So how did the first episode of the live action compare to the start of the anime? Let us know!
It's more faithful to the manga I'd say, at least in the first episode (the anime doesn't include the scene where kid Luffy stabbed himself but it's in the manga like in the live action). Overall it's also very much condensed leaving out some supporting characters of the enemy crews so it's more focused on the main ones but it captures the feel and spirit very well especially with the character interactions
I would say the first episode was way better for pulling people in with the live action over the anime but this whole first season which is amazing in my eyes is what people would call some of the weakest parts of the show so if you end up loving it you’re going to super love the later seasons and or the anime
Also the snails are called transponder snails and they are natural creatures in the world that are domesticated because they can communicate telepathically to one another which is how they can be used as phones
Welcome to the World of One piece!!! The Greatest world building story after Harry Potter and Game of Thrones!!! This coming from someone who loves Bleach and Naruto Mangas more than one piece.

The show follows Japanese naming conventions which are arranged like family name, first name so Monkey D. Luffy's first name is Luffy and Roronoa Zoro's first name is Zoro.
Yes, Mackenyu, the guy who plays Zoro, is very skilled in using blades and general stunt work. I think he's done all of Zoro's stunts in the show.
The bird Luffy tries to recruit is called a news coo. They're essentially messenger birds that deliver newspapers and pirate bounties. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that the bird doesn't join the crew, unfortunately.

The actor who plays Zoro is the son of a famous martial artist named Sonny Chiba. So yes, he knows the martial arts lol. Can't wait for u guys to see more of this awesome show❤
American audience might be most familiar with Sonny Chiba as legendary swordsmith Hatori Hanzo in Kill Bill.

Don't try to base this in an age of history. It's not earth, it's a different planet with mostly ocean and no real habitable continents. So each island advances at their own pace, but bits and pieces of different ages trickle out from each. It's basically a world full of nearly isolated countries, all with their own level of progress.
One of the most fun things about fictional stories is trying to compare it to real-life; finding out where the similarities lie and where the differences lie. Few stories make this as fun as One Piece. Like you say, this story is not trying to be a period piece, just like how The Simpsons doesn't try to depict American suburban life in a way that's completely accurate. But that doesn't mean no comparisons should be drawn at all.

I honestly love when new viewers notice the on the nose very bizarre world building of one piece. There are even some Tolkien fantasy elements in the show mixed with some kind of alternate universe willy wonka esque sci fi lol, there's really nothing like it.
World building is one of my (Joan) absolute favorite aspects of a show. It doesn't need to make sense in the context of the real world, but if you can present your world earnestly and make me believe in it, you're a top tier show in my book

One Piece IMO is the greatest story ever told. I am overjoyed that the live action can expose more people to this wonderful universe! More of this pretty please!

This episode cover the first three episodes in the anime. The eight-episode season covers 46 episodes. If season 2 happens, it will be over 100 episodes covered in it! Quite the undertaking
Maybe we'll get lucky and they will give us 10 or 12 episodes in the second season, The Alabaster Saga.

OPLA cover 80+ chapters of manga and about 45+ episodes of anime, but there's some event that adapted earlier in this live action.
I'm assuming that's the whole first season, right? Oh man, how many seasons is OPLA gonna have??
@@studiobeaming yes, that's for whole season. For ep 1, i think just 3 to 5 episodes. I think for whole story of one piece maybe 12 to 15 season, anime itself have 20+ season.
Also if you skip fillers you can basically jump into the anime right after Arlong Park ends! Just prime yourself on the differences between OPLA and the first few arcs of one piece and you should be able to follow along pretty well
@@studiobeaming The first season covers 95 chapters of the manga. There are currently plans for six seasons (which should close the first half of the story) but 12 seasons were mentioned as possible.
I think Matt Owens said they are planing 8-12(probably 8) seasons to cover the first 500ish episodes
Note: this East Blue Saga, the season 1 of the live-action are covering around 45 episodes of the anime :3

I think in this show, bounties represent "power levels' in a way. So the higher it is, the more dangerous the pirate.
Roughly represent "power levels" some are just cuz they are legit pirates that murder civilians and marines

We're well aware! 🩷 Michael was just saying that we're choosing to watch the OPLA before the anime, so it's like when people watch the movie before the book; except funnily enough, the anime would be the "book" part of that metaphor, even though it in itself is already an on-screen adaptation

From what I’ve heard, this is now the second most expensive series on Netflix, only behind Stranger Things. Also, a great many of these sets are actually Practical, and not CGI.

25:28 This episode was essentially just the first two episodes of the anime, but with some characters from later on introduced early. The whole season covers the first 44 episodes of the anime, though, so it’s not as slow as the first episode for the rest of the season.

A good thing to keep in mind is One Piece is high fantasy, not a period piece. The blending of different era styles is very intentional because this isn't earth, not even a different version of earth, this is a 'like earth' planet.
The creator of one piece had a heavy involvement in the making of the Netflix show, as for the episodes each Netflix episode covers approx 5-6 episodes if broken down, there was about 46 episodes from the anime and around 95 chapters of the manga, along with changes that Eiichiro Oda gave permission to do like bringing some characters forward to progress the show faster than if they done a 1 to 1 with the anime.
I started watching One Piece because of the hype, but stayed and watched til the end because of Zoro, both the character and the actor. Haha.. Mackenyu Arata is the actor. He has done some other anime live adaptations, so he's used to sword fights/action scenes. He is also the son of the late Sonny Chiba, was a famous actor and martial artist in Japan.

10:06 That's the world of One Piece. It's not really based on a fixed era in the real world, but some sort of amalgamation of different era.
You might see something that is more belonging to the modern age or the golden piracy age now, in the later chapter you will even see something belonging in the future.
The explanation on why that's the case will be revealed more along the line in the manga. And yes, this is some sort of a plea for you to read the manga or continue the anime after this. 😈

I was also super daunted by the massive amount of episodes to the anime so I never tried it until last year I realized that it’s no different than me starting a random show on Netflix and it constantly gets renewed seasons, except with One Piece I wouldn’t have to wait lol. Over half way through now, best decision I made

I've read the one piece manga since I was in secondary school. That was like more than 20 years ago. 2 months of hospital wouldn't be enough lmao.

This episode was three or four episodes in the anime. The length remained somewhat the same, but the story was changed a bit.
The birds with the hat are actually the mailmens in one piece. They give you newspaper if you pay them.

I actually red the manga so I don't really know about the number of episodes. But the whole season cover the first arc called East Blue, it's about 11-12 mangas. So without the fillers it must be about 45-50 episodes.

Each anime episode is roughly 20 minutes long (including opening credits, end credits and recap). If you do 3-4 episodes a night, you should be most of the way through in roughly a year.....

They're doing a remake of the anime - a different studio so different anime style. The pacing is going to be different as well.
I think it covers around 30-40 episodes in total so maybe ~4 episodes on averages per live action episode

Yeah, they haven't found the One Piece yet. But, they have learned that there are important clues... and now have the majority of those, and what's showing is clearly hinting that the series is to the start of its final saga, the climax. The series is split into sagas, and each saga is split into multiple interconnected story arcs.
