  • Here we talk about how Ben Hildebrand REALLY died in the movie Jurassic Park 3. No focus on Dinosaurs here due to the skeleton and it's backstory being explained in the script and book material. Dinos like the Spinosaurus, Pteranodons, Velociraptors and even the Compsognathus don't really have to much to do with what happened to Ben here on Isla Sorna because...well he passed kind of quicker than what I think most fans think. At least if we actually go off of evidence. Hope you all enjoy! :D

"Why is his corpse stepped of flesh"
He's hanging, totally exposed, in a boiling jungle island. In a _tree_
It's teeming with bugs, birds, compies...there's millions of scavengers to pick it clean.
    "Where'd his legs go"
Decomposing bodies don't hold together very well. And again there's all sorts of animals picking at him. Which leads to the last question:
"How'd his dead body climb up a tree"
Here's how it goes: dead body sitting there for anything to eat. A carnivore or scavenger finds it, tries to pull it down, but it can't because the parachute ropes are too tightly tangled, so it rips the body in half and leaves with its prize. A small (relatively), arborial scavenger shows up, drags the rest of the carcass further up into the tree so that it can eat in safety, just like modern cheetahs. (Also, in the book, there are arborial dinosaurs). Final result: the carcass is left in the tree, where only small animals and insects can get at it, unable to break the bones.

A bruise is a pool of blood in the tissue caused by trauma that's re-absorbed into the body and disposed of by the immune system over a number of days. Those blood cells however, can not be re-used by the body again. That's probably what your thinking of. Given that life on earth has had hundreds of millions of years to evolve and not one single species has the ability to 're-absorb internal bleeding to be re-used by the body', it would be safe to assume we wouldn't develop such a thing any time soon. If anything, medical science will develop so much to the point where things like bleeding out/internally would be an irrelevant issue.

Ben's death in JP3 was one big head-scratcher for me. I knew he couldn't have been killed by a Rex or the Spino since his skeleton was still there entangled in the parasail's cords. I too believed he was injured in the landing so he couldn't get away. As to how he died, I assumed the raptors, since they landed pretty close to the nests, came across him, attacked and killed him. Then scavengers (bugs and other carrion species) and natural decay led to his body being the condition it was in. However, what if it was another species that wasn't on InGen's list like the archaeopteryx?

We assumed raptors as well bexause spino and rex would eat it in one bite, compies were too small to climb and pteranodons were still closed in the aviary, although some pterosauruses were seen being free in lost world, human stuck in a tree branches wouldn't be their best food avalibe. And since raptors can jump (as seen in Udesky's scene ... R.I.P. udesky) they could get acces to it. Exept from them, we stated that maybe dilophosourus could try to get it, but now, death from wounds makes perfect sense

Okay here's how I believe his body got that way; after he died from his injuries, he probably started to decay lot faster due to the humid hot air on the site, as the decay goes on, most of his flesh kind of seats out through his stomach and probably his lower extremities may have fallen out due to said decay, there's a good likely chance the compies actually do climb trees or maybe even some of the insects on the island could have stripped him from his flesh. There is scientific evidence of ants having stripped the flesh off of their prey in a matter of hours, so honestly it may not even be that inconsistent on how his body ended up like that.

Imagine dying from injuries by tree in a series primarily focused on dangerous Mesozoic animals...
Also, I'd always theorized myself that shortly after the camera footage cut out that the raptors had gotten him, as their nests were within fairly close proximity to the crash site, as well as his body's mutilated state and the fact we saw a Velociraptor jump an easy 7-8 up into the air after Amanda... That shot to me implied it wasn't their first attempt at picking humans out of trees...

When I got to Ben's scene a couple days ago whilst watching JP3, I would've never thought it was internal bleeding that did him in.
I always thought it was dehydration that got to him. Seeing it now though, internal bleeding makes a lot more sense.
I figured that he must've been irreversibly stuck in the tree, and decided to cut Eric out so he wouldn't suffer his fate. After a few days or so, of course, he'd die and scavengers would pick him clean.
I also thought maybe the chute he was wearing caused some type of internal issue related to the chute crushing his insides or something, which now I think of it, plays into his death via internal bleeding.

This has been one of the biggest mysteries for me, right behind the attack on the ship in the Lost world.
What really confused me is the noises heard during the video recording, I could never tell if it was an animal coming for them or just the camera malfunctioning or maybe just them getting unstrapped. I think that noise is really what got a lot of people curious as to what happens.
As for why his body is in such terrible shape. Small animal probably took the skin and raptors and the like the limbs. They didn't feel like tangling or chocking on the harness so they decided to leave the Torso mostly intact. I also imagine that the reason he was in the tree was because the parasail caught the wind and pullied him into the branches after expiration, before settling back down to be discovered by the Kirbys party.

