    In the book, Nedry is painted in a very different light, and I'm surprised you haven't discussed that.
    Nedry took the work on a contract basis and was actually told very little about what he was working on. In fact, the book mentions the project he bid on was described as 'a system for record keeping'. Hammond expanded the contract without paying for it, and when Nedry tried to get out, InGen actually destroyed his professional reputation by writing letters to his other contract clients. The book mentioned how the project put him into financial ruin and his debts were destroying him, but Hammond refused to pay more money.

  • @xandldandl
    @xandldandl Před 6 lety +46

    Regarding Nedry, they've kind of re-interpreted his financial situation, because in the book it is stated, that hammond actually kind of "blackmailed" him to do a lot more than he is paid for, because they argued the initial agreement involved any additional work, that is necessary to make the system work. Also in the books, Hammond is not as "nice" as in the movie. So basically, you could "defend" nedrys motivation in regards of the book but not so much in the movie :)

    • @DarthPyrusTheVirus
      @DarthPyrusTheVirus Před 6 lety +8

      I agree. The book went more in-depth into Nedry's situation, and even gave him a backstory. He basically signed on for one thing, and Hammond demanded A LOT more than that without any pay increase or further compensation, so he felt like he was highly taken advantage of. He also had a lot of student debt if I remember correctly. We don't really get this in the movie because we know literally nothing about Nedry there, so we have no reason to believe he's been mistreated. It could just be his interpretation of the situation, rather than the reality of it.

    • @BryantVonMiller
      @BryantVonMiller Před 6 lety +6

      Then again, the book has changed a-lot from the Movie, and from what I heard, the movie is regarded more cannon then the books. But I always liked the idea Nedry was blackmailed into it, because he had the skill, and knew if he could screw over hammond while making progress, and the oppertunity to make tons of money, while screwing over the man he hated.

      Until I read the book, I interperted Hammond's comments to Nedry about his financial problems to mean that Nedry was deeply in debt to the wrong people (think gambling debts).

    I'd say Denis Nedry because if it wasn't for him, Jurassic Park probably wouldn't have went down and would have eventually been released to the public AND the rest of the people who died from every movie wouldn't have died. So every single death from the franchise is on Nedry.

      I disagree that the park would've gone online and been fine. You're forgetting that the dinosaurs were breeding on the island (Not to mention that they had all sorts of other bugs in the systems, which is why Nedry was there in the first place). Even beyond that, if we look at the book, the dinosaurs wild born dinosaurs were escaping the island via supply boat. While that might not be canon to the movie, I imagine that something very similar may have eventually happened if the dinosaurs continued to breed. This is even barring the possibility that a bad storm may have knocked out their power eventually, or some other natural disaster. Death on the island was inevitable.

      Ingen hired him to lead the hunter teams in order to tranq and capture the dinosaurs. Timbo had no want or need to participate in that. All he wanted was to hunt a male T rex. When he finally got his chance to kill the male rex, Nick prevented that. Also, Timbo wasn't trying to hunt the rex in the scene where the rex was attacking the camp. He was trying to kill it in order to defend the men. His best chance of stopping the rex(es) from attacking the hunters (Who were ignorant as to what was going on.) Was to tranq it at that point. So he did just that. He tranqued the rex. This is where Timbo felt guilt, because his tranqing of the rex ultimately turned out to be a bonus for Ludlow and INGen. He didn't want to help InGen, he just wanted to hunt the most predominant predator on the planet; Not capture it. This is why Timbo helped Ian and company, as compared to Ludlow's (Get in get out) mentality. In the end, Timbo was just there to hunt the most dangerous predator on the planet, and didn't give a fuck about InGen's agenda. Once he realized he was a pawn, he walked away. I would barely describe timbo as an antihero. I do describe him as one, but only because that's what was implied in the movie. If anything, He was just some guy with a big game passion and in the end he learned that big game hunting was wrong.

    No, the greatest villain in Jurassic Park is that very first Brachiosaur we see. She was behind EVERYTHING.
    She convinced Hammond to pay Nedry so little.
    She convinced Nedry to ally himself with BioSyn.
    She convinced Dr. Wu that there was no un-authorized breeding in Jurassic Park.
    She told the dilophosaurus where Nedry was.
    She turned the power off by snaking her incredibly long neck into the bunker.
    She broke the raptor fences.
    She let Rexy out (tiny arms can't break electric fences).
    She set up the raptor/t-rex fight, just so she could watch them kill each other, by making a hole in the visitor center large enough for Rexy to fit through.
    She went full-on Sith Lord.

    I think that Wu's whole character can be summed up by being an overly ambitious artist with the dinosaurs as his canvas. He has done something remarkable, brought a life form back from extinction to be viable organisms from nothing but rocks. He was satisfied with just getting the dinosaurs up and running, but he had to express himself more with the hybridization project to prove his mastery of genetics. Of course Masrani shut that down, stifling his creativity to continue doing what is now old hat busy work for him.
    When Hoshkins comes with the Indominous project, it was a chance to flex his genetic engineering chops once again. What they were going to use it for didn't matter, the fact that he would be doing something that was just as daring and controversial as making velociraptors back in the day to get that same rush. Then he would fully express himself. Then he would get the recognition he deserves as a genius. In the end, you could sum up his attitude in World in one sentence:
    "Where is my Nobel Prize!?!?!"
    Not an unreasonable question for what he done in all honesty.

