In a deleted scene and the director's commentary it is told that Cooper actually was injured by an infant Spinosaurus, who was then shot by him right beside it's nest and drawing "Big Momma" towards the group.
This not only explains Coopers injury, but also why the Spinosaurus was dead set on a killing spree against the group, pursuing them the whole movie.
Sadly the scene, explaining so much of the story, was cut from the movie because the director's thought it (and a couple others) would make it "too long" - do keep in mind however that Jurassic Park 3 was the shortest of all movies in the franchise so far.

From the scene it looks like Cooper heads into the jungle further down the runway from the other two. So it's possible that the Spinosaurus (drawn to the sound of the megaphone) encountered Nash and Udesky first (first roar), Cooper saw this and started shooting from the flank (first set of shots), the Spinosaurus turned and charged Cooper, the other two used the opportunity to escape, then Cooper engaged with the Spinosaurus (second roar and set of shots) and was injured here.

good theory. Also, Cooper has a Barrett, while the other 2 have smaller caliber weapons (Udesky looks to be carrying an Steyr Aug, not sure what 5.56 is gonna do to a spino/rex besides piss it off), they probably can't hurt the Spino even if they want to. And Udesky is NOT a merc, he's a pilot/booking agent, making him panicking be a lot more understandable.

I always had 2 theories to this.
    1. Cooper told them to leave and to come back for him. Underestimating the spino, once he got a full hit in it provoked spino and it lashed out, injuring him. He realized how vicious the animal was and ran for it. Nash didn't stop because he wanted to secure the passengers and maybe his pay and was willing to leave cooper should things go south.
    2. Cooper seemed like he wasn't afraid to do any dirty work as he knocked out Grant without a second though. It almost seemed like he had some kind of personal agenda. He seemed like the proud hunter type so while he was scouting the area, the three spotted the Spino, and Cooper wanted to kill it. Seeing how there were three of them and only one dino, he saw it as an easy kill. Nash and Deski thought the plan was insane and left Cooper to do it alone. Rather than run, Cooper wanted bragging rights and engages the Spino, to his own regret. Nash didn't want to stop because again, his pay and passengers. Seeing cooper, nash thinks to himself, you did this to yourself and left him to die.

    • @cloud1612
      @cloud1612 Před 2 lety +10

I think Nash not stopping the plane had more to do with the fact that it would basically seal everyone's doom, and maybe going along with one of your theories that he had made his own decision to try and bring it down, so why risk everyone to save you now, ya know like hey it was your choice you're on your own

I think Cooper's wounds in the final cut are actually more likely to be environmentally-based. Say he slipped down a slope like in The Lost World and lost his gun. Also, given how big the gun was that he took into the jungle, it's likely that he abandoned it due to how heavy it looked. A BAD fall may also be the reason why he has a lot of those injuries in the first place. As for the mercenaries, I feel it's a JP standard trope to have bad guys who get a death that goes beyond karma and makes you feel sorry for their fate despite how terrible they are. Except the BioSyn guy in The Lost World novel, he deserved that one.

Realizing just how much danger he was in, he bolted and tried to get the plane to stop. Ironically, if he managed to put a good distance between the spino to stand still on the runway for 30 seconds or so, he could have run into the jungle on the other side and survived far longer than he did in the movie.

Despite me being late, again, I’ll throw my 2 cents into why I think cooper got left. Now when we hear the shots fired we hear 4 shots from smaller arms and 2 large caliber shots from what can only be coopers high explosive barret. From this I take that Udesky and Nash both shot a total of 2 shots at the spinosaurus but they quickly realized that their rifle did nothing to the spino. This prompted cooper to shoot the spino twice with his rifle while Nash and udesky shoot the thing 2 more times to back him up. I can only assume that Nash and Udesky both realized that their only hope was fleeing but cooper still stayed to attempt to take the spino down with his already large caliber explosive rounds since it was his best chance. It’s pretty obvious that his efforts were in vain as the spinosaurus already got to him before he could unload anymore rounds and cooper was forced to retreat with his injuries which is when he got to the runway defenseless and injured to meet his swift death.

There is no way in hell Cooper would be firing that thing one handed. That is a bullpup variant of the Barrett M82. It fires a .50 BMG round (or if you go by the incorrect description given by Cooper himself of it being a 20mm), it would have way to much kick for Cooper to handle. Especially if you take his injures into account. Now maybe if he was laying prone while firing it, then he could fire it no problem with one hand (though not very accurate without the other hand as support.) But who in their right mind would lay down to fire their weapon when you have a dinosaur as big as the Spinosaurus chasing you.

