- Today Jester Lu continues reacting to Fionna and Cake with Episode 6, "The Winter King"! This is maybe my favorite episode of the series so far - but not for the reasons you might think. I'm going to do a recap/review to this entire series once the reactions are over and I cannot wait for it~

I love the Baked with Love song and randomly sing it at my wife. But my lord how brutal of a death was that?! It just gets better and more brutal from here on out. I can't wait to see your reaction to the next episode.
Oh!! You are right! I thought maybe it was a reference to James Baxter, especially with the candy “beachball”ish transition at the end of the scene, but I forgot to take the gender swap element into account. That’s really cool as Prince Bubblegum relied on his steed Lord Monochromicorn in the Adventure Time episodes, and similarly relies on him in the human world.
Prince Gumball is Gary Prince in the human world.

Finns entire arc in the original show was to grow up to have empathy and deal with his anger issues. Hell, by the final episode he's trying to mitigate the Gum War by talking to Gumbald over actually fighting. This show is basically speedrunning Finns development with Fionna.
Yup, and the best part is that while Fionna lived in a "normal" world where she didn't _need_ to be violent in the first place, she worked a retail job so her aggression is understandable.
I personally think it's a little unfair to compare the musical sequences of Advernture Time with Fionna and Cake because A.T literally had 10 seasons, some with more than 30 episodes, to build musical moments. F&C only has 10 episodes and 1 season, and that's not enough time to have musical moments. It's basically limited time to develop characters and the story to have plenty of time with music.
Here's a cool little detail. When that the Candy Queen carts the Simons in with a wheelbarrow and say's "We're back home", it's a direct parallel to the first episode the Ice King appears in.
Gumbalee is always iconic
This is one of the better episodes, definitely picks up from here.

This is my favourite episode: but I loved all the earlier episodes too, particularly the first - which was a nod to the creator of Fionna and Cake, Natasha Allegri's own show "Bee & Puppycat".
So yes, this series definitely has great music between "Not Myself," "Part of the Madness," and the songs in this episode.
I was so happy to see Marshall Lee and Gary get their time to shine. Bubbline is great, but there's just not as much MLM content in animation so I always love when we get more, like in Nimona and here. Their date was so cute and I like that they have a different feel than Marcy and Bonnie's relationship.
(Its definitely getting better! the adventure time creators love the world they've made very much and have wanted to expand on it for a very long time, so they know what they wanna do and are putting a lot of love and effort into it)

So nobody seems to note this but Ice Marcy is likely only there because the real Marceline is dead. After 100 years of madness you think she wouldn’t have tried to stop Simon (without killing him) and likely got bumped in the process. Him having her axe bass is telling in itself
I think Episode 6 Might be my favorite episode, obsessed with the Candy Queen, but yeah at this point in the series it did feel like every episode was getting progressively better! With the exception of Episode Two and Three being swapped
Both songs where written by the same person who wrote songs for Over The Garden Wall

This was an uplifting episode. I lost interest in the show a few episodes back and it took me the better part of a month to revisit and this was just such a treat. Watching (prince?) bubblegum's world get shattered was heartbreaking, but his realization that he didn't need acceptance from critics and that Marshall Lee being there is somehow enough?!?! *tear*
On the main story, it also raises some real ethical questions on what scenario is best for goo? Should the madness be on Bubblegum and Goo live as a winter wonderland, or are they better off with Bubblegum calling the shots?

Honestly same haha, it really started picking up for me here and I agree on every point! Especially everything about the Marshal lee & Gary (still wrapping my head around that name for prince bubblegum lol) being fantastic - low key almost wishing that was the main story haha
I love this episode!! It might be my favourite. The songs, the develompment and everything!!!
This is in contention for one of the most beautiful art pieces in adventure time with Winter Wonderworld into a genuinely great villain song that balances humor with being actually threatening exceptionally well, all while having two well written and interwoven plots. Definitely one of the strongest episodes of Fionna and Cake imo.
I do get what you mean about the early episodes feeling slow. Episode 1 was almost entirely there to setup episode 2 and 3 (along with establishing the main casts in both worlds), while episode 4 set up the main plotline for the rest of the series. Setup episodes can be fantastic (Like Simon Petrikov), but more often than not setup episodes are there to make the reveal episodes stand out even more, and it's done quite well throughout Fionna and Cake imo.
Other side note, Winter King's Voice Actor is Brian David Gilbert, who did quite a few hilarious things here on CZcams (both on his own channel and with Unraveled on Polygon, which honestly is worth a watch, very fun and funny series)!

It definitely gets better as i goes. There is certainly a setuo at the beginning to define fionna and cake's relationship that makes you feel like if this is whattnhe whole show eith be its mediocre. But then they wack you in the face with "ha! You thought we werent putting our entire soul into this! Blasphemy!"
This episode had Wizard of Oz vibes
