After a long wait, I have returned to cover the story of the first successful (technically) military submarine the H.L. Hunley and the mystery of it’s sinking. Although it did kill a bigh fuck off warship, it killed 4x more operators than enemies and was most effective at sinking itself. For this video we have a first on the channel, input and interview clips from two leading experts on the Hunley, Dr Rachel Lance and Michael Scafuri. Please check their respective organizations and books below, they both have done excellent work with the topic and if you are interested in the Hunley they have a ton of material on it.
It’s been a long break, and I appreciate all the emails and comments I’ve gotten showing support and concern, but I have a lot planned and am looking forward to a lot more videos. Be sure to share this one around and I’ll see you soon on the next one!

I'm not even an explosives expert and the fact that the submarine was right next to the detonating magazine of a warship got me thinking "gee I wonder if they got caught in the blast."
The depth charge theory is definitely the most believable. If they weren't killed instantly they were at least knocked out and sank to the bottom.
It's the only one presented in the video that I think explains why the remains of the crew were at their stations
I heard that the sub signaled 45 minutes after the husitanic sank
@@nightygamez3086 moonlight or another boat.
The only problem with that would be a blast strong enough to instantly kill or even incapacitate a human being would also be strong enough to heavily damage the vessel, Especially since blast waves are worse underwater. Now if you take that theory in conjunction with the lucky shot theory, then you have a scenario where the vessel *just* far away enough for the blast wave to not completely shred the hull, But still close enough for the blast waves to enter through the small puncture and wreak havoc on soft tissue killing the crew instantly.

To be fair to the seditionist slave owners participating in a frivolous slaughter over the idea of not treating other human beings like property, the mechanics of underwater explosions weren't terribly well understood at the time. There just wasn't an urgent need for it as naval combat was for the most part a surface affair involving exchanges of cannonade, although underwater mines (rather confusingly called 'torpedoes' at the time) were a thing. The actual mechanics of underwater explosions and how water actually amplifies explosive pressure wouldn't see intense research until well into WW2.
That said, as mentioned earlier, they were also told to extend the length of the arm because fifteen feet was too short, so it was recognized as a pretty stupid idea.

My theory is: That the explosion from the spar torpedo caused the crew to be knocked unconscious and also caused a hole that led to the eventual sinking in that spot.
Yeah, the giant bomb on the end of a stick seems like a rather obvious answer.
@@kokofan50 true
@@kokofan50 yeah
Yes, a research piece came to that conclusion since the detonation under water killed all the crew instantly.
@@Biker_Gremling ah right, well great minds think alike 😉
I think the blast explanation seems pretty reasonable
Like, if you have a massive explosion going off in the water only a few meters away from you, that’s not going to end well lol
You would've thought that someone would have said something about them putting explosives on a short stick and attaching it to the sinky death-tube, but apparently they had other things to do that day
@@gethinblake4826 People did say that, my best guess as to why they didn’t change the pole would be either ignorance or just not really caring.
That's a funny way of spelling 'feet' you got there. Ha! Meters. So funny.
@@subparusername9172 Or they may have been concerned about the pole getting snagged before the sub made its attack
@@VunderGuy Not being able to do a simple conversion in your head on the fly is also pretty funny.
So, let me get this straight, because a torpedo is "too risky", they decided to attach what is essentially a Pole with a Impact grenade strapped to it set like 4 inches infront of the hull?
Yes
16feet from the hull, but yes
No one ever accused the Confederacy of being smart
@@tyler1107 In fact, I'm fairly certain the stereotype is the exact opposite.
That was a torpedo strapped to the end. Back then, a torpedo was often used to refer to mines and underwater explosives. Self propelled torpedoes, what we just call torpedoes now, were several decades off.
I wish mythbusters was still around. I want them to test the explosion theory.
Mark Rober and the backyard scientist did a video where they discussed the physics of under water explosions cs human bodies and while it’s not exactly 100% applicable to this situation as they discussed the explosion’s effects in the context of a human body without any protection as apposed to being inside of a civil war submarine, I still think that the physics behind it is relevant, and honestly it’s just a cool video to begin with. I would just look up: Mark Rober and the backyard scientist grenade video (that will make more sense when you see the vid, assuming ofc that have you haven’t already seen it lmao)
Considering that depth charges are used to physically shake subs apart in the wake, not “destroy them” traditionally with explosive damage. So to me that’s SUPER reasonable that they all were instantly knocked out, sunk, and died
If Mythbusters could get enough resources together to prove the south couldn't win the Civil War that would be pretty cool.