@@sarcasticcatfish1174 Yes, you can rechamber a weapon. But the Barrett M82, no matter what variant you are using, cannot be rechambered for a 20mm round. It can be chambered for the .416 Barrett, but that is no where near the size of a 20mm. Plus the .416 was released in 2005, 4 years after the movie. If you look at the size difference between a 20mm and .50 BMG, you can also see that the barrel is way to small in diameter to accept a 20mm round let alone use a magazine that small to feed the weapon. By all means if you can find factual evidence online and provide a link that proves me wrong, then I will emit to my mistake. Until then I stand by my comment.

    I’d say he got kicked.
It’s strong enough to have sent him flying a good distance, ample time to drop the gun, get up and run while it’s attention was obviously scattered with so many humans running around.
    Picture this:
As the group trekked into the far denser and humid atmosphere of the jungle, Nash slowly began to lose his nerve as Udesky kept muttering about sharp fanged monsters.
They hadn’t even gone far, so there should be little to no chance of running into anything at all- let alone big.
Cooper was no better as their chatter was certainly no help in listening for anything that may be close-
He gave pause as he heard a series of snaps and sharply told the others to shut up.
There was a brief silence, Amanda’s calls over the megaphone the only thing truly audible- the forest had otherwise gone still.
Just as he was about to tell them to turn back, he noticed a tree shift just to the right of him- right in front of Udesky and Nash.
A quick glance up sent his pulse through the roof as he looked up to see what the leg was connected to. Whatever it was, it had fangs- and it was looking up towards the sound of the woman. And Nash was just about to walk right into it.
Pulling his gun up he opened fire, his call to scatter drowned out by his shots in an attempt to startle the animal.
Everything was chaos. Udesky and Nash bolted in different directions back towards the plane as Cooper continued to fire, continued to try and get lucky and somehow scare it off-
The wind was knocked out of him when It suddenly turned straight in his direction, its stride as it rotated snapping in all directions as it caught brief glimpses of its fleeing prey came directly into his middle, snapping bone and punching grievous wounds into his body.
It all happened so fast. So quickly that Cooper scarcely even realized he was so badly injured. He struggled to his feet, groping for his gun.
Panic began to take hold as he realized he’d dropped it. Dropped it somewhere between him and the monster that was still there, still searching.
He began to scramble, tears fighting up as he realized he was alone- and had no weapon any more. He had to get back to the plane.
Praying he’d not been seen he ran, ran as fast as he could back towards the plane, the monsters bellowing fury ringing in his ears...

@@markjames8603 Yup. Many people like to say that "They would never abandon someone like that", but in reality, 80% of those people don't know what they're talking about at all (because fight or flight is a thing), and second, most of them lack the kind of training necessary to overcome the urge to run like the characters here are forced to do.
Also, when dealing with an animal of that size, shot placement and caliber are very important. A .50BMG round will probably tear through any part of the body, but while it may blow a sizeable hole in a smaller animal (say, a Carnotaurus), or blow it half (a Utahraptor), against something the size and weight of a Tyrannosaur... it's merely a pin-prick to them. Yes, the round has a solid chance of causing significant internal injury, but adrenaline is going to overcome most possible injuries, and it will only succumb to that injury hours or days later. With a large caliber weapon, like the Barret shown, you'd need a head-shot, and given that that's the most heavily 'armored' part of the body for most large predators (as A: it's got some of the thickest bone structure and B: part of the biting power comes from the strength of the bones), you'd have to aim for weak points, which isn't going to be easy when you're fighting the urge to run away, and that also requires a bit of knowledge of the animals in question of exactly where the critical weak points are... the only two people who would know that in this scene... are back at the plane.
Basically, the three went in under-armed (rifle caliber isn't going to do anything against a large predator), under-equipped (seriously, set some freaking land-mines), under-trained (with at least one having zero training of any kind), under-disciplined, and as we find out later in the film.... under-funded.
A proper crew for that role (Search and Rescue in a hostile environment), would be about 5 guys. At least two of which would be equipped with either a heavy caliber weapon (like a Barret), a grenade launcher of some kind, or probably some form of rocket launcher. The rest would be using some form of 7.62 weapon, likely a G3 or FAL for the reliability and punch needed, and all of them would have a radio and a headset. They would also have a series of mines to make up for the lack of numbers, and depending on when such an event was happening, a small solar-powered UAV to increase their search area drastically. The actual movement of this team would not happen until they have an exact fix on the person being rescued (or recovered), and they would all move as a team covering all angles....
I think I'm over thinking now..

