- How does BMW… One of the greatest automakers in the world - build the ultimate driving machines…
That have become the ultimate eye sores?
What's happened to BMW's design?
Is it in any way possible that by creating a generation of cars that have been called downright ugly, they’ve set themselves up to come out swinging when the next generation of cars is a return to form?
Could this be the ‘New Coke’ move happening all over again?
They've certainly stirred the pot, and caused waves in the industry.
They're playing a bold game here. But isn't that kinda what BMW is known for? Isn't that what's made them successful?
Their willingness to take risks, to push boundaries, to lead rather than follow..?
Whether you love or loathe the new design direction, it's impossible to ignore.
BMW has always been an innovator, a game-changer. And right now, they're changing the game again. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they're making a statement, forcing us to pay attention. And in this day and age, that's half the battle won.
So, say what you will about BMW's new designs, they've certainly got us talking.
If we've learned one thing from the company that builds the ultimate driving machine, it's that they're not afraid of a little controversy. In fact, they thrive on it.
So what do you think?
Is it designing cars to meet the stylistic demands of a specific market?
Is the whole thing a giant publicity stunt where they know so long as they build good cars underneath, their current design gets people talking and enough people will buy them anyway?
Or is this the ‘New Coke’ situation where they change the recipe, cause all sorts of controversy, and then when they change it back they watch their stock prices go through the roof?
We're not really sure - but we'd love to hear your thoughts down in the comments!
On today’s episode of Blinker Fluid… we’re going to uncover exactly why BMW isn’t crazy for building what many think are the ugliest cars in the world…
And how they’re profiting more because of it!
Today on Blinker Fluid, Let’s get into it!

Dear China (if you’re indeed the reason for these designs), get some taste.
I think they're overcompensating..
Seriously I'm down for a war with China just for their taste
China: 绝不!我们优于所有设计!
China will buy BMW regardless of how they look simply for the prestige. Same with all the other mindless people around the world who want to be better than their neighbors. China are buying more because they have more people. Duh.
Y'all want to blame so bad...
@@TheFalseShepphardyou mean like those giant trucks?
Good design is something that you want the moment you see it, not after 5 years of getting used to it.
Exactly! For BMW money, the design should have you at hello.
Disagree. Your statement is targeted at the masses. Good design sets trends which often takes the masses time to appreciate it.
@@warrenber This isn't good design, they are just ugly.
It’s all a little deja vu for when the X6 was released 12 years ago. The masses hated it and the concept of an SUV coupe was blasphemous, yet look how successful the X6 has become. In all my years of driving luxury and sports cars, I have never been at a restaurant and had 2 different people come up to me to introduce themselves because they wanted to ask about the XM. It’s definitely love or hate and BMW definitely succeeded in creating a talking point and a concept for the future. It’s like a Jackson Pollock. To most they are a worthless canvas of non-sensical drippings yet some are prepared to pay tens of millions for them.
Not necessarily
I am Chinese and I myself also felt ludicrous with the humongous kidney grill. It is because in China, the bigger the grill means your got bigger status like boss. Meanwhile, my parent are very superstitious people and they forbid me buy to buy one even if I could. They says it is like driving with two large tombstones and this is bad luck.
You gotta tell that to BMW maybe then they will go back to making good looking cars
BMW is doing everything it can to raise the value of older cars. Thankyou BMW !.
Well said 💯
LMAO.... New huge grills are butt ugly !
Keeping depreciation of old BMWs to a minimum is probably a reason plastic parts are under the hood on modern new cars nowadays😂jk
Pretty much the case with most cars.
BMW just announced record sales for 2023 with sales of 2.55 million cars. Millions of people obviously disagree with you.
You might sometimes dislike a certain part of a car, possible the grill or the rear three quarter, but eventually you might get used to them & they might just grow on you. But, in the case of the current BMW car designs it’s not just the grill, it’s not just the lights, it’s the whole side & rear view, in fact it’s everything about the design, so I’m sorry but they are so bad that they will always be the exact opposite of what we have liked about a BMW. Good exciting sporty designs.
