Compare him with Albert Pierrpont, the British hangmen who also executed condemned servicemen and Nazi war criminals:
-trained under his father and uncle who were also hangmen
-took his job very seriously, described the execution as "sacred".
-definitely hanged hundreds of condemned civilian criminals in England before the war.
-had experience hanging German spies during the war.
-once botched the hanging of a spy who was putting up an intense struggle. The noose ended up catching on the prisoner's nose, which though unusual, ended up producing a perfect hangman's fracture and instant death.
-shunned press coverage and publicity, believed a proper hangmen kept a low or anonymous profile.
-was an expert in hanging. Trained Austrian executioners in the long drop method.
-this whole time he had other jobs; this was supplemental income.
-retired in the 50s due to a payment dispute, spent the rest of his time running a pub
-later said that he didn't regret his work, but thought the death penalty didn't deter crime.
Pierrpont was strongly considered for hangings at the Nuremberg trials but Woods was selected instead.
I firmly believe it was gods sense of humor. Having a barely competent executioner unintentionally tortured to death mass murders who precisely orchestrated atrocities seems just like karma well served

This is easy to explain... No one else wanted that job.
So, when Orders come down the line for a shit tasker... NCO's go around and ask people... if someone says yes... then... mission accomplished! No further requests made to find someone and command is happy and they like you because you found a person to fill the tasker. NO ONE will EVER check the QUALIFICATIONS of the VOLUNTEER..... because if you discover they aren't qualified... you have to go back to asking people.... then you run the risk of not finding someone in time and having to voluntold someone.... then everyone hates you.
Besides, how many G.I.'s wanted to come back from WW2 and their big story is, the executed other G.I.'s?
“What did you do in the war grandpa?”
“I tied a lot of ropes.”
There's still the question of how the lunatic was able to enlist, yeah, probably his documente were easily swallowed by the thousands coming by the day, but is still impressive he entered, got into problems and a bad history, he then entered again, got into problems again and this time he's fine
@@ollyoboomer7671 That's a bit easier to explain.
With war on 3 fronts, Africa, Europe, Pacific... no one cared about a prior AWOL event, they needed bodies. Article 15's are only deal breakers in current year ... not so much back then. There used to be a joke about not making E9 without having at least one article 15.
All eyes were focused on the war, not some guy not killing people fast enough. I am also betting whoever was in charge of him was more happy to be in Paris and didn't care too much about what he was up to.
Again, you weren't going to find anyone post war too sympathetic to how much a NAZI suffered in their hanging.
Lastly, a botch'ed hanging can happen. Miss-guess the weight of the person, length of rope and you can go from not snapping the neck to snapping the head clean off. I am guessing he got a crash course in England and was then sent on his way.
Yeah, it seems like he got offered the hangman's gig and then went and found a half assed book describing how hangings are done
@@kyleh3615 Well according to the wiki... he was a Private .... and he got an instant promotion to Master Sergeant for the job.... soooo, if you ever served .. that statement should send chills down your spine.
''The only action he saw was the d-day landing''
Well then send me to stalingrad
Couple of things: First, standard drop is actually less precise than long drop; it uses the same drop distance for everybody, which means that unusually light people will fail to break their necks (usually just breaking their tracheas and suffocating slowly) and unusually heavy people will be decapitated. The British used long drop (aka measured drop) with the falling distance based on weight and height; their executioner (Pierrepont) was also a sober and seasoned veteran. Woods, being a charlatan, had no idea how to do a measured drop hanging and apparently didn't bother to ask the British for help. Standard drop was much faster and didn't require him to do math.
Also worth mentioning that 100% of the people the US judicially hanged in WW2 were convicted of murder, rape or both. The military court-martialed and shot multiple soldiers for various military offenses (including one deserter), but they only brought out the rope for rape or murder. Likewise, the only people hanged by the US after Nuremberg were convicted of murder, mass murder or conspiracy to commit the same. Considering how easy it was to shoot a man (and how many were being shot in combat every day), hanging a soldier was a special mark of dishonor. You hang dogs and pirates by the neck, you shoot soldiers in the heart.
Why hang dogs? , I don't think other dogs will understand the example you are trying to make.
@@jonathantenman5937 I don’t think he meant literal dogs
Fucking based
It should also be added on from this many Nazi war criminals would have very abnormal weights either quite emaciated due to years of shoe-string rations that developed horrible diets (see literally all of Germany) or were ridiculously fat due to heavy gluttony and alcoholism (see Göring and Amön Goeth)
So unfathomably based I don't know what to do with myself

