    According to the new schedule, there would not be a video this week because the video from last week contained an approach and the briefing in the crew room.
    Nevertheless, several viewers requested an upload every week - when possible. Even if it is just a part of a full video or a less detailed video.
    So I decided to publish a video this week. The video shows a full approach from the cruise altitude to Palma de Mallorca, but no charts and no checklists and no MCDU pages. Just the cockpit video and the audio.
    I hope you like this video even if it is not as complex and detailed as my "normal" videos.
    Have a nice weekend!

      Vielen Dank fürs gute Feedback und das Vertrauen in uns Piloten! Es gibt, zumindest rein sachlich gesehen, keinen Grund, Angst im Flugzeug zu haben. Der eigentliche Flug ist der ungefährlichste Teil einer jeden Reise. Die Fahrt mit dem Auto oder anderen Verkehrsmitteln zum Flughafen ist erheblich gefährlicher.
      Passagiere dürfen während des Fluges nicht mehr ins Cockpit. Allerdings ist es auf den meisten Flughäfen möglich, beim Einsteigen oder auch beim Aussteigen mal ins Cockpit zu schauen. Dazu bitte vorn einsteigen und die Kabinencrew an der Türe fragen, ob das möglich ist. Manchmal geht es nicht. Aber fragen kostet ja nichts und oft klappt es zumindest mal für einen Moment und ein kurzes Hallo.
      Ich wünsche viele schöne und vor allem entspannte Flüge!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I hopefully come up with a solution for this soon! It is very difficult due to the limited camera locations and reflections of the screens. For example: The ECAM display is usually recorded together with the PFD and ND. Due to bad light reflections, this part of the recording is not useable.

    Hey man, awesome video!!!! CPL holder here! Next month i ll be going for my A320 TR. Just wanted to know a few things. :-
    Does the engine power remain on idle throughout the descent? I suppose what you did here earlier was during the initial stages of descent your engine power was also changing and then you changed some mode later on where you were changing speed in the autopilot speed knob and the aircraft was tryinf to mantain that speed with altering descent rate and the power was on idle throughout?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před měsícem

      Thanks for your great feedback! In general, the most efficient descent is an idle power descent from cruise altitude to about 1000 feet. At busy airports, this is usually not possible due to the unpredictable traffic situation and ATC requirements. So intermediate level offs are needed most of the time.
      I wish you lots of fun and all the best for your Airbus typerating!

  • @Fakerbey
    @Fakerbey Před 2 měsíci +1

    Hallo Captain! thanks for the wonderful video.
    May I ask you please. In most of your take off videos I see you don't use improved climb take off speeds. What Eurowings SOP says when to use it? Thanks!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Could you please explain what improved climb takeoff speeds are? I never heard about this in regard to Airbus operations. It may be something from Boeing. We use a performance tool from Airbus called "Flysmart". It calculates the performance for the takeoff. We use the results for our flight. After the airplane is clean, the target speed is 250 knots below 10,000 feet. Above 10.000 feet, the target speed is calculated by the flight management system on the basis of the cost index and other parameters.

    • @Fakerbey
      @Fakerbey Před 2 měsíci

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ok. Maybe you can call it "increased V2 procedure" or "Advanced Take-off Techniques".
      If the runway isn't contaminated and enough length to achieve better performance takeoff speeds are higher by 8-10 knots usually.
      If at average take off weight your take off speeds around 130-145 this is normal procedure. If 150 - 155 its advanced.
      Have you ever got take off speeds around 150-155?
      I am talking about a319 and a320
      1+F

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the explanation! V2 at 155 knots for an Airbus A319 sounds very high to me. I have seen that on very long runways with heavy airplanes. But more likely on the A321. We use NADP 2 with thrust reduction and acceleration at 1000 feet above the runway. Usually, we fly faster than V2. If the V2 is 145 knots, we fly more likely 155 knots or even a little faster. So this looks to me like your improved climb. We also do Flex temperature takeoffs and use an optimized flap setting for all takeoffs. Higher speeds after takeoff delay the thrust reduction because instead of gaining more altitude, the airplane gains more speed.

    @motorcycleaddict50 Před 2 měsíci +1

    Great video! I recently flew from Gatwick to Mallorca Island last week for a holiday and I must say I really enjoyed the view of Alcudia and the mountains were stunning when we came into land on 24L. Really good ILS approach it was.
    We went via the Pyrenees, Andorra and Barcelona on the way down, but the Pyrenees was bumpy over the mountains, but it was a really clear view. On the way back was a different route, via Marsellie and through central France. I thought we maybe went that way because the Pyrenees had bad weather, but that is the standard route to the UK.
    Question 2: What is your favourite ATC coverage area in Europe, and why? I'd say mine is Spanish and English.
    I hope to see you land at Gatwick (LGW) soon!!
    Regards, Louis.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 2 měsíci

      Louis, thanks for sharing your very personal feedback and experiences! The routings which are flown by the airlines are dependent on the wind. We like tailwind or only a little headwind. Sometimes it is better to fly a route which has more miles. But due to the better wind, the plane will be faster at the destination. ATC is doing a great job everywhere. I have no preference in Europe. I like US ATC very much. The full airspace belongs to the US FAA and makes it much easier for everyone. Also, US controllers are very helpful. They provide visual approaches everywhere and fantastic shortcuts. Even the small airplanes and their pilots are treated very well. US ATC also provides free ADSB Weather uplink which helps general aviation pilots a lot. And the FAA offeres GPS approaches to almost every runway.