Nope. Shit is shit, no matter how much honey is on top of it
I will never buy a BMW with the current design.
Stop waffling, it's shit.
Dont forget the interiors… those dashboards are ugly
Sheep will be sheep though. BMW knows that they can make their car look like poop and people will still buy it.
I'm a middle-aged man well into his 50s...I remember with nostalgia the BMWs from when I was a kid, I'm talking about those from the 70s and 80s, in my opinion the best...They were charming cars with great build quality, and a sober and personal design!
It's a shame that they have become distorted, now they no longer convey anything positive to me..

I fall in love with everything Aston Martin makes right when it launches and I still love it 10 to 20 years later and beyond. The very best design is beautiful from the start and forever afterwards.
Exactly. And BMW was able to design beautiful cars like that in the past but not anymore.
As someone who had the f10, then g30, I’m now looking at other brands for a replacement…
Well done the designers…
Yup. In my 4th custom-ordered (F32), and it is probably my last. Sad.
same here. life long bmw guy, had several m's , z's and i'll never go back to them. what they put out now is just unforgiveable. i'll go for either a alfa stelvio or giulia. great looks, great driving, great sound and a ferrari motor inside....couldn't ask for more. also, much cooler dealers. i went there unannounced and could testdrive both cars without time limit and alone by myself. the guy even revved the giulia in the showroom while they had some delegation next. such a lad. try that at a bmw dealership lol. these alfas just know what a driver wants
"Subtlety has left the building" That can be said about some BMWs, but also Lexus cars and Audis ... The "uglification" of BMWs started with the E65 pre-facelift 7 Series and was reloaded in the new G70 7 Series.
I heard about him
many car enthusiast accused him of killing BMW back then
Unsubtle can be done well, and can be done poorly, the same with subtle, it’s not that BMWs have become flashy, look at the i8, it’s flashy and beautiful, it’s that they’ve become ugly.
Some designs are just not proportional so they’ll never look good. The pre facelift E65 was ugly when it came out and is still ugly compared to the facelift and the F01. I’m hoping this is just a phase for BMW and they’ll facelift these cars to make them beautiful again
@@hugonubario Except Bangle's designs have gone on to age well, at least, in my opinion. More and more people are starting to come around Bangle's designs. If his designs were considered unbearably ugly to the point where BMW enthusiasts and purists have accused him of "killing" BMW, that's because they weren't ready for his design style compared to the boxy BMWs of old. Fast forward years later, other automakers would model their designs after his style and thinking. Besides, Bangle followed BMW's design principles, like the angle eye headlights and Hoffmeister kink. Modern BMWs, on the other hand, have nothing in correlation to the old BMW design elements.
The uglification started with Chris bangle, most obviously with the terrible Z3.
I heard that, to the Chinese, the Rolls Royce, with it's large rad grille, is the ultimate status symbol, so for this reason they prefer large rad grilles.
How about Tesla Chinese try to copy their design with no grille.
I mean they’re also clowned in Asia for having bad taste in about every way, fashion, cars, interior design. This is only true of mainland Chinese. A lot of Chinese diaspora in in other parts of east and SE Asia look down on mainland Chinese.
Seems to me the Chinese only care about status symbols, to show off they have money, that’s why they eat shark fin soup, which tastes hideous but is super expensive, they buy rosewood furniture which is nearly extinct but very expensive, they don’t care if they destroy the last rosewood tree, it more important to show off.
In China, a lot of people have money but no class. They wouldn't know how to behave themselves or act normal even if they tried.
@GF-mf7ml Chinese have no thoughts of their own, if tesla design language is hype, they'll all run to buy that.
I’ve been a loyal BMW driver for years and put up with the maintenance and depreciation. No more! I have two Porsches now and hope to never look back.
BMW should build another product line for enthusiasts with original BMW design language and with loaded new technologies. New design language gives me stomach ache. I am still struggling to accept the front grill of G80 which leads the terrible looking front end.
If BMW thinks that their “Beaver Tooth” front grills and chaotic body lines are going to “grow on me”, I suggest they take a long look at Acura’s “Beak” era - ugly is ugly - and that can be a huge turn-off for some buyers.