I love breaking down off-screen action like this. If you don't mind, I'd like to pitch in and give you my perspective. First and foremost, I'll begin with weapon analysis.
Cooper - He's obviously the team's marksman, as he equips himself with the, "Iron Horn 20mm," rifle, as described by the closed captions in an establishing scene prior to arrival on Isla Sorna. This weapon is actually a Barrett M82A2, the bullpup version of the M82A1, that fires a .50 BMG (12.7x99mm) round that is intended for engaging lightly-armored personnel and equipment at long ranges. According to Nash, though he incorrectly states the weapon fires 20mm rounds, the rounds themselves are high-explosive incendiaries, which are even more gnarly than standard .50 BMG against soft targets. While effective, the M82A2, and other anti-materiel rifles, are impractical in most engagement situations due to size and weight. Jumping ahead to Jurassic World, we see that Owen Grady and Barry Sembène use considerably smaller weapons that are utilized by big game hunters; a Marlin Model 1895SBL in .45-70 Government (11.6x54mm) and a four-inch barrel Smith & Wesson Model 500 in .500 S&W Magnum (12.7x41mm) respectively. .45-70 Government, like .600 and .700 Nitro Express rounds, are popular among big-game hunters in both the United States and in the wilds of Africa and .500 S&W Magnum is considered the most powerful, commercially-available sporting handgun cartridge in the world and may be used for handgun hunting as well as competition.
Nash - Though also armed with a shotgun, he only ever uses a Heckler & Koch SL8-1, which is H&K's civilian version of the far superior G36. This weapon is a semi-automatic rifle that fires 5.56x45mm NATO rounds or .223 Remington (5.7x45mm) without the requirement of changing parts (Vice-versa does not apply), much like how .38 Special can be fired from a weapon that's chambered in .357 Magnum (Vice-versa does not apply). Unless modified, the SL8-1 cannot take standard twenty and thirty-round G36 magazines but instead uses single-stack ten-round magazines. Nash is a complete pleb, as you can see that he has not modified his rifle to take standard magazines and has only added an optic to his weapon. Jumping back to Jurassic World, we see that InGen security operatives utilize a a variety of weapons in different calibers like 9x19mm, .45 ACP (11.43x23mm), 12 Gauge, and 5.56x45mm NATO, though most of their lethal weaponry is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that InGen has designated 7.62x51mm NATO to be their best suited ammunition, or at least the bare minimum, for dealing with larger sized dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus/Indominus and that all smaller cartridges are considered efficient against small to medium sized dinosaurs like Velociraptor/Deinonychus. This factors in the larger availability of NATO and pistol/sub-gun cartridges and the fact that InGen security being armed solely with hunting/competition weaponry would be impractical for personnel and a logistical nightmare.
Udesky - Though it also uses 5.56x45mm NATO, the Steyr AUG is more capable than Nash's SL8-1 due to fully-automatic firing capability, an ergonomic design unhampered by compliance with government (Primarily American) mandates for the civilian market, an integrated 1.5x integrated sight with emergency iron sights atop the optic for backup, and a comfortable forty-two round magazine capacity. A real shame that this weapon, like the others, had been lost during the events of the plane crash, as Udesky can be seen angrily discarding this weapon after noticing the Spinosaurus attack bent the barrel and rendered it useless. During the events of Jurassic Park: 3, this weapon would've proved indispensable in many of the scenes involving the pursuing raptors due to its capabilities in medium-range and CQB (Close-Quarters Battle), to the point that Udesky may have even lived long enough to be rescued alongside Dr. Grant, Billy, and the Kirby family. Wouldn't have done much against the Spinosaurus by the logic established in The Lost World that large dinosaurs are impervious to 5.56x45mm NATO, but it certainly wasn't a bad choice of weapon for most everything else encountered. You can see Udesky in the background clumsily attempt to draw an H&K USP from a holster on his vest at some point during the Tyrannosaurus encounter, but he drops it in fear and it is presumably destroyed.
    Now, into the shit.
Kirby asks, "What was that," in response to the initial roar. Just after billy suggests a Tyrannosaurus, you can faintly hear two gunshots fire off in quick succession. Whilst Dr. Grant says, "I don't think so, sounds bigger," you can hear two more gunshots fire off slightly slower. Taking volume, pitch, and speed into account, this immediately suggests to me that either Nash or Udesky fired first, then Cooper. After the second roar, we hear two more gunshots that sound similar to the ones heard previously, confirming that Cooper did indeed fire second. Taking into account the rate of fire and both the size and power of an M82A2, he's either very strong to handle the recoil, desperate enough not to care about his shoulder, or in a position in which recoil is irrelevant. When he is seen running through the brush and onto the runway, he's obviously without his rifle. Looking at the wound in Cooper's abdomen, just missing the strap of his harness and above both his pistol's holster and the machete, it looks as though he would've been unable to reach those two weapons if he were in the Spinosaurus' teeth or hands, leaving anything that may have already been in his hands if he were put in such a position.
Going back to the last two gunshots fired, you can hear a more pained or annoyed roar immediately afterward. Taking into account that Cooper, the marksman with the M82A2, was the man on point in front of Nash and Udesky, fired two shots after Nash or Udesky, and then fired two more shots with the same weapon in between roars, I'd say he was very much in immediate danger and managed to save himself, only briefly, with his rifle. There's a number of ways this could've happened, here's the scenario in my head:
The Spinosaurus, despite its size, is a very stealthy dinosaur. Leading Nash and Udesky as they set up a perimeter, Cooper fails to notice the dinosaur and walks into close proximity with the other two not too far behind. The party only manages to notice the Spinosaurus as it bears down on them, probably staring dumb-struck until the initial roar. With Cooper standing in the way, Nash or Udesky can only fire two shots at the creature without tagging their marksman and he follows suit, probably missing both of his shots out of panic whilst turning to run with the others. A moment passes as Cooper is lagging behind, the weight of his rifle slowing him down and making it harder for him to navigate through the brush. The Spinosaurus only just manages to grab Cooper with its mouth, similar to how it grabs and pulls Nash out of the plane crash a few scenes later, hoping to drop Cooper on the ground and either gain a better biting angle or play with its food, again, much like it would later do to Nash. Cooper, still holding onto his rifle, quickly and desperately fires off two more shots that either scare or wound the Spinosaurus and he is free from its clutches. With maybe only one round left in the weapon, he decides to drop the rifle or it is somehow lost as he escapes the Spinosaurus after firing the last two shots. Hearing the plane engines in the distance, he quickly decides to intercept by emerging further down the runway in hopes that Nash and Udesky will stop to avoid running him over, more concerned about getting off the island at this point than the pursuing dinosaur. On the verge of tears from nearly dying, he almost breaks down into crying as he hopes the others will save him. Unfortunately, he notices too late that the Spinosaurus has caught up with him and barely manages a step to the side and a shriek of the word, "No," before its jaws clamp down on him.

