  • The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle and the latest entrant into the Tesla Model Y-dominated midsize luxury electric SUV segment. The RZ 450e oozes luxury in a way the Model Y simply can’t, but is that enough in a segment where range is what matters most? Edmunds’ Clint Simone and Lauren McCay find out in our Lexus RZ 450e vs. Tesla Model Y comparison test!

      Edmunds - Lexus RZ 450e is built too HEAVY and too Expensive .
      the Interior & IP - Instrument panel are too Expensive.
      RZ 450e has too many Moving parts that can FAIL.
      RZ 450e has too many FASTNERS and too many Brackets , holding up MORE Brackets.
      and Instrument panel is too Complex w/ too many Buttons & Controls , too much CABLING & Weight.
      RZ 450e is too SLOW , too short RANGE and its INEFFICIENT.
      TESLA model 3 RWD is over 132 mpg. let that SINK in.
      AUSTIN model Y is the SAFEST Vehicle on EARTH. its made with 4680 battery, Structural battery pack, and Underbody GIGACASTINGS. all of which LEXUS lacks.

    The range is lower on the Lexus but you can tell the quality is better on the Lexus than the Tesla. I have Sat in both and you can FEEL IT. No way is an American car company going to have better quality. I just can’t see it nor feel it. Can’t say how many times I’ve seen numerous Teslas have glitching LED lights, misaligned bumpers, noticeable panel gaps. You can feel the flimsy plastic on the Tesla. You can make crap look delicious with sprinkles on it, but it does not make it a tasty treat😂

      "You can make crap look delicious with sprinkles, but that doesn't make it delicious" I think this statement describes the Lexus better in this case. Since the short range, charging, and acceleration drawbacks cannot be overlooked with just a more beautiful interior and softer ride. At 200 mile range vs 320mile range, the Lexus battery will like fail 33% sooner due to having to charge 50% more often than the tesla

    Charging infrastructure is not a valid point everywhere. There is ZERO Tesla chargers in my country, Estonia, EU. Also You will be charging at home here, since quick-chargers here is 6-10 times more expensive than home charging and will make you pay as you would have with a petrol car… Range, in my experience everyone lies. The best I had with Tesla in the city is 13,4 kw/100 km and with full spec RZ i got 16,7 which is not far off, considering AWD, Tesla Model 3 was RWD. Full one pedal driving would be cool but not a dealbreaker for me. What is a dealbreaker is waiting period of 24 months for the Lexus though.

    What's with the boy racer acceleration silliness? Sorry guys but let's show the car the way most people drive them in normal driving conditions. This Lexus, IMO, has an executive jet vibe about it yet it still uses understated, sustainable materials. I want real useful things put back in cars over bling and gimmicks and it delivers with a more efficient steering system coming and radiant heating that helps warm occupants and helps the HVAC system. It doesn't have that screen-dominant set up like most BEVs and that's a breath of fresh air. Beyond that, it's a Lexus and that's important to me .About range, I think range is overrated. This isn't any type of road trip car. But around town the way most BEVs are used, it's usable range.
    Model Y isn't even in the running. Great EV and such but the overall refinement is much lower than Lexus. Genesis, Cadillac, upcoming Volvo and Polestar, they're in the running. I don't regard the 3 or Y as premium cars. The S and X, yes, but not the 3 and Y.

      Range is still very important to most EV buyers, and while it doesn’t need to be a massive Lucid-like figure in every EV out there, barely managing 200 miles in a fresh 2023 EV is a huge demerit.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 Před rokem

      @@Mabeylater293 OK, you're right in a sense. It's just in the real world, who is brake torquing their cars to go 0-60? And when you do that, what happens to your range? Most Teslas I see are driven moderately. I guess there are people driving Teslas fast somewhere but I don't see many of them. I see some taking corners fast but mostly I see Teslas cruising at near the speed limit on the highway. So, this whole emphasis on acceleration that not only was done here, but is done by so many reviewers has just gotten old. When I drive BEVs, I'm into the quietness of the propulsion more than anything else.
      I hope we get to the point where we talk about EVs as cars. That's what they are. Now we're more talking about them as the novelty of the acceleration and their range. But I don't know a lot of people that drive muscle cars, v8 or v12 luxury cars, that care about gas mileage. They'll tell you about the performance in muscle cars and the smooth power of the V8 or V12. People in economy cars care about range and economy so why do we hear about for so much money it should have so much range and not should behave like a car for the money you pay for it whether it is in luxury, refinement or sports performance? So a lot needs to be done in the charging world where people just don't care about range and they'll just power up anywhere when need be. We are a long way from there.

