Fix Wheel End Rattling Noise | Clunking noise over rough roads | Easy brake service

- Some of you might have wondered about the rattling and clunking noise while going over a rough or patched road even though all the suspension parts are in good condition. Brake caliper is one thing that most people neglect in such conditions. Brake caliper has a slider pin that slides inside the the brake bracket and its provided plenty grease for lubrication. The grease can wear out or dry out causing the parts to wear and thus excess play. This play between the bracket and slider pin can cause a clunking or rattling noise when going over rough patchy roads.

Thanks for demo'ing a Hyundai brake caliper. I'm having this problem with my '18 Santa Fe, and it's really LOUD going down the road. Never would have though such a simple thing can make such a racket.
Very helpful, did it on my Toyota Runx TRD, worked well knocking noise is gone
R50 Mini and in traffic today I heard that very sound. Thank you will have a look at the brakes. Been watching a lot of sound videos to id it.
Thanks for the video , I have been done in a 03 ford ranger xlt and works perfectly
Glad to hear from you mate 🤗

@@dailyhandsdiy post Crazyengines Videos here with English subtitles..
Actually the ones i do here is what i post there, Just with language.
Frikin Genius my friend, I've changed struts c/arms stab/links, of course pads& rotors, here I am 6 months later, using your method again thank you!!
Did it fix your problem?
Yes it did! 👍
In the same boat as you. Replaced stab links, struts, and control arm, and still hear this rattle when going over bumps. Never thought about brakes until I notice the rattle stops when braking. Brake caliper I’m assuming?
Caliper pins have come loose which makes the noise.
@@dailyhandsdiy Got you, will they still rattle by hands with the tires on?
1st time visit this page. Thanks for for your kind reply to your viewers doubt. Keep rocking
Always happy to help mate...💪😊
Wow. Never thought those bolts might go bad. Thanks
Yup they go bad over time.
It's not usually the pins, but the bore becomes oversized.
correct 💯
Just helped me figure out my problem!
This is crazy solution but if something is stupid but it works - it is not so stupid! :) Did it myself to my Toyota Avensis - front calipers, now its time for 500 km test drive :)
Thanks for this! Just what I needed to help me find the problem. However, you only need more grease in the slider pin hole to stop the shaking.
Hi, simple more grease won't do the job. The grease will washaway to sides and the shake comes back...
MAN, I LOVE YOU!!!!!! YOU GUIDED ME STRAIGHT TO MY PROBLEM
Many thanks
This actually works pretty well especially if you don't have the funds for new calipers.
Yup absolutely...
It worked. Except I wrapped a cut piece of flashing most of the way around the pin to fill in more of the gap. Never would have figured this out without your video, good job. However, its probably better just to buy a new caliper set anyhow.
Glad to hear from you mate. If you are going for new caliper pins, you need new brackets as well or the sound won't go away.
Yup tried this and replaced both calipers and the sound on the right side still there. I replaced the bolts on the right side where rattle comes from, but still making noise. Might need new caliper on the right side only 😢😢😅😅
@@420visiont-_- The proper fix is the enlarge the pin bores and fit oversized pins.
OMG, I can't believe that so many people think that this is a good solution! First of all, the only thing that should be on these caliper slide pins Is brake grease. Whichever component/s that's responsible for the noise which might be a bad rotor, bald tires, loose caliper bolts, Xtra thin brake pads dancing around in the caliper; just fix the faulty component of replace when fixing is not an option. This is total madness particularly when dealing with one of the most critical systems on your automobile.
You list a number of components that clearly aren't the problem. The problem is the pin bores. I agree it's not the correct fix but you don't know what you're talking about.
Having same problem but now after reading your comment I think it could be an extra thin brake pad causing my rattling.. Thank you for insight .. I had a seized caliper a few months ago which got replaced but never addressed my brake pads.. so its possible the wheel that had a stuck caliper wore down the brake pads and therefore dancing around causing the noise...
@@tomskimcdouglegaming806but somehow I know enough to know that this is not the proper way to address the problem hmmm, it's crazy. There are hobbyist mechanics, did mechanics, egotistical wanna be mechanics and there are technicians. I know where I fall so if you think I don't know what I'm saying them go put foil on your slide pins. While you're at it put some cooking oil in the brake fluid...
@@automedicine You seem angry. It's OK not to have experienced this particular issue no matter how much experience you have.

Thanks very much I use an red bull tin and the noise stop
Big up you 👍 was looking for this tempory solution till i order my new set of sliding pins👍big up urself very helpful
Glad to hear from you mate
@@dailyhandsdiy The faulty part is the sliding pins? Meaning if i replace the sliding pins the issue should be no more?
Nop, the issue lies on both pins and brake brackets...you need to replace both.
@@dailyhandsdiy thank you man goated
My ford ikon gave same problem. The garage told me it would cost me 1000 rs to get it fixed. For how long this solution will last. And do we need to use aluminum paper used for wraping chapati ?
