    An in-depth discussion of how Eric Kirby could have survived on Isla Sorna. The movie didn't show us what happened, so it's up to our imagination. Here are my thoughts.

    I believe this movie could have been made much better if they would have rather focused on Eric's survival and his entire stay in Sorna and topped it with some of Dr. Grant's fantastic instinctive scenes. First 45 minutes should have depicted Eric's survival and the next 1 hour or less could have been a rescue operation where his parents were shown to a minimum. Just the story of them separating and engaging Dr. Grant deviously is enough. The adventures on the island were definitely thrilling in the second half and could well be a part of this operation. If they would have done it this way, they could've covered more dinosaurs, explained the entire Isla Sorna setup and also engaged the audience.

    Wow this gave me more thought to the Eric. As I once thought of him as a "lucky child" who survived because plot armor. I couldn't imagine a world where a 12 year old survives on dinosaur island for 8 weeks by himself. I find it amazing how smart, calm and collected Eric was despite his situation. And running into that dangerous bastard Spinosaurus and surviving the encounter makes me like Eric as a character even more.

    • @vnleao
      @vnleao Před 6 lety +17

      Pat Teh Duck Kids can be very adaptable and are more survival driven than adults. An adult would be more likely to prioritize getting help/off the island (because of a sense of "I'm an adult, I should be capable of getting out") whereas a child would be more likely to immediately resign themselves to the fact that they are stuck and start looking for survival options in hope adults would rescue them eventually. Kids also tend to be more single-minded and more creative in problem solving because they spend less time having existential crises or quasi-theological debates over _why_ the situation happened to them. They aren't thinking about "oh God if I die, who will help my spouse pay off our mortgage?!" Kids are used to being subject to circumstances they might not like while having to work around obstacles (adults) that tend to be threatening to their will. If you think about it, dodging velociraptors isn't necessarily that much different than dodging parents. They both have a very deep, instinctual draw to find you and get you under their control, both are stronger and bigger than you, and both can be very intimidating. Now let's cue the existential crisis for adults about how Eric's survival is actually an allegory for surviving childhood and we all still have an inner Eric that's terrified of the dinosaurs around him but, like Eric, we've learned to work around them and we might even have a Rex for a boss at work and we tolerate the monster because we feel powerless to do anything and we all just want someone to come in and rescue us and the only sense of security we brought with us remains dead in a tree (unresurrected Christ figure) and we cry out at night wondering why life feels like we're just filling up the time until we die with meaningless activity and cat memes to avoid raptors and Rex's.

      The only real difference between a island paradise and a island of immanent death is weather or not you are worthy to not only figure out the trick to survival, but also do it so well that you actually don't want to go back to all those horrible people in that place you spent years forced to call home, surrounded by countless billions of both nabors and passing pedestrian and car traffic per hour. You finally get to have a vacation from being crowded. You finally get to be alone.
      The number of herbivores is just right. If it was not so they would devower the jungle. The number of carnivores is just right, if it was not so they would devower the herbivores, thus their isn't enough company to feel crowded.
      Also their is the beautiful jungle rather then the ugly mess people have a habit of accidently replacing jungles with.
      Perhaps you could decide, I don't want a ship to spot me on the beach. Don't you know their are pirates in Coastarica? They favor the Israelite assault rifle and only a few years ago it was discovered they have their own cargo submarines for smuggling marawana and are even built with comfort in mind. What if it is a crew of pirates who come to your "rescue"? You may be safer with the spino.
      Heck, the spino would probably not be so hard. Just set a spike fence and let it charge into them. It don't know the big pointy things will hurt it, its just a dumb animal. But a pirate with an RPG? Count me out on that one! Oh look, the dumbass spino killed its self on my spikes, meat and hide to last the month. Hide armor and hide shield, perhaps with some javelins made from the scrap metal of the facilities hide and a stick from behind a hide shield. At least you may clip 3 or 4 raptors before the 5th gets you if you are forced into that situation. Don't mess with raptors, numbers are a decisive factor to that battle, but if you have to stealth them out when they are alone, then hide in a tree. Assuming the smell of the spino hide don't scare them off anyway.
      If compys come for you don't let them bite you. Their bite has a tranquilizing effect, but every once in a while before going into your shelter just spear one and drag it in, then break its neck. Even if you can't make fire if it is fresh and warm it shouldn't be a problem, many cultures enjoy a good raw steak as it is. But if you can make fire its better to make it into jerky and save up on it.
      Never mind, the main cast just arrived. I suppose we could just finish our movie.