If this is an exercise in catering to the Chinese market, that’s fine - BMW can make that choice, but don’t be surprised when a competitor comes along and eats their lunch in other markets.
I've never purchased a BMW. My next car coming this summer, is a M440i X convertible. The design, as well as the motor, convinced me to put my money on the table.
i wish they could just remake the 528i E39, so many memories in that car
For 11 years now my 523i , E39, 1997 is still running. Norway. Last sommer in France and Switzerland. FurkaPass. 👍
Sold my E39 a few months ago n I miss it. That car was awesome. Owned it for 10 years and I feel like I need to get another one. To me the E39 is the last of the great looking BMWs
The F13 is a great looking BMW though ...
Tell me the truth, was it bad in terms of reliability as people says?
I was a fan of bmw since childhood only new design made me sit my soul down.
I use my 523i, E39 a lot. ,,,,,,, I also have 525i/E34 and 316i/E36 compact. If lucky this motors can run for many years. 👍
@@boxoffisa I had an E39 M-Sport a few years ago, it was fairly reliable but it ALWAYS leaked oil, mostly from the rocker cover. They're renowned for it.
I have never had a BMW and planned on getting an M4 G series until I saw it. It hasn't grown on me. Alfa Giulia QV for me now.

hey donald!
No matter what the E90 3 series is the best looking BMW in my opinion as it is the generation that I've grown up seeing and is what BMWs should look like.
Personally love the old ones, but the e9x series has aged pretty well. e92 works for me.
I loved my e92. Wish I kept it. They still look good.
No chance. F10 and F80 best of the best 👌
Interesting analysis. I have heard that BMW is not the highest purchased luxury brand like they were a couple of years ago, being ousted by MBZ and/or Tesla. If that is true could the design language they are following be the cause of that? I am a BMW owner for the past 20 yaers and its hard to love the look of their cars now.
Tesla is not a luxury brand
@@kiefydoinks If you consider pricing it would be considered a luxury brand. Do you consider it a bargain brand like Honda or Toyota? I think not.
@@dtman315argain brands?
The TOYOTA is the top of the food chain in car Category.
The most reliable and people want it.
1 brand is Toyota and Lexus are beautiful car.
Your american and Europian car are completely garbage in terms of reliable, fuel efficient and SALE around the globe.
Teslas are very average when it comes to pricing and quality (maybe below average quality) look at the prices of a Taycan, that’s a true luxury EV. Compare that to a Model S. The price difference is shown in quality. Electric vehicles are just generally more expensive upfront. You can’t compare them to gas powered cars in price.
BMW, MBZ and Tesla are not luxury cars, just mass produced fleet cars.
I found a pattern, the iX, M4, M2, XM, 7-Series are the example of commonly hated cars. I hated them at first too. But then about a year or so, I somehow started to love them. I seriously think they're beautiful. Maybe I'm weird but it's just my preference so please don't judge me for my taste. But one thing we all know is that BMW's always been like that and they still drive great.
im not judging you but from a design stand point the cars design just doesn't flow and it is genuinely hideous also the fact that the cars don't follow much from their ancestors either
Not me. But then I'm not a fickle tart.
The m4 is basically a ford mustang mixed with honda accord coupe with bmw logo in the front an the back , had nothing to do with bmw , an the issue with m3 design is not the shape of its body nor the fenders , those looks good tbf , the biggest issue with m3 design is the bumpers both of them an the front grill only , those r the things that makes this car so so ugly , I believe if those two things got a redesign from other person than the current rubbish designer I think the car will look fantastic , the new m2 I believe the designers were Influenced by the game called roblox they were looking an playing with it a lot to the point that they had to to do a real live model ..
@@lerayonnantgouter Yes - very disappointed with the M2. If I were to buy one now it would be the previous F22 for sure. Much better design all round.
the ix sure but xm and 7 series is not a I hated them at first....
x5m is so much better and cheaper than the xm in every possibe way
How did they mess up that bad
I don't think they did. These new grilles look good to me. They look great on the road, especially the M4 and M2.
