Why Samuel L. Jackson's Death Scene Was Cut From Jurassic Park

- So many awesome characters have come and gone in the Jurassic Park franchise...some of them have left willingly, and become legends in the fan community...others didn't get such a privelege. And while its
undeniably obvious that a lot of people have died in the Jurassic series, most of them have been mere drops in the bucket, when compared to others who are well recognized to this very day. One such character, is
Ray Arnold, Jurassic Park's Chief Engineer. This chain smoking technician was the complete opposite to that of his programming peer, Dennis Nedry, and worked hard on trying to undo the mess that his slovenly coworker
had put the island in during the tropical storm. A storm that was unfortunately, more than just a plot point in the movie, as fate would have Hurricane Iniki hit Hawaii during the filming of Jurassic Park in 1992.
This unforseen event caused Samuel L. Jackson's character, to sadly be robbed of his very intense death scene, after the engineer goes out to the Maintenance Shed alone, once the system has been shut down. In a
recent interview with the A.V. Club, Jackson got to talk about his experience on the film, saying: "I was actually supposed to go to Hawaii, to shoot my death scene, but there was a
hurricane that destroyed all the sets, so I didn’t get to go," "All you see is the residue of my body, my arm. But, yeah, I was supposed to be on set." Its kind of disappointing to hear that after all this time,
Ray Arnold was supposed to get a send off in the film that would have revealed, EXACTLY what happened to him after he walks off screen to go and restart Jurassic Park. Now, I searched the internet looking for any sort
of outline of his death scene and what exactly was supposed to happen to him in the film version, but unfortunately I couldn't find any real evidence on how this would have transpired. Even after reading through the
Jurassic Park shooting script, I was unable to come up with any sort of indication, as to how Spielberg would have shot this scene. I have however read the original book, by Michael Crichton, who did a draft of the
screenplay before David Koepp came in to do a final rewrite, and the Crichton version of Mr.Arnold's passing, could give us a little more insight into how the character was supposed to go.

Ahhhhhahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
I see you got that from "how Jurassic park should have ended"
That is a hilarious video
**rexy proceeds to eat everyone**
HISHE XD
To be fair seeing his severed arm land on Dr. Sattler's shoulder just to breathe a sigh of relief only to realize that he's been turned into Dino food just creeps the Hell out of me!
Honestly, I think SLJ is misremembering this. There is no indication that his death scene was ever meant to be shot. And even if it was, a simple maintenance shed set could have been put together anywhere.
@@MoneyManHolmes Exactly. His death wasn't in the script and the interior of the maintenance shed was built on a stage in Los Angeles. I also remember they only lost one day of shooting due to the hurricane and the only scene on that day was supposed to be the Gallimimus stampede.
That was the scene that scared me when I was a kid.
Yeah, it’s better this way