    I don't believe the pee theory simply because JP3 refuted it, at least amongst the Sorna rexes. I believe that Eric may have traveled into Rex territory while running from raptors. Noticing that his captors refused to take another step towards him, Eric would have racked his brain trying to figure out why they gave up. Then he'd smell it. Ammonia, like his face was wrapped in a hospital biohazard bag. After realizing that it was pee, he wondered briefly what animal's pee it was. Then he saw the corpses. The skeletons. And the gawky little bipeds cowering nearby, huddled together like puppies. He knew instantly where he was. A Rex nest. Eric, now knowing that this was Tyrannosaur territory, knew he had to leave. A not-too-distant roar told him that an adult was nearby. Feeling the ground start to shake, Eric suddenly realized that he was trapped. Leave, and raptors pick up the chase. Stay, and he'd become a happy meal. Without any more hesitation, Eric scooped up the peepee dirt and rubbed it all over him, all over his clothes and hair and every part of him. The big rex was getting closer, he could hear it just past some dense trees nearby. What to do? What to do? The rex was here. No more time. Eric dove into the nearest cover he could....a rock formation directly across the clearing from the staring baby rexes. The adult arrived; huge, brownish-green with faded stripes down its back. Eric watched in awe, taking in every detail. The animal was muscular, it looked like every inch of it was filled with rock. From its jaws hung a beheaded corpse, light-brown and enormous. The rex chicks left their cover and chirped excitedly. The adult set the body down, expecting the chicks to start digging in. However, they just continued chirping and jumping around. The adult lowered its head to listen to its children, and from their mad chittering, gathered that there was something strange in the nest. The rex sniffed. It didn't smell anything, nothing but meat and pee. Smelled like home. The chicks, however, started inching towards Eric's hiding spot. The adult looked over in his direction, and Eric froze. Those eyes, binocular like a person's, seemed to stare right into his. The chicks chirped higher now, indicating that their father was looking the right way. The adult rex lumbered over to the bush, almost in slow motion, Eric thought. It was so big, it was nearly there in five strides. Eric froze. There was nothing he could do, no way to escape this. The next second, the tyrannosaur was standing above him, looking straight down into the bush. Eric stayed frozen, praying that he wouldn't be seen. The huge animal took another step, close to the bush. Eric stared at the beast. With another stomp and a deafening roar, Eric was forced to fall backward out of the bush. Now in the open, he knew it was over. He knew he'd feel those huge teeth rip into him and tear him in half like laffy taffy. But they didn't. As Eric stared wide-eyed at the man-sized muzzle of the dinosaur, the animal just smelled him. Was it true? Could Rex only see motion? It seemed that way. With another mighty sniff, the Rex turned around and made its way back to the corpse, infants chirping and occasionally looking back at him. It was true. The rex could only see motion. When it looked like the animals were totally occupied with feeding, Eric made a break for it. Almost immediately, he tripped on a root. Fueled by terror, Eric popped back up in an instant, not daring to look back. As he made his way back to his water truck, he suddenly remembered...the raptors. As if on cue, the swift hunters returned, surrounding him. Eric fell to his knees, tired and now totally discouraged. All of that, and the raptors get him. For the second time in the last half-hour, Eric accepted death. And for the second time, it didn't come. The raptors came close, inches away, but after a few short, decisive sniffs, the lead raptor barked and turned away. The others turned as well, and when the leader rocketed off into the jungle, the others followed at light speed. Eric, in a daze, practically stumbled the last few yards to his water truck. It took a full ten minutes of sitting in silence for it to hit him. The pee! The rex pee! It scared the raptors away! Eric was ecstatic. He found a natural dino-repellent. And he found out how to survive a rex encounter! If Dr. Grant could see him now, he'd be so proud.
    Back at the rex nest, the adult Tyrannosaur thought about the encounter. As its children dug into the carcass it had procured, it wondered to itself. What bizarre creatures, those little bipeds. So rare, almost never seen in the wild. So enamored with such strange habits. They kill prey and leave it for scavengers, not even bothering to take a chunk with them. They whisk away injured infants and nurse them back to health for seemingly no reason. And, apparently, they roll around in urine and stare down predators ten times their size. The rex snorted. What strange little apes. The rex didn't think much more of it. Not even when the same strange little human came back two days later with a clear object and scooped up urine from a fresh puddle the rex had just left. So bizarre. Oh well, it thought. If its infants ever had a broken leg, it knew where to take them.

      Unlikely, raptors are apex predators that hunt in small groups and will only fight if they are in another raptor’s territory, the loser in any animal fight often retreats with wounds that will heal into scars over time. Very few animals will fight to the death. A fight between two raptors won’t result in a lost claw because raptors use that large claw of theirs to sink it into the flesh of their prey as it is on their toe. That claw is capable of making a huge gash on a rival raptor in a fight, but that won’t happen unless the rival raptor is pushed to the ground and slashed with the claw. Raptors won’t jump just to wound their rival, they’ll usually bite each other to fight.The only way the claw can be ripped out of the raptor’s toe is when it sinks the claw into a larger herbivorous dinosaur’s flesh at an angle and it gets stuck. The other dinosaur will flail around to try and throw the raptor off itself, and if the raptor can’t unhook its claw from the other dinosaur in time, it will get thrown off and its claw will get ripped out as a result. It’ll be agony for the raptor, but the claw will eventually grow back. After all, it’s made of keratin.

