4:35 For the record the reason why Ms. Pac-Man isn't an alt in Smash Bros. is indeed the legal problems concerning Ms. Pac-Man's ownership between Namco and GCC that's been ongoing since 2008. As for the reason why Ms. Pac-Man could still appear in the Pac-Land stage in Smash but has been phased out in rereleases of Pac-Land is because believe-it-or-not the already iffy legal situation with Ms. Pac-Man actually became even worse than they already were when GCC sold their Ms. Pac-Man ip. rights to AtGames in 2019.

13:25 The issue with this argument is the fact the repeated color was yoshi's default. It makes more sense to cut an alternative color for looking too similar than a default. And to support this logic, Builder Mario replaced the Wario style alt for Mario. So it wasn't just a White alt replacing a white alt, but also the yellow alt replaced the yellow alt.
Also Peach got both her white and fire/SMB colored dress too. So it makes no sense to remove the Fire Mario alt even more.
@@GeoshiTheRed Peach already had both though and didn't get new costumes. Mario was in the situation of getting alternative colors and them having to cut two. It makes far more sense to cut outfits with similar colors then to cut the ones that where completely unique. Of course of these issues wouldn't be there if they just allowed some characters have 16 alts again instead of forcing everyone to have only 8. That way you could have had all yoshi colors and then have them all available in felt version as well. Wouldn't had to drop little macs alts. Characters with alternate costumes like Wario should have 8 choices from each, not 8 total. Hero could have given each 4 alts instead of just 2 and so on.

I believe that every character should have more costumes (be they alt models or merely palette swaps) than the maximum number of players. That way, if you're playing in a Maximum Mirror Match, the last person to pick the character you all agreed to play, can still have a choice of what they will look like.

Unpopular Opinion but I actually like how Crafted Yoshi looks! I absolutely hate how the Black Yoshi was removed for it donât get me wrong,and I wish it didnât have to get cut,But I do like how the crafted Yoshi looks
Same!! I was so upset when they removed the Black Yoshi. It was one of my favorite palette swaps. I do love the Crafted Yoshi though. But now I usually play with the Purple Yoshi since it's my favorite color.
Crafted Yoshi is awesome, I always use that swap.

While I get that Crafted Yoshi is referencing the more recent game I think Yarn Yoshi would have been better with the more obvious yarn pattern plus there's a pink and a light blue coloured one to prevent repeating green again
7:25 I was a little surprised when Pichu didnât get a Plusle and Minun costume.
Daisy literally had to be Peach's tomboyish doppelganger in Ultimate because she shares the same body type as Peach. Daisy was made to be Peach's tomboyish semi-clone anyway so it made sense why she became Peach's Echo Fighter.
Why didnât they make her attacks and combos different from Peach?

I hate that SSBU limits the number of costumes to 8 when they could create just more space.
This is so true, especially when Brawl had more than 4 for most when that was the character limit
This was probably due to the 3DSâs limitations. Nintendo had a weird thing of making both games exactly the same when it came to content.

I dont see why they couldn't just do 10 for Mario, bringing back Fire Flower and Wario colour, 9 for Yoshi, black + crafted, etc.
As someone who watched SML from 2015-2021 Iâd say that the theory that they were the reason black Yoshi was rejected kinda makes sense⊠on paper. Because if that were true then they 100% knew about them and why send a cease and desist in 2021 when he was far more controversial in 2017-2018, at least in the mainstream media.