This could actually last for min 2 years if you are using soft braking and if hard braking donno. any how for 2 years it should do the job. its not foil, its aluminum plate or pan used for packing food from food court.
Welcome back mate, long time. As always right video at the right time...so this is basically tinfoil right? :)
Its not softdrink can, its aluminum food pan from food court to pack food. Softdrink can is a bit thicker and can get stuck or seize if lubricant dries out.
@@dailyhandsdiy great! So the basic higher micron aluminum foil would do I guess.
I guess its a 40 micron package box
Thanks, great video and that noise seems to be the same noise I recently started hearing on my front end driver's side on bumpy roads. Since the container aluminum foil is inserted to take up excess space from wear and tear, do you have any idea how long this type of repair might last??? I guess the other option is.... installing new front brake calipers... right if this in indeed my problem??? Thanks again!!!
Hi, those aluminum can last atleast 2 years and completely depends on how you brake and the lubrication. Its useless to change the caliper. You need new caliper pins and bracket. Caliper wont cause any noise.
@@dailyhandsdiy Great info, thanks so much for the reply in new additional info!!!
welcome back i dunno if you remeber me from a post is commented on before about MAF sensor having issues with power , well all along it wasnt my engine or anything like that its was the left side of my car the break binding on i only noticed this even more when i pulled away from the traffic lights and it felt like the hand break was on when it wasnt got it home the left side tire was hot and the break disk was boiling so amsuming somthing up with the caliper has the right side is fine but iv took wheel off hammered it a couple a times put some stuff on and it seems to pull away alot beter and maintain speed and also noticed who ever had the car before me when they changed the pads they didnt put a clip on the ouside break to hold it in place think its a retaining clip but thanks for vids welcome back
Hi, most of the time wrong installation and services cause such issues. Also some ppl put in higher micron spacers and eventually it dries up or get caught inside causing the brakes to seize and bind. Its a good idea to check the sliders if its free or tight.
@@dailyhandsdiy il be honest iv ordered some knew brake pads and disks and calipers at the end of the day its a safty issue so gunna get both sides done
Cool 👍👍🤝
I'm pretty sure this is what I'm experiencing on my subaru forester. I recently had the front brakes inspected at a mechanic shop, but they said everything was fine. Is this sound a reason to be concerned?
No really, its just the pins rattling. There won't be any issue other than the irritating sound.
guess i have it also on a subaru. how did it turned out on your car? what was the repair?
Hey brother I have a 2021 honda accord I am getting that noise on 1 side after changing brakes and rotors. I have replaced everything. I can't move it by hand much I can rock it a little side to side is that normal
Hi there mate, there shouldn't be any play or rocking, it should be solid.
I have this sound on a honda. I changed my brakes a few weeks ago and now the noise has came. Is jt safe to drive like this?
Just changing the pads won't cear the issue. Have to chnge the brackets and pins to eliminate the issue. There's nothing to worry as its not gonna affect anything. You will hear the clunking noise every time you hit the rough road. Be sure its the slinder pin rattle. if its from any other parts can cause a headache.
Bro, you should be the next "Chrisfix"!
Haha thanks bro...if am lucky enough....
Hello bro i have checked in my swift diezel the first 2 glow plugs are not giving spark and last two are giving just mild sparks while connecting the other end of wire to positive terminal of battery. That means first two are faulty ? I encountered white smoke for 10 seconds during cold startup in mountains please help and advice
Yup those are bad. And the method you used is just not the right way, even that spark can put a crack on the heating element. Use a multimeter to check...safe.
@@dailyhandsdiy does faulty glow plugs cause any problem in pickup or power loss or its only needed for starting?
Just for starting only...
Why you buy a Ram diesel they have no glow plugs
Im having a rattling and clunking noise every time im breaking l do changed the swaybar links already and it’s still there
Do check the lower arm bushing.
I have a sound in the rear wheel only when I drive on a bumpy road . When I drive on a bumpy road, the sound appears,When I press the brakes, the sound disappears. Does what is in the video apply to my case?
If you have a disc brake setup in rear wheel, there's a chance.
Hello sir. Im driving a 2014 Hyundai i30, it runs smooth on a highway, the problem is that after driving it for about 20-30km, when i stop on a stop sign or traffic lights, theres a knocking sound on the left rear of the car, please help me figure out what could that be👏🏻👏🏻
Might be the exhaust pipe. It might be hitting some where or loose.
My car's noise sounds exactly like that, but it only does it on bumpy roads, in a nice well paved road doesn't do it. Could this be the problem?
May be, you could just check it. brake slightly when the noise is heard. The sound should go away while braking and if not there are other parts like link joints, lower arm joints to check.
Same here. Same problem
Same problem, noise is gone when apply brakes on bumpy road. I just change the pins or the whole caliper and brakes hose too. 2001 odyssey 300k miles
Did it on my Chrysler 200, i want to keep it like that cause its quiet now. But im worried it could start a fire ?
its won't start any fire, just gets wear out in 20k kms and might need to redo it..thats all.
