The irony of the Sombrero Mario costume is that the Mexican community actually liked it. It was the "*Easily Offended On Other People's BEHALF White Twitter Moms*" who were offended.
@@gamrage specifically White Twitter Moms in the United States, because the United States is an unhealthy divided and debating roller coaster when it comes to cultural diversity from other races. The Mexican Mario thing is, in actually, not offensive, this is basically Nintendo pulling a Cartoon Network, because of growing concerns from white people, similar to when Cartoon Network removed the Speedy Gonzales cartoon shorts for a time due to “ethnic stereotypes” but Hispanics are in fact never offended by Speedy Gonzales, and neither is Mexican Mario, white people in USA really should look themselves in the mirror about this. I’m Latin American born person, and I never get offended by Speedy, and Mexican Mario.

Luigi also says "Oh, My God!" in the Japanese version of Mario Party.
Also, "spastic" is a derogatory term for a disabled person in the UK, that's why it's considered offensive.

It seems like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has more censorships than other Mario games. A testament to its deep story, perhaps?
In my opinion after seeing all these censorships they should have just rolled with it being a t rated game and if they never remake this game because they never will please bring Vivian back to being her trans self in my opinion she is a much better trans icon for the Mario series than birdo
yet they didn't care at all about the noose
They should have changed “Crazy Wario” to “Dizzy Wario”

I'm gonna assume China's censorship with Mario's pirate outfit was due to the skull symbol, I recall there's been a consistent amount of times China demanded media be censored whenever it came to living skeletons, zombies... generally supernatural things associated with the occult I believe. China nearly banned Disney's movie Coco, but it got a rare free pass as the censors loved the the movie's message of the importance of family, despite the movie predominantly being populated by living skeletons.
But this is just my guess, there might be something against pirates or not wanting a depiction of a pirate be portrayed in a positive light.
As for the gesture once done by Inkling and Bowser, while nowadays interpreted as an "up yours" gesture, it wasn't always so. There's that historically famous WW2 propaganda poster of Rosie the Riveter saying "we an do it!", it's my assumption Japan post-WW2 took a look at our old posters and likely interpreted the gesture and message to mean "we shall be victorious". We still see Japanese characters doing that gesture, often overly-confident characters like Dan Hibiki from Street Fighter doing it all the time in an arrogant way to insist they're guaranteed to win, usually prematurely, and often for comedic sake having it blow up in their faces. Though Japan likely missed the memo the gesture's meaning changed in the west since those olden days. Heck, it could also be interpreted with Rosie the Riveter just pulling her sleeve back to show off her bicep and implying "we have the strength to overcome" as the underlying message.
Again, my personal observation/conclusion, I could be wrong.
Sounds like good theories to me.
I imagine One Piece isn't translated and never will be. That manga is way too anti-authoritarian in it's message.
"we an do it"
I didn't even know putting your hand on your bicep was an explicit "up yours!" gesture. Is that just a North American thing? I thought it was more a show of power, assuredness, or arrogance.
I think China has a strict policy of skulls like strictly not allowing skulls
Regarding the gun censorship, there is a gun draw in Origami King, although the guns are just toys.
There’s also a Pokémon trainer sprite in Gen 4 that was censored for the same reason as Inkling Girl. The Japanese version of the sailor trainer sprite shows him displaying that gesture
Pretty sure that was gen 3. But i could be wrong
I watched wild examples of Pokémon censorship
Lmao I didn’t know The Thousand Year door had that many sensorships. 2004 was a different time huh.

Some context on the word spastic, in the UK the word was used in a documentary aimed to shed light on cerebral palsy as it's a medical term. However, it instead became commonly used to mock the disabled and now has very negative connotations, it's like cripple.
I think the goomba is the most underrated Super Mario Brothers enemy, because it is the first enemy and can be your first death ever too.

For the record, the shyguys in Mario cart had there homes run over. So I guess their attack makes sense.
Isn't that kind of like what happened in real life with the American-Natives? I can definitely see why the American audience needed that censored.
Idk about everyone else, but I refer to Birdo as a female, it just feels right
I think there's a whole thing similar to the issue of Poison from Capcom. Birdo's gender identity and biological sex seems to vary by region .
Transfem birdo for the win
Male Birdo for the win!
I just assumed there are different birds like there are Yoshi and the modern birds is a female
Agreed, Birdo is better suited as a girl because of all the roles she plays in the games she appears in. Besides, who said that Birdo was only one character? She's a species too like Yoshi and has different colors found here and there, so we could just say Wart hired flirtatious male Birdos, and the main Birdo we know today is a genuine actress, just like how we see the main green Yoshi as Mario's best friend.
I have an idea for a Smash Ultimate series. Adding a new item for every fighter (can be entire new item or assist trophy/pokeball)
Nice idea!
That's not a bad idea. Some franchises have a pitiful amount of items and assist trophies representing them. Nintendo's OG, Donkey Kong, has like one assist trophy and no items (and the assist trophy wasn't added until Ultimate, likely just because they were already making that Klaptrap model for Kongo Falls and Jungle Japes anyway)
Pokemon Sword and Shield boxart being lame really works well, because the game itself is terrible as well