@@robertnicholls9917 Especially m3 g80 in black mannnn
Interesting perspective. I’ve had several bmw’s e30, e36, e46 (my favourite) and e90 (yes, this one was a bit uglier). They were all great to drive and looked nice. I came back to BMW in 2023 with a new g87 M2. I ended up selling it after 3 months - I just couldn’t stand to look at that ugly thing - everything about it was hideous, and it didn’t even drive that nice as a daily driver - it was DULL and BORING to drive, and I even had the manual! Yes it was fast and handled the road well, but it was so dull - it didn’t feel like an edgy sports car. I now have a Giulia Quadrifoglio - so happy, looks fantastic, drives like a dream, and is fun even at slow speeds.
The idea that if everyone likes the design at release is a "bad" thing in the long run is kind of interesting; but doesn't explain how other brands can pull it off. For example, if you look at a Ducati motorcycles, there are few people who can say it looks bad, even after years pass by. Same goes for Ferrari, Porsche, Audi (although I quite dislike Audi as a brand) etc.. When you look back at it, even in today's standards E46 3 series are beautiful cars for most people and was beautiful when they were first released. BMW is one of the brands that have really inconsistent history of car design in the recent decades. They make it look really good in some generations, and really bad others. At least the other brands are consistent with whether they make good, average or bad looking cars, BMW is really bad at it. I think the problem is with their design department and trying to justify it is just trying to find excuses.
If some of these cars didn't look like copies of Korean cars, it wouldn't bother me so much. Admittedly, they are IMPROVED designs, but I still get "Kia" vibes from them.
It’s actually the other way around. Kia poached Karim Habib from BMW, as well as Peter Schreyer from Audi.
@@donkedic1 Didn't they release the Kia vehicles first before BMW took this approach to the design? My neighbor has had a Kia for at least 2 years before BMW released a similar SUV, again with an improved design, but the similarities are obvious (to me).
@@jaybockstoce It’s always been a game of “what came first…chicken or egg”

Hyundai, on the other hand takes queues from Volvo. But that’s just me…or is it?
are you shocked? asians own most everything, and I think they own German car companies now and maybe aren't really letting it be know that they do, I bet thats the case.

The XM won't grow on my, because literally all SUVs are hiddeous! Looking hiddeous is just one of the few things that SUVs do well.
the x5m looks very good tho... from all angles. XM on the other hand is disgusting...
Great show and very interesting thank you very much for the update 😊 from Sydney Australia
The most recent 4 series is the reason I gave up after 8 BMW s. That and no standard.
It happened to me when the 2015 hilux was introduced. I flat out hated it since the 2014 was arguably better looking, then the 2021 facelift came to be & now I'm willing to buy one.
Another example is the G30, as beautiful as it could be I favoured the F10 more untill the M5 did debut, first I didn't like the AWD powered M5 untill I drove one which was MENTAL to put simply.
The hilux take is shocking. I found the car stunning when I first saw the legend 50. I only happened to see the legend 55 last year and I can say that design to so beautiful.
@@chabu2306 agree but the initial shock we've received in middle east divided people in 2.
As an upside the stainless steel front bumper was an hommage for the 2002-2005.
On the down side the front facia of the Vigo champ was a true hommage to the same models.
And the comparison to the 2002-2005 model years is that they're sought after in the Middle East as the E30 M3 to the rest of the world.
yea h i dont trust like that
So true I owned many Camrys when The new model came out I hated the rear tail lights then 2 years later I bought one it's looks grew on me cheers Stephen 🤠
Had a 2015 428i. A beautiful car. No way would I touch the new 4 series. Just horrible. For the time being, at least, I'm content with my Model 3.
I look at it from a society-wide perspective: A level of grotesqueness has been embraced, be it obscene wealth, disgustingly opulent mansions, products that serve little purpose other than displaying one's wealth, the behavior of actors and actresses, musicians, corporate leaders, politicians, even the president. It's a race to the bottom. In this context, ugly design is coveted. When simply owning luxury items doesn't give a person that sense of superiority, shoving shit in people's faces and telling them to "deal with it" scratches that itch.