    Since Ben's body was entirely gone below the torso it is likely that he was either chewed upon after dying or mauled to death shortly after they landed. If raptors were nearby during that time(which is likely) it is possible that Ben could have been a sitting target for them. If the raptors attacked him Eric could have hidden and gotten enough time to escape unseen.

    • @JeremyJamesPrutchick
      @JeremyJamesPrutchick  Před 6 lety +14

      I considered the possibility of Ben being attacked by raptors, but I haven't decided yet because I still have doubts. For one thing, on the camera, Ben is seen dangling down, and Eric only drops a few feet when he's released from the harness. But then Ben's body is found way up in the tree. The way the branch broke and his body swung, it seemed as though he was positioned differently than how he was on camera. If he was attacked by raptors, I don't know how he got higher up all of a sudden. Raptors can't hold a person and climb a tree to eat. So far as we've seen.

    • @Dinoslay
      @Dinoslay Před 6 lety +7

      Inconsistencies like Ben's hight off-ground can be considered bloopers. They do not prove nor disprove what may have happened off-screen. Whatever the case, there is nevertheless visual proof that something ate his legs which may or may not be connected to what factually caused his death. Knowing the close proximity of the raptor nesting site, it offers convenience to the assumption that they did at least make his dead/non-dead body "lose footing", so to say.

      but people really need to know the difference between resistant , and actual proof, making a park hurricane “resistant” is something they should’ve done I agree
      Another example for those who don’t understand still . Take phones for example company’s say their new phones are water “proof” but the moment it’s cracked or water actually gets into the circuitry then the phone is dead fam . That’s not actual proofing , resistant is the more legit term for that since it helps keep water *out* not in . Now if they made a phone where water was to somehow get inside wash around a bit but for the phone to not be affected in anyway is actual proofing

    Isla Sorna is Site B, which is where Hammond sends Malcolm in The Lost World. The island that was destroyed by the hurricane is Isla Nublar, where the characters were in the first film. So the compound being in ruins could be from the dinosaurs running amuck because there were no fences. The truck that Malcolm takes shelter in is seen again in JP3 when Grant and the others are walking towards the compound. And the window that the raptor jumps through is still broken as well.

It was pretty horrifying to say the least, Eric ran to hide and Ben tried to pull himself up the glider to get away from them but his lower half was ripped off as he climbed up to the top of the tree line. This is proven because they were right next to the velociraptor nests and his lower half was not there in the movie.

    And people wonder how the kids from Camp Cretaceous managed to survive for 6 months! Look at how Eric did it, and see what they have:
    Shelter from the camp remains.
    Water from the stream right next to the camp.
    Food from the abandoned restaurants of the park and natural edible things.
    Defense, not much of it, but then can run pretty fast and know how to hide.
    Knowledge: Darius the dino nerd for info about any Dinos they meet, Kenji who knows the island like the back of his hand, and later on Ben, who knows how to survive and has heighten senses. Need I say more?
    And as for mental stability, they have the desire to go home, and 6 people total to keep them from getting lonely.
    So yea, they have all that Eric had, and some more benefits like the fact that there are more people to help with everything, supplies to build the shelter, and eventually electricity. And don't forget that Eric is 12, while all of these kids are like 15-16. Yeah, it totally doesn't make sense how these kids managed to survive a couple months on a Dinosaur island all on their own...

    A little detail I like to offer to two of the categories.
    Water: There is a scene just before Alan and Eric reunite with the rest where Billy is seen drinking from a stream indicating that was fresh enough. Assuming this wasn't too far from the tree that Billy and the Kirbys spent the night in, it could have been another one of Eric water sources.
    Food: Though this is less a suggestion of what Eric might have done and more of a personal curiosity: could the dinosaurs themselves serve as a potential food source? Obviously not suggesting Eric somehow downed a rex or a raptor and have himself some t rex loin but maybe like a compy. Of course yes they're pretty dangerous en masse, but given how tiny they are its not too hard to think an average human male could kill one with a few blunts or stomps like how some survivors in the wilderness would kill rats, squirrels, rabbits etc. for meat/protein.