Tbh I miss brown Yoshi, his the most obscure outta all the colors that the Yoshi tribe have.
While I liked the black Yoshi alt I feel like it was replaced purely because it was in the 8th costume slot.
TBH, when talking about SML's Black Yoshi, it was not because we can't play as that version, it was possible people said he was removed because in SML, despite being popular, Black Yoshi could be seen as a negative African-American stereotype (as the series has him depicted as a criminal who acts like a "gangsta" and is seen doing illegal acts like killing people for touching his Call of Duty games). In fact, this was one of the reasons why Logan got demonetized and eventually sent a cease-and-desist from Nintendo, forcing him to stop using Mario plush toys and resort to puppets of his own making.
However, the real reason Black Yoshi was replaced with Wooly Yoshi is that Nintendo wanted to add the Wooly Yoshi skin so they can get people to buy Yoshi's Wooly World.
I really wished Smash didn't have an 8 costume limit, and would allow certain characters with 2 forms to have 16. If I'm not mistaken, you can hold the costume switching button, and press left and right to change. Add costume 9 through 16 on a row below, and pressing up/down changes row. Simple as that.
Then for all gender-split characters, have 8 colours for each. For Pikachu, since it's only the tail that is different, make each costume have a male and female variant, really simple to do. For Yoshi, have the 8 crafted Yoshi colours: green, red, orange, yellow, cyan, blue, purple, pink. This wouldn't really be that much extra work.
Yes, we all knew that the felt alt for Yoshi was to promote Crafted World; it's a question of why they chose to specifically replace the black alt with it as opposed to replacing an alt that was less popular among fans.
@@seanmyster6 My guess if for the same reason they chose to replace two of Mario's older alternate colors with Builder Mario and Wedding Mario. They wanted to keep things current, and some skins had to be replaced. Also, Nintendo does not care what the fans think, and anyone who says otherwise would be targeted by the Nintendo cease-and-desist ninjas.

@@jeremyriley1238 Well, since no-one can seem to come up with a good explanation for why they would choose to replace specifically the black alt, I think the only logical option left is to just assume that it was a completely arbitrary choice, which sadly isn't hard to believe when it comes to Nintendo.
i can actually understand why pikachu, pichu, and even jigglypuff dont have their shinies as alts in smash bros. it's because those 3 pokémon in particular have shinies that look way too similar to their normal colors to begin with, so it'd be really hard to tell them apart in the chaos that is smash bros, hence why their alts are all different hats/accessories instead
as for why the other pokemon didn't get THEIR shinies as alts? your guess is honestly as good as mine. closest ones we ever got were mewtwo incineroar and greninja... that's it
ig maybe squirtle and ivysaur's shinies could also be deemed as too similar to their normal colors, but we could've easily gotten charizard's shiny at least

@@lasercraft32 its because of Pikachu's move set if they used the other shinnies Pikachu lightening would flash alot and they don't want that to happen again.the shiny Pokémons the lighting from pikachu attack will flash to much.

Cloud & Sephiroth shouldâve had alts based on their KH1 designs
Sucks that they're my favorite renditions of the characters, and just couldn't be in Smash. They always felt like the definitive versions to me, as well as for Nomura's art style overall.
That probably would've spoiled the surprise of Sora being a fighter.
1.) There were already KH references in SSB before Soraâs inclusion. Cloudâs VA debuted in KH1, Sephirothâs one winged form debuted in KH1, & Shadow Flare is based on its KH design
2) Robin has an alt that references White Mage from Final Fantasy before Cloud was ever announced.
3.) Thereâs various other instances of series being referenced before their fighter representative got announced such as Kid Icarus, Wario, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Punch Out, Duck Hunt, Splatoon, Banjo-Kazooie, Arms & Tekken.
So no reason not to have their KH1 outfits as alts

They should have made an alternate costume for for Yoshi that made him look like boshi
Here's some clarification for Ms. Pac-Man.
Namco *does* still own the rights to her game and her as a character. But AtGames (yeah, them) owns the royalty rights her game, meaning that even though Namco owns her and her game they have to pay royalties to AtGames if she makes an appearance or her game gets rereleased, and given the debacle of how AtGames got her royalty rights in the first place Namco isn't all too keen on paying them anything. Which is why as of now she's unfortunately being phased out.

6:48 The Red Mega Man alt is from the first Mega Man when he uses the Fire Man weapon
The red alt is used for the Rush items, the orange and yellow one is the one used for Fire Man's weapon.
From an internship at Nintendo, I'll just chime in a few of the "cut" alts such as black yoshi, Fire Mario, and extra Wario and Little Mac alts is because early on they decided to limit each character to 8 alts per character. I don't know if this comment is considered under my NDA and if it is this comment may go away, but because I have seen it online and Sakurai himself did specifically say each character would have exactly 8 alts, I don't think it would ?
His fire alt was likely removed as the wedding alt was the one chosen to represent the "white alt" because the alts are supposed to be idealized not just be references. I.e. the alts are labeled by color so Cloud has a default a brown Alt etc. Despite very little difference then there is the AC alts and their breakdown.
However, that doesn't explain why the "black alternate" for Yoshi was cut from the _Super Smash Bros. Ultimate_ roster.
@Steven Villman it's because they prioritize. They had more alts planned for a few characters. Yoshi was supposed to get a yarn yoshi Alt and a few different colors, including black, but they were ultimately scrapped to formalize the 8 alts per character. And the crafted world yoshi was seen to be the best for marketing at the time so it was chosen for the 8th alt over others

