Dogs of War, Amiga - Overlooked Oldies

  • Dogs of War is a pretty decent top down shooter. You have a choice of missions you can play in any order and a large selection of weapons to choose from, which you need to buy with money made from doing the missions. The controls are responsive, and it's not unfair despite being pretty bloody hard. You can even take cover behind obstacles. If you're good at shooters, I'd recommend this one.
    "Overlooked Oldies" is a series of let's play videos of retro games that I somehow never played back in the day. Many of them will be suggestions made by subscribers.

    I used to play this so frigging much.. the gun selection was something very special back then. Surprisingly complex game with such simple mechanics.

      Totally agree mate, load out, detail wise, was amazing for the time! Luurrrrvvve that minigun! Totally superior to its predecessors like commando, Great Whittaker sound track as well!

    Nice work Jim, thanks for picking this up, it's an old game Amiga wise and reviewed a million times but great to see you play this! Awesome music, tremendous weaponry, great game for me! Now only if there was an amstrad version!!

      +Amstraddler you're welcome. Any Amstrad games you'd like to see? Assuming I can find a decent emulator for it?

    I always wondered what that screenshot was from the old Joy of Sticks opening sequence; now I know.

    Just found this video. :-) loved playing this game with my son Christopher, had a cheat for it, invincible soldier cheat, see all those levels you never made it to. Simply load the game, type in as in just tap this out on the keys, timbo then press F5 key that's it, infinite lives. Have fun. :-) thanks for video, vinny.

    Reminded me a lot of the old Commando games - but then you started scrolling left! Good fun but it does look very difficult.

    I have faint memories of this one - I remember giving it a whirl once on a cousin's Amiga back in that - but like yourself probably never got that far in it.
    It actually feels like a rather good one with the cover and the shop though. Going to have to check it out again myself some time :)

    You can survive bullet wounds just fine.
    In fact the NATO standard of 7.62mm was (also) for that reason, to incapacitate but not kill the enemy troops, so that the enemy has to the extra burden of caring for them. Kind of nasty but it is what it is.

    I used to run this game just to listen that awesome mission select/gun shop music.

  • @ArcturusDeluxe
    @ArcturusDeluxe Před 8 lety

    I like the music in this, its so charmingly Amiga-ish. Actually I just looked it up and its by David Whittaker, who did the music for Lemmings 2 and Shadow of the Beast and a bunch of other games. Explains why it sounded so familiar in style I guess!

      @JimPlaysGames  Před 8 lety

      +ArcturusDeluxe ah nice. Those games have some great soundtracks. I did recognise some of the music from this game from some remixes I listen to sometimes.

    Good coop game on amiga

  • @ripsykes
    @ripsykes Před 8 lety

    This was a fantastic game on the Atari, you had to be very careful what you bought if you spend all your starting money at the start on silly things you carry those items and money over to the next mission, so if you buy the flamethrower for a 5k mission you will only have 5k at the start of the next missions which you have to use 100% of the reward on flamer fuel.
    I think i only managed around 4/5 missions but got dam that gun screen at the start was fun, such variety for such an old game!

    • @JimPlaysGames
      @JimPlaysGames  Před 8 lety

      +ripsykes yeah I don't recall seeing that much weapon variety from any other game from the era.

  • @rhydermike

    I like the loadout section that adds a bit of extra depth. However, I think I'd find the difficulty a bit hard.

  • @AmiBorg87
    @AmiBorg87 Před 8 lety +4

    Hmmm, not bad at all. Kinda Commando-like. I like the customizable loadout. And oh my gosh, the minigun and your laugh.
    About the lethality of gunshot wounds... a very big DEPENDS. What caliber, from what distance, where did it hit, did you get medical attention and how soon? In one study I saw, among patients admitted to a hospital with a gunshot wound the mortality rate was 33%.

  • @dreamkatcha
    @dreamkatcha Před 8 lety

    I found this pretty much unplayable without the critical gun-locking mechanic. Shame really, it would be a fun shooter otherwise.

    • @dreamkatcha
      @dreamkatcha Před 8 lety

      +dreamkatcha At the time this was considered a rip-off of 'Leatherhead'. That one got around the frustrating aiming system by not allowing you to shoot in any direction except forwards, though that makes it far more limited in terms of gameplay.
      What's the ultimate Commando style game? I'd love to see a comparison series.
      Great to see your name crop up in my subscriptions feed again btw.