Bro, How to lift engine from car without Hoist? Please share your thoughts..
Its actually a tough job. Could be done...remove the bonnet, tie the chain to engine support mounts, need 4 people to lift the engine. its almost less than 150 kgs.
Get a hold of a good magician
i hear the rattling sound sometimes when i break like it’s rare why is that ?
Mostly the rubber bushings cause these kinda sound while braking...lower arm bushing about to fail... suspension mounts etc...
I used sheem brass on mine.
Brass copper aluminum etc.. should do the job.
Replace the caliper bracket and pins with new ones.
That would be the perfect fix...but expensive. some owners might neglect the expensive one and instead advice to do a cheap fix. So this one does the job.
Buy new brake calipers!@@dailyhandsdiy
Hi, my mazda 3 2008 has clunking noise too in puchy road but when you hit the break the noise is gone.
Is it the brake caliper problem too ???
Pls help thanks
Yes, this could be loose caliper pins.
@@dailyhandsdiy
Thanks a lot
bro may I know what is the sound when u heard it in your car.
I have a tik tik tik sound, I wonder if this is caliper sound. Hmmm Appreciate if you reply my message e!
Hi there, it was something like clunking over rough roads and potholes. And goes out while braking. You could simply go through a rough road by pressing the brakes slightly. If there's no sound its the brakes and if the sound persists, then its something else.
What thickness is the metal shim?
Anywhere between 0.1mm to 0.3 mm will work. Depending the wear.
@@dailyhandsdiy thanks.👍👍
Was that an ordinary paper or what material is that that you wrapped around the bolt?
Its aluminium
Caliper ko silver paper konsa he?
0.2mm or 0.3mm aluminum or copper shims
@@dailyhandsdiy thanks
Iska fayada kya hota hai?
You are leaving that foil in are you?
Yup that foil lowers the extra clearances and that's what we need...or could just swap the complete brake bracket and pins...only if the expense is not a problem
New brake caliper and bracket with pins is about 65.00 from Rock Auto.@@dailyhandsdiy
Bro is that aluminum foil?
Hey bro...its aluminum foil container. Its a bit thicker than foil wrap.
This should work great... For about 40 miles
It worked good for about 1 year and around 25k kms
Permanent solution please
Replace the bracket and pins and use proper copper based grease for lub.
I LOVE this video. New brake pads, rotors, calipers, ETC.....ALL NEW, then paid 2 reliable brake service companies of a total of over $500 to completely go through the brake system and both did a complete re-bleed and they both could not find out how to fix this problem. So sad I had to spend so much money to brake companies who don't know everything about your brakes and that I had to spend weeks searching because I finally typed in search engine with the right words to find your video in order to solve myself.
hi, happy to hear from you and made my day...😊
Just replace worn out parts do not shove junk in where the pins go this is a horrible idea and awful practice.
I just bought brand new calipers and they rattle just like this, I think re maned parts are just garbage these days
@@themetaphysicalaxe5506 Yeah new parts can be hit or miss now days, just had a coolant temp sensor that was bad brand new out of the box $40 car quest part. try some oem pins might take care of it.
Is it better to replace the pins or the whole bracket altogether
@@TheShakir98 All of it together is usually the best way and new bracket mount bolts. I'd only try replacing just the pins if its all new/newer parts with a poorly made set of pins.
@@Stoshua.81 yup, as they say "poor man pays twice". I first cheaped out on a bracket and bought pins with boots and gaskets for about $60-65. I still had the dreaded clunk when going over imperfections on the road. I, then, bought reman bracket for $50 which came with slider pins, bracket for pads and bracket itself. Installed it and the noise is gone. Learned my lesson here
Im all for creativity, but this is not it:(. I am facing the same issue on front left wheel, i just went to the junkyard and got a healthy carrier and pins…..cost me like 10 eur.
That works too 😄
The pins are $5 each just buy new ones.
only pins won't fix it. You have wear on both sides so you need to change the housing as well.
New bracket and pins cost about 25.00@@edwintamasese9176
DANGEROUS REPAIR!
GET NEW PINS!
Nop not at all dangerous....jst adding some spacers won't change any braking performance. If youz change the pins you need new brackets as well or the sound will come back.
why not just use new pins they not very expensive.
did not fix for me. I used new pads and pins. After i brake the noise is gone and it repeats on bumps only when not braking.
Just new pins wont fix the issue. Need to replace the bracket as well.
@@dailyhandsdiy you mean the caliper the bracket only is there as a guide
Not the caliper... the pins and brake pad holding bracket. Its the brackets that wears out than pins.
Total bodge, that metal foil will only last a short while before it fails. Not an endorsable practice.
What’s the best method then ? Replace the slider pins or the whole bracket ?
@@TheShakir98 you have to replace the whole bracket.
Staffing kitchen aluminum foil inside brake calipers. What can possibly go wrong?!?
This must be one of worst DIY on CZcams.