Hate to be a buzz kill, but apparently that Lord stuff is just a souvenir gag present. Some people even call it a scam. It just depends on your perspective.
I honestly think there's no deeper meaning, and I'm using Occam's Razor right here. They just chose to replace costume slots in the moment, since most, if not all, only get 8, without much thought behind why.

While I feel like a ton of this stuff could just be chalked up to âOccams Razorâ, basically the simplest answer of New Stuff Takes Priority so remove older stuff, not having the right artwork, legal issues etcâŠâŠ..but itâs fun to speculate. I'm going to be honest here, Nintendo probably just dropped one of Yoshi's newer alts at random for Wooly Yoshi, as you said multiple times Nintendo doesn't really listen to anyone, so I'd be shocked if there was another motivation

Established Titles is a scam. There's a court in Scotland that deals with titles, and they ruled they are selling souvenir land, and it isn't really yours because you can't register souvenir land in Scotland. Someone else that actually lives there can buy it. They also said these plots do not make you a Lord or Lady.

@@Siiroth You were this close to the final nail in the coffin. Logan did ruin Black Yoshi, but being in Mario Kart made sense because no one was getting directly hurt (shells and banana peels at the kart are different than punching and kicking at sometimes the face), since physically beating up a black stereotype in a fighting game meant for âgood boys and girls of all agesâ equals bad. That cease and desist really should had come sooner, since the Purple Yoshi should have been cut since that color wasnât in Yoshiâs Story.

We have just failed as a species where the colour of a fictional character or very minor character designs cause more outrage than more serious issues in the world
Its not the black Yoshi color whats the problem its the message of that Yoshi comic Nintendo obviously wants to sweep that black Yoshi comic under the rug because people find it racist even though Black Yoshi is a Yoshi and not a black person.

I'm going to assume 90% of the cuts came down to the storage limitations that came with using cartridges again. A 60gb blue ray is cheap to produce but a 60gb proprietary cartridge? Yeah, it's safe to assume storage was an issue, especially considering the switch had and still has a pitiful 32gbs of onboard storage.
The feather getting removed on Mr. Game and Watch's head was a necessary decision to avoid further offense though. :/
If it was Nintendo executives deciding to replace Black Yoshi, then he wouldn't be in Mario Kart. The smash devs made the choice, probably because purple and black are the newest Yoshis, and because purple is better for marketing to kids.

Ok the reason I think they donât hav Shadow is because he might have been planned as an echo but people complained about him in Forces the year prior and how he wasnât unique in that so they decided to wait for the next smash since SEGA cares and would definitely pull the plug if they werenât happy
I remember the creators of the Sonic Boom tv show saying that the reason Shadow didnt appear much in it is because Sega gave them a GIANT document filled with rules/guidelines on how to portray Shadow, so they just made other characters joke about how serious and edgy he was instead of having him make jokes.
That probably has alot to do with why Shadow isnt an echo, or a costume. Wouldnt be properly representing hin.

17:25 i think ground level 2 and jungle level from brawl were cut probably of how similar they are to other remixes of the same base music (Like Kongo jungle from smash 64 or Princess peach's castle from melee) or the didn't want to overdose the game with mĂșltiple remixes of the same song, so they scrapped the most similar ones

I still.want a custom color thing Give the default skin and be able to change some colors on the outfit. Save it to an amiibo so when you scan it you can play as your custom color. Like black yoshi. Or even another color that does not exist like teal. It would not be a lot but some of the colors would have a color wheel where you adjust the colors. Like on many games that have build a fighter. (Like soul calibur)
This is a crime that Nintendo cutting these out, itâs no excuse to include them which they should have done that in the first place