JurASSic Park was all about butts...
Is it wrong for me to think that not showing his death made the revelation of his arm more effective?
Joshua Ashby Sometimes what's scarier is the unknown.
Joshua Ashby I can see them ending the scene with the door getting shut behind him and everything going black. Then when Ellie finds his arm, it's still surprising.
Robert Baum I like that idea!
Hey it worked for Alien and Jaws so it worked here too! Sometimes the less you see, the scarier it becomes at times.
I was thinking the same thing, the not knowing was more suspenseful.
Idk. Although an Arnold death scene might be cool to watch, I kind of like the way it was presented in the final film. Plenty of people get killed on camera, some via the raptors. The surprise when Arnold puts his hand on Ellie's shoulder and she sighs in relief, then turns to address him, only to realize that what's on her is a severed hand and the only thing that's left of the man ... it was brutal, intense, and a huge shock the first time watching the film. Seeing Arnold's death on screen, it would have been just another death; not seeing it, it allows for a really memorable scene. That's just my opinion, though.
Pixel Fox, I agree.
Yep, something really nice just having it happen off scene and be such a shock to Ellie then lead to the Raptor reveal, it worked so well
Completely agree....sometimes its what the audience doesnt see that makes a scene better/more intense. Just look at the opening scene to jurassic park when that worker gets killed by the raptor in the crate.... we hardly even see the raptor but that scene is incredibly intense and iconic and an incredible opening segment to a film.
I kind of wish there was a scene that was a little down the middle. Like, him in the shed, going for the generators, the click of raptor claws on the floor, cut to.... "Something's wrong. He's been gone for too long."
That’s very true
Jackson: God damn, I really wanted to die dramatically by being torn to bits by dinosaurs on screen.
Hollywood: I hear you. How do you feel about sharks...?
The big monkey got him in Kong skull island ! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ha!
Dinosaurs,
Sharks,
Gorillas,
Mutant monsters.
I like that there's no death scene. It makes you wonder what happened to him and that adds more suspense when Ellie is at the generator. It was an iconic scene!
it was cut because it was that graphic to graphic to show that's really why the cgi guys went over board making it way to graphic
It wasn't that hard to figure out. He became breakfast.
@@bezoticallyyours83 Exactly. They didn't need to show it. Leaves a lot to the imagination.
The question is how the raptor got the in arm in the generator
Still don't know where Ellie got her limp, it was supposed to be because she tripped over Mr Arnold's leg, but I'm not sure.🤷🏼♀️
He lost an arm in Jurassic Park
Lost an eye while fighting snakes on a plane
Then bought an eyepatch and got new bionic arm, then started the Avengers
and a hand in star wars
john murphy Are deleted scenes canon? I think not! If they are not in the actual movie, they are not canon!
Nick Nitro .....when did he lose an eye in that movie...watch it again
Errr then he was eaten by a shark very suddenly...
And time travelled back to the 1970's and got squished by Kong on Skull Island.
I'm actually glad that they didn't shot the scene because it's more suspenseful, creepier, scarier and mysterious.
That is what I think really happened; the Hurricane had nothing to do with his death being cut; the crew likely decided that having Jophery, and Muldoon killed by Raptors was enough..
Yeah like jaws the shark wasn’t working so they didn’t use the shark as much as they wanted to but it made the shark more mysterious so it like they used it to their advantage to to make it better by making it creepy and scary
I think ur right
I agree! Not everything needs an explanation. It leaves his death more eerie and up to the imagination of the audience. I wouldn’t change a thing about this classic film
Had they did shoot the scene it wouldve been pushing the movir past that PG 13 rating and on the edge of R
4:28 he open his mouth and scream " mother FU……."
Raptor : Shhhhh……. kids watch this movie
Yeah they like to see people get tore up and mauled into slices of food
@@Uaveatz2 You're not too far off because Fallen Kingdom did something like thay with someone saying "holy sh--" before being cut off, and yet we still see dinosaurs rip people apart no problem.
Ray Arnold: "I picked the wrong day to quit smoking cigarettes".
I read the novel (obviously) and especially adored the entire ending raptor sequence. However, in the film, omitting Arnold's death was a great move. I wouldn't have wanted another Raptor death competing with Muldoon's iconic death. This way, both deaths were iconic. Plus, I've always been a fan of the "less is more" form of storytelling and just seeing Ellie pull out the arm was brilliant imo.
Andy Reptar it wasn't a great move because it wasn't a move at all. It was forced and it just happened to work for them. I agree sometimes less is more, but not always. Sometimes it sucks getting stuck with not knowing something and just getting the doubts. It's like unfinished business, sometimes.
prettypaperthings Well, I imagine it was similar to the set of Jaws where the mechanical shark kept breaking down. In both cases, suspense was built via omission.
Andy Reptar "I read the novel (obviously)" no need to add the obviously. Also, I call bullshit.
Andy Reptar you didn't read anything.
@@prettypaperthings JAWS didn't intentionally omit the shark in so many of its scenes we were supposed to see the shark when it got Chrissy but it malfunctioned thus creating one of if not the best most terrifying scene in movie history Jurrassic Park on the other hand is not about the Dinos being killing machines the way the shark is in Jaws so too much gore would ruin it
As crappy as it was we never got to see a death scene, the shock of seeing the arm just fall onto Dr Sadler was perfect!
5:28 wow, that must have cost him...an arm and a leg!
if this was Reddit, you would be on r/angryupvote right now.