I feel like it’s safe to say that all 3 men had a flight reaction instead of fight reaction. My assumption is that 2 ran one way and Cooper ran the other. Probably away from the plane which could be how he magically ended up so far down the run way. That’s still a continuity error for me though because he was entirely too far up there by the time they heard the first ROAR and Cooper running out the woods. But still, I say they all saw the Spino, 2 ran towards the plane while Cooper ran away from the plane. The Spino went after Cooper and maybe grabbed him slightly with his claws and that’s when Cooper started THEN shooting at it which made the Spino drop him and that’s how Cooper was able to run out of the woods. That’s my theory.

They definitely should’ve made the definitely less-than-a-mile walk back to where they landed, to collect them. Even if he dropped it cause it DID get damaged, they didn’t know that! He definitely could have just dropped it out of panic in order to flee, cause they would have slowed him way down, or cause he was wounded and couldn’t carry it. They had to assume there was a strong possibility it was still working!

I always thought the Spino picked Cooper up in its hand while Cooper was still holding the gun and the gun shots we hear are from Cooper blasting the Spino at close range when it was about to devour him. Cooper was dropped and the wounds we see are from the Spino’s claws while being lifted off the ground. It would also explain why his gun was missing since it was also dropped and Cooper decided to run instead of stalling to grab it.