      Mills is also in my opinion the best JP villain. The tricked the protagonists to go back to the Island to get Blue and at the end, he sold most of the dinosaurs. His plan was almost finished. I think that from all JP villains, he came closest to achieve his goal. And he‘s the first human to kill another human. That makes him at least a little threatening. I like that.

He makes sure no tells Kelly that Dieter is missing and dead ("And for heavens sakes no one tells the little girl.") He shows concern for Sarah when he thinks the blood on her shirt is hers. He lets the team have a small break. Even though he's angry at Ian's group for sabotaging their camp he not only helps them off the cliff but lets them join his group so they can all get off the island together. He could've left them on their own. He doesn't care about the moral debate between Ian and Ludlow and quickly stops the argument so they can hurry up and get off the island. He has no problem explaining to Nick why he's there unlike Ludlow with Ian. He also stops Ludlow making a base camp on the game trail. Roland quickly accepts the reality when the things go wrong. Unlike Ludlow Roland learns when enough is enough and to quit while he's ahead and can't control the situation and that anything with dinosaurs just brings death. Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn) was the biggest villain in the franchise by being in idiot . He single handidly was responsible for every death in Jurrasic Park 2. For real . Look at his actions . 1) Nick Van Owen for no good reason brings the baby Trex back to the crews trailer causing the death of Eddie Carr and endangering all of his crew. All his crews communication equipment is destroyed . 2) Before that incident , Van Owen breaks into the ingen camp for no good reason and releases all the dinosaurs causing injuries , possible deaths and destroying all their communication equipment and transportation. ... because of the trex incident , the adult trexes hunt all the humans . All the humans killed by the trexes are a consequence of Van Owens actions . Also Van Owen stole Tembos bullets and Tembo wasn’t able to kill the Trex . Instead he put it down with a tranquilizer which resulted in the Rex being shipped to San Diego . So as a result all the characters killed on the boat and in San Diego are also a result of Van Owens actions

    (Possible Fallen Kingdom spoilers)
    I think that dr. Wu is the greatest villain in the end. Mostly because at the end of the day he’s too full of himself to not realize just what he’s doing and why others have been against it. He essentially believes that as long as he’s capable of making it happen he can and should do it.
    I mean think about what Ian Malcolm said in the first movie about the science they were doing. What he said about the Jurassic Park scientists is 100% Dr Wu’s character in a nutshell. All he cares about is progress for progress’s sake and that it’s completely his right to continue doing what he’s been doing. His very hubris is what’s made him, in my opinion, the greatest villain.
    Another reason why he’s the worst is because he refuses to understand what is wrong with his very creation. Sure in the newest movie he shows during the auction scene that he knows the dinosaurs, or at least the hybrid ones, are definitely dangerous, but since he’s never truly been around the real danger when everything goes wrong, he just doesn’t get how seriously wrong he is. Basically what I’m saying is that dr. Wu is both a scientific genius and a complete dumbass at the same time. Genius because he was able to do what he did in the first place. Dumbass because he hasn’t learned anything about why he needs to stop and why continuing his work is the greatest mistake of his life/ career. Cause he may very well go down in the history of the film series as the reason humankind goes extinct.

He also only wanted to take herbivorous until the only choice was one t-rex then when it broke out he tried to kill it but keep the baby because it could be domesticated. He was still greedy but not as bad as the other's.

    The best villain in the Jurassic Park series, is, uh,... chaos. Because chaos, you see, not only thwarts our, uh uh, our ‘heroes’ so to speak, but it menaces our villains and the dinosaurs themselves. Chaos is the, uh, permeating force throughout, uh, pretty much everything that’s happened since 1993.
    It is the force that uh, results in the park going down, and the man who took it down being killed, and uh, uh, later the, uh, the dinosaurs being killed, by the volcano.
    Chaos... is an obstacle for us all. It is, uh, the... penultimate antagonist.

    From how I experience them, all of the human villains have one parallel that connects them; disrespect. Nedry and Ludlow were both after money in their individual ways and didn't pay much respect to the dinosaurs nor their fellow people. The same also applies to Hoskins with an additional crazy streak for power through harnessing the animals as biological weapons. Wu is consumed by his career and scientific power to create life, unwittingly at the expense of human lives. As villains, though, none of them are exactly formidable, just unlikable. Whereas the dinosaurs definitely are the true antagonists, they just have more personality and aren't plain villainous(with the exception of the two hybrids).