Famous last words
I want him to show up with one arm in a sequel soooo bad
TheBd62 He should show up in court with Malcomb is Fallen Kingdom!
"I HAVE HAD IT WITH THESE MOTHERFUCKING RAPTORS ON THIS MOTHERFUCKING ISLAND!"
LMAO Snakes on a plane... Then he says, "NOW HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTTS!"
He survives on Sorna with one arm for years, only being found and rescued when scouting missions for the construction for the Jurassic World theme park begin.
That would be cool!
I think it's weird that a hurricane destroyed the set, like the hurricane Clarissa caused trouble for InGen.
What you mean?
look up the definition of coincidence
Joel Numazawa back In 92 or 93 when they were filming a hurricane hit Hawaii and nocked the t-Rex fence set down it’s on the extras of Jurassic Park film.
That's wicked - even with the power running on if it wasn't for Dennis Nedry.
That sounds more believable scenario how everything went wrong.
Hurricane Iniki had winds of 145 mph and storm surge around 15-18 feet in Kaua'I. It basically destroyed most of the homes and it destroyed the set.
For years I thought I'd imagined the severed arm scene since every time I've watched the film on TV it's not there. Thank you for letting me know I'm not going mad.
To be honest, what happened in the final cut of the film was so much better then any actual on screen death scene would have been!
The fact that we don't know what happened is just so much better!
I'm pretty sure Ellies limp during her escape from the shed was due to the frame of the metal gate slamming into her knee while she tried to close it on the charging raptor. You can even see during that scene that she takes the brunt of the impact to her left leg, which is the same leg she's having trouble with while she runs out of the shed.
Wildcat78 Exactly! Thank you!
It was because she was white 🙄
@@goldinthefurnace You're white
Because the metal gate learns from it's mistakes
It's a very good theory.

I remember seeing this at the movies with my dad when it first came out, and 2 guys in front were doing the occasional sarcastic commentary. This scene came up and when she turned around to revel its just his arm they said "Oh mr Arnold, you've lost weight!", and even my dad laughed at that one! lol, funniest line they had and will always remember and think of that during this scene.
He smoked like a train but he uses a shoe to get light all.hes bound to have had a zippo
Hahahaha very true!!!! But was he a chain smoker in the book?
@@andrewpaige1194 - I think it's the only actual real description of him in the book
Back in 2010 B.D Wong had come to my college and during the Q & A portion I had asked him if he had been disappointed that he didn’t have a larger role in Jurassic Park. He said he kinda was and wanted to do his gruesome death scene from the book.
Blake Weis Thanks for sharing that little memory! :) Kinda makes me wonder what it would have been like if they had included that in the movie, if it would have become another iconic death in the film.
hopefully we'll finally get this in Jurassic world:fallen kingdom
@@littlewinterflower1831 he didn't die in Jurassic Park he is in Jurassic World
@@aprildannettegosa5381 they know
But on the other hand, he got to come back for the sequels. Difficult choice I guess. But I think it's cooler to play a character that gets to keep coming back and having that history.
Arnold's onscreen death was ultimately omitted to build up the suspense when Dr Sattler herself goes to the shed. The jump scare is terrifying.
Spielberg changed Death scenes from the Jaws novel too for much the same purposes.
What I’ve always wanted to know is how and why the raptor placed his severed limbs so neatly, and at just the right angle for his hand to fall onto Ellie’s shoulder lol
It was wedged in the groove so the other raptors didn't steal the food
The scene that was deleted actually had Samuel L. Jackson kill the velociraptor by shooting it in the head after seeing it in his rear view mirror hiding in the backseat during the drive.
Pulp Fiction!🤣
You know what they call a Stego-burger with cheese in the Cretaceous?

Did you not watch the video? He took off a shoe to keep the door open
@@arielcastillo592 The prop leg that they didn't end up using, had no shoe. This fits the novel's description.
Thank you, for all these years. This finally explains Ellie's limping which the original scene seem to heavily exaggerate beforehand. Falling over Mr Ray Arnold's leg being severed and having a harder fall over it, now adds to why she was limping the way she did in the movie. And cheers for the links!
Huh. I totally forgot about the limping. Thanks for the reminder and explanation.
I just discovered your channel this past week and I feel deprived!
That's crazy, I always thought she had a bad leg after the severed arm scene because she was holding the Raptor back behind the door with her legs and she hurt her knee. But tripping over the leg makes a lot of sense
Ah man! I love how you presented the death scene! Really clever use of actual clips from the movie. I've just read the novel and it's spot on! You rock! ❤

Hot take, but Muldoon is inept and terrible at his job in the movie. He was a much better character in the book. He's still a badass regardless.
As your talked about his death I was subconsciously visualizing this death scene. It’s horrifying as hell! Raptor plus pitch darkness would send a chill down anyone’s spin not to mention a cold rusty wet shed 😰 horrifying!
Thank you for putting such a Great piece of work together. M C writing made so much possible.
I dunno. It sucks and all that he didn't get the chance to film it and it wasn't in the movie. However, I don't think Ellie finding Arnold's severed arm would have been as impactful had we already seen what happened to him.
they likely only put the arm there because they didnt film the death scene
However, Ellie entering the power station and getting to the breakers would probably be more tense if we knew a raptor was definitely still inside, so it sora trades off.
@@FiresideBoomer But the scene in the maintenance shed was filmed well after the crew left Kauai, and why didn't they film his death on the maintenance shed set?
@@FiresideBoomer Too bad they didn't use the leg prop.
They could have shown him in the maintenance shed and the subsequent raptor attack, but cut back to the control room before we actually see him get killed. It'd be even more suspenseful if we knew he was in danger, but not whether he made it or not.
Dude, your reading of that situation was so tense and good! You need to do a read through of the original Jurassic Park novels ❤️😱