About the "up yours" censorship: in Japan it's what they call a "guts pose". It's basically just means "I win/I'm strong".
As a side note, I've never even seen someone actually do the up yours motion, irl or in fiction. Is it a European thing or something?
No I never seen someone do it so I guess not, must be because it can be seen as a rude gesture to some
That's also a pose on that one poster of that woman. Can't remember her name. I think she was WW1 or 2 propaganda to get women into the workforce while the men were off fighting.
@@espurrseyes42 you're thinking of Rosie the Riveter. That was a WWII thing.
It's rare, but I have seen it. Mainly in comedies, I think.
It's an older gesture, but it checks out, the only thing that comes to mind... I think it's in Spaceballs?
I think the up yours is actually a good pose in Japan, that’s why it’s in the game. I can’t remember if it has to do with victory or winning or something.
Plus in America, it is reminiscent of the old Rosie the Riveter posters, which were used for feminine confidence and strength in the workplace, similar to Japan.
@@Daniel_Coffman Yeah! And also one thing that kind of surprised me, is the fact that they didn’t censor Goh doing the pose in the English dub!
Does that pose just mean up yours in the UK? Because I'm pretty sure it's just a way of telling someone that you're strong in America.
@@magic2546 I’m American too, idk.
All I know is that it means “up your butt”
@@magic2546 Don't think it even means anything in America anymore; "Up yours" or otherwise. I've never seen it ever used outside of those Rosie the Riveter posters back in history. I think it is really only in Europe where it's "Up yours."
I have the reason why no skull on pirate mario because skulls are seen as bad luck in China
You know, ever since maybe mid 2000's I've never seen anyone do the "up yours" gesture. I would've gone under the impression that the gesture has completely faded into obscurity
I knew about three of these censorships. Had no idea about the rest. This was an interesting video! Good job!
3:54 Okay… that’s just awesome 😂😂
I get a lot of this stuff, but I'll never understand why Japanese companies think it's necessary to censor guns for American audiences. Like since when did Americans have issues with that?
Yeah this is American that we’re talking about they talk about guns a lot.

Npcs: *pulls out a gun, loads it, cocks it and aims with the intent of opening fire.*
3:19 well my cousin (he was 5 years old) was adicted to these minigames.
The reason the boos wear cat ears rather than bunny ears in TTYD is that (for some reason) the Playboy bunny outfit is copyrighted, at least in the US. Nintendo didn't want any unnecessary lawsuits and thus changed the ears.
Rereleases of Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros. would also recieve higher age ratings in some regions, kinda like Kirby's Dream collection.
Also the pirate outfit's appearance was most likely censored because of those laws against gore in Chinese videogames, even though the Skull is cartoony. As for why it's renamed, maybe China just hates pirates because of the whole stereotype about China producing pirated and bootleg media?
Do bunny ears really resemble the full playboy bunny outfit enough? They're just freaking bunny ears.

The Marioro ads in Mario Kart 64 are a parody of motorsport sponsors. Tobacco companies used to be very common sponsors, including Marlboro. Over time, ads for tobacco got banned in more and more countries, so they aren't really a thing anymore. Now energy drinks have taken their spot.

7:20 It's important to note that the Republic of China *doesn't* want to be a separate entity exactly. The Democratic Progressive Party does. The Kuomintang favours Chinese reunification, and most Taiwanese citizens prefer the status quo. Legally, both the ROC and PRC claim to be the sole legitimate government of the entirety of China and do not recognise each other as legitimate states. That's why they both control representations of the other.
13:56 it means someone affected by cerebral palsy
"you may never see my videos again"

I can't even choose to get rid of it
About the sombrero, my best guess is that wearing a sombrero is considered _closed_ culture, where it's rude to participate in it if you're not of that culture unless you're invited. Contrast that with the American flag outfit, which is _open_ culture that can be used by anyone without breaking social rules.
It's similar to the reason some people argue that people who aren't indigenous American shouldn't try and figure out their spirit animals- the concept of a spirit animal is considered closed.
Well that's very xenophobic of them.
I like to think that in paper mario its more like he's waving
It is a wave, but that pose looks really bad.
6:23 heh.
(3:35) Party lacking in information there. Yes, PEGI does not allow gambling in games rated too low and it would increase the rating. But PEGI doesn't have an E rating. There actually two ratings not allowing gambling: 3 and 7. That's why a few Pokémon games were rated PEGI 12, the minimum rating allowing gambling.
3:00 Me (as a Korean) : There were mini games in Super Mario 64 DS?????????????
If you are Korean then I have a question. So the mini game are unlocked by catching the colored rabbits as every rabbit got a key to unlock a mini game. Any rabbit caught can end up shiny to get the 8 keys for that door by the characters with a Star in it. My question is did the colored rabbits give you nothing? I'm guessing they never gave you keys outside of the glowing shiny ones. I have wanted to ask somebody from Korea what they did and if they got removed or edited down.

Finally someone noticed this
Mario Party:
Wario losing minigame:
Japan: Oh my god!
International countries: Oh, I missed!
Odyssey: It's illegal to depict a skeleton in China. Evidently just a skull counts.
Birdo's gender is the same as Mangle in FNaF, it's "Yes"
IIRC the whole Vivian situation is a bit more complicated than her just being trans. The words used in japanese are the same as for male crossdressers who still identify as male, so it's difficult to tell if she was legitimately supposed to be trans in Japanese, as even Goombella refers to her as male.

Another thing with the Shy Guys in Mario Kart Super Circuit is that they are wearing Native American war bonnets in the picture with Luigi, which in Native American culture, MUST be earned through courageous, honorable, and selfless acts, and not simply paraded around meaninglessly nor used as a stereotype as, obviously, not all Native Americans would have worn them. Though, of course, the whole thing of Native American-inspired Shy Guys just attacking people out of nowhere still would never be seen as culturally appropriate, either.
Also, in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for some reason in the American Version (not sure for others) when there is a player from Hong Kong in your lobby their flag won’t appear.
Gambling with luigi was the fricken best.
I actually have the reason that the pirate outfit was censored it was because skulls are offensive in Japan 🇯🇵 and they removed the eyepatch so no connections were made

A "spasm" is just a muscle thing yes, but usually the term "spastic" refers to autistic spasming, or any other physical or mental disability that is typically viewed in a negative light
That's why most people usually see "spastic" or "spaz" as ableist terms
