- The gameplay to waffle ratio is a little low on this one guys... sorry about that!

As ever, a huge thank you to everyone at Atarimania for their amazing work: www.atarimania.com
Recorded at 50fps using a real Atari 1040 STe (4mb, TOS v1.62, PAL), RGB SCART, a Micomsoft X-Sync1 and a Startech PexHDcap capture card. - Hry

I really like that music back then and I still listen to it every now and then
I'm surprised this game doesn't get spoken about more often. A really nicely presented and executed game all round.
To me the Dogs of War intro screen is synonymous with your old opening sequence.
Ha! I'd forgotten that was on there. Personally, I miss 'GENERIC ST DISK #1'.
Oh, that's where I'd first seen it! That grin :D
The player character and the enemies brings to mind the original C&C commando and nod troops
BFCrusader I loved that game. That was one of the first proper experience of PC games I had. I used to go to Mum’s work after school, and as a treat she said she would get me a game to play on the office PC while I waited for her. After lots of deliberation I picked the original Command and Conquer. What a choice!
It's excellent to see you uploading again!
Thanks Andrew. And thanks for watching.
This is very nice Atari ST game - I played this one for many hours in the early 90's. Right now we're playing this game on Amiga 500 Mini with my younger son :-) Super cool! Both versions - on ST and Amiga are very similar, the differences are really minor.
Looks beautifully smooth
Some really smooth scrolling for the ST, my sister and I were talking about "Guerrilla War" on the NES a few months ago, we used to play that "Shoot and Gun" all the time. Here in North America it was released with all the themes stripped from it, but in Japan it was a piece of historical fiction and you were playing Che Guevara and Fidel Castro during the Cuban revolution! Nuts.
The scrolling is good considering how colourful the backgrounds are. Good work from Coupe! Wow! Cuban revolution simulator? Sounds interesting. Strange that games like that were the protagonists are fighting for what they believe in are censored yet games like this were you are killing for money are left alone. :D
That's because money is the new God. We can't have any revolutionary ideas getting into our children's minds!
Cracking looking game mate. For £2 back in the day was a steal! Again not one I've seen before so that was very cool, thanks.
I really enjoy your layout in your videos and this is the way I would love to make my videos... if I ever did again!
Cheers ;)
Woohoo! Long time since your last video!!!! =D Never heard of this game - awesome!
This looks very good, very nice for an ST game and one I did not know about back in the day. I really like commando style games in general I will have to give this one a go.
It's worth a blast, especially if you like this style of game. It certainly adds enough to make it stand out from the crowd. Very tough, though!
After watching this I was inspired to find a copy. It was cracked and trained with infinite lives so I ploughed my way through the whole game. I was looking forward to a rewarding end sequence only to find a black screen with small white lettering saying, "CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE COMPLETED DOGS OF WAR". That was it! I prefer Ikari Warriors because of the overall feel, with pick-ups and tanks that you can drive. I enjoyed it anyway so thanks for the video Stickhead.
Bobby Rogers Mate, that is music to my ears. Inspiring people to pick these games up and play them is great. I don’t think the devs expected many people to see the end, so no point spending time coding an elaborate ending! :D I remember enjoying Ikari Warriors too, but this one edged it out for me and my mates, mainly thanks to the variety in weaponry and the shop.
Hey mate good to see you again!i had this game on Amiga but i had fun to be honest, its a fun lilttle shoot em up!hope you are well!
ZX_Speccy Yup. Well polished and fun. Can’t ask for more than that really. It is a little difficult, but not so difficult that you can’t make progress with a little care.
Love this game - looks great compared to war zone / ikari / etc... great video mate. Keep em coming!
Will do!
I never bothered with this, but I'd probably have liked it. One game that is worth checking is Special Forces on the ST, it's a top down action strategy game, lots of gear, complex missions - its kinda forgotten these days but I loved it back in the day. One thing I liked, is you start with 4 guys and if one of them gets captured, you get a followup mission to go rescue them.