    • @motorcycleaddict50
      @motorcycleaddict50 Před 2 měsíci

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos That's interesting! I've only flown as a passenger to the US on a few occasions but not very often. Thankfully, when we got back to London Gatwick, we didn't enter the holding pattern. We were straight through.
      Also, was that the same pushback driver compared to your last video in Palma? It sounds like him! And how come you switched Airplanes?
      Sorry for another question: How many pilots would or have come through the ranks via the RAF (Royal Air Force in the UK) or the military/army? And would their flying be different to others?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 2 měsíci

      London airspace can be very busy. It may change rapidly during the day. We always plan a good amount of holding fuel.
      This handling agent was already talking to us in another video. He is great. Very friendly and motivated!
      The airplane changes are usually done to avoid ferry flights to maintenance. Düsseldorf is a maintenance base. So if an airplane needs to get back to the maintenance for a regular check or so, we try to cover this with airplane changes at our main destinations.
      After finishing the career in the military, some pillots continue in the civilian aviation sector. Years ago, as I was a first officer, I flew with a few of them. My impression was that the transport airplane pilots were great people who organized a nice cockpit atmosphere. They were used to fly with large crews and teamwork was never a problem. Some ex fighter jet pilots who flew alone or just with a weapon system operator, had difficulties in regard to a good teamwork or crew resource management.

    Hi Capt, question - what is the Declutter switch I see at 32:16, near the left side of both master warning/caution buttons? Because I thought Declutter is referred to the HUD on the A350s only. Hello from SIN/WSSS!

      You are correct! The switch belongs to a HUD. This particular Airbus has a HUD installed. But it has been deactivated. So we can’t use it. Greetings to Singapore!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před měsícem

      We compare for the VLS check the VLS which is displayed on the PFD with the VLS which is displayed on the MCDU. If the VLS on the PFD is higher, we add the difference between both VLS-speeds to the approach speed in the MCDU. Both VLS have - depending on the airplane hard and software - different sources. The PFD VLS is calculated by the FAC on the basis of aerodynamical data (measured angle of attack and our entered CG from the loadsheet). The VLS on the MCDU is calculated on the basis of the entered zero fuel weight from the loadsheet plus the remaining fuel.

      @@Ozbird-72 This is completely normal. One pilot holds the stick because he is pilot flying. The other is doing the radios. The push to talk button for the radio is at the stick. Also, the pilot monitoring needs to be able to take over immediately any time during manual flight. If both pilots would make an input at the same time, an audio massage “dual input” will be heard from the flightwarning computer. Also, there is a takeover pushbutton at the stick which you can use to deactivate the other sidestick in case of a pilot incapacitation.

      @@Ozbird-72 I completely disagree. The sidestick based fly by wire system is a great and proven system. It has many safety advantages in comparison to a classic non fly by wire yoke. The mentioned crash happened (if you read the final investigation report) because the pilots did not react in accordance to the published procedures after the speed reading was wrong due to a frozen pitot tube. Blocked pitot tubes are rare, but it may happen and we have to apply the correct procedures. We are trained for such things in the simulator. If you look into the Birgenair accident, you will see a very similar situation in a non fly by wire airplane. A wrong speed indication resulted in a crash because the pilots did not apply the correct procedures.

    Wir sind vor einiger Zeit genau wegen diesem Rückenwind mal durchgestartet (A319 von EW). Laut dem Captain hat er den Toleranzwert um 10 Knoten überschritten, ganz kurz vorm Aufsetzen - danach gabs auch eine Sightseeing-Runde, und dann die Landung in die andere Richtung (24L). Kommt das da öfter vor?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Mallorca Airport ist dafür bekannt, dass der Wind während des Anfluges auch gerne mal um 180 Grad dreht. Deshalb wird im Laufe des Tages die Landerichtung so gewechselt, dass man möglichst mit Gegenwind oder nur schwachem Rückenwind landen und starten muss. Es dauert allerdings etwas, bis der komplette Verkehrsfluss gedreht ist. In der Zwischenzeit kann dann auch mal der Rückenwind zu stark werden. Generell sind bis zu 10 Knoten Rückenwind im Limit, solange die Landebahn lang genug ist. Unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen sind eventuell auch 15 Knoten Rückenwind möglich. Es zählt der Wind, den der Tower angibt und nicht der Wind von unserem Display im Cockpit.
      Wenn Limits überschritten werden oder der Anflug instabil wird, starten wir durch. Das ist allerdings sehr selten der Fall.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před měsícem

      We want to depart and land with a headwind. We do not like tailwinds. My observation is that Palma de Mallorca prefers to use runway 24L for landings, even with a slight tailwind. This provides an approach over the island. Most of my landings have been on this runway.

      First of all: Thank you very much for being a member of the channel! The members are very important because their financial contribution help that the channel does still exist. Producing the videos is not only very time consuming. It also costs money for cameras, harddrives, software …. The members help to offest these costs a little bit.
      Platinum members get - whenever possible - an early access to the new videos. Sometime a day early, sometimes even a week or two.
      Right now, there are 2 fullflight videos exclusively available for the platinum members.
      Gold members have the advantage that comments and questions are answered with high priority. This is also true for platinum members.

      Manchmal sinken wir auch kurzzeitig mit 6000 Fuss pro Minute oder sogar mehr. Insbesondere, wenn wir erst nicht sinken dürfen und dann plötzlich eine Abkürzung bekommen, kann das notwendig werden. Das macht dem Flugzeug nichts aus. Die Passagiere merken es nur daran, dass die Pitch ziemlich niedrig ist. Die Sinkrate der Druckkabine hat damit erst einmal nichts direkt zu tun. Sie liegt irgendwo bei 350 Fuss pro Minute oder etwas mehr. Hier müssen bis zur Landung ja auch nur +/- 7500 Fuss abgebaut werden.