    When you were talking about how Eric gathered food, you forgot about where and how he gets meat. When one is surviving on an Island, Meat and Proteins are important. My best guess, was that Eric probably scavenged some meat from already dead Dinosaurs, after the Predators have had their fill. That way, Eric would have some proteins without getting killed by Dinosaurs, like Velociraptors and the aforementioned Spinosaurus.
    Another guess, as to how Eric got Proteins, was that he could also steal some Eggs. Of course, he wouldn't risk stealing Eggs belonging to Dinosaurs, like Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptors. He would probably steal Eggs from large Herbivores, like Parasaurolophus or Brachiosaurus, because Dinosaurs like those would run away from a threat, rather than stand and fight. This was confirmed, when Dr. Grant and the Group ran into the Herd, when they were escaping the Compound and got separated.

    • @jaasonmiller
      @jaasonmiller Před 2 lety

      Highly doubtful. Dinosaur meat and eggs are not part of the natural environment and therefore our bodies and digestive system would react very differently to it. Without the proper care, even a stomach flu or stomach infection can end you. Eric, most likely wouldn’t risk eating dinosaurs knowing the high risk it can cause him. I know he’s 12 years old in the movie but he seems smarter than most 12 year olds so i will assume he knows all this. Tbh, he survived because of plot armor - that’s it, there’s no other way. Well there’s a small chance he could’ve survived in real life but that chance is severely small especially for someone his age.

    Damn the story of Eric's survival should probably have been the main story of JP3... As for how he was to get rescued, I'd assume that once he ran out of supplies, he'd be forced to find a way out. We didn't need to drag in Grant or Eric's annoying parents into the fray. Just a kid learning how to survive in a Dinosaur filled island would've been a good story for JP3

    I'm surprised nobody there managed to find a gun in the compound. I'm positive there would be a few handguns at the least in there.

      Yeah, I'm surprised he never found any weapons.

      He might have found some, but I don't know if he'd like to use it. Like you said, he's very smart. Using a weapon like that would cause a ton of noise and might give himself away to larger beasts like a T-Rex.

      Ingen didn't really seem to provide many weapons so it's unlikely many would have been available. Besides, most would have been taken when the workers left. Still, a handgun wouldn't do anything to most of the animals on that island, a high caliber rifle would be the minimum, and even that would require some skill.

    JP3 would have been more interesting if we ever got to see how a teenager survived on his own on an island full of dangerous dinosaurs before being rescued. Erici has proven to be more braver and smarter than any of the other kids of the franchise.

    In a future video can you discuss why Isla Sorna has both tropical and sequoia forests? Also, could you talk about how/why the Spino wasn't in the second movie?

    • @JeremyJamesPrutchick
      @JeremyJamesPrutchick  Před 6 lety +4

      I can answer your Spino question; it wasn't in TLW because it took place in a different "sector" on the island.

    • @connorvaughn7968
      @connorvaughn7968 Před 6 lety

      Well, I kind of figured that. But, I was more curious about the different sectors of the island and why some of these characters never met? We could include the velociraptors too. Why is it that in TLW the raptors were the tiger striped type and why in the third movie the raptors were feathered and more build.

      There is a theory that the spino wasn't on the island yetand was placed later. On a side note it may be the first "Dino-spliced Hybrid" as on there is a log where Wu discusses gene splicing capabilities and says something referencing an experiment left on Isla Sorna. This would explain why it would be strong enough to kill the T-Rex and why it was so focused on eating the humans instead of fish like a normal Spino would. (The log info is found on a Jurassic world website after going through some secret stuff)

    • @JeremyJamesPrutchick
      @JeremyJamesPrutchick  Před 6 lety +2

      I've heard that theory. Are you talking about the Masrani website that has lots of info on it? If you are, then yeah, I've been there, but I don't recall the part about an experiment left on Sorna. EDIT - I just found the info about the "accident left on Sorna". I just didn't remember it was on there. It makes perfect sense!

    • @ShockwaveITB
      @ShockwaveITB Před 6 lety +2

      Yup that is exactly what I was talking about. That changes a lot of arguments against that fight now. It also could be cool territory for another movie to explore failed experiments.

    This was an excellent video. Great insight but how did you know exactly what he did to survive and how he got the T Rex p?

  • @condeaarondarkusexcubitor3155

    So taking out things of the ecuation like ''plot-armor'', we can surely conclude that Eric despite his age was and is a great survivalist.

    But in the camera footage Ben is still alive when Erik turns the camera off.
    My guess is the second after the camera shut off the raptors started calling, and Erik ran while Been was unable to free himself of the chute (a common occurrence when caught in trees). Then he was either low enough to be nibbled at by the raptors or they simply waited until he died of dehydration and then left.
    Since he's a skeleton when the group finds him a simple breeze would have been enough to remove his lower half at some point, the upper part being mostly held together by the chute.

    Hey Jeremy it would be impossible for Eric to eat the food on the Island because if you remember in the first movie when Allen, Ellie, Ian, John, and the Lawyer were heading to the lodge for the tour Ellie was looking and talking about at a leaf and plants that only grew during the Jurassic. So only the dinosaurs were the only ones who ate and able to eat the plants on both islands.