    Great video and I agree with your observations. The night before I bought my Lexus RZ450e I seriously considered the Tesla model Y. I had test driven it as well as the Lexus. In the end I chose the Lexus because it seemed like the perfect car for me. I love Tesla, but the Lexus was just more luxurous inside compared to the stark Tesla cabin. My wife also has a gas Lexus, which we would take on long trips. once the Lexus Reserve program runs out in three years. I spend 98% of my time driving around town and charge my car about once a week on a home charger. In my opinion, no electric cars are convenient for long trips when compared to a gas or hybrid car. When solid state batteries come out, that should be a "game changer".

    Let's get a bit technical. The equivalent battery size for both models. Lexus/Toyota gets 30-40% less range. That's pure lack of efficiency and poor engineering. You could have a Lexus interior but a poorly executed EV or an excellently executed EV but a minimalist interior.

    • @markplott4820
      @markplott4820 Před rokem +7

      @benjaminsmith2287 Před rokem +16

      It's engineering priorities that I think a lot of people aren't seeing. Beyond range, let's look at some other things. They didn't talk about it but that variable steer by wire is solid engineering. And as far as minimalist interior goes, how is it better to keep looking at a big table display over having a judicious mix of buttons and use the display to further execute things? And on the S/X, the yoke steering is poorly executed in terms of where they moved the turn signals and placed the horn especially.
      Who says an EV has to be all about battery efficiency? Granted, that's some of it but what about how well it damps out sound since there is no engine? That's what an owner experiences on a daily basis. Shouldn't Lexus be credited for that? It's rather one dimensional, IMO, to talk of what the Lexus doesn't do particularly well without acknowledging what they're doing better on the EV front with this model. I also find the radiant heating to be something significant to bring into the EV space.

    Tesla owner here, I know you mention that you like buttons, and thought it to be easier and less distracting because of familiarity with placement. However, you can control climate and virtually everything in the car with voice command which means you never take your eyes off the road. It takes a little time to learn it, but once you do, it is much less distracting than having to take your eyes off the road and reach for buttons.

      @@edmundscars your number one priority is eyes on the road and voice allows you to maintain that. I typically wait for a pause in said conversation instead of interrupting. When I do use voice, it typically starts a conversation as to “how cool” it is that Teslas do it so well. Besides, the moment you search for buttons you’re already out of your conversation or away from your music and have become a distracted driver.

    I traded in my 2016 Lexus RX 450h F-Sport for my 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance. I miss the bird's eye view camera feature, the softer ride of the Lexus, and the premium build quality of the Lexus. But that's where the list ends. My Tesla still feels very well built, just not as refined as the Lexus. The Tesla is smaller in size overall but still feels much roomier than my Lexus did. SIGNIFICANTLY more storage space in the Model Y than my RX had. Then there's performance. Bolting off the line at a stop light never gets old. The response time and acceleration of my Tesla is superb. My Lexus did 0-60 in about 7 seconds whereas my Tesla does it in about half the time. I was very intrigued by the RZ when I first heard about it but when I heard about the range... that was a huge deal breaker for me. Extremely disappointing to have such a poor range in such an expensive car. Tesla feels futuristic with its minimalist design whereas the Lexus feels entirely more traditional. Tesla is bold and risk-taking while Lexus seems to have played it extremely safe with the RZ. The RZ is definitely for a different market than what the Model Y shoots for. Lexus has always been my favorite brand... but at this point, Tesla has won me over with its ingenuity, performance, and range. And don't get me started on the sound system. My Model Y has BY FAR the best stock sound system I've ever had. Mark Levinson who???