What frustrates me the most still is the lack of octoling costumes. They put a ton of effort into the outfits for the inklings, even just 2 octoling alts would hardly be more difficult

one of the things that bugs be most is that for midna's lament as a track they didn't have the one they used in brawl there is only a weird remix of the track

Personally, I agree with you that they should have replaced the regular Green Yoshi with the tennis ball variant and squeezed in Pink Yarn and Baby Blue Yarn Yoshi.
A Gameboy Green and/or Black & White Daisy color scheme would have been amazing!
I'm guessing a lot of it probably has to do with personal preference of the ones making the game too... Like a lot of characters have palette swaps that are barely different from the regular ones, like Bowser, simply to represent some older classic version of the character (I assume because the devs, especially Sakurai, have a soft spot for the older stuff like Game&Watch).

The fighter spirit one I find interesting. Them using the Ken Sugimori watercolor works for the PokĂ©mon (at least for the first two gens) would be cool though them using the Global Link artwork makes sense to keep them uniform. As for the Trainer thoughâŠodd they didnât use the Protag art for FRLG, the works the models are based off. Sure it wouldnât be as uniform but would anyone really complain?
Robin I find more interesting since they show to have no problem using Tharjaâs portrait artwork rather than her full body artwork (something every other FE spirit uses) so why not just use that for them?
I think the issue is looking for an explanation where there is none. I think they did what they wanted to and didnât have a reason

MKTour adds more yoshis when they wanna dilute the loot boxes or add different passives. It's an easy choice and will probably see more yoshi's as the game ages

i think the real reason might be that black yoshi was in the wii u but not white, but if that was the case why not they add white yoshi to ultimate?

Sakurai hurts my brain, he also says he hates that Bowser has a personlity and should've remained as a mute beast that just steal the princess, people love bowser BECAUSE he's characterized
To my knowledge Sakurai has never said he hates Bowser's characterization. He just said that that the inclusion of beastly traits primarily in Giga Bowser but also somewhat in Bowser in his games was based on the vibe he got from the sprite and limited animations while playing Super Mario Bros. back in the day.
Established titles does not give you an âofficialâ title, its more like a joke gift or something youâd buy as a joke yourself

Kids are smart and will NOT get confused by a shiny Pokémon. Just put the art in the booklet guys. In fact you should make like 10 shiny variants for each Pokémon.
IMO to avoid MY confusion Yoshi should ONLY be Green, Red, Blue and Yellow and wooly. and Link and Toon Link and Dark Link and Ravio should be the SAME character.
Mario should never be Yellow and Luigi should never be purple
but that's just for my own Confusion.

and all the BIG Nintendo heroes should have Captain N color swaps.

Maybe Black Yoshi was removed because his color pallet was too hard to see against a black background? Or maybe they just chose on randomly or from charts and polls?

Bro, videos like this make me feel sorry for the team who worked on Smash. They probably just thought certain alts, songs, spirits etc were better than others or just forgot about these things. Yet here we are on CZcams watching videos accusing Nintendo of trying to cover up part of their history, not listening to fans, letting third parties get away with being protective, or simply just having bad taste, all because your favourite alt/character/song etc isn't in the game. Man, these people catch so much flak. The game's been out for *years*, can we just lay off them for a moment, please?
My guess is that after sml rebranded his channel Nintendo gave the Green light to brig back Black Yoshi for Mario Kart Tour in 2019, and since he was already cut From Smash the Ultimate developers didn't want to add him back in for some reason, the way I see it, Ultimate was unfortunately in that awkward spot in 2018 where they didn't allow Black Yoshi due to the controversy, however he might actually return in the next Smash game due to him being extremely popular and Nintendo giving them the Green light to use him again as seen in Mario Kart Tour.
I feel like taking away black Yoshi makes the racial issue worse. Like what if there was a bad depiction of nightwolf from mortal kombat on an old comic then they proceed to remove the only native american rep
To be fair, Mario Kart Tour still gets updated every 2 Weeks with new drivers, be they actual characters or costumes.
This includes Yoshi colors. Not too long ago they added Orange, so I'm sure some day we'll also get Cyan, Yellow and Purple.
(Yellow Yoshi does already have a Gold Egg and Kangaroo costume, but I mean the standard version.)
Then again, the default art of those 3 specific Yoshi's are different from the others, so who knows.
R.I.P. Brown Yoshi, though.