For anyone who wants to know how it's done, read into Albert Pierrepoint, the UK's executioner. Against the idea of executions himself, he thought of it as keeping suffering down to a minimum. A real hero is someone who does good whilst knowing they will be vilified.
Interestingly, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, whose name might ring a bell, was against capital punishment, but figured a more humane execution would be the baby steps towards abolishing it.
(He didn't invent the guillotine, but presented the idea, someone else designed it, and his name got attached.)
@@Kumimono Honestly i thing the Guillotine is probably the most humane way of execution. But point a : Capital punishment is immoral but well thats a different thing and B, the Guillotine is a bit of a spectacular way and especially of its done public too it also makes it kind of immoral. Well in more simple ways, its kinda fucked up to execute people with a Guillotine
@@Daniel-kq4bx One must remember, executions were public things back then. Carnival stuff, music, food, bring the whole family! And some folks are going to get hanged, or their heads chopped off with an ax. That can be messy. And crowds love messy. (Better hope the executioner knows his trade.) Guillotine game up with this, partly to combat that; a quick, efficient, boring execution. No fun for the whole family. Even the blade was later hidden, and the poor bugger getting his noggin chopped of was brought to the thing from behind a curtain. To reduce stress. :| And yeah, capital punishment is abhorrent. Just the times...
@@Kumimono Humanity really went through some fuck up times
@@Kumimono You know, from that angle, Guillotin's idea actually worked; With the fanfare removed, you just had someone getting killed. Interest gradually waned, and, with it, support for it all. I always wondered why they never used Albert Pierrepoint, Britain's hangman. I mean he was in Germany hanging Nazis at the time and that guy had it down to a art.
Probably because he sought not to cause the potential hung to suffer. He was the complete opposite of the stereotype hangman, he always showed respect to those he hung.
Most likely just institutional bias. A lot of people in the US Army wanted nothing to do with the British, and would avoid asking for their help even when it would do them good. The opposite was also true.

He kinda already covered it in the Pacific series. Not enough ressources mainly. Going to war with the US and Pearl Harbor was a huge gamble. Unless the US was too scared to fight back, they were pretty much done from the start.
Beyond the ones in this video, there are several other facts that might interest you and others watching. First, there were major differences between the British and American methods of hanging in the early 20th century. The drop length utilized by the British in their "Official Table of Drops" was adopted in 1913, and used until the British suspended capital punishment in 1965. British executions were efficient and not prone to failure. I believe American drop lengths were shorter (also known as short-drop hanging, versus the long-drop hanging employed by the British), and thus, were prone to a greater rate of failure, or they prolonged the time it took to die. The American drop lengths were revised in 1947 by the Army (it ended up more closely matching the British Table of Drops). Furthermore, the stereotypical hangman's noose that we are so familiar with was actually no longer used in Britain, while it was still used in America. Instead, the British used a kind of eye that formed the noose and kept the size of the noose stable. Picture a metal ring at one end of the rope, and the rest of the rope going through the ring- the noose is formed by the resulting loop. I'm not sure of the reason behind this, but if I had a guess, it would be that the eye method allowed a tighter and more controlled placement of the "knot" to allow a proper neck-snap; this placement was just behind the left ear. Considering that the British success rate at quick executions was far higher compared to the American success rate, I have a hunch I'm right.
Your assumption that "10 men in 103 minutes" was far too slow is spot on. Britain's last executioner, Albert Pierrepoint, was renowned for being able to lead a condemned person from their cell and have them hanging dead in roughly 12 seconds. With this in mind, consider how quickly the executions could have gone had Pierrepoint been used instead of Woods.
Pierrepoint was actually involved in some of the executions of Nazi war criminals, just not the ones at the Nuremberg trials. He executed 11 Bergen-Belsen officials (plus two others), hanging two men at a time (women were hanged individually). He took his role as an executioner very seriously. Typically, he would come to the prison the night before to set up the correct drop length and then conduct a "dry-run" with a sack the same weight of the person awaiting execution. He viewed his role as a solemn duty and believed that a criminal deserved respect and dignity in their final moments, for they were paying their price to society. For him, it was the utmost importance to conduct the execution with as much dignity and efficiency as possible. Compare that to Woods' comments.
If you're going to expand your reading on Woods, I think you should also look into the autobiography by Albert Pierrepoint, titled "Executioner: Pierrepoint." It would make a very nice contrast between the clumsiness and callous attitude of Woods, and the dignified efficiency of Pierrepoint. Great video on a very interesting topic!

Holy Molly how have I never heard of this guy before. He was both incredibly unlucky and lucky.
Real hangmen in the day were true professionals. The job was often a family affair, with several family members involved or the job passed from father to son. They knew exactly what they were doing, precisely how far the drop was to be based on the weight and other physical characteristics of the condemned. They took a great deal of pride in making sure the neck snapped as advertised. The guys who were hanging Americans in England were these types of characters. The Army should have known this Wood bozo was not such a hangman. They likely didn't care either.