Ohh, and after the mission, you get to give medals to your team - well worth a look I think, I'm not sure if anyone has done a video on it.
Ooh, I've never seen that one. I'll take a look. Thanks for the recommendation.
I really loved that game :) my brother and i have played it during long hours! Thanks for that :)
You are most welcome. It is always a pleasure to help people relive some happy memories! Thanks for watching.
Gotta love this game. Never was any good at it though (now there's a surprise lol). Great video mate.
atari-Staffroom Thanks Kev. What games would you consider yourself good at? I don’t think I’m a great gamer by any stretch, but I’ll give anyone a run for their money on IK+, Championship Manager 93 and Llamatron! :D
TBH my "Games I am good at" is pretty light. I did used to consider myself a dab hand at Duck Dash and Bug Hunt though. You mention IK+ there (Hmmm...interesting) . I know its a classic but I really prefer IK (on plus) on the ST. It look, sounds and plays fantastic. Just doesn't get the love it deserves.
A game I played only recently. Blimmin' hard! I got a little further then you did on your video. The David Whittaker soundtrack is awesome :) Sound scrolling there on the ST too, silky smooth :) Cheers Marc!
MrBads_Games It was only when watching the video back that I realised just how little of the game I actually played in the video! Silly me. Good point with the scrolling. The ST is fine at vertical scrolling for the most part, but the planar graphics make it difficult to scroll full colour backgrounds horizontally. I think that’s why those sections are a little more sparse on this game.
Didn't remember the game until the weapon select screen. Must have had it for the Amiga and yeah, I think I spent most of my time picking ammo and weapons... dontmakeemlikethatanymore!
ForkandBeard Ha! So funny that you didn’t remember the game at all until you saw the shop. I think it shows what a core part of the Dogs of War experience the shopping spree is. Coming soon: Top 5 Shops in Atari ST Games.
Another great video. Looks like you got a bargain there for 2 quid!
Musn't grumble. Probably the best £2 I spent. I spent 15 times as much on Street Fighter 2 and played it a fraction of the time!
I remember this being a nice addition to the genre back in the day. My brother, who was a big fan of action movies like Rambo, thought the range of weapons to choose from and having to buy bullets etc.. was really cool. It's quite a nice looking game, has sound of effects and music, which is always a big plus point. I'd say the music is definitely good, as it's upbeat and captures the action movie vibe really well. Getting it for £2 back in the day was certainly a bargain; I remember also finding gems in bargain bins.
I think history looks back kindly on games that added a little something to a genre like this one does. It kind of does what Super Cars 2 did to the racing game. That in-game shop was great too! Sidewinder missiles anyone? :D
Yeah, the shop in Super Cars 2 was a nice feature. As was the shop in Xenon 2. It's funny to think that the simple option of being to pick items in a shop felt so special back in the day.
Elite also released the home computer ports of Commando as well.
I have done some quick play tests of this game but never played it seriously... very difficult game indeed. I think it is ment as a sequel to Leathernecks. I love the intro music... one of my favourites by David Whittaker :)
It is much better when you take it slowly and carefully. But then that's not really the Rambo way, is it? I haven't played Leathernecks. The closest I got to that was listening to the ripped music on the Lost Boys Demo. I can't believe the music was criticised by the magazines. Whittaker has done some of the most iconic music on the ST.
Yes Whittaker did some awesome music for ST games... and as you say his music was even used by the ST demo scene :)
As a kid, I remember playing the Amiga version at a relative's place, but only the once (they liked rotating games through their stack of Legit Offsite Backups in that era), so never really got to explore it in a thorough way.
Don't remember much more than the intro honestly, but I don't think it differs much (probably just the sound) over this ST version.
Do have to admit though, I think I like what it does in upgrading the formula, both the multi-directional scrolling levels, and the weapons shop do make for some neat tricks in how one wants to storm into battle.
'Legit Offsite Backups' - I'm definitely using that one.
