  • This is Neoplan #6516 with a Cummins L10G and Allison B400R. This is parts of a ride on Line 20 along Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA filmed by my friend who was riding with me.
You'll notice in this video the belt squealing on the bus whenever the engine fan engages and the bus accelerates. Almost all of these Neoplans operated by LACMTA have this belt squealing problem.

These Neoplans in LACMTA are the only busses I've ever ridden with belt squealing, and I've been on a lot of busses! I did come across a few of these without the squeal and or very minor squeal such as #6464. #6495 on the other hand has severe belt squeal when the fan is on. This bus in the video represents what I seem to come across a lot regarding belt squeal.

Also, the belt squealing is actually normal when the fan is engaged. There are several LACMTA New Flyers (both high/low floors) I've recorded that did the same thing.

I've heard even the S50G powered New Flyers squealing their belts as well, but it only seems to happen with busses in and around Los Angeles. One bus I rode, 6530, didn't squeal the first time I rode it and then when I rode that same bus a few months later, it was squealing.

I am a former mta mechanic and i can tell you the its the fan clutch engaging not the belt its self and yes the mta busses are equipped with a b400 transmission

I haven't and last time I was there, every 6700 series bus I saw was repowered.

There is a difference, the B400R is the lighter duty version of the B500R, and these busses have the B400R from what I was told. Only way to know for sure is for someone to ask a LACMTA mechanic...

That would be the deaf friend who was with me filming this video.

I think these particular Neoplans have some sort of design flaw in the belt tensioning system for the fan belt or not enough belt wrap around one of the pulleys, therefore causing the squealing problem with these.
MUNI in San Francisco, CA runs a lot of Neoplan busses from 2000 and up, and not one of these squeals or seem to have any of the other problems the LACMTA ones do.

Interesting that we heard different things, I mean they even sound like a B400R to me, the B500Rs seem to have a slightly different sound but its hard to notice. One thing that the B400 does though is some samples seem to thump when going into 3rd whereas I've never heard the B500R do that.

I do realise Neoplans had some issues (MUNI comes to mind with the warranty issues), but still they seem better built than those NABIs. I've never really liked the NABI's anyways, but New Flyer, Orion, Gillig, Van Hool all seem good as do the pre MUNI Neoplans and old Flxibles. However NOTHING beats the GMC New Look or Fishbowl, those were well built!

Either of the two transmissions can do that, depending on the tuning.

The Neobombs as we call 'em have and electro-magnetic clutch. The 3300's were straight belt driven. And the 8200, 1900, 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300 RTS series have a viscus fan drive witch you will find in older cars but then the engine/trans were at a "v" configuration. The whisliting sound you hear is the vanes or the pitch on the radiatior/charge air cooler from the air that is sucked in. The hydro drive fans i've seen were on the Gilligs, New flyers, Nabi's (worst pieces of shit ever built)

Don't these busses feature hydraulically driven fans due to where the fan is located in relation to the engine? I haven't seen the engine bay of these as of yet but you mention a fan clutch, I'm guessing the fan is a seperate hydraulic system with a clutch on its own hydro pump connected to the engine, and the squealing is the fan clutch slipping. I came across a few of these with excessive fan whine as well.

Anybody capture any videos of Series 50G Neoplans from LACMTA?