its kinda crazy though that in a 3 minute period ( the time SLJ character gave for bringing systems back) the raptors realized the fences were down, attacked the fences and managed chew through them, then chase down Arnold and eat him. seems kinda far fetched to be honest.
considering how intelligent the series leads us to believe raptors are I really don't think it's too far fetched.
Pretty much all of Jurassic Park is far fetched. Kinda why we love it :).
I think the fans want more triceratops because of it's connection to the franchise and it always being the counterpart to the tyrannosaurus. I would love to see the Rex hunt the trike, but I know the triceratops will have to lose. The telltale game did a great job of making you guess and choose what happened.

The description of kills in the books are always so chilling. Like the first time I was reading the book and reading henry wu’s famous death and he describes coming to the realization he’s being eaten alive…
Best news I get is when I get a notification that Klayton has dropped a video! Keep up the good work!
Ibrahim Khawaja Tots agree!
I read the book a long time ago, but hearing the recap of this death brings back the memory! Holy shit, it was great.
Damn, that scene you described sounds absolutely terrifying, I would have loved to see that in the movie ._.
To scream...
There's too many motherfackin raptors on this motherfackin island!!!!!!
I think your speculation on the scene and the parts of storyboard you shared are right in line with the what is referenced at the beginning of the film. At the beginning of the film, Dr. Grant shares to the dismissive boy about how a raptor eats its prey. "It starts eating you while you're still alive." I suspect that originally the script was to be the foreshadowing of the scene you are describing but, due to the storm, they had to make the script changes. My suspicion, as a tag-line to your idea, is that originally when Ellie Sattler turns on the lights she finds the Raptor eating John "Ray" Arnold possibly, while he is still alive. That would reflect Ellie's terror, even more, running from the shed. I suspect the script and body parts scene was written once they were not able to film the canceled scenes mentioned by Samuel L. Jackson Thoughts?
Its very possible to be honest! Its so interesting to look at all of the deleted portions of these films and what other scenes we may have gotten
But on the other hand, if he was killed in the maintenance shed, which was filmed on a soundstage at Warner Brothers Studio I believe, how would Hurricane Iniki have caused his death to be cut?
After learning of this scene that didn't get filmed, it's really hard to imagine it in the final cut of the movie without it feeling so out of place because of how much I got used to the normal movie adaptation
hashtagSHREKT Because we all watched these movies a thousand times. It was like that for me when I first saw cut scenes from Star Wars.
I would say that his death scene was cut well before filming even started on Kauai. They already had 4 death scenes planned Jophery, and Gennaro, Nedry and Muldoon, although the latter 3 were to be filmed well after the crew finished in Hawaii, on Soundstages. Arnold didn't seem like a main character enough to warrant a death scene
"Why we never got to see the death scene"
What we all thought: *some difficult drama or technical production bullshit or even some issues with the scheduling*