Before I watch the video, my idea is that Ben was killed by the raptors seconds upon landing. After the crash, Eric drops down and turns off the camera, but the sounds of the two humans and the crashing of branches, along with parental instincts and the guarding of their nearby nest, attracts the raptors, which surround Ben and close in on him slowly (like in the end). Eric runs into the forest towards the river, and Ben is left entangled in ropes and kicks to save his own life, but is quickly shredded and consumed by raptors, and later cleanded by Compys (which is why Eric fears the two species.)

More over, although Eric blocks most of the internal organs, Ben has a larger body and most of the damage would be internal.
Common injuries from paramotoring and paragliding are tibia fractures, fractured ribs, and lumbar fractures. Nearly all of the injuries are internal and most are from the impact. The injury will mostly rely on body size, mass, etc. Having a smaller body would be beneficial in this case.

The condition of his body seems pretty explainable to me. Context: I collect bones from roadkill in PA, which has a variety of environmental conditions throughout the year, so I have a decent understanding of what can happen to a human-sized corpse in a couple of months (we have a lot of deer).
After death, the internal organs begin to decompose extremely quickly. Gut bacteria keep doing their thing, causing bloating, eventually rupturing the digestive tract if it isn't already ruptured by trauma, leaking bacteria and gut contents into the surrounding tissues. Assuming that no vertebrate scavengers have gotten to the body by then, the smell attracts flies and beetles, which lay eggs, and the larvae eat through soft parts faster than you'd think possible. Maggots, beetles, and crows/small animals can reduce a deer to nothing but bones, dry skin, and connective tissues in a couple of weeks.
But of course, Ben's corpse is notably missing its skin. That tells me that either things were wet enough to allow invertebrates to even eat the skin (possible on a tropical island), and/or small- to mid-sized dinos also had a go at him and tore off pieces of soft tissue. The latter seems more likely, given the red tint of the tissue that's left - slow maggot breakdown is usually black, gray, even green with mold.
So my theory is that the body was picked over by smaller pterosaurs filling an ecological niche like vultures, and any larger ones could possibly have tried to fly off with some (maybe to avoid raptors), inadvertently pulling Ben's body higher up where the ropes tangled in the branches. Anything on the ground would be eaten by raptors and compies.

  • @Soul93Taker
    @Soul93Taker Před 4 lety +7

Considering this info my guess is that the impact must have broken some of the man's ribs which punctured a lung and would explain the gurgling in his voice. There could also be more internal damage given the info points to the duo falling straight down a tree almost at ninety degrees since a frontal impact would have been much worse for Eric. Ben would later die from internal bleeding, unfound by dinosaurs big enough to drag him from his place like a T-Rex or the Spino, given raptors didn't show interest or find him despite being relatively nearby and compys weren't made for climbing. This would explain why his body is rotten rather than eaten, as only bugs and maybe whatever small birds/lizards/small pterosaurids lived on the island could reach his corpse.
Edit: what really disturbs me is how (or if) Eric found out he died. Since there was a raptor nest nearby the kid mustn't have been there for long. I wonder if he waited until Ben passed away more or less silently, or left to search a safer place and then returned to find him dead or simply was forced to abandon him once he made it to shelter. Poor boy must have been traumatized enough to explain his rather flat behaviour after being found by Grant.

Well questioning what happened to his flesh and muscle in 8 days I can explain rather easily. While turkey hunting several years ago I killed a coyote kicking up nests looking for eggs. He was a nice size so I skinned him and kept the pelt. We tossed the carcass in a semi dry creek bed and left him there. 2 days later buzzards had opened him up and gone after the entrails. By the end of the week it was mostly bone and cartilage. Now Ben died in a Tropical climate with a lot more ferocious flying scavengers I'm sure. Once picked clean the weight could have caused his legs to simply drop with nothing much holding them on.

Simple they got stuck in the tree Eric gets out and when there about to get Ben down they hear the Raptors. Eric hides. Ben tries to climb higher in the tree but the Raptors tugged at his legs and eventually ripped them off Ben then dies of blood loss and then bugs and complies eat his flesh.

Okay, he died by the fall, but his flesh and legs were ripped off by Raptors, since the survivors found him near nests.

Yeah but why is he up in the tree? We can see him right above the ground on the cam seconds before he falls down the tree. But we do know that raptors like to rip arms and legs of like arnold in JP and hoskins in JW.

@@guybrushthreepwood2014 Interesting, perhaps Pteranodons scavenged the parts *they didn't like.*

@@vex7149 I also thought this at first but why would they fly in a forrest. We've seen them on the coast of isla sorna. I don't think the search for food in the forrest because they're way to big to fit throug all those trees. The closest thing I can imagine to a pteranodon hunting in a forrest is a dimorohodon but we've seen them attack in Jurassic world and they couldn't lift a person up. Even the pterandodons had trouble doing it.