  • @darthlord1997

    The greatest human villain in Jurassic Park? Hmm....that depends, are we strictly the movies, or can we include the novels? If so, then I have a hard time choosing between Novel Hammond and Lewis Dodgnson.
    Novel Hammond was just.....how can anyone be....this guy is the MAIN REASON I prefer the movie version of Jurassic Park (I still like the book). All he cared about was the money that the park would bring him. He didn't listen to ANY reason, even some that DIDN'T come from Malcolm. He didn't care his own GRANDCHILDREN were out in the park, IN DANGER, he just believed the situation was always in control, despite it being obvious it wasn't. Plus, after all of it, ALL of it, he didn't learn a SINGLE THING! His next intentions was to start all over again, with a fresh start.
    Lewis Dodgnson was just a jerk, and he did some pretty messed up experiments in his past. Can't remember exactly what they were, but I remember them being pretty bad. However, I'm more welcome to his actions because the book told me "this guy is the villain." Hammond left a more sour taste because I read his character after watching his complete opposite film portrayal.
    Now, if we stick to the movies:
    I think you guys were too hard on Nedry. Now, was he responsible for the entire chaos, yes. However, you guys over looked that when he turned off the fences, A. He had to, in order to reach the east dock, and B. he only intended to be gone for 15 MINUTES.
    The plan was: Disable security and fences, steal the embryos, drop the can off at the east dock, COME BACK, and reset everything, all in the span of several minutes.
    The rest I think you guys did justice, so I guess my final answer would be:
    Books included: Lewis Dodgnson
    Movies only: Peter Ludlow

Wu [for creating and reengineering the dinos DNA] 3. Ludlow/Van Owen [Ludlow sending the ingen team (Van Owen for loosing the dinos and stealing baby rex causing the chaos on both the island and San Diego)]. 4. Nedry again causing the deaths of at least 3 people. These people are villains as their actions directly resulted in the chaos. Yes, Nedry bid for the job. But like a lot of bosses who hire on contract, Hammond wasn't clear on what the job was so that Nedry could give him a quote that would reflect how MUCH work would be needed and what the rate of pay should be. Evidently he bid for one job, but then Hammond began piling more work on that what Nedry had bid for, and THAT is why he got greedy. The fact that he shut down EVERYTHING endangering the people on the island IS still absolutely DESPICABLE. But one might argue that Hammond and Wu were (at the least) short-sighted for making a dino park that included predators as dangerous as T-Rex and Velociraptor, and a "first-class" scientist like Wu didn't understand that some species of frogs have been known to change sex when he added that DNA, but paleontologist Grant knew that info.

    I'll try be brief;
    Nedry - I think there is more to his backstory and why he did what he did,one could imagine that he had signed up a contract for his work,but ran into problems and would have had to do a lot extra but when he asked for more money Hammond refuses,also possiby something that he had done as Hammond does say that he does ask that people pay for their mistakes.
    Ludlow - Pretty much a CEO/Director type. He does need to make money to recoup losses from the original park. So in a sense he was just doing his job and he was trying to be cut throat about it,so in a sense not really that much of a villain.
    Hoskins - Same deal he is just trying to do his job,I mean as far a weaponising the animals well one could argue that it is an evil agenda and possibly only a pawn under Wu and his ideas but still not that much of a villain....
    Wu on the otherhand.....now he is really a villain,whilst he comes across as just doing his job and obviously a bit of a hero as to bringing back Dinosaurs in JP1,his transition into the mad scientist with no bounds or scruples tips him into villain territory with what he is doing in regard to actually weaponising the Indoraptor and playing around with the other animals in the Jurassic World lab....and then the later selling off of dinosaurs so that he could make more money to further his research into gene splicing....

    Ludlow brought the buck rex and infant to San Diego which eventually trapped him on the SS Venture an then the infant ate him.
    Hoskins has the raptors go for a test run, one came back to the lab and killed him, despite his attempts to control it.
    I can’t really decide who is the best villain, they’re all pretty despicable people.

      Yep. The problem with Mills is that he was more of a wannabe Lewis Dodgson (which is why I think that they're actually bringing back the actual Lewis Dodgson - played by Campbell Scott this time - but I do believe that they were planning to bring him back since Jurassic World, but they couldn't because Cameron Thor (Dodgson's original actor) was arrested in 2013) and I kinda question whether Hoskins actually did work together with Mills, considering Mills' rash and hotheaded behaivour.
      My theory is that Dodgson was working with Hoskins and Wu in secret, while Mills was just a means to an end.
      But I kinda liked how Fallen Kingdom gave us a villain who we can cheer when he meets it's demise. I admit I actually cheered when Mills got eaten by Rexy.
      He isn't the best villain, but he is the 2nd most evil character in the franchise, Dodgson (Novel Canon and possibly after 2022 in the Movie Canon) being the top 1 most evil character.

Especially when you consider some of the lines Wu says to Masrani in that scene like: "All of this exists because of me. If I don't innovate, somebody else will." and " "Monster" is a relative term. To a canary, a cat is a monster. We're just used to being the cat." Wu's voice tone, body language, awareness, control, power, intelligence and complete disregard for human life along with Masrani's reaction which is shock, horror and the realisation that he's in control and never has but Wu's.

    He's wicked smart.
    He works largely in secret while projecting a diminutive, relatively harmless outer persona, laying the foundation for every disaster in the entire franchise from behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.
    Death and destruction mean nothing to him, as long as it doesn't prevent him from achieving his goals.
    Despite all this, very few people think of him as a threat.
