

Bulls wouldn’t have been the unbeatabulls without Rodman and his game. But let me take a moment to thank the creator of this documentary for their time and effort! Clearly, a ton of time, energy, and passion was put into creating this video! All the clips, the backstory about the origination of the Bill Russell defensive tactic, & music made this informative and entertaining! Full props on this!!

It's a great compilation of a great player at his best, that although complimented on his career, is still largely underrated for his influence on the game. He was great with the Pistons, AWESOME with the Bulls. If you took MVP voting on rebounds somewhere close to points scored for the MVP race, Dennis Rodman would have gone real close to winning an MVP on more than one occasion. I loved watching him play.

This is the first time that I had watched a more than an hour vid here in youtube. I am elated to see that you actually madr direct, concrete and politically-correct observervations on "The Worm" and I totally agree. Shaq is just another ginormous center on the NBA with Rodman around. No NBA player could actually match Dennis' legacy in the the league. Yes it is not the points or MVPs we are talking. If points win games, then Dennis' rebounds, defense and hustle win Championships. It also crushed the hopes of those commercial 'big stars'. That's truly the essence of 'heart in sports' right Hanamichi Sakuragi? Thumbs up and thank you Dennis Rodman. We hope to see a clone of you in the NBA soon.

  • @jxhnine2863

Will someone ever make a video about Michael Jordan on his rebounding abilities? Many kids these days think just because so-and-so averages a few more stats they're better in that area but they don't realize non of the players today played with or against some of the best rebounders ever to play this game with the exception of a few old dogs who played during the 90s. I can only imagine how many rebounds Dennis Rodman would average if he was put into the worst shooting team in this era with all that 3 ball jacking going on.
MJ was never gonna average a triple double because he was the best scoring option on his teams by far and as a guard who played along side with many players who were put into the line-up and have rebounding as one of their main priorities.
And there is the way they count assists as well in today's game. It was alot more strict many years back. For the assist to be credited to the passer, the scorer had to make one move straight to score immediately after he gets the pass if he was being guarded. But in a half-court setting I still see many players getting assists stat when the scorer sets the defender up in post or mid-range with a 2-3 dribble move before he actually scores.

Of course Shaqs game went to another level after working with Kareem and another level being coached by Phil Jackson. The only thing that stopped Shaq after that was (himself) being out of shape or injured.