For £2 you can't grumble, but I agree with you. This game might be a generic top down run and gun, but there is a lot of polish and the extras (mission select, multiple weapons, money management, shop) elevate it above the pack.
the Amiga version looks nicer in graphics, more like commando
I thought I used to favour the assault rifle that could also fire grenades. Or did I just dream that? I also remember buying the handgun just for a futile gesture, when I ran out of my good weapons ammo, where I would scream and charge at the enemies killing as many as I could before eating a hail of bullets.
I think you are right, one of the rifles does double up as a grenade launcher too. I think that was my friend's weapon of choice. Sometimes we'd pick a handgun just to see how far we could get with it (not very). Thanks for watching!
I know it was your friend's weapon of choice, because I am your friend.
Hah, this was one of the more popular multiplayer games for me and my friends as well, and as you mentioned the weapons shop was certainly the big draw. I remember having a trainer version that wouldn't let you finish the last mission. Intentional perhaps, but frustrating when we spent hours getting there!
I really like David Whittaker as well, he's scored one of my favourite games for the ST; Skate Ball / Skate Wars. Don't know which game came first, but it sounds like he just moved a note or two around between that and Dogs of Wars :D
Someone else mentioned the shop being something they loved about many games. I might make a top 5 video game shops video. This, Xenon 2, Kid Gloves, Gods... what else?
Overlander perhaps? I thought buying gear for your car was quite cool, even though there was rarely any money left to spend after buying fuel.
It'd actually be hard to make a list like that, personally. It feels like the ST never had many games with remarkable shops. Games for Sega/Nintendo consoles seemed to do it much better for some reason.
one of the few Atari ST games which did not look that much superior on their Amiga ports
Thank you for this
You are most welcome. Thanks for watching!
Doing a livestream this sunday at usual time of 6pm, this edition may interest you as it's Atari ST gaming, just thought you'd like to know :-)
Sorry I missed it buddy. Do you have it available as a VoD anywhere? I'll have to make sure I catch the next one.
I found it! Awesome. I'll have a watch later.
That's a pretty competent looking ST Game. Some really broken game design that's at odds with itself at every corner.
Awesome video as always though: )
I like it. It really is just that "It's an 80's action movie! Only just take your time and be really careful, like." aspect that lets it down a little. Devs were obsessed with difficulty back then. This would have been better if you really did feel like an invincible Rambo type as you storm through the missions.
The more games I release, the more I come to this realization: back in the era of European home micros the games' difficulty and design idiosyncrasies were a result of developer tunnel vision. Most games were created by only a couple of people, who by the end of the development were intimately familiar with every aspect of their product, making them blind to how others would perceive it. This is why nowadays it's important for indie devs to find a test team.
Love this game, Ikari Warriors on steriods.
:D
I remember not liking this game but not for what. Thanks for the video.
Trusteft It was the bandanas, wasn’t it?
I don't remember. :p
Great, my mate had this but he had a bootleg copy of it. I remember it used to crash at random. Good times!
Ah, the good old pirating days. We had a copy of Super Cars that would corrupt the graphics after about 4 races. It was like driving around in an Aphex Twin video. Awesome times.
Looks a good game, I tend to dislike shooters that give you limited ammo as I'm constantly trying to micro-manage my supplies and run past rather than just shoot everybody.
Village Monk's Gaming Memories Not sure if I mentioned it in the video, but if you choose the mini gun it absolutely pisses bullets and you run out within a couple of minutes! :D
I can see a validity to using the keyboard to switch weapons. I mean, what are you going to do in real life? You can't switch weapons without letting go of your current weapon in real life.
Yeah, and you can only do so much with a single-button joystick. That's why they're called "computer" games...
XD Great point, you are absolutely right. I didn't look at it that way. It is a little inconvenient in real life to holster your machine gun and pull out an RPG. Chalk one up for Dogs of War's realism.
If god wanted computers to have two buttons, he would have given us two thumbs...
...wait a minute...