Awesome video, great narration! I actually think it was more powerful just seeing his arm the way we did- left a lot of juicy bits to the imagination :)
This was awesome, thanks for posting. My imagination was all there with your story telling. Good read. Thanks again.
a scene where the herbivores are a threat would be great for a change-. in real life, surprisingly elephants and hypos cause way more human deaths than lions or tigers
El De Los Dinosaurios the reason Hippos and Elephants cause a large amount of human death is because people are stupid, these animals are very docile but getting too close, or giving them reason to attack, is likely to get you killed. I think the reasoning behind the herbivores not being so violent in the films is because generally the people going to Jurassic Park, at least in the originals, are fairly smart and know when it's appropriate to get close too an animal or not by it's behaviour. So, people like Alan Grant would know to keep away from the young of say, a Triceratops, but in the Lost World we did see some herbivores fighting against the soldiers, because they were pressed in the situation and had to fight for their survival. For example, Hippos causing deaths in Africa is mainly because people enter their breeding grounds and 'baby-territories', but in Jurassic Park the humans know to keep back, and not antagonise the creatures. Also, the young are grown separate from their parents in Jurassic park, although again, near the beginning of The Lost World we see stegosaurus' getting pretty aggressive because Dr Harding gets too close to the nest. It's all about circumstances, and in Jurassic Park (which is a controlled environment) the people are less likely to be in situations where herbivores would attack them, whereas in real life if you're attacked by a Hippo or Elephant, chances are you're in the wild, uncontrolled. Also the fact that most, but not all, people that ventured to Jurassic Park (in the originals) were doctors, or wildlife experts, that had a bit of sense when it came to not antagonising the dinosaurs.
hippos and elephants are not docile at all. human is not always the cause. many times herbivores also fight to each other for different causes. it´s not lke they will attack constantly for any reason.. but neither carnivores do that
El De Los Dinosaurios by docile I mean they will not go out of their way to kill you, a predator does. If a Hippo is in a river and you stand near the edge, it isn't likely to try to kill you. If it's a crocodile infested river, then the crocs are practically guaranteed to try and kill you. Any animal that doesn't need to kill yo survive, won't go out of it's way to do so. Now, from the animals point of view, you just getting marginally close to it can be perceived, from the POV of the animal, as a threat, as you are trying to hunt it. Just because a human may know it's intentions are not sinister, when approaching a Hippo, doesn't mean the Hippo knows this, it only knows it may need to defend itself. Just because it attacks what it can perceive as a threat, doesn't mean it's not docile. But even if a human stands near a Hippo infested river, and is attacked, it can just be because the Hippo knows Humans are predators, which we are in terms of the animal kingdom, so it may attack because it needs to defend it's home, ie the river. Again, animals do not know the intentions of humans, so even though it will seem like it wasn't the humans fault, just going close to a Hippo makes it the persons fault if they are attacked, since the animal is just acting on instinct. In jurassic park we see more of the carnivores because they go out of their way to hunt people, obviously the herbivores don't. It's that simple, plus the fact is that we do actually see the violent side of herbivores a number of times in the films.
El De Los Dinosaurios "it' s not like they will attack constantly for any reason.. but neither carnivores do that", I know that. The point is carnivores hunt for food, they kill for food, they go out of their way to kill for food. And this is reflected in the films, since the violent side of the carnivores we see is them hunting, obviously herbivores do not hunt. It would be strange to see it in the films, that's all I'm saying. Just to reiterate, we see the violent side to carnivores because they HAVE to hunt, herbivores do not hunt, so why would the film show them being violent? The only room for it in the film is if a herbivore is defending itself, and we already see that in the films.
@@jameslove1162 Just because an animal doesn't need to hunt you to survive doesn't mean it is any less violent.
Every heard of the word 'territorial'?
Just his bloody arm traumatized me as a kid O_o
That freaky scene would have left me scarred for life!
Simple, you can't kill Nick Fury.
As much as I liked nearly all of the actors in the movie, Samuel Jackson's performance as Arnold always blew me away. He just flat out nailed it. His facial expressions, the cigarette in his mouth and perhaps most importantly, the delivery he gave when yelling at the computer screen are perfect. Everyone seems to love the line about holding onto your butts, but I see far less comments about the line, "PLEASE! GODDAMIT I HATE THIS HACKER CRAP!". It's also not to say the other line isn't great or wonderfully ready, but it's this moment that truly defines Arnold. When I watch this movie, I don't see Samuel L Jackson, but I do see a tired, angry boss, who has a lot of pressure riding on his shoulders. He knows all too well the consequences of what's happening at that exact moment and the frustration just explodes wonderfully.
This is the one thing in both, the movie and the book, that I wish hadn't happened. Maybe it's because I've been a boss in his shoes with a lot riding on my ability to handle pressure, but I always hope in vain that what's going to happen to him does not happen.

I love the way that Mr. Arnold's arm is inexplicably placed into a nook in a wall, and when it falls perfectly on Laura Dern's shoulder as she is staring a raptor in the face, she is comforted for a moment rather than realizing that this arm is very clearly coming out of a wall and not attached to a human body.
Amazing work kee
You are the best! The raptors were my childhood fear back then the effects looked so real to me still better than cgi

Hey Klayton, I decided to re-watch the Lost World since you always speak so highly of it. I noticed when Malcolm's daughter is in the RV before they leave, the map on the wall lists the islands(las cinco muertes)as matanceros, muerta, sorna, tacano, and pena. Where is nublar? Or am I missing something?
Nublar isn't actually a part of the Five Deaths Island chain and is actually waaaay far away from all of them. Nublar is actually 80 miles away from las cinco muertes I believe
Klayton Fioriti cool, thanks...I thought I was going crazy.
2:32 is the music from Chills.