Went from beautiful looking cars to pig noses
I lost a lot of interest in the Corvette due to shortages and price gouging. When that blows over, I'll probably start loving it again.
As for me the E39 and E46 is the most beautiful design in BMW history.
The E60 and E90 looks just okay for me , even though the design is out shift from it origin DNA .
And lastly the E30 and E36 are a proper Ultimate Driving Machine for track day.
E46 as weekend track car, E39 for everyday commute 😀 in the modern era M2 F87 CS and M5 G30 respectively
The e46 hasn’t dated that well - loved them when they were new, not so much now. The e92 has fared much better in the looks department. An e30 weekender and e92 daily drive work well for me :)
E46 M3 is the epitome of the perfect car - to me, at least.
The E92 M3 is a great looking car, and to me a step above the E46, and I’ve owned both of them
They both look better than that new pig-nosed thing. That being said... I still cheer for the new one on the track LOL. @@993mike

The reality is that BMW is not catering to a small group of BMW enthusiasts. Majority of buyers, who never owned an older BMW model, are likely buying it due to the modern look/interior/features as evident by the increase in revenue every year (back to back) since 2020.
Chris Bangle definitely had a dud here and there, but I think he deserves praise for moving the styling forward not just for BMW, but all carmakers. As for what's happening to BMW design today... I don't know. There are so many elements that to my mind simply do not belong on a BMW, but maybe the buying public disagrees with me.
just make the grills smaller, thats all
Nah I own an E90 and I always loved this era of BMWs. The new designs have so much going on the mind can't rest on and admire anything in particular. They are different looking cars but they are not generally good-looking cars anymore.
I agree, he made the e92 which is a beautiful car. Made BMW look modern but still tasteful and classy.
the problem for me isn't the new design language per se, but the poor execution of it. there is little consistency across the design and it's clearly been overdone to the point where it falls apart. they could have hired much more talented designers who could have pulled it off i am sure.
They do hire them
These designers can't stand Van Hooydonk POS and do leave without changing anything
BMW lacks to produce best drivers cars o er a decade already
The best driving BMW of today still wears the logo of a Toyota
No matter how hard I try, I can never change my opinion on the iX and the XM. The iX looks like someone pulled down their pants and took a photoscan of their ass cheeks and stuck it to the front end. And the XM looks like a literal Roblox knockoff BMW car. I don't care about the performance figures they give.
Roblox knockoff 😂

I’m a long time BMW fan and have owned several over the years. While poor design is certainly not unique to BMW, I’m now ashamed to let anyone know I was a fan. Most are merely eyesores. Their cars are completely off my radar. Couple this with the fact that most BMW’s lose value rapidly when bought new and it’s obvious the company is certainly not the manufacturer it once was. I used to lust over BMW’s. No more, I’m done.
I said this 15 years ago, people laughed at me. BMW, Mercedes are designing their cars to please the Chinese customer. And the Chinese guy who pays premium for his BMW, wants it instantly recognizable among the one million cars in the Chinese traffic that he drives a BMW and not a Buick or an Chevy. Hence the barndoor sized grills.
They just wanted to give the old Beamer a bigger smile 😀
Alfa Romeo has a much better-looking lineup and a great alternative!
Honestly I think the sedans & coupes with the giant grilles look really nice

I totally agree with theory #3. This is exactly who I am, everytime the is a new release, i'm like WTF is that (Especially when the E60 was released) but I always come around. Like you said, we know what lies beneath these exterior designs and that is what keeps me coming back to BMW.

That would make sense for the gasoline M Cars. But what about the hybridized or electric ones? Now that is by choice.
i hate how stupid the car community has become. js
I think the problem with new designs is not the front facia , more like inconsistent design cues , as if each part of the car is designed separately, then blended together, imo.
The cars require more air. PC's used to only need 2 small fans and now they got 9 or more 120mm on the😊 front, side bottom, and top. 😂
Desktop PCs have so many fans nowadays you’d think the thing was an air conditioning system from the 1960s😂jk

I am reading the comments and I am thinking to myself, am I almost the only one that loved all BMW designs as they came out. Even looking at the older cars I think those kidney grills are too small.
