As a Japan main, I can confirm, getting even looked at means death. The guns are good though. Truly the glass cannon play style. This applies to literally every single tank, excluding the Ho-Ri series.
Unlocking the Ho-ri and bouncing multiple shells is one of the best feelings ever lol Playing Japan you expect to get one-shotted so when you don't is very surprising

Chi-To has pretty decent armor actually, 75mm in the front, with some luck you'll bounce quite a few shots. Chi-Tos are decent in general, especially the guns... God I love the guns.
Yeah the Chi To sisters are quite competitive tanks. If we just pretend that the Americans don't exist for a second (please to take offence) I argue they are the best rank 3 japanese tanks.
The problem is that it's thin armor not no armor - for no armor to work it needs to be thin enough that most aphe shells won't explode inside the tank. As that time I got 3 solid hits on a bmp1 with my jagdtiger before it killed me - always carry a couple of he rounds with me since that...
I started my game as japanese tank main. I did not suffer because i did not know that everyone else are on easy mode :). Still a lot of great tanks there in every br.
also started with the Japanese branch, but because of aviation, then switched to tanks, only now, having started pumping the tank branch, the USSR realized what to play for the Japanese = to comprehend the zen of the bushes and instantly detect the enemy through binoculars (because there is no armor, there are bushes, and the sooner you notice opponent, the more likely it is to inflict a fatal blow on him)

The Chi-Nu Kai is unironically a really good tank at its BR. One of the few things that can reliably kill T-34s and KV-1s. Most of their lineup is definitely pure pain or meme vehicles, though.

Yeah it's fun. But it's frustrating that Japan's late WW2 tanks often get a BR as if they actually had decent amor, instead of getting recognized as glass cannons.
I love the Chi-Nu Kai, and I swear I've bounced so many shots that I probably shouldn't have in it. People love to shoot for those big turret cheeks, so if you're hull-down and angle it properly you can make a lot more shells bounce than you'd expect. The gun's almost a warcrime at 4.3, especially on a tank that has a fairly small and narrow profile. The main thing that'll get you killed is taking too many shells, that turret ammorack is enormous.

I use Japanese tanks a lot and here's what I've found out, use your size and mobility to your advantage, like the L3-33, hide everywhere, hit your targets the move or don't stop moving. Use everything to your advantage.
Although japan tank is made of paper, but the fuel tank and engine block can tank all of the shot with explosive filler ingame (even is-7 and maus 128/8.8), this method work with nearly on all ww2 japan medium tank

As a Japanese main, The tree is not painful to grind, even with no armor, a vast majority of the Japanese tanks have great guns. We do not have armor but we don't suffer. (not more that any nations in particular of WT). And I LOVE the Chi-nu II (And loved it even more when it was 4.0) Also this is, in my opinion a good thing, because you have to rely on your gun, your skills at long range and your positionning. I'm not saying i'm better than anyone, but I have the feeling that most of the Japanese players (with the Italian players who don't troll , OLD Swede players and Half of the British players) are the most skilled in War Thunder and have in general good positioning and high scores in game. More the vehicles in a tree are weird, not hype or hard to master, more the players are good (except of the French main, with 50% being absolute god and 50% having the BIGGEST Skill issue ever known, playing really bad and blaming Gaijin to "Hating france")

I have only ever played japan. The Chi-Ha Long Gun is the highest endurance tank i own. Yes, the one where all the crew is sitting outside. Don't ask me how. I don't know.
Your armor is your hopes and dreams of being over penetrated. I have it happen so many times that people shoot right through the turret maybe take out a crew member and orange the breach, and that's it. It truly is the pinnacle of tank design.

Can confirm, playing Japan is like playing dark souls, every time you die you feel a part of your soul leave. You become hollow. Until everything clicks and you actually start enjoying it, or rather you get carried by American tanks in your tech tree.
theres actually history behind this, During WW2 japan tooks islands, having heavy tanks was just not an option for transport, japan also took Chinese land, where against the Chinese, didnt need heavy armor. also Japan was suffering US oil embargo which lead to more fuel efficient tanks. Overall light tanks were a good idea at the time.
As a Japan main, armor isn't thin enough for shell to go through and not thick enough to bounce, just enough to get one shotted 95% of the time
As a Sweden main, I can confirm it's the same here
As a French main I sometimes know what armor is and sometimes forget the word completely (ARL-44)
Really, I see a lot of this in Italy, C13 T90 is just the butt that the shot goes through without damaging anything.

Even Ho-Ris have enormous weakspots that anything except SPAA can penetrate. Luckily 90% enemies seem to know these.