The Hunley and the V2 are very similar in my mind.
Extremely forward thinking and advanced for the day, giving us a glimpse into the future of warfare but generally not having a massively noticeable effect on the outcome of the conflict.
Both were amazing for the time, but also limited by the technology of the time as well. I consider both to be failures, but really amazing failures.
Also, both funded by groups of genuinely terrible people.
Both also killed more of their own side then the enemy.

Living in Charleston, I vividly remember when they raised the HL Hunley from the murky waters of the harbor. I was only an elementary school kid, but I still remember thinking just how profound the whole ordeal was. Being able to go to the funeral where they were able to finally bury those men, who's remains still were left inside the preserved cabin of this craft, was a life changing experience. The HL Hunley was so far ahead of its time. It was brutally hot, deadly, and grueling; a marvel of modern engineering that would help propel subsurface warfare forward into what we see today.

i like how you made this video about this submarine.
i learned about The first sub in a Highschool text book and looked it up after i left school and saw most videos on it with 1K to a Few hundred views.
thank you for telling more about this historical submarine.
Here's a theory with little research - the boat's "air circulation system" already made the thing a nightmare to be in. The snorkle was up when the torpedo hit, the explosion sucked enough oxygen out of the boat that the crew asphyxiated and died while the boat drifted towards it's resting place.
Thanks for finally posting another video.
I love the internet “historian” level of editing.
It takes longer to make but it’s a cooler editing style

Considering I’ve done a research paper on submarines it’s awesome to see someone else confirm what I found out.
My boy I'm glad you're back!
Potential History: *Oh, I now remember my Password.*
Speaking as a medical doctor, during strenuous exercise, a person can deplete oxygen in up to about a cubic meter volume of air, per hour. Although I dunno what volume the sub had, 8 people, 8m3/h is significant, especially considering with 3.5 horsepower, they might have needed to work pretty long . And it wouldn't be all fine until oxygen runs and then you start choking, but you'd rather feel gradually exhausted and dizzy/sleepy. Now if you already have a reason to feel exhausted - ie cos of the work you just did - it might have been that you just wanted to chillax a few secs right after successful operation and fell asleep never to wake up.
Blast theory wouldn't work so well imo as the change in the medium through propagation of the blast, (water--->metal---->air--->person) should have greatly diminished the blast power, and as no collapse of the hull is reported, its highly unlikely it'd be enough to kill them all instantly.
I hope I'm not missing something obvious, like if they had a way to replenish the oxygen, since this take wasn't even considered in the video
I was legit scared that something happened to you, glad to see you back

Hey Potential, glad to have you back! If your in the mood for more Submarine stuff, checkout the USS Baton Rouge (my uncle served on it as a Nuclear Technician. And well, it had rather interesting history?)
Glad to have you back!
Hey water doesn't compress guys when you have stik with boom boom on the end mounted to the front your own put a lot of stress on the entire frame. a longer stick may have solved the problem, but a hardened bolt shears long before it snaps compression fittings are only useful if the vessel has a consistent pressure across all of the exterior parts. It's like crushing an egg difficult if the force is even but if it is lopsided it crumbles instantaneously.
It’s always a treat to see you in my feed, and seeing you cover stuff other than WWII is amazing.
Great job PH! Can’t wait for the next video!
Maybe its asphyxiation (or what ever the term is for lack of oxygen). The crew was underwater for while due to its slow speeds and not being at the surface to take air. The crew was pumping CO2 rapidly because they were working hard to move the boat. But I also can see how the blast can impact the air pressure inside the sub and cause lung damage. The ‘blue light’ must be the anomaly of the story, or at least not be sourced from the submarine.
This is exactly what I was thinking, unless somehow they took that into account when making the sub.
Dont forget that their lighting was likely candle wich...you know....consume oxygen
@@arthursalim3120 That’s a really good point. At this time period they should’ve been aware of oxygen deprivation as a danger in confined places. One of my science teachers taught us the story - medieval mining.