At first I laughed at how big the grill was on the G80 series then fell in love with the design. They look even better on the circuit as a GT3/ 4 car.
ikr!! g80 is crazy good!!
BMW have always been innovators in performance and handling of cars that were conventional.
They haven't taken too many risks in the looks department till recently. I personally don't like the designs except for the 2 series... but it would be nice to see BMW go back to the classics! I think the AR Giulia has become what an old 3 series would've been. Would be nice to see BMW go back to their roots.
but i love the new m3... I cant imagine the new m3 with the f80 front anymore... it just wouldnt look modern or right.
@blocksource4192 wouldn't look modern or right? Lmao... you really need society to guide you huh?
I loved the design of the Giulia when it first came out. Now, if it wasn't for the triangle grille, the car looks like a Toyota or maybe a Honda. Not all of BMW'S current designs "float my boat", but in a couple of years, they should still be interesting to look at. I must be OK with the new design direction as I just got a '24 M340i (which I think looks stunning).
Ugly is ugly, I spent 2.5 hours in a BMW dealership to customize my M4. I tried very hard to tell myself it looks good, I changed my mind at last and went to get a Mercedes...
you valued looks over driving feel.
I’m one of people who like the big kidney grill than normal kidney grill. I feel like big grill made the car look more attractive especially series 7 and XM. Damn I’ve never seen the grill has light before.
F90 M5 and F80 M3 was the peak of BMW engineering
I just cant accept the new headlights and grills
I miss the look of my once 1981 shark nose 320i. 😧
the first m3 will forever be ny jam ❤️
All i will say is watch (Ben Hardy why people are choosing BMW over mercedes) he talks about how with this new generation of cars bmw has SKYROCKETED in sales. So people do love the new direction. I use to hate the new m3 and m4 but loved their performance. With some simple aftermarket options and grilles like the adro ,Vorstiener, or csl grille they look so aggresive and dope. It also makes everyone m3 or m4 look unique and different depending on what grille they use. BMW are genius
I drove BMWs for 30 years, including M5, 750i, 335i, 550i, so I was a loyal customer for a long time. Today I can't identify myself with the actual design language, that I name ugly for the most of the lineup, probably because I'm neither chinese nor arabic...
That's why Edsels are so cool now!
I've had BMWs for the last quarter century, but I skipped the Chris Bangle years (hated the E60, kept my E39) and I won't be getting any of these monster rad grilles.
get the m3 g80.... actually a good drivers car.
In my opinion, the G20 series (minus the M3) is the best looking generation. Looks good everywhere inside and out. Symmetrical and balanced.
I love my G22. I always liked the 4 series and loved the 6 series. Now, I get the best of both worlds.
I owned an E39 for 3.5 years. WORST FINANCIAL DECISION OF MY LIFE! Yes, even the "economical to repair" BMW is ludicrously expensive to keep on the road. I spent approximately $18,000 on maintenance in that time, and no, it was not an M5, it was a 525i. Plus, I only did about 10K a year in it! I replaced it with a brand new Mazda3 in 2022 and couldn't have been happier with that decision!
Don't hire a design chief named Hooydonk and then get mad when he does Hooydonk things.
I don't think they're doing anything different. All these car companies are doing big over-the-top grills. It would have been nice to see them going a different direction.
There are not many manufacturers left who at least try to have some elements of "classic beauty" in their cars. Looking at these contemporary and modern cars, it seems that almost without an exception, manufacturers produce aggressive-looking Robocop cars.
Since the front is made of plastic pieces that can be removed abd replaced, couldn't they offer two front variants of a same model car, one for buyers with classic taste and another one for those who prefer a daring innovative looks.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 BRO THE THUMBNAIL PIC LOOKS SO FUNNY XD TY FOR PUTTING THAT THERE I WOULD SUB IF I WERE U
That signature grill be getting bigger and bolder 👊
I would like to have heard an analysis as to whether there is a clear engineering reason for making large air intakes.
absolutely not. the opposite is true, with modern technology you dont need such massive grills at all.
@@guguigugu
Thanks, do you have any link or anything to help support this?
My one question or suspicion, as I watched the BMW grills get bigger, was that more oxygen intake helps develop more power, and that may be the point.
Also, wasn't it around this time that F1 vehicles started having a kind of upright nose? That seems quite farfetched as to whether it could relate to what was going on in the BMW vehicles, but it's the only other thought I could come up with (if it has anything to do with function at all... perhaps it really is just aesthetic.)
I still don’t get the outrage about the 02 745 and E60 5 series styling. They made the boxy bimmers look like vintage 50s car and were so ahead of their time they still look modern today
I thought that it had to do with cooling, at least partly. Bigger grill means more air in, hence less risk of overheating.
I agree with your second option. We are all here debating and questioning the design because we were made to care. Smart? What can make a car enthusiast care for a particular brand in a time of (mostly) boring cars? Think about the XM (a much bigger i3), and the I3 it self. Some love it (I do) some hate it, but everyone recognizes one and talks about them. They can be unorthodox but they sure are interesting and, mainly, instantly recognizable. Smart, very smart. I don’t think China is the reason. Remember Bangle’s design controversy? No China (like today) back then. It’s, in my modest opinion, in the fabric of BMW design philosophy. I love my f10 design (much more conventional design) but I really can’t get enough of my i3. It’s made with such care, so much innovation it amazed me (and still does). Having said that I really miss my e36.
IMO the biggest drivers of modern awkward designs are crash worthiness, pedestrian safety requirements, and additional cooling modules for all of the new environmental regs that are almost all government mandates.
All blacked out new 7 series, hides that massive grills and IMO makes it look a bit better
Same here the I preferred the old m4 then the g82 became my dream car
Deliberate, and devious.
Every few years, luxury car makers radically change their design language. Doesn't really matter if the designs are questionable. Only matters that they make older versions look out of date.
Get vain people to buy new so its not obvious theirs isn't current.
If new look is radical and edgy, even better.
so why did bmws look the same from 2001 to 2018....
@@blocksource4192 well, they changed quite a bit during that time frame. Sure, not as radically as they did after that. They just got 'better' at making radical changes.
They learned how important that was, and how they could make such changes without losing sales. That they could piss off their loyal base, but still get enough sales from public at large.
Lexus started the big grill theme and now every car manufacture are doing it.
A BMW manager recently said: "We design our cars to please the customers, not the critics" Nuff said.
Got to give them credit for making cars that look more 'futuristic'
I like that. Instead of ultimate driving machine, they're the ultimate eyesore. 100% correct
Don’t really mind the new looks however reminds me of the 1990s Pontiac Grand Am.
what i think the best bmw design is previous generation of m4 and F80 , those are some of the coolest bmw in exterior terms
The main problem with those giant plastic grilles is that catch a lot of rocks and cost a fortune to replace!
The grill for my G22 to replace is less than $200 and can be changed out in 20 minutes.
@@josephhein9497 how many times has it happened to you so far?
@@philtucker1224 not once. I was just considering replacement with a different style. Mine has the chrome trim. Wasn’t sure I liked it at first but it’s grown on me.
I was at the BMW dealership yesterday. Out of a 100 cars, only two looked very good. They front ends were just offensive.
Owning the previous 5 series, I was shocked when the current, new 5 was introduced. But - it’s grown on me, I really like the design now.
They can do whatever experiments they want, and set up whatever marketing and advertising schemes they want, as long it's not with my money. What is beautiful is timeless, what is ugly is…also timeless. I will always buy a car, firstly, for its appearance, and then for the rest (performance, comfort, ..). But the look, the aesthetics, has to be there from day one, or it's just a wast of time... and money.
Waiting for time to pass, in the hope that the car's look "grows on me", is absolutely ridiculous. These are the type of arguments that people with no taste can use, to comfort themselves with the sad choice they made.
Fortunately, there are still brands and models today that are excellent alternatives, and those are the ones I want to drive.
Even worse than their design department is their engineering which has been going down the toilet for 30 years, producing cars that out of warranty become money pits.
